My BBS. An Alternative Form Of Communications Via The Dark Web, Or More Accurately The Forgotten Web

  • People have been asking me to make a video on this since I started this channel years ago. Sadly the once great BBS I ran on WWIV crashed a few years back and with it went years of great message bases and files. The old site had 1000's of episodes of Coast to Coast, The Midnight Cafe, As well as all kinds of declassified UFO docs, photos of ghosts,UFO's, and Creatures.
Now it is back up, but I fear I will never have the time to repopulate the files section to its former glory.
The message bases are nearly empty as well but that is something that people will need to refill. Join up, and post a message or two, and join the BBS revolution!
The address (typed into syncterm) is : Themidnightcafe.zapto.org

Wow! Back to the days of 1200 baud modems, 40 megabyte hard drives, and this new thing called the personal computer! We used the BBS to list gun shows, survival nets, and the like. It could be the greatest thing for small groups to meet privately. And then along came Windows 3.1 and the BBS's just went away. I'm glad to know they are still capable today. Thanks for the great videos you produce!

You’re by far my favorite kind of prepper nerd - a kindred spirit. I’ve often thought how these old BBS, Telnet, and USENET interfaces could be ported to amateur radio PTTY to the like. Modem over telephony bitrates are comparable to amateur radio data bitrates. (Although there’s also AREDN for WiFi-like speeds over amateur bands for long distances and high wattage too.)

I tossed a cheap charge controller into the faraday, but I can't help but wonder if the panels would be toast.

@@FarpointFarms Engineer775 has so called "EMP HARDENED System" that incudes ferite couplings but apparently that only works with the EMP hardened inverter... I have no clue how they tested these systems so i am a bit DUBIOUS. Go to the dump and get microwave ovens, they r big enough for laptops and if there is no lead on it then good cos I cut mine off anyway and sealed up the holes with aluminium tape. Emp's affect a closed circuit... eg a light globe connected to a battery will be toast.... if batteries r not hooked up they shud survive. Its been said u have to replace the starter solenoid and battery on a vehicle, unless u just replace the battery and clutch start it.

tel net dates back to 1969! prior to telnet the origins to dial-up goes back to the 1950s with SAGE. looking back telnet as old as it is, is very advanced! it is funny how we think computers are super new when the tech we had in the 1990s was common stuff in use in the late 1950 -1960s for business and government! makes one wonder what they now have! i remember reading my dad's old ford service stuff and thy talked about how abs brake works on the 1968 cougar and lincoln! it as so had a section on how the new auto light internally regulated alternator worked for 1968 cougar and lincoln . i thought it was funny how ford was still using externally regulated alternators on trucks till mid-1990s. that was a real eye-opener to the fact that we are way behind. as well as we often rediscover stuff and what is new is old! space odyssey 2001, 1963 worlds fair in Seattle , as well as AD1999 by Philco ford ware showing the 21 century in a way not far off from today and what is to be! dos is old it dates to the mid-1960s as well as UNIX but UNIX wold need till the 1970 to iron itself out.

  • @christo930

I tried connecting to it but it just times out. I used to spend a lot of time on BBSes back in the day. Started on a Commodore 64! Even when Internet started getting popular in the mid 90s, BBSes were still the best. Internet was slow and clunky as all heck. I remember wildcat (IIRC) tried making a BBS system that was graphical with a specialized client, but I can't remember what it was. There was only like 2 BBSes in my area that had it. But it didn't matter because to this day I prefer non-graphical interfaces and typing commands.
Is your system permanently down or is it just down because it just happens to be down and will come back up?
