A model monarch, both for scholarship and military. The best this island has seen and one of the most fascinating characters in history! David Dawson did a phenomenal job as Alfred and was very much a missed part of the shower after S3.

Although the Last Kingdom has certainly taken artistic liberties, I will forever love David Dawson's portrayal of Alfred, because it was a huge part of what shaped my fascination with the man. Today I have visited Winchester for the first time to see the final resting place of his father and grandfather and to, perhaps, stand somewhere close to where he himself lays, undiscovered. It is safe to say that if it weren't for this show and the books, I would never have learned anything more of Alfred than that he was one of many past kings of a country that is half a continent away from mine.
Favourite character hands down on Last Kingdom. David Dawson's acting was absolutely impeccable. Masterful. Moving. Powerful. He embodies Alfred perfectly and showed him to be one of the strongest characters on the show, and one of the strongest kings in fiction. I always loved Last Kingdom, but it just was not the same after Alfred's death. Loved his character so much.
I love that one of the few times he loses control of his emotions are when Uhtred betrays him. Despite not liking his religion and finding him frustrating, he loves and trusts Uhtred and knowing he drove him away nearly breaks him.
I think maybe you didn't mean to call Alfred 'fiction'. He was a real person

Thank you. David Dawson gave such an amazing performance as Alfred, one of my favourites from the show. This really captured the essence of that performance and the complex, flawed but great man he so brilliantly portrayed.

I agree totally. An amazing man! And to think he did so much for his people while battling Inflammatory bowel disease, probably Crohn’s. He did much to preserve the history and culture of the Anglo-Saxons more than anyone, even the Venerable Bede. I find him a very relatable man. A truly great man and King.
And Dawson portrayed him so perfectly.

This guy is a great actor. I am not an expert on quality acting. But he really has you believing hes Alfred. He makes you feel the frustration and admiration Uhtred has for him. Great performance. Such a nerdy looking guy comes off as such a bad a@#...there are very few acting performances that stick w me like his portrayal as alfred...he made me hate him but also like him

The TV show felt much much emptier without this character, he truly did make the show a massive part of wht was interesting; despite not being I suppose the 'main character' - But truly did add a MASSIVE amount to this show.

The series lagged a bit after Alfred died that dynamic was strong like in the books..but that takes nothing from this stunning edit

I just realized something. Some people can dress up and pretend to rule. But a true King knows deeply those flaws cannot bring the leadership, the strength to rule a nation and its people.

Hi Bernice, I love the last kingdom and well worth a watch and something to get into! Outlander S7 first 8 episodes came and flew by! But I’ve enjoyed seeing the Jamie and William scenes. It’ll be amazing when William finds out! I’m doing okay thank you ☺️ Tried to make the most of summer so far with some lovely trips to places like Whitby Abbey 🥰 How are you doing? Sam & Graham are doing so well with the Māori Culture, they always lift my spirits with their high jinks and sense of adventure, Sam is unstoppable but has to win most of the time, Graham doesn’t do so bad at keeping up with him, I was quite impressed with him:). Nice to hear you are getting out and about despite the British weather indeed 🥴 will you be making any videos of the battle scenes in Outlander! they were pretty impressive I thought 🤔

Much of it is true. Well, the main historical events anyway, and he did far more than covered in the series. There is a reason he is one of the few monarchs to be called The Great.

Only Alfred was able to truly contain Uhtred. And Uhtred admits so in the books.
Alfred made Uhtred fight first for glory, then for his brother, then Athelflaed, then Athelstan and lastly Bebbanburgh
But all the time Uhtred really was fighting for Alfred and his dream of England.
This begs the question what did Alfred see in Uhtred. He says so numerous times in the books and series - in Uhtred he sees the England that is to come. Perfect mixture of the bravery of Northmen and the piety of the Saxons. Too bad this was embodied by the Normans more

To me the show died with Alfred. The quality dropped so much that subsequent seasons seemed like another show.
