    “Du hast” means “you have” - as in “du hast mich gefragt” (“you have asked me”). It could mean “you hate” if its “du hasst” - thats the double meaning behind it.

    • @michaelb1761
      @michaelb1761 4 ปีที่แล้ว +65

      That's what makes the lyrics so good. It could mean you have me - early in the song - but when he says no to the marriage vows, you hate me is what makes sense.

    • @a64738
      @a64738 4 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      That was what I guessed it meaning from the similarities with Norwegian my native tongue.

    • @brn-bg3244
      @brn-bg3244 4 ปีที่แล้ว +39

      There is a difference between "du hast" and "du hasst". As you can see there is additional "s" in the second variant. The first means "you have" and the second "you hate" ... as it is explained above. You can mix the meaning if you only hear the beginning of the video, but as soon as you hear the whole sentence there is no doubt what they sing - "you have asked me". The official video also writes "du hast" with one "s", which can't be misuderstood for "du hasst" (you hate). Sorry for the repeating of the previous comments.

      @@brn-bg3244 Are you trying to say their is no ambiguity? You can hear the difference between hast and hasst? I understand the two words are spelled differently and have a different meaning. I also understand the context of the song and the intentional ambiguity of using two words that sound EXACTLY the same but have very different meanings. "You have me" makes no since after he says no to the marriage vows (or version of marriage vows). He is saying the same thing audibly but meaning the opposite. It changes from 'hast" to "hasst".

    In case you didn't know and nobody told you yet: The vocalist, Till Lindemann, is a licensed pyrotechnician. Being a german it means a several years long apprenticeship in the country with pretty much the strictest laws and regulations regarding pyrotech and even fireworks. That's why all their shows are like that, he just really loves to set things on fire and blow them up. And because of that Rammstein is one of the few bands in the world that get permission for their pyrotech at every single show.

      @pieterpossenier4191 4 ปีที่แล้ว +28

      @@johannschu3962 i got my pyrotechnics licence in Germany and it does take 5 days to get it, but you have to work in the field, have worked on 20(i think) effects and have your boss at the firm you work for vow for you, in order to be allowed to take the course. Everyone in the class already has a lot of experience.
      You also need a paper from the police that allows you to take the course.
      i'm from Belgian, so i had to get this from the Belgian police and then translated to german.
      You also need a document from the gouvernement for good behavior.
      after the course there is a state exam (that is hard, specialy when your german isn't super good)
      This all is for the "bühnepyrotechnieker" course that is the basis course for pyro on stage.
      you can then also take a course for fireworks and 2 for TV/film effects. all these also take a week each, but you only have the exam for the main course i think.
      In Belgium the German license is recognized but it's not recognized everywhere, so for rammstein to preform they always also need local pyrotechnicians to "help"

    *Edit*
    When Lindemann is singing this song he plays with the words "hast" and "hasst"
    "Hast" means have but "hasst" means hate
    And yes the song is about a proposal
    Officaly the lyrics is
    Du
    Du hast
    Du hast mich
    Du hast mich gefragt und ich hab nichts gesagt
    In english its:
    You have
    You have me
    You have asked me and I said nothing
    So now the point is because he said nothing to the proposal he plays with hate and have.
    It would be like:
    You
    You hate
    You hate me
    Because i said nothing
    So thats the double meaning! 😅
    I hope you understand my explanation!

    • @Random-Saurus

      You will get surprised if I tell you in Mexican Spanish the word play hast/hasst is preserved by the equal pronunciation of "tú has (you have)" and "tú haz (you do)". Since the context makes the distinction between has/haz, until you complete the sentence "du hast mich gefragt (you have me asked/tú hasme preguntado [not an usual order of the sentence, it's more archaic])" you can get the actual meaning of the phrase even in the Mexican Spanish translation.

      This is what is called a homophone. It is pronounced exactly the same, it has two different meanings depending on its spelling. The actual meaning is only obvious in writing. In the spoken language this is only obvious in context. If it is done like Rammstein does it, then the homophone results in two possible meanings, obviously intentionally. Obviously, this does not translate well into English as the placement of subject, verbs, and objects is a bit different. As such this doesn't work in English.

    • @potentatewags

    I was stationed in Germany for 25 years (1990-2005 and 2006-2016), and I remember when Rammstein first came out. The great worry was that they were a right-winged band because of some of things they did (such as rolling their R's). Thankfully, that turned out not to be the case, and I enjoy hearing their music, as it's played, when I'm listening to Rockland Radio out of Mainz (or out of Trier), Germany (via Rockland's app on Simple Radio).

      @@alexandrewolkmer7495 yeah... also it is basically rock music. And as we know quite alot of rock musician say they play rock'n'roll... so with this logic Rammstein are playing rock'n'roll
      No, dear sir, you are wrong. There is a point of naming different styles with their own names. And the point is that they are not the same.
      As we talk about industrial metal, I will give one more example. I know alot of metalheads and they call Rammstein and similar bands industrial, simply industrial. And it is wrong to call them that way. Listen to Throbbing Gristle or Cabaret Voltaire, that is industrial music. You will find out, it is different to the band from this video. Correct way would be post-industrial, still very broad terminology, and to be more clear industrial metal would be used.
      And Industrial metal is a mix of electro-industrial and different kinds of metal music.
      Don't make me start explaining difference between heavy, thrash and any other style.
      So you see, it is not rock, it is not industrial. It is not even a mix of those two. Coz that would be industrial rock.
      That is why I posted the comment saying that it is one genre and not another.
      PS. Maybe people would think I am a nerd. Maybe I am. I listen too a lot of music and I know exactly what I am listening to.
      The reason I asking people to distinguish the genres, because here in the internet you will not take the words to your heart. And you will avoid confusion and embarrassment from your unknowing of the matter if you would make a mistake offline.

    Greetings from Germany,
    "du hast" translates to "you have", but a little twist in this song is that it sounds the same as "du hasst" which means "you hate". I don't know if that was intended, but the band stated that most of their songs are dealing with love in more than one aspect.
    The song builds up from "you" to "you have asked me" to "you have asked me and I have said nothing". Then the refrain kicks in with wedding vows that are answered with a no. At least to my understanding.
    It's a bit weird because based on the wording itself it is a wedding vow that is held by an official in a registry office. In the weddings, that I was a guest in, the official asks in a way that the answer is either yes or now, the bride and groom don't recite the text themselves.
    "Willst du bis der Tod uns scheidet Treue sein für alle Tage" means "do you want to be faithful (to me) till death do us part"
    &
    "Willst du bis zum Tod, der scheidet Sie lieben auch in schlechten Tagen" means "Do you want, till death who separates, love her even in bad days"
    So the first part seems to be asked by the partner and the second part seems to be asked by an official/ external person based on the wording itself.
    Also "scheiden" can be translated to separate and to divorce.
    To my understanding, the text deals with saying no at a wedding as long as "you have asked me and I have said nothing" is addressed towards an official. If "you have asked me..." addresses the partner, I would guess that it deals with saying no to a marriage proposal.
