John Oates...what the hell? The guy for decades who took a backseat to Daryl Hall for years just threw it down for us. You are more than just a guitar player an back up singer as portrayed in every article.
@@jasonfeathers7958Haha, it seems it's not about performing but selling his copyrights to a third party. The breach of contract case is about John sharing their private business-contracts without Daryl's permission. Hopefully they work it out with the lawyers....
You should listen to their EARLY, earlier stuff from the 70's. One of their least favourite albums they recorded, but one of my favourite, Beauty On A Back Street has two songs John wrote and sang, "The Girl Who Used To Be", and "The Emptyness". Him and Daryl definitely had different writing/singing/performing skills, but found ways to make it work. And. I guess that meant that John was kind of the second man. Even though, I never saw it that way. But, it's hard to argue that Daryl really was the front singer for most all of their songs. I was 10 years old in 1981, and not only became a huge fan of theirs because of Rich Girl, Private Eyes, Can't Go For That, You Make My Dreams, etc, but I became a huge fan, even at that age, and for many years to come of their earlier stuff, because I was that nerdy 12 year kid who bought ALL of their albums from old shops that carried everything from Voices, at that time, all the way back to Whole Oats. I have every album, Past Times, Abandoned Luncheonette, A Live album from the 70's, War Babies, all of it. I think you will really enjoy the two I mentioned from Beauty On A Back Street by John if you haven't already heard them. Check them out!
Yeah, he's so underrated that he sold millions of albums. Was one of the top acts of the 80's. He was inducted into the Rock n Roll Hall of Fame, and he and Daryll Hall sell out concerts tickets at every show. Sure...
How is this not getting millions upon millions of views? Top tier musicianship, groove and feel! And people'd rather listen to heavily edited stitched-and-sliced digital material.
Man oh man is he a smooth player. I never knew. This is such a great rabbit hole I have gone down tonight to see Oates play and sing with his own band. What a treasure.
Outstanding rendition of this song. I have always loved your song writing John. That's some tasty playing there Guthrie Trapp, the way you hold the pocket and support the song is something I hope to learn from.
A completely different vibe and I LIKE IT. I didn't know John could sing like this...wow!!! Super wow....not to mention his guitar playing. I am more of a fan now.

Underrated???? John: “Hold my beer.” Seriously, this gives being under rated a whole new meaning. John should be the only one to whom the term is applied to.
Yeah, I was there when the original version hit the charts in the 80's. I graduated high school in 1980. This is a KICK ASS VERSION!!! Great work John. :)
John displays fine musicianship here, great delivery, embellishments and arrangement. Often times partners in a band do their own version that sucks compared to the original, this is not the case here or in any song John has reimagined. Perfecto, keep giving us more interpretations John your performances are enhancing the catalog and your persona as a man and a musician. Daryl should be proud of you. The legal battle between the duo confirms the realities of life. I hope both parties come to a good resolution soon. This from a Diehard Daryl Hall and John Oates fan as a duo and as solo acts. John keep showing us how its done musically and how to keep the music playing.
Daryl took the lead on most Hall and Oates songs, but this reminds everyone that John Oates can sing as well. Two very talented muscians who gave us a lot of great music in the 1980s and early 1990s. A few songs since then but most of their output was those 12 years.
That was friggin awesome. I like the voice he puts on maneater, but what a brilliant style of playing acoustic. Would this be considered like maybe a jazzy-soul, piece? Does anyone have another description? I really was blown away since this was the first time I’ve ever heard him sing.
How did Daryl take all the credit? He gave Oates equal billing even though all the hits were lead-sung by Daryl and most of the hits were written by Daryl. Not sure I can think of another example of such a thing.
I hung out with one of Hall and Oates crew guys a couple weeks ago, and he said that Daryl can be a real dick. That he'll "rip someone a new one", for little to no reason, and totally ruin the vibe of the entire day for everyone.
Its not a question of downloading Daryl`s voice.............His got a killer voice.....j nor comparing apples with pears.............. If you dont admire John`s voiced its your choice............. In my book too much Hall & Oates work specially on later dates has been drowned in too many Hall voices on all levels (lead, harmony, backup, chorus etc etc) on the same track........... John Oates has got a killer voice, the 2nd of the duo, and more profund and soulful which reached me deep down, a great talent who by the way wrote a bunch of Hall & Oates hit songs........ I dont think Daryl & John even thinks about who is suppose to thank who in most succesful duo in pop of all time.... I think that ther`re just greatful to have such a talented partner..........and that they`re still together...... BUT Hall & Oates ealier stuff where much more duo orientated and much more of my liking which I miss a lot in therir later stuff.....just an opinion, but when I see many commenst on the web I feel that Im not alone with that sentiment.....
They should have alternate voices in the past per song. Now 30 years later I get to understand that number two is Awesome in voice and song version/writing.
I was hearing the pomplaloose version on this site and was about to call it the best cover of this song. But this version is the best one in this site.
What a killer version by John on hos own song which he should hace song on the original album............ A shame that he was never able to sing lead on his own songs on Hall & Oates.......... Daryl Hall has drowned the so called duo with his "Lead Singer disease..." Cheers John.......... We love you..................
Henrik Arntzen Darryls voice is so much stronger and better than johns. Johns voice is paper thin. Honestly I think John should thank Darryl every day for giving him a amazing life without sharing the work.
@@sco3putt John wrote this song. Without his writing, we would never have heard this song. The music label put Daryl up front. John has a wonderful soul filled voice. I wish we could have heard more of his singing, not the "pop" over the top versions Daryl sang.
John sang lead on some songs, even in the 80s. Italian Girls, Possession Obsession. They weren't substantial hits, though. Had John's songs been hits or very popular in live performance, he would've sung lead more. The public dictates the outcome of these things.
