    I really appreciate all of the videos you make. Phthalo green has changed my life to be honest. It mixes with Dioxazine purple to make a nice blue. I don't even put blues or yellows on my palette. Quinacridone magenta is a fantastic pigment, by the way.

      Looking back on all the Quick Tips I've done regarding color, if you take them one by one and practice the heck out of each, you will be able to mix color with total confidence.

    so interesting, this is one educated, interesting lady. I both use out of the tube and mix my own, depending on what I am working on.

    Really interesting, I think you just convinced me to give Viridian another chance. Usually I mix my own, you get more control and you learn more about the possibilities of colour combinations, but I also use some tube greens to save time like cad green which I always modify. Thanks for great insight !

    both of course (8:08 caption question) ...unless you mean grinding my own paint no then tubes of course but if you mean straight from the tube is less often for me mixed paint is used to produce the majority of the color range in my paintings. Thanks, i enjoy your videos.

      Craig, I use variations of Viridian in a number of those lessons. Stroll through those that deal with color and read the descriptions.

    I dont have any viridians I was thinking , so I thought I'd take your tip and go with it. I went to the art shop , grabbed the trans redox and the green but when I got home I discovered the green was actually phthalo turquoise , dammit. Somebody put it back in the wrong place. Anyway, they are both transparent so I thought , might as well try em out. Whoa surprise , surprise...I was able to mix an olive drab , olive , a very dark green-black like perylene , sepia ,burnt umber , a dk b/sienna , raw sienna , a celadon green( add white ) and...a green that looked like viridian- phthalo green...which means the RT transp redox must be a pretty good complement to the blue component in the turquoise. Blimey coulda been one of those bobross happy accidents. I will definitely get that bloody viridian next time. But I got to thinking...what about other greens and bluegreens with red oranges !? ...so prussian , caribbean blue ( OH pb16 ) and the RT ultramarine green pg24 might be worth a shot. Perhaps even the manganese blue from OH pb33 and also the darker cerulean blue pb36. Cheers Dianne.

      Wonderful discovery, Paul. All those bluish-greens and greenish-blues are wonderful complements to Transparent Oxide Red which is actually in the orange range. What you discovered proves that it's a good idea to be able to identify tube colors according to their HUE. Keep going...…..

    I have a 40 year old tube of Cotman viridian watercolour that a neighbour gave to me and it is just as you describe, whereas modern viridians do seem to be less vibrant.

    • @IntheStudioArtInstruction
      @IntheStudioArtInstruction  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      My goodness! It's rare that a tube of watercolor would stay soft that long.

    • @gaelhillyardcreative
      @gaelhillyardcreative 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@IntheStudioArtInstruction It isn't terribly soft, but it's still workable; I don't use it often as it has sentimental value, and I have had it for 20 years and I look after my paints; it's been in a sealed box so I suspect that had something to do with it.

    Why would Rembrandt viridian be different than another green if the same pigment is used?

    • @IntheStudioArtInstruction
      @IntheStudioArtInstruction  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I don't have the answer to that. The viridian pigment is PG18 which is actually hydrated chromium oxide green. Perhaps is the method Rembrandt uses to process the pigment, making it dark and transparent whereas other viridians are closer to middle value and either opaque or semi-opaque, depending upon the maker.

    I think also Michael Harding makes a very good viridian, just how it looks, I never tried it. Some one have tried it? I ask because I cannot buy Rembrandt brand where I live, but I could buy a M.H.

    • @IntheStudioArtInstruction
      @IntheStudioArtInstruction  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I'm not familiar with Michael Harding's viridian, but the color samples illustrated online look very much like the Rembrandt. The quality I enjoy with the Rembrandt is its total transparency and darkness in value. I think without trying it that the Harding would work.

    I prefer tube paints. I’m not experienced enough to mix powdered paint colors nor do I want to learn or spend money on something else. (Answered from questioned asked).
