Magia Record is like a breathe of fresh air for the magical girl genre where there's usually either just precure aimed at 5 year olds or series that try to imitate the og Madoka in going from cute to dark (which usually feels cheap). It's tone kinda reminds me of the Sailor Moon manga in feeling more traditional but still having serious/eerie moments without being completely dark fantasy. I hope Tsuruno gets something in the 2nd season as there doesn't seem to be much for me to latch to her right now.

Something that I liked about the series is that it takes a new perspective on salvation and hope, while in the madoka series the main conflict was homura trying to save madoka from being a magical girl, basically saving someone from condemnation here the main conflict it's Touka trying to save all the magical girls or in other words, save those who are already condemned and as the final episode showed, the conflict relies on "what's the cost of this salvation?"

I watched the anime before playing the game and then rewatched having played some of the game's main story (the credit card hasn't fallen into despair yet) and I can say it was way cooler the 2nd time! All the little things and people they added! I mean, part of the reason game anime gets made is to serve as promotion for the game anyway, but this one felt similar yet different as they are adjusting the story to fit its medium and not just copy paste the game's vn parts. I'm loving it so far.

I love this take! People seem to either only focus on the main cast who do appear in the show or the supposed “heads fly” bit as you say and don’t care for anything else. Some say the show is too bloated and it’s just a lot of complaints which some I get, some I don’t.
Magia Record expands on the universe and by adding some cameos even from the game makes the anime more alive and not hollow. I love it so much because of its slow-burn down time and for it to flip on your head in the last couple episodes is a real shock. It’s great and I can’t wait for the second season 💖

For me, the show's pacing is awful. Itll go from lightening fast to characters just sitting around and talking. Far too many characters introduced in such a short time. Literally nothing is explained with the excuse of, "just play the game". Little to no characters are fleshed out except for Yachiyo. Iroha, I'll admit, is a good protagonist, but sometimes she feels more of a plot device than a character. Every answer or resolution just leads to more clues or questions, and the anime quickly forgets about its goal almost as soon as they pick it up. A lot of the characters are pointless, or are not fleshed out enough to be considered characters or a part of the plot. A lot of time I'll wonder why characters are doing what they are doing because it literally means nothing in terms of forwarding the plot or could have been avoided in general. Iroha's no closer to finding her sister than she was at the episode she discovered that she forgot about her. Little Kyubey is brought up as this big plot point and then is casted aside a few episodes later without thought. Witches feel like minor obstacles rather than threats and the Usawas, while rather interesting, feel more like updated witches with little explanation. With characters in the original Madoka Magica, you knew what the characters goals were and why they did what they did. Here, you barely know the characters, or their goals just feel shoehorned in or entirely pointless to what they're doing at all. Now the good. The animation was spectacular, especially during the first episode, the fight against Yachiyo's friend, and the last episode. Like I said, I like Iroha a lot. I feel as though she was a step up from Madoka as far as powers and personality. She actually felt like a human being and less like a Mcguffin with two feet who cry 90% of the show. I like Yachiyo a lot too. I feel as though she's a step up from Homura, in fact, I like her a lot more. Homura has almost nothing going for herself apart from Madoka and has almost no history before Madoka. I almost like Felica, though not as much as Kyoko. The holy mami fight was amazing and actually made me want another season, but if it turns out that the pacing is the last one, I won't give it the time of day.

I was honestly on board with new characters of madoka since I was curious of what magical girls were like before they become witches to see the original cast murdered those witches were once magical girls and to see these girls who are naive girls don't know the darker truth and how it plays out was so refreshing to watch since we know what happens to their fate but curious about how they'll find out the darker truth and it's fascinating.

I like how rebellion basically gave people an ending many didn't realize makes sense when you realize the joke it came from....
Kuubi became scrhödinger's cat at the end of rebellion out of its own curiosity.
Very poetic and profound when between madoka God's ending and rebellion one, both endings are placed as the ultimate diametrically opposed paradox of infinity.
Kuubi can't grant either wish as granting either wish means that the system kuubi uses would self implode as neither girl would fall to depression. ..
As such when exploring or expanding this series every option is viable as long as it remains around the middle of those two...

So after finishing the first season I will admit this. I enjoyed the main cast of this anime. I didn’t mind the overall town not being completely the same as OG Madoka, but I personally do feel like the OG cast were a bit better written. Not to say that these characters in Magia record are bad because they are far from it. It’s just even with 13 episodes I wasn’t able to completely connect with all of them to point where I would be sad if they died or fell into despair. I did connect with Iroha and Yachiyo, since their dynamic reminded me a lot of Madoka and Homura but with a different feel to it. I also kinda liked the idea of their being other magical girls that are antagonists in the show. I hope S2 can expand on these new cast of characters too, because I want to love them just as much as I love the old cast.

I just finished the season. To be honest, I was pretty let down on how they've been handling the madoka characters, especially Mami. While her breakdown makes sense, it had 0 emotional buildup, and her reappearing for battle scenes makes it feel like she isn't here for any substance, it's rlly disappointing, actually. Main cast is pretty good, although underused though. Very likeable characters with great backstories.

All in all I really like Magia Record, but I did find the number of characters and pacing of the first season pretty overwhelming. I felt like the show expects you to already be familiar with the characters from the game, and it presents itself as a slightly darker take on the game's story, which I hadn't seen prior. (I also hadn't seen the original series first... yes, I know...) It was difficult trying to keep track of everyone on the first read, to the point where I kept asking, "am I supposed to remember who this character is?" by the end of the first season. Mainly with the MKR trio and Mitama. And poor Kuroe, whose like half-second of screen time before the final credits rolled seemed like it was supposed to be significant, but the moment didn't land like it could have. Maybe just a little too much was packed into the first season.
But, the music, surreal labyrinths, and dark story still kept me engaged. And the pacing in season 2 felt a lot better once I knew who everyone was.

As a long time fan of the series, and having played the game before watching the anime, I think the adaptation is pretty well put together, but still doesn't quite compare to the original story written by Gen Urobochi. The writing for the game's story wasn't really good tbh, kinda dragged on most of the time (but I guess that's games in general). The anime had to work off of that, but the differences are largely improvements to the original story imo.
BTW, I can't help but notice that you keep referring to Yachiyo by her last name Nanami, as if you were addressing her with higher respect.

The biggest problem the anime had was the sheer constraints put around it. Only Arc 1, and only 25 episodes. Production pretty much became a nightmare in S2+3, and it shows.
I do respect the team trying their best to give us a "complete" story while under so much pressure, but...I just can't enjoy some of the writing decisions that came about in S2 and Final Season because of these constraints.
I think it's important to know that the anime was never about "fixing" the game story, but rather showing a failed version of the Arc 1 story. Contrary to popular belief, DoroInu does enjoy game story and wanted to make a really faithful adaption for the anime, but just couldn't do so due to the limits placed on him. He does encourage the audience to look into the game and make comparisons between the anime and game's Arc 1, then go on to read Arc 2 and see what comes after.
With the influx of new players coming to the game after the anime's end, I think in the end I'm at least glad that the anime existed.

Something this series has going for it that the original doesn't is sustainability. You can't JUST write Madoka Magica season 2, you have to write a Sequel, since PMMM is a complete storyline. Even rebellion doesn't really change that fact, the story is just not something that can be pushed on to last for that long without things getting extremely forced and convoluted (which indeed happened with Rebellion).
Magia Record however? I Season 1 asks for a second season, and the setup is open ended enough to continue throughout multiple arcs without losing momentum as quickly.
Obviously this isn't inherently a good thing, since shorter stories have their benefits, but we already HAVE the perfect short story form of PMMM. So having something more sustainable here is good if only for variety's sake.

Although it does get pretty sad in places, the show ends on a happy note. Maybe bitter sweet for one or two characters, but over all it's pretty uplifting. Most people tend to leave that part out of the conversation when talking about the show. I'm no fan of shows that are depressing start to finish either, but I think Madoka Magica is definitely worth a watch.

its pretty random how lots of people are just basically criticizing on magia record. it's almost like they're not even trying to see the good quality things in the magia record anime. the anime may not be perfect but who said everything had to be so perfect. and why even continue watching it if you're just planning to start spreading heavy criticism? like jeez these people are just random on these things expecting the "perfect" quality they expected. it's not like they themselves would make a much better version of magia record JUST like that.
so ye lol i just sent out all my frustration about the heavy criticism on magia record in this one singular comment.

It has a good anime. But i didnt really enjoy it as much as people like you do. I like its existance as just showing us what other magical girls are like, but overall i woudnt say its the best.
The best parts of the anime, and my favorite parts is, kyubaby(or baby kyubey if your boring) just constantly swearing. Call me immature- cause i am- but whenever it just goes "pyuk you >:3" it always manages to me snicker and giggle

So after seeing the final episodes to Magia Record.... I am so mad.
For me, the first season of Magia Record was perfect. The second season was pretty good until one decision was made: have Nemu remember Ui and explain the mystery.
That one thing is what doomed the ending

tbh, im insanely late, but now that we finnaly got this show fully dubbed,
Jesus christ the cast both in enlgish and japanese really killed it, mainly sora and erika harlachers proformace as yachiyo (blue haired magial girl with spear) Tbh, thats a big reason why i love this show, it brings voice actresses best role calls and puts them in a show ,
Like, again with yachiyo, her english voice actress, eriak harlacher, rarely plays more..... sarrow charaters, like, lets look at her most iconic roles, venti, ann from persona 5, juna crawford, violet evergreen...and then we get... to yachiyo, someoen who has lost everything, and our normally bubbly va has to go with a darker route, and she fucking kills it
Same with ihora english voice, she is most known for play punk chartares, her most famous one being 2b from neir. but here, she is a soft little bean who wants to protect others, and she nails it.
Im fully aware this is not the point..but its another reason why i find this show a soild 9, it does have issues but..i still love this show to bits. (also..shoutout to all the dub from PMMM coming back for record, i love that so much)

I personally watch magica record more than madoka magica since it's character development is more interesting and more heartbreaking from the original series. not to say the original series is bad but felt more new and modern madoka and make it more interesting.

Character development? Was character development when Alina the girl that feared becoming a witch just wants to turn the whole planet into witches starting with herself in the end? They threw her character arc out of the window.

For me, the show's pacing is awful. It'll go from lightening fast to characters just sitting around and talking. A lot of the time I'll wonder why characters are doing what they are doing because it literally means nothing in terms of forwarding the plot or could have been avoided in general. She actually felt like a human being and less like a Mcguffin with two feet who cries 90% of the show.

I really had high expectations for this series and i was so happy when they announced it ...but i was kinda disappointed when i watched it ...something feels wrong about the anime but i can't put my finger on it... And the thing i hated most About it is the protagonist ...they made her too similar to madoka and it's annoying

I really really wanted to like magia record but god damn is it boring. Madoka Magica's story is absolutely amazing, so I had super high expectations. I sat through season one waiting for something to just take me for a loop, for a twist to surprise me with how much foreshadowing I missed. This never happened. Nothing new, nothing interesting, nothing important. It's just a mediocre sidestory that didn't add anything to the story, it didn't need to exist.

Personally I found magia record kinda shit. It was boring, I didn't care about very much most of the characters and I think there's some bs that didn't make sense.
Which is weird 'cause it has most of the elements that anime needs to be entertaing. But the fact is that it's shit in my opinion is a fact, I dunno, I don't feel like giving a way to fix it so lol

Tbh, I didn't really enjoy it as much as I thought I would, but i'm going to rewatch it before season 2 comes out, and hopefully my opinion changes. But can we all agree that that mami vs sayaka fight was pretty damn good xD!

      I have the same feelings.
I already finished the story in-game and from the sneak peaks we've seen from season 2, specifically the shot where Iroha stands alone in a fire as she points her arrow at something, shit will hit the fan.

The show seems VERY hit or miss for most people. I really liked it, but I understand others issues. Hopefully season 2 will be way better as the story itself gets much more interesting and a good season 2 can make season 1’s flaws much more bearable.

I felt it like a refreshing bunch of filler episodes. Very little of the first season was actually relevant and then when something interesting happened it finished.
