The R1 is an R3 Mark II. The R5 to me is a better pick in terms of overall features.
We finally have a Canon mirrorless lineup that provides us with a lot of options, very different from 2020. Can you imagine what the R3 II will deliver? I wonder if it makes sense.
@@OrdinaryFilmmaker The R3 Mark II could introduce the dual pixel auto focus and a higher megapixel, since the R1 is already geared towards the sports/ action market.

We had oversampled 4K60p years ago in the R5C but it is NOT in the new R5 Mark II? Nikon also offered full sensor readout oversampled 4K at 60fps years ago but Canon is still stuck at 30fps. What a shame....

@@jonasgillmannCanon has a Cinema lineup so they have to segment. This is why my setup is Canon 1dxmkIII for stills and Lumix s5iiX for stills/video. Panasonic no longer has a pro Varicam line so no need to segment and you get it all with the s5iiX.
I completely understand why many find pixels an issue.. I believe that for this particular camera 32mp should be the middle ground for those who are okay with 24 and for those who rather 45mp..
Canon should have understood that too. That that they didn't is undeniable proof they don't listen to their customers or the market. Cameras are electronic now, and electronics has to do one thing above all else and that is innovate. The idea that 24 mp is enough needs to be dismissed.
If not, it will be the reason the company will lose even more market share. I now know hat I've suspected all along. The company is run by the decisions of old fogies that need to move one before they run the company into the ground.
I have been thinking about all of the information from your presentation and from a host of other videos that have been posted today. I am impressed by some of the new features that Canon has brought to market in the R1 and R5 Mark II. I have been saving up for my next Canon body for roughly two years now. Frankly, from what I see I am thinking about buying two R5 cameras or an R5 and an R3. The second choice will give me the faster shutter readout speed that I really want at a frame rate that is already fast enough for my work with most of the functionality of the new R1 for my silent shutter speed requirements. The existing R5 sensor is already one of the best that Canon has ever produced. From my perspective the R5 Mark II cost is $4299 plus another $499 for the battery grip and another $250 for three more batteries which is over $5000 dollars which is about what 2 R5 bodies cost. Similarly, the R3 is about $4000 now as opposed to the R1 at its release price at the same resolution and more than an extra $2000. I guess that I’m wondering if I’d be better off with one of those new RF f2 or f2.8 zooms and the older bodies than a single body. $8k is a lot to spend and I am finding myself pausing instead of getting excited by what I am seeing now.

Also the canon r3 already has the face registering mode/register people priority mode that works in photo and movie mode.
You can register up to 10 people in the mode.
True, and there are many features of the R3 that I appreciate, features that the R5 II didn't have. With the R1 update, it makes me wonder what the R3 II will deliver, or even if it makes sense. At $3,999 the R3 makes a lot more sense than it did at $5,999

Sorry, they're way out of my price point. But what interests me is to see what will trickle down the line. Maybe the next R6iii or R7ii (which is more within my budget) will get that Xcelorator chip, stacked BSI sensor, CLog2...I can't wait to see.

I don't believe this to be a Flag Ship Camera for Canon. The R1 is a brilliant camera no doubt, but it has launched way behind other Flagships and isn't even as good - some of the other Flagships will update soon and will eat into the R1 sales surely.
I agree. I don't think the term flagship applies here. It's a sports and fast action photography.

Sorry, Canon still doesn't offer us wildlife cameras. The R1 only has 24 megapixels, and the R5 MK II has a bending sensor, no GPS, and no cross-type AF. It's so hard to make an R1S with 45MP?
You should look at -80 and -90 wildlife photos. How did they get the masterpieces then? Nowadays you "burst" 1000 pictures in an hour and hope that you got a 1 decent shot.
@@jay10242 I am old fashion and I don't need 40 fps and 1000 pictures. The R1 commercial shows photos of a bird taking off from a perch at 40 fps, but the bird lacks details.
The 24 MP sensor is the best at low light I will not move from my Canon R62 and 90D stacked sensors or not.
At $4,300 USD, the R5II is a conundrum. As one who does not shoot much video, If I didn't already have a R5, I will not hesitate to grab one for less than $3k USD.
For many, the MK1 is a good buy at 2899. I see a lot of photographers still using the 5D4. Sure the AF is better and the read out speed is better, but is the R5 MK1 not more than sufficient?

I haven't found this information yet. Did you find the spec sheet somewhere? The new cinema name video modes make it hard for me to map current video specs to the new specs.
@@OrdinaryFilmmaker “4K profiles at up to 30 fps use the full sensor width in “fine” mode, or you can capture higher frame rates with pixel binning. Full HD can be recorded at 240 fps with pixel binning as well. Most 4K modes can also be captured cropped to an APS-C frame size.” From a Yahoo Finance site.
@@PlacesToVisit That's very underwhelming. I'm really disappointed in Canon to artificially cripple the R5 II in such a way. Their competition and even their own R5C was capable of 8K oversampled 4K60p.
Hopefully, a firmware update will fix that!
Looks like I won’t be upgrading from the R5C. However, there’s one thing that did catch my attention and it’s the new in camera batteries. LP E6P batteries support 8k60fps. I’m wondering if it will support it in the R5C without needing an external battery?? Hoping they continue the video focused R5C line.

Is there any improvement in dynamic range? I am a landscape photographer and if dynamic range is the same then other new features are not good enough for me to upgrade.
Feels like they crippled the R5II video. Doesn't even match the 4K60 oversampled of the R6II????
I'm having trouble getting validated specs on oversampled video. Canon documentation is not complete and contradicts itself at times. I have documentation showing that 8K oversampled 4K up to 60 should be there...
@@OrdinaryFilmmaker yeah but they removed it at the last minute I hear. I almost exclusively shoot R6II at 4k60, and was looking for something to help make my videos better. So 8k60 might be usable and "better", but a big hassle with raw only and the rolling shutter is BARELY better than the R6II. Maybe I can use the mushy 4k120 and be happy, especially since I assume rolling shuttet is greatly reduced with the line skipping...
It has all these excellent features, but does it have one of the most simple features that has been found on even cheap cameras from other brands for over a decade? That is, can you keep the horizon level on during recording video? It may seem silly, but this one feature will decide whether I purchase one or not. I know it has some self-leveling IBIS thing, but that isn't what I'm asking. I just want to be able to make the camera level myself, because I can see the level on the screen. Any clue if it can do that?
Anybody knows if the R5 Mark II have anti-flickering in video mode like the R6 Mark II?
Cameras are electronic now, and electronics has to do one thing above all else and that is to innovate. The idea that 24 mp is enough needs to be dismissed. Nowadays with all the stiff competition, not just from other SLRs, but from cell phones too. Enough is not enough.

I’m sorry, but the R5 mark 2 is just not that impressive to me at all …one thing that’s total craziness is the fact that the Mark two doesn’t have two CF express slots … like come on canon the Sony, A7S 3 which was released 1 million years ago has 2 CF express slots… I’m sticking with my decision and going with the C400 and just keeping my R5 Mk 1 and C70
The Sony has type A cards with much slower speeds. When Sony supports gen 4 Type A or goes dual Type B I'll be impressed. For you, the C400 is a much better option. The R50 does both stills and video - a compromise.

Sony only uses Type A on their cameras. If gen 4 cards are released and sony supports them, that would give sony customers type B gen 3 speeds.
Bit underwhelmed, guess i let the hype get to me. Gonna wait for actual reviews. Well the one thing that now will def go on my shopping list is a matte box with VNDs. I was waiting to see if the NDs in the patents made it to R5II. Also no mention of oversampled 4k was a bit of a letdown.
You guys did a good job though. Interesting to see 2 aussies on there. Being neurospicy and with imposter syndrome (even though its been my job for over 15 years) I've never gone out of my way to learn about aussie shooters.

the R5-II to be disappointing. The flash synchronization of the electronic shutter is only 1/160 and does not reach 1/250. This means that its CMOS capture speed is still not fast enough to reduce rolling shutter distortion. 1/160 is like a The compromise is between speed and noise. Have they encountered a bottleneck in semiconductor technology? The Z8 and Z9 have reached 1/250, and even the A9-III has a global shutter. The R1 can reach 1/400. I hope the R5-II can catch up!

Given that neither of these entries from Canon are perfect cameras; the perfect camera hasn't yet been invented, a few thoughts spring to mind. The updated R5 II seems to be the far more successful of the two. I am disappointed that a dual gain sensor wasn't integrated into the R1. Someone should tell Canon that the proper phrase is "A jack of all trades and a master of none." and I think that sums up the R1. Regardless, Canon now has excellent choices of top tier options. And to the extent there has been significant bleeding away from Canon, these two offering should satisfy 99% of those loyal to the brand. Perhaps, one can fault Canon about the time frame it took to get these models out the door and sadly, there doesn't appear to be any final versions available for the Olympics nevertheless, Canon should be happy about the launch. How do you feel about thins, Simon? I bet you can't wait to get your hands on the R5 II.
Just get a R62 and a 90D and call it a day😅
No the r3 does 240fps in 1080
So the R5 II doing 240 fps 2K is better then... is slightly better then or does the R3 do 240 in 2K as well?
@@OrdinaryFilmmaker yes the r5ii is slightly better as the r3 does 1080/fhd at 240fps and the r5ii can do the same but with 2k resolution.
Simon was right again. The R5II seems to be the master of all not the R1.
Thanks Ray. The R1 is a follow up to the 1DX III - the same customer space... It's not a Z9 like camera.
What I thought was funny was the all the rumours that were being bandied about by Canon Rumours and YT channels turned out to be almost completely wrong. I think the only thing they got right were the names.
I got the date right, the sensor right, and the video the night before with specs and price, those were right too ;)

I love how folks are underwhelmed by Cameras they were NEVER going to buy in the first place. I love it even more that they are usually the very same folks that can barely use the features of most Cameras from many years ago. Worst of all, these are also mostly the GEAR don't matter Crowd but now all of a sudden, it's the only thing that matters.
This could be a possible argument except for the fact that competitors are providing better cameras for less money.

@@NikCan66 The more appropriate head-to-head would be R5ii v. Nikon Z9 v. Sony a1. The R1 doesn't even pretend to try to compete with the flagship cameras. The R5ii specs come a lot closer -- and it's clearly better than the a1. (But an a1ii is surely on the horizon.)

I agree the Canon R5 mark ii is more a flagship camera than the Canon R1 would be a more likely comparison but as Canon has earmarked the Canon as the R1 as may cause people to switch to mirrorless rivals like to Nikon or Sony
No cinema OS on the R1 .... so underwhelming. Thought this camera was supposed to be the" master of all" or some big statement they made a year or so ago. I'll role with my R3 and R5C for now--- maybe get the c400 eventually down the road. yeah, still disappointed with Canon, and I'll ask again "Please add 1.5x anamorphic support to all the Cinema OS bodies"
No, though the camera does provide cinema terminology in the menus. This might be the reason behind some of the confusion.

DISSAPOINTING! Total Flop on the "flagship". 24mp on a flagship and no articulating screen, that screen is AWFUL. The R5 II with an SD card slot and no IR focus button, and same terrible flip screen? Nikon is going to love all its new customers buying the Z9. What a let down....
