      Hi Tanya, I got Rasputin's book and cannot wait to read it. Recently, I have bought and already read a book by a Bulgarian writer Victor Paskov called A Ballad for Georg Henig. It's about an old violin maker who sees how a new generation changes their approach to the craftsmanship. It's so beautiful it made me cry. I think you may like it.

      Recently took advantage of NYRB sale of their publications .
      The World of Odysseus by M. I. Finley (USA);
      Paris Stories by Marie Gallant (Canada); Rock, Paper, Scissors by Maxim Osipov (Russia); Tarka the Otter by Henry Williamson (UK) and Three Summers by Margarita Liberaki (Greece). Very excited to read all of them. So far I have read Three Summers which I enjoyed very much. Very diverse purchase. Thank you for your channel and your suggestions.
      Look forward to your updates.

      @Jolanta Kruk I so much hope you'll enjoy Rasputin! Let me know what you thought of it once you finish. A Ballad for Georg Henig sounds great. I'll try to find it because looks like it hasn't been published recently. Maybe I'll find it on ebay. It really does sound like something I'd adore

    Such an interesting haul. Seeing Selma Lagerlöf made me smile from ear to ear 😃
    I can’t relate to finding big books intimidating...because I’m quite the opposite. I find small books intimidating 😬. Even if they read quickly (sometimes) I always end up feeling cheated, the story always feels rushed and nothing is developed or allowed to breath. We only scratch on the surface of what could have been and we are told rather than shown the story. 😔

    • @bookishtopics
      @bookishtopics  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I wish I had your approach 🌞 Big books are really quite intimidating to me. Now less so because with the book club it's a lot of fun and people encourage each other if there're some slow parts.
      I agree with you about short books often being rushed, Sometimes, I think it works quite well though. For example The Blind Owl was super short something around 100 pages, but I thought it was really well done. I need to come back to it and re-rea it. That book is perplexing but fascinating. Also Chronicles of Death Foretold. I thought was done really well even being a short book.
      Long books though totally have their very special charm because we grow to love and connect with the characters so much and it's such a great experience, having that attachment to the book. I agree that it rarely happens with short books.

    • @bookishtopics
      @bookishtopics  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I have tons of unread books to be honest, I read very very slowly 😅 but I so deadly love my bookshelves. They bring me joy with all the reading possibilities on them. Sometimes I do feel overwhelmed though and regret that I can't read faster without rushing through books. I still haven't found the balance yet, but sometimes I just really feel like buying a book, especially if I'm in a bad mood, researching books and then buying them is a form of therapy for me I guess. 😅 Sometimes books just sound so so so great and I can't resist 🙃
