Bloody great video Eric!! It reminds me of the early years of the Internet here in 1993, with me connecting to BBS services via a modem!! You're also right about the common platforms we use today......I feel the censorship of billions of people across the world has been placed into the hands of a few large US based corporations.......and I've long thought this, me living in the UK! Thank God it wasn't China, is all I can say!?! Tim Berners-Lee invented the www to access freedom of expression for all in an IP network, and long may it continue!!! Yes, there may be some crazy people out there but hey, I meet crazy people every day and I can choose to listen to them or ignore them myself!
I am well past 20 minutes, and like all this tech have a ton of questions. Ovey. Someone needs to really package a full set of all the services needed to do this stuff and use English not the language of tech nerds. I do appreciate you pointing out this alternative. If I can get a BBS running on my Netfly presence I will be thrilled.
No, with Shoutcast, your BBS is available to the entire internet. I have callers from all over the world. They are calling right into my old laptop. It works great!
I used to run SBBS and built a door for ham radio going to the TNC and back from the TNC into SBBS so it was able to be used on the air as well. That was back in XP and I have no idea how to get it to work via Linux in a container.
Thanks for the video. I am always looking for alternatives for the family and friends to keep in touch, since I am slowly pulling myself away from the big tech tools. Can anyone recommend a good tutorial for getting this off the local network and making it accessable offsite? Thank you!
I, too am an advocate for 1st Amendment rights. However, while being able to speak freely (Freedom Speech) is a fundamental right under the First Amendment , it is not an absolute right. The Supreme Court has ruled that speech that incites or encourages violence, insurgency, or threatens the safety of other is not protected, Some of these areas include child pornography, fraud, defamation, intentional deception with intent to encourage violence, etc. Free Speech comes with a requisite of responsibility. Speech of relative truth or absolute truth is always relevant and should be protected.
No doubt! If some perv shows up on the site and posts nasty stuff, the entire laptop goes right to the feds! The yelling fire in a crowed theater exemption is....or was fairly easy to understand for most, but we now live in a time where telling the truth is considered "Hate Speech" by some companies. These micro setups are a great way to bypass that stuff.
What is your radio station I'm surprised I have not heard it, I play around appearing Kentucky I have two sets of big Gunner fours I will turn them to North Carolina and see if I can pick you up, with me I prefer to run around 26 below one on sideband,
When I click on any of the files in the infowar I gat " {"error":"Not enough credits to download this file"} " but the audio and pic files for mid night cafe and ufo pic directory downloads fine. f I'm not mistaken, this area only shows what's on you PC and not what's in/on this BBS network, like the "good old days"
Yes. Well sort of. The laptop I ran it on for the past 6 years keeps killing power supplies, so it's off line at the moment. That said, I am working on a new (old) laptop to transfer it all over to. Try again in January and it will be back online!
Being 28 unlike most my age I am NOT tech savvy. Do I need to make my own site to view all things on your site? I am not a fan of zuckbook because of certain limitations would love to get connected on here
Erik, I understand wanting to protect the first amendment, but we are going to have to agree to disagree on this. Recent events and platform blocking was to stop very un-American behavior. Just my opinion.
I get it. I am just a frim 1st amendment supporter when it comes to speech. I believe that "Hate speech" is the most protected of all speech. It's no longer a popular position to hold, but... Well, call me old fashion. I certainly don't want to make this a political thing, I just want the world to know that there are ways to leave the social media sites behind. In 10 years I predict that there will literally be laws here state side against freedom of speech. So news of these alternative methods of communications are very important to me.

A BBS can be turned into packet radio, using a TNC, in a pinch. A Technician class license the least you need needed to start.

No, you can log into my site and see the fourms with just a name and password.
