This video made me smile so hard and took me back to when my nephews were Hayden's age. Now, they are having kids of their own. Ugh, that time doesn't last long enough. Edited to say: that crunch tho. Now I wish I made fish tonight instead of chicken lol

I have not had any smelt in years. When it was time for me to go back to sea I would go stay at my grandmother's for a week before I left. She loved fish so I would cook her smelt. I baked it in the oven. Very sweet firm white meat with bones you can eat. It was good seeing you fish with your family. You don't forget those memories.

It's a good thing you didn't catch much in Malibu. The entire So Cal coastline is polluted, and it's advised not to eat the fish from there. It's not uncommon for the local health depts to issue warnings against going into the water due to high levels of E-coli, other harmful bacteria, and chemicals.

We dip net smelt every year. They're better if you get them in the ocean surf (lots of work), The ones in Puget Sound are really good also. The ones in the rivers are starting to soften from the fresh water but still good for smoking. We don'scissors
Quickly stir fry in oil and you can eat the bones and head for a little crunch. I can usually eat about 25 or 35 if I have an appetite booster like a few beers and a joint. Clean, mild and yummy.
    Good video Mark!

The butterfly prepped smelt reminds me of another fish I ate like that as a kid. Sanma no hilaki, basically it was a small mackerel that was butterfly cut, and it was cooked on a grill like the one you have. Love your videos man, watching the foods you cook and listening to you speak Japanese takes me back to my early childhood days!

We used to net and eat a lot of Rainbow Smelt from Lake Erie back in the 60’ and 70’s. We are talking netting trash cans full. It was common to have beach parties during the Smelt run. Unfortunately their numbers fell way off. I think it coincided with the stocking of Salmon and Trout in the lakes.

Another great video M. I really think your onto something with the smelts. First thoughts went to a net then cage pot then the simple concept of a fishing pole, with a small gill net bundle along with bait inside set in. Maybe jig poling it for claws?

My grandmother used to cook smelt for Christmas eve. There was another fish but I'm not sure what it was, very salty and came in a wooden box. But the smelt, main reason I don't mind anchovies on a pizza, it taste similar to the smelt I had as a kid

Sardines aren’t typically eaten fresh in the US, but canned sardines are widely available here. Stop looking for a problem where there isn’t one
