Happy New Year! I ended 2021 not being able to concentrate on any book but Anne of Avonlea made all the difference! I hadn't touched the book for at least 20 years, but reading it made me happy. Cheers!

I know this feeling! I love the Anne of Green Gables series. I haven't read all books in it, I've only read the first 3, but all 3 hold a special place in my heart. Anne is just an absolutely wonderful character! I'm glad the book cured your reading slump just like Heidi cured mine this time. Happy New Year! I hope this year will bring you many happy days and plenty of great books! 🌞📚

Happy New Year Tanya 😊 you just reminded me that I have “Things We Left Unsaid” on my shelf, still unread. I completely respect your decision to post less and just concentrate on the joy of reading and picking books based on mood. No pressures! Slumps are real and I respect the amount of work you put into all your bookish content. Never feel pressured…just take your time and we will be here 😌
This year I am aiming to read backlist books, things that have been on my TBR for the longest time 😅 oh and more classics. I set myself a couple of Storygraph challenges just to encourage me to read 😉. Take care, Wendy.

Thank you, Wendy 🌞 I also want to dedicate more time to the books I've had for a while rather than looking for and buying new books. Not sure how successful I'll be at that 🌞 because I at the same time love searching for new books and then inevitably I buy some of them 😅 but hopefully this year I'll be able to control my book buying love 📚😅 I hope you have a great start to the new year and happy reading!

Hi Tanya! Thanks for your videos, they're really calming, and you inspire me to read more. This year I'm planning on reading 24 books, a crazy goal for me as I've only read 4 books last year (lol) and I don't really have a reading habit. Planning on reading the local classic books that have been sitting in my shelf for too long (books by José Rizal and Nick Joaquín, in particular), and of course more diverse classics from around the world (You influenced me to pick up a book by Naguib Mahfouz 😄). Hope you're doing great! Love from the Philippines. 🇵🇭

Hello! Best of luck to you on your reading journey this year! I really hope you enjoy Naguib Mahfouz! I also want to finally get to his Cairo Trilogy this year :) I'll check out José Rizal and Nick Joaquín as I haven't heard of them before. Thank you for letting me know about them! I hope you're having a great day! Happy New 2022! :)

@@bookishtopics Hi Tanya, it's so nice of you to reply! It's also great that you're interested in knowing about Filipino authors, as a Filipino it makes me overjoyed :) For José Rizal, I recommend his novel "Noli Me Tángere" It's a late nineteenth century novel set in the Philippines. The novel, along with its sequel "El Filibusterismo", have greatly influenced the turn of history here as the books and Rizal himself were some of the major factors that instigated the Filipino people's revolt (The Philippine Revolution) against centuries of Spanish colonial rule. Rizal was martyred because of his books. On the other hand, for Nick Joaquín, I recommend his short stories "May Day Eve" and "The Summer Solstice", along with his novel "The Woman Who Had Two Navels". They are works of magical realism and historical fiction written in the twentieth century, tackling themes of colonialism, religion, and national identity, with florid and masterful prose; because of this Joaquín's been compared to the likes of Gabriel Garcia Márquez, but I think Joaquín's one of a kind. We study their works in school, too, especially Rizal; we have two years dedicated to studying the Noli and the Fili, as we call them here, in high school. Both authors' works have been published by Penguin Classics, so you'll not have a hard time finding them, I hope :)
Pardon me for the long message, but I couldn't contain my enthusiasm haha! I really hope you enjoy their works when you read them. Happy new year, too 😄. Many thanks from the Philippines! 🇵🇭

Hi Tanya. When I once had a book "slump" I decided to try some books that I had never considered reading before. So, I selected the "Little House" books by Laura Ingalls Wilder. Perhaps you have read these. When I was growing up, I thought these were only for girls, but after I read them, I discovered that was merely boyish ignorance. The Little House books told the semi-biographical stories of a pioneer family in the upper Midwest of the US. The stories are told through the perspective of Laura, the young daughter of the pioneer family. These books were just what I needed. And they are "happy" books though there are obviously difficult times for the pioneers.
