If you are having issues with seams (where the two foam pieces come together and are way too obvious for your perfectionist personality) then you can rub the tip of your glue gun (the metal part) along the seam to make it appear well...seamless. He doesn't mention that in this video but he has in past videos. It's a great little trick to make your props look more professional.
I just got through repairing my arm after its first mostly successful outing. Couple of tips. If your foam isn't terribly dense, it may be worth using some copper washers on the hinges to prevent them pulling through. Copper washers seem to be the easiest to get in the right size. Also the elbow piston isn't necessarily perpendicular to the shaft, so consider whether you'd be better gluing at an off-90 degrees angle. (As mine broke off, perhaps for this reason, and gluing the pistons strongly is difficult, I ended up 3D-printing a coupler just to be sure.)

Hi Chris, bought your bundle a few weeks ago and I'm very, very pleased with it. I finished the steampunk shouder armour and the steampunk arm. Painting is for me the most tricky part as I'm colourblind. A big shout out for your instruction video's, very helpfull together with the patterns. Working my way through this project right now, your patterns, written instructions, and video instructions are great. I bought the everything bundle and am super happy with it. I like the practicality of your videos and how well they instruct. Great work.
I find it so fascinating that you don't use contact glue but hot glue. And everything looks so awesome. When I used hot glue, my pieces didn't want to stay in their place and I often burned myself...so HOOOOW
I used to use Contact Cement- if you have a look at my early videos, that's what I was using, however, then I moved back to Canada from Australia. The glue that was so easy to find and cheap in Australia, wasn't to be found in Canada, and other contact cements I tried that were available locally did not work well at all. The other thing is that when I lived in Oz, I could work outside, whereas in Canada, I had to be inside most of the year, which meant exposing myself to concentrated fumes. The other thing that happened at that time is that my 6 year old son was diagnosed with cancer, which made the warnings on the back of those contact cement tubes that much more meaningful to me. So, yeah, I figured I would see if I could get hot glue to work, and to my complete surprise, it actually did a really good job once I learned to tame it:) I'd say the biggest key is to have an adjustable temp glue gun. It does three things. 1- you can adjust the temp low enough so that you don't have to hold the pieces together for very long before the glue cools, 2- you get way less burnt fingers, 3- less fumes from the glue sticks, 4- it doesn't melt the foam. The glue gun I have is just a cheap one from Amazon, I think I paid about $20 and it has served me very well. Hope that helps!
Thank you for another incredible creation! I have been using old speaker wire I have been holding onto from an old home theater unit that blew up on me years ago. I put them all over the cat masks and some hats. They look sweet on steampunk goodies. I love them!

In all my life I did only once tutorial (Assassin's hidden blade) and I was so proud of myself. But this. This is amazing. This is hilarious. This is irresistible. Now my blade seems like it's a kid's toy and this arm is masterpiece.
I have watched a few of your videos and think your techniques are easy to follow. I hope to follow your techniques from a few of your projects to construct a Mr Freeze costume. Any suggestions on which ones you would use.
You work gets more and more advanced. I built a top hat similar to the design suggestions you made back in the day. I used yoga mat, crafting foam for patches and googley eyes (bought a pack at art store) for rivets. But it was kinda easy. Most challenging part was a fit and curves of the hat. Then I sanded 2 nerf guns - rifle and pistol and made them similar looking - rivets, copper, silver, weathered look. But this arm's complexity skyrocketed. I don't know what kind of diet you follow now since you moved to few years ago but it clearly works and make your stuff extraordinary :D
Thanks for the kind words! When I made that first top hat pattern, I would never have believed how versatile EVA foam really is. I also told people hot glue wouldn't work....Guess I have learned a little bit since then. Of course there is always more to learn....
I am also the Happy owner of super everything bundle and love it and your videos. I and my adult kids are preparing steampunk costumes for GenCon and this is helping alot. A couple of things I found in this build so far that I did a little differently is I used the top to one of those toy capsules the kids get a ring or whatever out of instead of a roll on ball. I placed a neopixel under it and added a gauge with a neopixel and hid a microcontroller in the acid core thingy. I will post a vid or pic a soon as I get it completed. :)

Contact cement can be stronger if you get the right brand, where I live, there is no decent contact cement available locally, so I use hot glue, and it works great for me. It's also way less toxic than contact cement. But, yes you can definitely use contact cement.
I don't know where you get all this foam, I don't have any store in France to get that big pieces of Foam, but I think I have enough with the children store to make an arm for one of my BJD. That's a really really great tutorial, may be your masterpiece right now !

I'm enjoying making my steampunk hydraulic arm for the most part, but I'm finding parts of it VERY difficult as I'm petite. That means that my bicep is medium, my forearm is small, and everything is MUCH shorter. I've had to cut out a lot of the design out to be able to fit the more important stuff. Had a few moments of complete and utter frustration while redesigning some things and making a lot of mistakes while I figure out what works and what doesn't. It'll come together...I hope...
Hmmm, yeah, that is the tricky thing about arms, they can have such a broad combination of length/ width. Maybe I should revisit that design and add another size. I hope you are able to get something to work for you!! If you do have any questions, feel free to contact me!

@@LostWax I am making this killer Halloween costume, I was thinking sort of like boot tops up and over the knee, with tubes, wires and pressure gauges. Not just in front but around the leg, but like velcro in the back so I could get my big feet into them, any way I can show you a picture?
It is really quite durable, as long as you make it from reasonably dense foam- the foam I used worked fine, but one of those camping mats would probably not be dense enough. The main issue that I came across was if I didn't flare the tubing that I used for the pivoting rivet on the elbow joint enough, then it popped out. Once I flared it a bit more, it was fine.
I'm using an adjustable temp gun. I buy multitemp glue sticks and then turn my gun as low as I can go and still have the glue flow. This keeps me from getting burnt fingers and lets me work faster because I don't have to hold things as long waiting for the glue to cool.
Hi! Loved this project and would dearly love to incorporate it into my current steampunk repertoire, however I am a plus size and I have large arms. Is the pattern for this able to be easily sized up?
I do have 3 different sizes included in the pattern, the largest being for a 41cm bicep. As far as resizing goes, it is possible, not as easy as some of my patterns due to the fact that arms tend to not scale equally length to width. The best way to resize for extra width is to make a vertical cut down the centre back of the arm pieces and add in a n extra strip of foam. It's probably easiest to do this once you have built the main arm structure from foam. It adds two extra seams down the back, but since the arm is made to look like it is pieced together, it still looks right. If you want to avoid the extra seams, you can try to add the extra to the paper pattern. Hope that helps, if you want to give it a try, and run into problems, you can always email me and I'll do my best to help you out.-Cheers, Chris
It's actually quite durable. You can get different densities, the denser it is the stronger it is. This arm is really amazingly durable, the only small problem I had was, if I was being really active (pretending to be a ninja, for example) sometimes the elbow rivet came out. Which was just because I didn't flare the end of the rivet quite enough.
I've bought quite a few of your patterns now and I LOOOOVE them....I was wondering if you had any plans to make something a little more "Lady" Steampunk oriented? I have plans for a steampunk themed birthday (and my husband costume is going to be awesome thanks to your patterns) but I'm struggling to find female oriented patterns....would love to have something from you that would go with my steampunk tapered top hat.
Hey, thanks for pointing that out, I hadn't really though too much about the fact that I don't really have much specifically themed for a female. Most stuff I have made for my wife is pretty much all sewing, and drafted specifically for her, making it harder to make some sort of generic how to or pattern. I did make a pretty nice skirt out of curtains and a bridesmaids dress... Do you have any ideas you are thinking of, or a specific style?

Mmmm, yes, Vambrace, and shoulder armour would be great. I am not sure if those are any more feminine necessarily..... You know, if you want to make a vambrace, it should be pretty easy to figure out yourself, it is just basically a truncated cone. If you google truncated cone calculator, there is a website that will give you a printable file. Then all ya gotta do is add accoutrements:) I have a couple of projects in the queue before I do anything like that though, So, I am guessing you'll have had your party by then.....

I'm enjoying making my steampunk hydraulic arm for the most part, but I'm finding parts of it VERY difficult as I'm petite. That means that my bicep is medium, my forearm is small, and everything is MUCH shorter. I've had to cut out a lot of the design out to be able to fit the more important stuff. Had a few moments of complete and utter frustration while redesigning some things and making a lot of mistakes while I figure out what works and what doesn't. It'll come together...I hope...
Hmmm, yeah, that is the tricky thing about arms, they can have such a broad combination of length/ width. Maybe I should revisit that design and add another size. I hope you are able to get something to work for you!! If you do have any questions, feel free to contact me!
You have great patterns here, I'm considering purchasing them, but I would like some steampunk shin guards that are like your arm, with bells and whistles, do you make those?
Hi there, I currently do not have any steampunk shin guard patterns. Were you thinking of something that would go all the way around the leg or just strap to the front?
@@LostWax I am making this killer Halloween costume, I was thinking sort of like boot tops up and over the knee, with tubes, wires and pressure gauges. Not just in front but around the leg, but like velcro in the back so I could get my big feet into them, any way I can show you a picture?

How durable is this?

It is really quite durable, as long as you make it from reasonably dense foam- the foam I used worked fine, but one of those camping mats would probably not be dense enough. The main issue that I came across was if I didn't flare the tubing that I used for the pivoting rivet on the elbow joint enough, then it popped out. Once I flared it a bit more, it was fine.
I guess I'll have to buy the Super Everything bundle then.

Are you using a high temp glue gun and glue, or low temp?
I'm using an adjustable temp gun. I buy multitemp glue sticks and then turn my gun as low as I can go and still have the glue flow. This keeps me from getting burnt fingers and lets me work faster because I don't have to hold things as long waiting for the glue to cool.

Could you make a steampunk rifle?
Hi! Loved this project and would dearly love to incorporate it into my current steampunk repertoire, however I am a plus size and I have large arms. Is the pattern for this able to be easily sized up?
I do have 3 different sizes included in the pattern, the largest being for a 41cm bicep. As far as resizing goes, it is possible, not as easy as some of my patterns due to the fact that arms tend to not scale equally length to width. The best way to resize for extra width is to make a vertical cut down the centre back of the arm pieces and add in a n extra strip of foam. It's probably easiest to do this once you have built the main arm structure from foam. It adds two extra seams down the back, but since the arm is made to look like it is pieced together, it still looks right. If you want to avoid the extra seams, you can try to add the extra to the paper pattern. Hope that helps, if you want to give it a try, and run into problems, you can always email me and I'll do my best to help you out.-Cheers, Chris

So how durable is Eva foam? Like is this gonna rip or break SUPER easily?
It's actually quite durable. You can get different densities, the denser it is the stronger it is. This arm is really amazingly durable, the only small problem I had was, if I was being really active (pretending to be a ninja, for example) sometimes the elbow rivet came out. Which was just because I didn't flare the end of the rivet quite enough.

I've bought quite a few of your patterns now and I LOOOOVE them....I was wondering if you had any plans to make something a little more "Lady" Steampunk oriented? I have plans for a steampunk themed birthday (and my husband costume is going to be awesome thanks to your patterns) but I'm struggling to find female oriented patterns....would love to have something from you that would go with my steampunk tapered top hat.
Hey, thanks for pointing that out, I hadn't really though too much about the fact that I don't really have much specifically themed for a female. Most stuff I have made for my wife is pretty much all sewing, and drafted specifically for her, making it harder to make some sort of generic how to or pattern. I did make a pretty nice skirt out of curtains and a bridesmaids dress... Do you have any ideas you are thinking of, or a specific style?

You're patterns are amazing, I've made 3 types of top hats and the Plague Dr's mask, next is the Airship, then the divers helmet, then gas mask :)...my husband will be getting this mechanical arm, so having something made from one of your patterns that I can wear to match up with the hubby would be awesome.....thanks again for responding....you made my day :)
Mmmm, yes, Vambrace, and shoulder armour would be great. I am not sure if those are any more feminine necessarily..... You know, if you want to make a vambrace, it should be pretty easy to figure out yourself, it is just basically a truncated cone. If you google truncated cone calculator, there is a website that will give you a printable file. Then all ya gotta do is add accoutrements:) I have a couple of projects in the queue before I do anything like that though, So, I am guessing you'll have had your party by then.....

There should be a picture of the foam mat I use. It's made as an anti-fatigue mat, and I get it in a big 4x8 foot roll.
