Gamblegate: The final Tory scandal of this government? | LBC analysis

  • The former Justice Secretary and Conservative candidate Robert Buckland has split from the Prime Minister and the Home Secretary by calling for those involved in the election betting scandal to be suspended.
Speaking to LBC this morning, the Home Secretary admitted that the ongoing betting scandal is “frustrating” but has denied calls for Rishi Sunak to suspend those being investigated.
A string of people with links to either the Conservative Party or No10 are alleged to have placed bets on the timing of the July 4 election before Mr Sunak announced it.
This includes Nick Mason, chief data officer for the Conservative party, who is being investigated for bets placed on the date of the election, according to the Sunday Times.
LBC understands that Mason has taken a leave of absence from his role while the matter is investigated by the Gambling Commission. He denies any wrongdoing.
“It’s of course frustrating when you have conversations about inappropriate action,” James Cleverly told LBC’s Sunday with Lewis Goodall.
But he did not agree with calls for those being investigated to be suspended, saying that it is "right" to wait for the outcome of the investigation.
Carol Vorderman wonders if this is the 'final nail in the coffin' for the Tory party.

The issue here is the Right Wing of the Conservatives. The EU Referendum was meant to quieten them, but it emboldened them. By definition, the Right are selfish and destructive, and their philosophies do not align with philosophies that benefit the general population. The Conservatives have always been ‘the nasty party’, but nasty in a traditional schoolmaster way - as in, playing fair to the point of it being irritating, and even unkind but, importantly, with future success in mind. The populism model - fuelled by social media - plays into the hands of the right and people like Farage. The Conservatives have moved this way and Labour have filled the void left behind. Now we have one major party - Labour - standing on moderate principles. The Conservatives are aiming to attract the dimwits and they’ll realise that there are fewer of them than they think.

There was a money-box at work ( it was a care-home job ) that had to be counted every time a new person came on shift. If it was ONE PENNY short it had to be reimbursed. Nothing unique about that. The point is that that is the reality most of us live in, and when we hear about what these Tory MP's get up to, it gets up peoples' noses, to put it mildly.

Instead he chooses to be a spineless creep and to avoid any responsibility in this matter whatsoever. Waiting for the gambling commission is a complete cop out and he knows it. Some people have short memories and partygate has been forgotten since Johnson left, but I have strong and fresh memories of that period of time and my recollection of subsequent numerous incidents within the conservative party of deceit, lies, illegality and scandal will not allow me to vote for them in the general election. My worry is that a vast majority feel the same way but don't want to vote for the labour party either, and the liberal democrats are a joke. My prediction is that the green party will come second because there is no other credible choice. Nigel Farage has just dug his own grave!!

    • @davidevans2863

It all dates back to the Watergate scandal involving the former US president Richard Nixon. The scandal happened in a complex of buildings known as Watergate. It was such a scandal that Richard Nixon resigned from office making him the only US president to resign. The National Lampoon jokingly referred to a situation in Russia as Volgagate and then it stuck as a sort of joke by newspapers to add -gate to all future scandals.

I always took the view that the majority of the partygate issue was political opportunism. Sunak arrives 5 mins early for a meeting and is ambushed by a cake and a receives a fine. Yet Keir Starmer's beer and curry after work was deemed ok. It was all nonsense. Gambling Gate is something else though. Complete greedy opportunism. A gift to the opposition parties. Sunak is right to follow the process and has said he will boot out from the party anyone found guilty - but nobody is listening anymore. The Conservatives are toast. Spent too much time infighting and not enough on running the country. The quality of their MPs and ministers has been abysmal. Unfortunately, I dont see things being any better under Starmer who has U turned on every promise and pledge he has ever made and who, along with the rest of his front bench, spouts gibberish in order to avoid answering a question.
