So after suffering from a huge burnout after making 2 comicbooks in a row, I can say I have been deep thinking about my career. Comics are no joke and social media only makes you feel like you suck because we always see those amazing artists and see no process at all. Making a comicbook community not only serves as inspiration boost but a place to learn and make friends which is what a community is good for. I'm up for eveything I could share with you guys. Keep up the good work!
Really love the in depth comic analysis!!! Also, when Shawn said that he makes things so difficult in the name of trying to do good, it really hit home with the pressure I put on myself and my art. Really made me think about my approach to my work. Great episode!!!
To be honest, I miss those old forums compared to all the social media platforms for sure! Those were the fun days, and the camaraderie, as well as the talent pool, couldn't be beaten. Just hearing you talk about them brought up so many great memories.
Eff yeah to message boards. Even on social media, comments and messages get lost. Connecting with the artists we admire and learning, supporting etc, it’ll be way more beneficial, for both parties. It’s awesome connecting with people who appreciate your art, and improvement is accelerated by collaboration and camaraderie. I’m down for it, sign me up legends.
I am curious what art community message board did the gang remember visiting when first starting? I started my art journey on messages boards that a lot comic artist was on back in late 90's and early 2000.
It got me thinking and I wanted to share this, I think social media is killing the creativity of content creators. All the big accounts I see (whether it's illustration or music) are all stuck in the concept they are popular for. That's obviously the nature of the beast, in order to maintain your audience and your views you have to give them what they want, and all of a sudden you're now just doing variations on the same concept over and over again. It's particularly telling on Instagram where artists just basically do the same drawings with same techniques. Their profiles are full of the same things. And I would imagine that if they were to show something completely different, the algorithms would tell them, no no just stick to what gets you the most views. That's why to me it kills all creativity, it doesn't incentivize artists to look for something else, and that's a shame.
Cool to hear you guys' opinions on this topic. I think the blogging way of posting would be cool, but it should be different than before. Back in the day, I would read blogs and check artist blogposts, but I always had the problem of going to different websites or having to seek out the content I was looking for. Tumblr was a cool concept, but it was so saturated and posts got lost just like they get lost on Instagram today (this might just be a me problem). So I think it would be cool to see some kind of blogging channel where it's easy to find content.
i'm all for old forum, but it's basically what discord is used for nowadays, so i guess i'm not the only one ^^ as for blogs, i'm in, as long as there is RSS feeds and agregators, i don't have time anymore to scroll through hundreds of blogs to see if there is an update, as it's the case for a lot of people, that's why instagram took the lead at one point :)
coming back to artist blog could lead to actually pay attention to art instead of just sliding to the next micro image on the phone. Instagram's not good for art really.
