So you're telling me, Nakizawa. A literal background character, was dragged into the bullshit of the main characters plot line just to deliver a single line?
    Beautiful. Truly.

I think that Sayaka's "is this really so bad" speech was her trying to stop Homura's self-destruction once she figured out the truth. Homura sees the Witch of the Labyrinth as someone who gave up her duty as a magical girl and is besmirching Madoka's sacrifice, unaware that she's talking about herself; so Sayaka is basically saying "don't be so hard on yourself for indulging in this fantasy".
Also, I remember someone bringing up the "power of names" in regards to who gets brought into the Labyrinth. The other girls get brought in because Homura personally knew them, Kyosuke and Hitomi get brought in because Homura knows about them from them being behind Sayaka's despair, Madoka's family gets brought in because they're important to Madoka, and the teacher gets brought in because Homura paid attention to her as a student. Nakazawa is seemingly the odd one out, but is actually someone Homura is also aware of due to the teacher constantly calling on him by name.

Also Sayaka told Homura that maybe, just maybe she shouldn't kill the witch once she finds it, which makes even more sense now that I've read your comment.

It was always my belief that If sayaka had just told homura outright that she was the witch of the labyrinth, either homura just wouldn’t believe her, or the labyrinth would undergo a transformation magnitudes more volatile and destructive than the one we see in the movie, to the point where it could potentially endanger the people in the labyrinth, including madoka.

When Homura accuses Bebe, Bebe does try to tell her. She's mumbling "Kyubey... Kyubey..." while being strangled.
That aside, I believe the reason they didn't tell Homura was... Well you know how antagonistic Homura and Sayaka can get. It was best to let her find out in her own pace.

You were right about Kyoko (and Mami) being different in Rebellion from the original timeline. She’s from the wraith arc manga, and possibly had memories of when Sayaka was taken by the law of cycles, not the sacrifice :,)

Honestly I feel like the reason why Nagisa hesitated so much is kinda self explanatory, she's young, really young.
Already dealing with stuff revealed in Magia Record that caused her to become a witch she's probably still struggling a lot with thinking rationally.

Ok but like I love Sayaka and Kyoko's wordless affection like people don't understand how significant of a gesture sharing food is from Kyoko like guys!
We can infer that Kyoko's habit of snacking comes from her food insecutity growing up, she seems neurotically diligent in not wasting and having a surplus of food. In the show the most significant gesture she gives to Sayaka is giving her literally ONE APPLE from her bag of like 15. This is deadass the most raw and real she ever behaves with someone and the fact that she seals it with the gift of food is VERY siginificant for her.
Now understanding all of that, SHE AND SAYAKA ARE WHOLE ASS SHARING FOOD TOGETHER. She isn't just offering a few chips or something like that they are playfully sharing and splitting a small portion of pokey without even BLINKING (ok well maybe she blinked but that's not the point) she even contines the conversation while sharing food together.
ALSO we can make the observation that sayaka displays a lot of affection through physical action, be it roughhousing or tackle hugs. Now when we look at the movie, they are playfighting, chasing eachother poking eachother and both being generally very physical and affectionate. (they also hold hands while the backround is a rainbow but pshhhhsjsksfldskd)
all and all these two are literally the most affectionate with eachother than we have EVER seen them with anybody at all. they both are also engaging with and reciproricating these methods of affection. LIKE???? HELLO???? HUH?? if either of them was a guy we'd just accept they were dating like yall come on read this text.

IDK between those two and Homura and Madoka's conversation where Madoka starts it ON TOP OF HER and then leans back before GOING BACK ON TOP OF HER AGAIN, (also madoka braiding her hair while hugging and comforting her is like???)
these bitches gay, good for them, and they're also displaying affection beyond dialouge which eats.
(idk pmmm is very good and does that a lot but still its very good in this movie)

Sorry, i'm late to the party!
I think the main reason why Sayaka "returned" was Kyoko, but the reason why she and Bebe took their time to tell Homura the truth, was to not make matters worse. I mean, Homura wanted to find the witch and kill it as quickly as possible, which didn't change even after she found out that the witch was, in fact, her. This would probably mess everything up and it would be harder to achieve Sayaka's and Bebe's goal. Right after Sayaka said the words: "Is it really that bad?", she also told Homura that MAYBE she shouldn't kill the witch after all. She indirectly implies that the witch is on their side. Sayaka was trying to stop Homura from self-destruction. At least that's my take on her and Bebe's motives, but i do love your perspective as well! It totally makes sense how Sayaka would use the chance to live the life she always wanted, alongside Kyoko.

I never thought about it but I always reasoned that either 1) bebe/Sayaka retained some of their character development because the law of cycles is protecting them but because Homura is in control of the labyrinth and they are in her labyrinth first and foremost their memories were still altered. At the beginning, Homura has an iron grip on her reality/labyrinth even if it’s subconscious. It’s only when she started to question herself that her grip loosened and the memories of Sayaka returned. Or 2) alternatively, this is what Homura wants them to be like and that’s why their memories were altered so that they might act that way. It makes sense that homura would like to be welcomed into the group warmly, so sayaka doesn’t have any disdain for her joining and in fact is happy about it etc. But as Homura begins to question herself, her grip on the world loosens again and their memories return.
Either way, Bebe isn’t that affected by it because in the original timelines Homura never knew her. The others were her friends at some point and they are always the center of everything that happens in every timeline. But Bebe was basically just kind of..there..and Homura subconsciously did her best to fit her into her ideal world.

And this friends is why we click on videos from channel's you've never seen before just to get a madoka fix.
In regards to why Sayaka and bebe taking so long to tell anyone or drop hints I like to think its cause they think Homura needs to realize she's a witch on her own before they can safely break her out. Also we know that both of them came on the mission because they wanted to do something they couldn't do in magical girl heaven (Sayaka seeing kyoko and Bebe eating cheese).
And for the Sayaka, Kyoko relationship in the timeline after godoka the wraith arc manga actually paints a pretty good picture of how they were their last few days together.

  • @Starlight-Tale

Personally I feel like the reason she took her time was because she wanted to try to unweave Homura’s spiral of self-hatred first so that she wouldn’t destroy herself when she learned the truth, and that’s also why when they have their iconic conversation, Sayaka acts so sympathetic to “the Witch of this labyrinth”. (Granted given how things played out it seems like this effort didn’t work, but… she tried.)
Though the idea that she was tempted by Homura’s sweet word is interesting, given, as you said, she did admit that part of the reason she accepted the assignment was to see Kyoko again and how she regretted leaving her behind. I already did think Bebe was tempted by Homura’s world, given she’s a young child, and comment about wanting to eat cheese again aside, she probably treasured being loved and cared about by a big-sister figure like Mami.

  • @buttercupghost
    @buttercupghost 2 ปีที่แล้ว +60

Sayaka is not from the timeline we see in the series. The Sayaka we see here is one that was taken by the law of cycles, and was told by Madoka how much Homura did for her. She knows what it's like to despair, so she empathizes with Homura, but she was saved in this timeline by Madoka. She sees Homura as someone like her; someone who despaired and cared for Madoka. Madoka's other best friend. You seem to think Sayaka is the one we see from the series timeline, but that timeline is gone. The timeline she came from was the one that resulted from Madoka's wish, not the series timeline. Sorry, I'm only three minutes in so idk if you realize this further into the video (if so feel free to disregard) but yeah, none of the characters are from the timeline we see in the show, but the one that resulted from Madoka's wish. I'll edit this comment if I have more to say further in!
Edit: We see in the series that Sayaka is actually really good at acting! We see after Mami died she still pretends to be energetic towards Hitomi to the point where no one realizes anything is wrong. So I definitely think she has her memory and is just acting! All the actions she takes implies she has her memories, so I think that is the case!
Edit 2: One of the reasons I think Sayaka stalls on this mission is not just to play out the part of a defender of justice, *but to get more time with Kyouko.* She even states at the end the reason she took this job was because she regretted leaving Kyouko and not saying goodbye. She wanted to spend a little bit longer with her friend.
Edit 3: Oh! Nevermind my last edit, we're on the same page! Yes, I totally think she was stalling for Kyouko. She just wanted to spend more time with her cough girlfriend cough I mean friend.

this is why I’ve subbed to you: we’re both Madoka freaks who won’t shut up and I stan also my thoughts are blow hehe
The theory of Sayaka and Nagisa living out their selfish wishes and desires in a seemingly perfect world when they can’t have it outside is so upsetting yet it makes so much sense because as a viewer, and I’m pretty sure most of us- wanted this reality for our girls. And when Sayaka says to Homura: “Is it really that bad?” I wondered the same thing.
In a way, even though it was only a CONCEPTS compile in a FIVE MINUTE RUN TIME: the dialogue between Homura and Madoka about happiness and that God didn’t have such things even furthers Homura’s motivations to execute her plan to dethrone Madoka to give her a new life. Going for Sayaka and the others as well. Especially Sayaka. Even though they hate each other, love their dynamic.
I hope one day we will get a sequel for Rebellion because the amount of potential we can have for our girls to fight for what is right versus do what you desire will be a long, heart-wrenching battle.
now excuse me I have to rewatch that movie again and cry

The fact that sayaka still is the witch she turned into is very poetic. You are the culmination of all your experiences after all, and Sayaka still harbours the cynicism that turned her into a witch in the first place.
Also I find it weird and funny that the teacher of all characters is the one to predict the end of Homura’s labyrinth in this movie. She literally goes on a tirade about the destruction of the world and then says “speaking of, here’s the transfer student” and then introduces Homura into a story about Homura destroying the deluded world she created for herself

I think that they kept quiet for so long mainly because Homura was happy at first. They had to wait until she started to suspect before they could start to guide her towards the truth, allowing her time to come to terms with it. And I think that's because it's what Madoka wanted them to do.
Knowing Madoka, she would want Homura to forgive herself for what she did to get to this point, forgive herself for all the people she stepped on, forgive herself for allowing herself to become a thing Madoka gave her life to prevent ever existing again. And so that's the plan she had, the instructions she left to Sayaka and Nagisa/Bebe. She expected that allowing Homura time to slowly discover the truth would give her time enough to accept her actions and mistakes, and then finally be able to join the Law of Cycles afterwards...
... But even though Madoka has seen what Homura needed to do to get here, has seen every universe with Magical Girls - that's not the same as UNDERSTANDING Homura or anyone fully. She expected Homura to accept her flaws and be at peace with them. Instead Homura embraced those flaws openly and brazenly, and used them to shield Madoka away from harm and away from her own wish.
Essentially they took their time and only hinted because Madoka doesn't fully understand Homura and how badly the time loops broke her.

I like the English dub of Rebellion especially because of the scene with Kyouko and Sayaka while fighting Homura’s witch. In the Japanese dub, Sayaka says, “the fact that I left you behind.” Whereas in the English dub, she says, “You. I missed you.” It’s simpler but sO MUCH MORE POWERFUL AND ROMANTIC-
also, I always assumed Sayaka and Bebe knew absolutely everything the whole time in Homura’s labyrinth. So, I totally thought Sayaka’s “EHHHH?!?!?!” to Homura in the classroom was her acting, badly 😂

Sayaka in the movie basically is the same person that watched the recital of "Ave Maria" with Madoka(in that stage even Mami and Kyouko knew everything) and whether that includes just the previous timeline or not she is still very much the person with the worst relationship with Homura in the entire cast.
Sayaka, like the incredibly egocentric person she is, wanted to reveal stuff to Homura slowly after about a week of nice magical girl adventures because she herself wished all the bad reveals she had were handled with kid gloves with hints that she could feel at least good about herself for figuring out while at the same time having a whimsical mentor that she is honoring Homura the priviledge. Which is TERRIBLE though as Homura is someone that would appreciate the clinical and full explanation without all that panache as she is not as brittle as Sayaka in any way and the whole strategy ended up blowing in everyone's faces as she dwelled in her misery long enough where her relationship with the hope of her wish changed(so far every time that happaned the person became a witch, except in Kyouko's case as what she personally wanted wasn't exactly taken from her as she wanted to not suffer poverty anymore).
Homura reached a point where her hope didn't degenerate into despair but merged with it(as her own way of being with Madoka would be a scenario of becoming the villain that would recue her against her own wishes) and that transformed her into a devil.

  • @BrandonB...

To be honest, I feel that Sayaka and Bebe's actions can be explained by the fact that they're here in the labyrinth for Madoka's sake, not for Homura's sake. Madoka is the one constantly reaching out with clear emotional investment (even though she doesn't have her memories). In contrast, Bebe literally says something like "what a bother" about the whole ordeal near the end.
For those two, it's a mission for Madoka. For Madoka, it's a desperate attempt to save someone she really cares about.

I know this is very late: but the reason neither Bebe or Sayaka directly tell Homura she is a witch is because when Homura discovers she had already become a witch, it was a very traumatising realisation. As we already know: a witch's psyche reflects the world. This would have not only put Sayaka, Bebe (the ones in possession of Madoka's memories) in danger, but also Homura and all the inhabitants sucked into this labyrinth (Mami, Kyoko, etc.)
In therapy, you don't really want to flat out tell the client/victim of their trauma. You would want to ease them into it, letting them the room to figure it out on their own terms, and that is what we see in Rebellion.
I don't know if you noticed, but when everyone fought against the witch version of Homura, they eventually shattered the barrier, and we see the Kyubeys watching everything from below. My theory is Sayaka and Bebe were putting on a show in the beginning, not to alert awareness as to why they were there. I don't believe Sayaka delayed our of selfishness, as you can really tell her character has grown so much in Rebellion: scenes of her gently caressing Hitomi, or the scene where she talks to Homura and sympathies with witches (indirectly referring to Homura). She still has the desire to be with Kyoko, yes, but it isn't through selfishness. More of a "I want to see you one last time" kind of desire

The Judgmental Critter had a theory that the Modoka was a fake in the beginning, but and her transformation sequence was the exact time the real Modoka/Modokami got trapped in the labyrinth. So it's possible that bebe and Sayaka were also fake at the beginning but the real ones got trapped after Modoka got trapped. Probably during their first fight in the film which was where Sayaka shows signs of remembering what happened.

Honestly? I'm sure sayaka and bebe were the only people who'd stay on task because kyoko would just flat out tell her and mami would try to put it gently. Just sayin.

You know I would be totally on board with the Sayaka X Kyoko ship but tbh I just see them as besties compared to something more obviously romantic like Homuras feelings for Madoka. Also I havent played it at all but I heard someone say Magia Record implys that Sayaka might still like Kyosuke so that kinda throws a wrench in things as well but I guess someone can multiple crushes at once.

Gen Urobochi only said they were "soulmates", which meant it could go either way. He was leaving it up to the fans, but not specifying their relationship one way or another.

I sort of disagree with some stuff during the end about Sayaka's self-righteousness, but more specifically the misinterpretation about the Sayaka and Homura scene. One of the top comments already talks about what they think the scene is about, and theyre actually right. The scene isnt "Sayaka trying to convince Homura that this world isnt so bad in order to stay there as long as she can", its Sayaka innadvertadly telling Homura to not be so hard on herself.
When she says "do you think this witch is really THAT evil" (i forgot the exact line sorry), its because Homura's insisting that this witch needs to be punished and is a coward, but she's unknowingly talking about herself. Sayaka does know though, hence why she says what she says. Good video

Question... Did other witches that... Did exist with Madoka... But technically shouldn't have ever been witches because Madoka erased witches before they were hatched, but they must have hatched because you see their familiars...
Gah, time travel makes my head hurt.
Anyways, the question I had before a single sentence had me questioning my sanity...
Did other witches that weren't pulled into Homura's labyrinth and were still feasting in Madoka's Magical Girl Valhalla ™ somehow send their familiars (which, mind you, they never should have had, because... Nope, nope NOPE not doing that again) to assist in the operation? There was a ton of those cotton ball things, can't remember, but I think they had an almost normal sounding name like Gary or something, there was a few of those weird disembodied legs wearing ice skates from the class representative witch, plus Nagisa's nurse mouse familiars. Only familiars I feel didn't make an appearance were Sayaka's shadow Hitomi's. If they did send them... HOW?

It's not a new Kyoko because of how they treat the characters when they go to purgatory. Also it parallels what Homura does to everyone at the end. These are the original versions, but their memories are completely wiped for the most part. Except Madoka's angels Sayaka and Nagisa. Which you pointed out.
The Madoka is likely a puppet as well since it is homura's labyrinth. Madoka cannot exist in reality because she erased her existance to become a god. Reason being we see what happens in the anime how kyubey makes Magical Girls. He invokes the wish, Rips their heart out, and turns it into a soul gem which is why they die when it's destroyed. If anyone isn't convinced look closely at the shadows when Sayaka makes her wish. This is important to understanding what happened to Madoka. Madoka killed herself to save all magical girls which is why she can't exist normally because she destroyed her soul gem/heart.
That said a lot of this got retconned in magia record anyway to where this movie isn't canon to that story. The kyoko from that one is the one from oriko magica though along with the mami of that one. Which is why kyoko x mami is what they go with in magia record. It combined all of the mangas into one story. We still get some Sayaka x Kyoko in her pull video though because the Sayaka, Homura, and Nagisa are the ones from the original anime and not the ones from the magia record world. Demon Homura isn't canon, but they did make Homura one of Madoka's angels in compensation. They did an entire event in the game for Ultimate Madokas grand entrance which was Sayaka and Nagisa had their releases together and then Ultimate Madoka came out right after, and then the original Homura followed Ultimate Madoka which looked like she was stalking her. xD
Magia Record is a parallel universe meant to wrap the series up forever. Even though Madoka is the god of cycles in it. Her power did not effect this world with her laws. Which is how witches still exist, but other things also exist because she is still effecting the world with her power. Ultimate Madoka is likely why Witches resorted to becoming Dopples to preserve themselves from her. That said I can only care so much because Aniplex/Crunchyroll shafted the entire western audience.
Figured I'd cover some more version swaps cuz they fun with this series. Even if the video is old now. xD

5:00 actually since Bebe isn't as big of an idiot as Sayaka we do have an answer. When in stopped time and dealing with her interrogation she starts handing over information immediately and even tells Homura about Kyubey directly. There was always the possibility she at least wasn't telling her because they needed to make sure they weren't being spied on by Kyubey or that any reluctance was done because of the effects of the witch after the secret is out of the bag in an unorganized manner because they were being spied on.
Like how they up accidently letting Homura go off and attempt suicide when it comes time to organize the girls when the secret is out.

I'm pretty sure the Sayaka in rebellion is not the one from the main series or any other timeline Homura created.
Madoka turned into a concept that nobody alive (except Homura) and maybe her little brother could remember, so this Sayaka would have had no clue who Madoka was, how she was connected to Homura or that Homura could remember Madoka.
So anything Sayaka knows about Homura and Madoka's relationship couldn't possibly be her own memories when she was alive, but came from her connection with Madoka and being part of the law of cycles.
Not that this changes mmuch about the theory, since that is about Sayaka not losing her memories upon entering the labyrinth (at which point she already got the memories in question from Madoka), so it works the same (or not) regardless of whether the momories are in fact her own from being alive or gained after dying.

I think she waited to tell Homura to makesure she knew everything she could before blowing her cover. It may be tempting to go in guns blazing right away, but it's better to make sure you know what does or doesn't work or even make sure the use of attacks doesn't strengthen the enemy. It's kind of opposite to how she was in the main series, which is very interesting, but maybe that came from time to actually live out decades or even centuries as a magical girl and having Kyoko by her side for much longer.
Plus Bebe might not be the easiest watch to defeat, but se certainly isn't a problem for Homura to kill. Maybe she was worried of being killed if she didn't word things perfectly with the one who is the most unstable in the situation.
Then again, I don't fully understand how everyone is in Homura's labyrinth and waiting outside to see Homura laying down and Godoka themselves.

quick disclaimer, haven't read the wraith arc, also spoilers for it.
I'm pretty sure Homura has memory manipulation abilities because of her keeping her memories despite them never happening and I think it's a major plot point that she doesn't know if she used them on herself to conjure madoka. It's possible Sayaka tried the blunt force method already, only for Homura to erase her own memories and reset everything to square one, since Homura has a lot of experience doing that (ba dum tiss). Also, a Sayaka with her memories knows firsthand that a magical girl that knows more than she should is very suspicious, that's what causes *most* of the friction between her and Homura in the final loop, so she'd probably be hesitant to start dropping hints out of nowhere. Since she waits to make her move until Homura witches and nukes the monitoring kyubei, that's also probably a factor in why she waits. I did NOT think about the stalling angle and I really like it, especially since Sayaka and Nagisa came back for their respective one true loves, Kyoko and cheese.
I don't really like the self delusion angle, since while you can look at it as she likes playing as a hero of justice, I prefer to think that she has grown past her selfish martyring and is willing to let herself indulge in the simple pleasures. The only reason why Sayaka dies in the shown timeline is because she rejects Kyoko's "live for yourself" mentality out of hand and is thereafter too prideful to take grief seeds as a reward for her service even when they're literally being thrown at her. This directly got Kyoko killed, burdened everyone around her with grief, and almost got Madoka to contract, if that's not just her being suicidal then that is a clear character flaw that needs addressing. From this angle, accepting that she's delaying her mission to mess around in Homura's labyrinth is healthy and demonstrates her growth as a person, and if Sayaka was in this headspace for the main series I'm entirely certain they'd all die horribly against walpurgisnacht, lol.
tldr I think Sayaka in Rebellion has undergone some offscreen positive character growth that I think is a perfect continuation of her arc in the series.

Okay I genuinely wanna know what that rando did to Homura that got him dragged into her labyrinth, like everyone else has at least SOME connection to her. What did he give her a soda or something in the OG timeline?

It probably has something to do with their teacher interacting with him in all the timelines thus subconsciously bringing him inside the labyrinth simply because the teacher which she used to care about always brought attention to him which is funny lol
