Oh wow, this is great. I really like this. It struck a chord in me. I love ❤️ it actually. Can you say it again please, this time a slightly different way so that I can be further enriched by your insight on a matter that matters more than most. It's important. It's an important chord you struck in me. Pluck it again, this time in the key of .. oh i don't know, C. Oh boy, I can't wait to see it, to hear and feel it vibrate the frequency of silence into nothing but pure quantum potential. I think you found the key to the inner universe of our humanity. Sing it again, let the angels rejoice. 😇

I hung out at 99 records and sure I bumped elbows with him looking through the crates. this was a special time where anything seemed possible. I was a punk rocker skateboarding at WSP hanging at CB's and stage diving. Now I am a hospital chaplain and what he is talking about, listening, is the key to human connection, key to creativity, key to life really.

I’ve noticed in all of Rick’s interviews his listening (*active listening*) is so much deeper than the interviewers and I have to wonder what that is like for him. I hope he has people in his life who listen as deeply to him as he does to others.

This is so true! I have a form of synesthesia which causes me to "see" sound as colorful geometric shapes.
I've been practicing music for over 20 years and during these years, and mostly because this brain condition of mine, I have come to a conclusion that musical ideas are higher dimensional structures that can be expressed(or projected) into our dimension trough different artistic mediums such as sound waves or paintings.
I dont know where(and when) these structures are located, but some people for some reason have brain circuits wired such that these structures can be perceived, explored and shared.

When documenting a conversation with someone as brilliant and articulate as Rick Rubin, get him going and then step out of the way. Dont just start talking too. Let the brilliant mind of the two of you speak. This is a trap many interviewers fall into, trying to show how they “get it” too much and too often, and with questions so long that the listener begins wishing Rick was still talking. Its unfortunate for this being as good of a document as it might have been. The questions really do get long and rambling pretty often. The “conversation” part is in being a great listener for where to follow the flow next, not just in talking also. I do mean this to be helpful, from a listener perspective. Sometimes this interview is excellent…. But clearly those times will be when Rick Rubin is sharing his insights.

Great interview. Couldn't disagree more. Tippet's method is highly intuative and conversational and many of the questions she asks lead to Ruben offering more than just the typical talking points many interviewers go for. The very final question is a wonderful example. Two thoughtful humans sharing thoughtfully about humanity. Well done to both.

We are the only creatures on this planet referred to as human “beings.” We don’t call a tiger a “tiger being” or an ant an “ant being.” Only humans are given the title of “being.” This reflects a unique capability-the ability to simply be. This state of being is a hidden superpower. When we tap into it fully, it becomes a source of extraordinary creative power.
Everything we bring into the world, whether individually or collectively, begins as a thought-and before that, it originates in our consciousness. The more we develop our awareness, the clearer our vision and the greater our ability to manifest beauty and wonder in the world. This is the essence of a way of being.

The inability to judge and access is lack of experience, especially in the art of critique. Love Rick’s response to this - write a lot. In time look at it like a reader. It’s dumbfounding to me how often Rick offers very clear & accurate advise to the people who interview him and it’s not even heard or absorbed by them in the moment. It’s obvious Rick’s had extensive therapy. It’s almost as though he has studied therapeutic rapport and all of the elements of active listening and presence.

The next book I get is going to be Rick’s book. He’s an interesting person. He’s cool because he shares. He seems unconventional on one hand and the other he’s a total genius, a wizard, I can’t believe how many different artists he worked with. He made me laugh because in another interview he was basically like I don’t use whatever piece of equipment he was describing, maybe it was some kind of sound board, I could be wrong but it’s along those lines, I laughed out loud because Rick is next level. The more I hear him talk he’s just a decent person. Raw honesty. I respect that. Great outlook on life. Starting Def Jam. That’s wild. Peace

    1. Great art comes from a certain way of being, noticing, and experiencing the world - not just from the act of making something. Cultivate presence, openness, curiosity.
    2. When getting feedback, prioritize people who genuinely care about you and your work rather than general audiences. Start with a "welcoming audience."
    3. When collaborating, focus on finding the best ideas rather than politicking to get yours to win. Remove ego from the equation.
    4. To break creative ruts, sometimes double down and go deeper into your patterns. Other times, consciously pivot and explore the opposite direction. Both can yield insights.
    5. Distractions can be good or bad. Good distractions provide just enough interference to disrupt overthinking and let inspiration through.
    6. Consume a lot of art and information, but do it for enjoyment rather than homework. Immerse yourself in what intrigues you.
    7. Commit fully to creative projects, even if you don't know where they will lead. Persist through uncertainty and allow ideas to emerge.

Two additional highlights: (1) Tippett refers to Rubin as a "midwife," which must be a reference to Plato's Theaetetus (my hope :) ) and (2) Rubin consistently says "based on" instead of the misnomer "based off."

From my life experience, the hardest part of being an artist isn't perspective, its making money.

We don't come into this world a blank slate..We have God-given talents, gifts and abilities....These must be recognized by an observant parent...acknowledged, supported, and developed...Then a flow state becomes apparent.

If anyone thinks the content of this conversation is pretentious, they are missing it. Which I would not blame them for because these are gems deep in the abyss. Basically secrets of real life magic.

I would love to know what Rick (or anyone else) thinks about medication for mental health issues and creativity. As a child I always wanted to be an artist. It was all i ever did (draw and paint) and I was all set to go to art college but at 17 I was also medicated for serious depression and whilst the medication worked in the way it was supposed to, I lost all interest in painting.
I dropped out of art school (and studied literature instead) and for a couple of decades spent my life getting up to all kinds of things except creating.
Having been on my own healing journey for about ten years, and havign peeled back various layers, I have finally reclaimed this lost part of myself and it feels so good.

Hi there, I believe medication for depression affects and dampens down the ‘Heart’ energy of the person (I trained in Chinese medicine & Shiatsu and the Heart energy is so meaningful in many ways (not limited to love but aspects of our spirit, consciousness & emotions). My own belief is that the Heart energy allows us to be in touch with our true self and express our innermost truths & passions. If you still have depression you could explore other options such as EMDR therapy or EFT which are both amazing and drug-free. Obviously please dont just stop the medication as you’d need to do that gradually and be monitored by a medical doctor. All the best🌻
