  • These “ringing rocks” in southwest Montana are a truly bizarre, geological oddity. Sitting about twenty minutes off highway 90, this massive pile of rusty colored boulders don’t seem too out of place, that is until you hit them with a hammer and they let out a loud ringing sound. Each rock produces a different tone, and one could easily spend hours drumming away one the rocks. Mysteriously, when one rock is taken away from the rest, it loses its ringing abilities.

I was told that if you remove a ringing rock from the area, it loses its ability to ring.
I found that pretty fascinating too.

At the end of the video they show a sign that is on site that states if a rock is removed it will no longer ring So weird.

My dad took a smaller one a couple years ago and it does indeed not ring anymore

It actually does ring away from the sight but the frequency is too low for human ears. The sound it produces on sight is due to those low frequencies interacting with each other causing them to get to the point at which we can hear them. They have a high content of iron and the internal structure of each rock contributes to the frequency it creates.

There's a similar ringing rocks park in PA in the Philadelphia area

I was sure this was going to be a tacky road-side attraction, but I ended up really enjoying it. If I ever find myself in PA, I'll have to go!

I don't think so, but I did read that they have a higher than normal iron composition.

What is the explanation for this phenomenon? Any scientific weigh in? They sound as though they are hollow but that cannot be. Only God can create this for the entertainment and amazement of His children.

It’s due to the fact that they are all stacked, and they are made of slick types of rock which have large amounts of metal deposits in it
