How Realistic Is ‘The Last Kingdom’ Actually? | Bamburgh Castle

- Fans of the Netflix series 'The Last Kingdom' will know all about Uhtred of Bebbanburg, the wandering warrior who fights to regain his lost homeland. But did you know that Bebbanburg was a real place during the Anglo-Saxon period? And it still exists, we just call it Bamburgh Castle in Northumberland. It's a dramatic setting on the rugged coast of north east England, and easily one of the most iconic castles in Britain.
Uhtred was a real person, too, or at least an Uhtred. The so-called Uhtred the Bold ruled Northumbria from Bebbanburg in the early 11th century, and he was the inspiration behind the Bernard Cornwell character. His story is just as fascinating and action-packed as the fictional tale, and his loyalty was constantly tested by Saxon and Danish kings, just as they are in the series.
Join medieval historian Matt Lewis as he untangles the fact from the fiction, unveiling the real history behind The Last Kingdom.

Who came to this video as a big fan of the Netflix series? 😄
Fan of the books.
Me!!
Hated that show, they treated their female charcters like a flavor of the week.
@@laurenboyd7094 go cry about it
Me
I'm not into cheesy Viking shows, period pieces, etc..
But man, I binged all 5 seasons of this in 2 weeks. Great show.
Thought it was awful.
I liked first 3 seasons, Alfred and Uthred dynamic was pretty fun, 4th and 5th were mediocre at best, even if Cnut was one of the best characters of the whole show.
Guess they weren't cheesy after all, were they?
Idk if you could call it a “cheesy Viking” show
The source novels for the series were superior material.
I’m REALLY hoping for a full length documentary *series* on this time period. The post-Roman era up through the earliest days of the monarchy, and the divided kingdoms are truly the most fascinating time and place in the world to me
Agree, Saxon Britain is fascinating. One can only imagine the range of languages and dialects, and tribes.
It already exists... just TH-cam 'The Dark Ages, history'.
Hello
Yes, the Anglo-Saxon period and the birth of England are a deeply underappreciated part of history.
@@harry_rambles haha thanks! No I know that lol there’s so great stuff from a few different channels. I was specifically referring to HistoryHit doing a series though lol
I am Northumbrian born & breed! Northumberland has more castle then any other county in the Uk, with over 70 castle sites. We also have Hadrians wall that was built in 122 AD by the Romans. The wall actually inspired the wall in the game of thrones! It is also the most beautiful county in England, but I am slightly biased!!
I'm from North Yorkshire. If I could move to Northumberland I would - North Yorkshire has it's treasures for sure, and I love where I live but Northumberland holds something special to me. The scenery, the history, the people.
As a plus, in a way, it's nice to not live there and to just visit. Would I not be as in love with Northumberland if I lived there, I wonder?
@04williamsl massive fan of Yorkshire. Always found the people friendly & very similar to us in Northumberland (salt of the earth kind!). And without a shadow of a doubt, would you love Northumberland if u lived here!I lived down south for a few years & there was no comparison! Made me appreciate where I come from even more!
I’m Norwegian. I like your castles 🍻
@@aleksandervaldal thank you!
I have so many happy memories of holidays spent in beautiful Northumberland. I used to go there with my dear friend Maurice and my husband Shaun, both, sadly no longer with us. Wonderful times, never forgotten.
I was hooked after the first episode. The actors portray their characters very well and the dialogue is outstanding. The action and battle scenes are spectacular and not over the top. This 5 season production is very entertaining for sure.
I highly recommend the books. They are great. I read all 13.
Then you might be happy to know that they made a long movie now called "Seven kings must die" as well :) Just watched it, and it was amazing!
@@seawolf365Better than the series. How on earth did they think by replacing the tall blonde warrior for a short dark haired German!
Same. I thought brida was a really good actor.
If you have followed the books you wouldn't like them. I know I didn't, and the chaps that made GOT have shown that you can follow the books nearly faithfully and still get a great show. Uhtred was a 6ft Blonde huge Saxon raised by the Danes, not this dark-haired German dwarf.
We stayed in a lovely guest house on Bamburgh village, for a long weekend. The owner took us up to our room and opened the curtains. There, right before us, stood Bamburgh Castle just a short walk away! It was so theatrical that I burst into tears and I don't do tears. It really is a sight to behold.
Why did you cry
Wow. I would of too. The history is fascinating, gives me goosebumps. What a time !
Amazing :D
Thank you, I was so sad when The Last Kingdom was over.
I simply loved the series' what a rollercoaster of emotions... Excellent script, well directed and of course Utred...my hero.... Simply the BEST.
newman? hmm, supicious
Bamburgh is a beautiful place and you feel the history when you’re there but damn if you’re there go to Lindisfarne! I stood there looking out to the North Sea and I imagined being a monk seeing sails on the horizon for the first time, sent shivers down my spine!
It’s me!
I love studying history and love the show The Last Kingdom! Even though I know the show takes quite a bit of dramatic license with the actual history, it's still a great show! Whenever I watch a historical show or movie I always research the actual history, because there's always historical inaccuracies. But, since I'm also working on my family tree, I was thrilled to find that I'm a descendant of the real Uhtred the Bold through his daughter Ealdgyth, he's my 27th great grandfather. Thank you for the tour, I would love to visit Bamburgh someday.
I am also related to Uchtred via his daughter Ealdgyth, then through the Gospatricks to Robert of Dunbar.
Oh man wicked mine oldest we could fin Jaques de Moley last grandmaster of templars I hope its accurate how cool
Wow. How cool is that?!
👍👍👍🙏
Uhrtid of bebbanburg
I read Bernard's books first and loved the TV series too. All the actors did it so much justice and more. I'm looking to visit next year ❤️
Bernard Cornwell is probably by favourite author. So I loved that Netflix series. I had to watch this when I came across my feed!
Bamburgh was my favourite holiday spot. Been there swimming with dolphins. But Lindisfarne on Holy Island across the bay is the most magical place you can find. My local Northumberland friend pronounced it as "Bamba" castle and his family were from the farmhouse on the border.
I have never seen the Netflix series. I was, however, in England in ‘88 and travelled a lot of the country. But Bamburgh impressed me the most. Standing next to the cannons facing the North Sea, you can feel the power and the history. A stunning location well worth checking out. Thanks HH. Much appreciated ❤. Merry Christmas and all the best in the coming year! ❄️☃️👼🏻🌟🎁🧑🏻🎄🎉🥂🍻🍺🎄🦃
The show is addictingly excellent
I visited earlier this year. I'm no history buff so I have to admit - I had no idea how big the castle is!
What I still don't get is why. Sure, it was big and impressive when it needed to be - to repel Viking invaders. But since then? OK, the Normans wanted to impress the locals, so rebuilt it in stone. But who attacked in the 15th century? The Scots? I can't think who else. If it was hit by artillery, who rebuilt it, and why?
The castle is literally across the bay from Lindisfarne. I'd like to know what relevance that had to such a stronghold. Sorry - couldn't give a monkeys about some Netflix show.
@@rogink hi. I have no idea about the history of the castle. Hopefully someone will read your comment and fill us all in. Happy New Year to you!
Omg you will hopefully love it!!!
@@jenniferg3402 I don’t have Netflix 😬
A lot of Bamburgh Castle isn't medieval, ( as in it's been lost) in the In the 17th century, financial difficulties led to the castle deteriorating, but it was restored by various owners during the 18th and 19th centuries. It was finally bought by the Victorian era industrialist William Armstrong, who completed its restoration. The castle still belongs to the Armstrong family and is open to the public.
That's not unusual -probably most of the great castles are heavily restored especially in the Victorian era -Arundel castle is another example and in France -most of the stunning fortifications of Carcassone are 19th century restorations.
I live and deliver here and its always a sight to see !!! so thankful to live in such a beautful place as Northumberland , god's own country and its best kept secret !!!
I’m a 10th generation American but almost all of my family came from England. I can’t wait to go to England and just dive into the history. I’m obsessed with English History.
Hope you get to see your mother land some time.
Its interesting sure - but it's the histories OUTSIDE London and the south that rarely gets attention (such as this) that are fabulously interesting yet bafflingly rarely get attention
Same
the real ameicans were all originally British. Most americans are jewish nowdays i think though. plus compton has some lovely chaps with nice music.
10th generation American means literally nothing, you people are a mix of all nations, no roots, no legacy ..no identity, nothing, thats what it is being American, unless you speak as a Native American, now those are true Americans.
I'm always in awe at the amazing structures they were able to build trough out history. This castle looks absolutely stunning
Yes, with no power tools or heavy equipment. The more you know! 🌟🌟
i generally despise viking shows and how they portray vikings and romanticize them, but i was able to put that aside for the really intriguing story of The Last Kingdom. I rewatch it every now and then and its like a comfort show to me now.
Love it. My respect. Long live Great Britaine. I am from Azerbaijan and fell in love with England after this series.
I hope someday to visit the homelands of Lord Ultred
yuck
@@wendyHew You suck btw 😆🤢🥰
The show was filmed in Hungary.
@@Bob-v6h8t Hungary is a very beautiful country and the people there are very kind. I was in Budapest a long time ago.
I love the show, and the real life version is just as fascinating. Both are great.
I read Bernard Cornwell's Stonehenge 2000BC in high school 5 times. Thought that was the only book he had ever done, none of the libraries in the city could tell me another book he had done. Then I see this guy's name on a Netflix series. I'm slowly working my way through the Last Kingdom book series
And you have all the Sharpe novels to read after that. A lot to look forward to.
If you are American, which I suspect, he has also done a series covering the American Civil War. Following the PoV of someone named Nathaniel Starbuck. The books are Rebel, Copperhead, Battle Flag, The Bloody Ground. He has an extensive back catalogue does old Bernard. Happy reading.
Redcoat was a good read too, set during the American revolutionary war.
Bernard Cornwall has written many books (he has a website), and I think I've read them all, and he has signed some for me.
He does his research, and usually adds a historical note in which he says what is fact, or where he has distorted fact for the sake of the plot. He also tries to use place names accurately, as some have changed over time, although often phonetically relatable.
Not a lot of documents survive from Saxon times, but there are copious records of the Peninsular War, for example.
His books are better than the TV series, but the Netflix series was good, I'll admit.
yes i read it as well n like the stories but just sad they cant really tell who built this ruin of stonehenge until now..my English friend gave me the book i was astonished of writer❤
This castle is amazing as you can see it's grandeur and impressive size as its surrounded by countryside so you can imagine it as it was in this era.
Unlike many castles surrounded by modern buildings and facilities Bamburgh Castle has remained scale inside and outside 🤩
Visited Bamburgh the week before Easter. A really stunning castle. When you approach from the west, the view of it is incredible.
American here; I just started listening to Bernard Cornwell's "Saxon" books. Uhtred is a very interesting character. Thanks for the presentation!
Englishman William Oughtred invented the slide rule (the first true slide rule was circular). The modern version of the name. The real Uhtred may have been an ancestor of his.
We enjoyed traveling the British coast very much. I remember the outstanding beauty of Bamburgh and the beach. Haven’t got Netflix, but love LJ Ross‘ novels.
This show was based on a book by Bernard Cornwell.
The Last Kingdom is brilliant, if you like this channel you will love the show
The costumes and weapons are terrible though.
was brilliant. season 1-3 was brilliant.
@@stickler6014 The whole series was brilliant wym
yeah its good, its like a poor mans vikings with worse fight scenes and less interesting storylines, utred shits himself at one point which is thge level of the comedy
@@wendyHew Calling TLK the "poor man's Vikings" is like calling a Beef Wellington the poor man's Corn Dog. Vikings was an awful show. Goofy fake Scandinavian accents, cartoonishly overacted characters, haphazard plot that strayed in and out of history completely erratically...
I was at Bamburgh Castle a few weeks ago because I live in Durham and love the Cathedral, so I wanted to see Bamburgh due to its connections. Its so stunning, it just looms over you suddenly when you're driving up to it and it's so intimidating and beautiful. I feel so lucky to have it close enough to visit.
I’m from the northeast England and my name is a old Northumbrian name Errington. Great video ..thanks for the interesting but sad history of the area.
We visited the castle when we were in Edinburgh, it was totally worth the trip. It is my most favourite part of our tour!
They had The Last Kingdom props and stuff in the castle, so it was an extra pleasure to visit the castle.
It was an awesome experience to be there!
I visited Bamburgh, and it took my breath away. I wonder what it ould have been like for someone in 900 AD with no knowledge of skyscrapers and other tall buildings and seeing it for the first time. Gorgeous.
The last kingdom is definitely one of my favorite series. So much that I've binge watched it atleast 10 times.
Wow, how fascinating! Every time I see these videos, I think "Someone needs to fly over that site with LIDAR!"...one can just imagine the results!
I live 30 minutes from Bamburgh and even after over 30 years of seeing it the castle still amazes me.
Ive been to Bamburgh castle, wonderful place, gorgeous beach too. Well worth a visit if you havent gone yet.
This is the finest historian I've ever seen. Even better to learn 👀 ❤️
I was born in Northumberland. It is as beautiful as anywhere in the world. Holy island Alnwick, bamburgh, segadunum, vindoolanda, the county has 1500 Years of history under your feet.
Big fan of the TV series. I hope to visit the castle in may 2023, when on holiday with my family near Hartlepool.
I’m sure I read somewhere that the author of the Last Kingdom series was related to Utred the Bold and that is why he decided to write the series of novels. The books are much, much better than the series as is often the case, but I do love the Netflix show as well. I have it on DVD and have watched it through to the end about five times. I’ve read all the books twice! ❤
I was listening last night, the last kingdom soundtracks near Brazilian sea and today youtube recommended me this amazing video with amazing history. I will definitely visit this place once I'm back in UK
Bamburgh is my favourite castle and just a short drive along the road! It dominates the surrounding land. Being the local ancient royal seat and in my opinion, better in many ways than Alnwick Castle. (Of Percy Hotspur fame.) The link with the iconic industrialist and weapon maker for the empire Lord Armstrong, seals the deal for me. It's an incredible place in summer with the best beaches in britain. Even more so in the depths of winter storms. Providing an atmospheric reminder of the regions turbulent past.
Come the zombie apocalypse. I know where I'm heading with a band of intrepid warriors, armed to the teeth.
"Hail the Lady Bebba and Bebbanburg."
I’ve visited several times, staying at a caravan site nearby. It’s quite amazing
I am an indian with no knowledge on these hystory.. I watched both vykings and the last kingdom.. I really loved the last kingdom more than the vykings.. Uhtred of bebbenburg was awesome in the show🔥
I got the bus from Glasgow on a £20 return day trip down to Bamburgh castle last April loved standing on the beach watching and listening to the roaring sea I know they filmed “robin the hooded man” in bamburgh in 1984 which I loved and watched on a Saturday when we left bamburgh we headed north to holy island which was peaceful and very spiritual it was the best £20 spent
its a magnificent castle, the scenery around it is beautiful.
Northumberland is really underrated
2024: I just read all 13 volumes of the Last Kingdom in sequence. A stunning read - I was sorry when it was over. I was impressed that at the end of each volume Cornwell writes several pages placing the story and the characters in the scope of the actual events, freely showing what was fiction and what was fact. He also provides a glossary translating the ancient names of places which he uses into their current form. Eg: Lundene became London in our time.
Brilliant series. Had read all the books prior to the series being made and was always fascinated with this period of English history. So glad to see it replicated properly great job Netflix ❤
He really gets the details! In Bernard Cornwell's Agincourt book every single name including the main character is from the actual records and were all people who were listed as part of that campaign and battle, he really brings his work to life and is a brilliant author.
I just finished the series for the second time; have never seen anything better. Now I'm watching videos like this one (also really good) by History Hit to learn more.
That looks so much like Rochester Castle... you must come to Rochester in Kent.. so much history to see.
Melhor série que já assisti!
On aimerait que la série ne se termine jamais tellement elle est captivante.
My dad and his sister were evacuated to bamburgh castle after their brother died in the bombing of Newcastle upon Tyne and were in the castle until the end of the war from the slums of Newcastle
That is a great show one of my favorites. This is also a really well done video, I find this period one of the most fascinating
I was born near bamburgh.
Fantastic and worth visiting.
Proud northern historian
Great show that doesn’t get the attention it deserves
It certainly did, considering it was BBC, then Amazon Prime... and then Netflix and renewed for a further 3 seasons, for a total of 5.
I enjoyed every episode of The Last Kingdom. I love history. I'm from the USA, but enjoy learning about British history. I love to learn about all history foreign, and domestic.
This is on my bucket list of places to see
We stayed at Bamburgh last year for a week and had a view of the Castle, we had a wander inside and around the grounds, my only disappointment was there wasn't alot of History in there regarding the Viking era, one small room with artefacts was all there was, i thought there would of been a little more.
The grounds and surrounding Dunes are stunning and we were lucky to have a week full of great weather. After watching the Last Kingdom it was a great feeling to actually be there, looking up at this Stunning place. But if you go, make sure to visit the other Castles in the area and of course Lindisfarne.
I love learning about real history from tv
What a stunning location and building
no
TY for all these documentaries 💕💕
Been to Bamburgh Castle and Lindisfarne (which is basically almost in the same place).Amazing atmospheric places which I admire 💯 Great video aswell 👏🏻
Enjoyed this short video , I've been at Bamburgh for the last 2 days , touring the halls of the castle and surrounding area, due to weather I didn't make to the holy island of Lindisfarne, maybe next time. I read the book then watched the series. It's a great story.
The show is fairly inaccurate historically but a fantastic watch if you ignore that. I loved it. I also love videos like this as it really helps set the record straight. Keep up the good work. Much love from Australia.
@ChooRoo. If you read the books you will know that Bernard Cornwall always adds historical notes at the end to explain where his stories diversify from what really happened.
Except uhtred the show is historically accurate
Good video to watch after getting a platinum in Valhalla, man it was such a great game and yet it's so hated, I sometimes kinda wish that AC Valhalla gets the same amount of appreciation what Call of Duty Black Ops 2 but, it's just not the case. However the series "The Last Kingdom" was the best one on Netflix and I was really enjoying watching your video! 👍
Absolutely loved this wonderful series!!! All the actors were so amazing!!!!❤️
3:35 When you mentioned Bebba's Burgh I immediately thought of "Borg" which means Castle or Fortress in swedish. I'm glad that we scandinavians contributed a lot to the forming of modern day Europe. England, France, Slavic countries, Russia. I recommend listening to Dan Carlin's latest podcast series about the vikings called "Twilight of the Aesir".
He may have not have been based off a real person, but the character they made(and the actor) were absolutely amazing. One of the rare TV shows made by BBC in the last 20 years that was actually decent.
I am Uhtred, son of Uhtred.
Assling
I decided to watch this video because of the series its also why I decided to visit Bamburgh Castle
The Author of Bernard Cornwell lite up my interest, of Alfred the Great & Anglo Saxon & Bamburgh Castle to my attention when he penned his 1st novel of the Last Kingdom series .
It lit my interest in English history & since finding I have Anglo Saxon in my DNA .
was at the castle last saturday they have props and costumes from the last kingdom bamburgh is about 40 minutes from where i live
Séries was so fun! Excellent vidéo, thank you ❤❤❤
Never saw the show, I love the books and got them all.
I visited Bamburgh, it is magnificent. I walked on the beach and back up through the shrubby dunes. I also visited Holy Island, and from there you can just about see Bamburgh across the water.
You mentioned 1464, presumably when Warwick, "the Kingmaker" had been sent up north to deal with the Scots and Margaret of Anjou and Henry VI who was trying to regain his throne from Edward IV. The battle of Hexham happened that year as well.
I loved the series The Last Kingdom but haven't finished watching it all yet. Must do so.
This is in no way a quibble, just an observation. The sound level (the whole output level, not between intercuts) is perhaps tad low.. Great little video as ever! 🌟👍
The audio levels are fine, and would have been recorded and edited to meet a certain requirement. Perhaps test your own system.
Even though my ancestry is from Asia i was still glued to this series. I wish film producers can tell stories about our heritage the way the Netflix series depicted. Brilliant show
May I recommend "The Castle Of Bamburgh" on the Northworthy Sagas and Stories channel here on TH-cam. ⚔️
lol that channel sucks, lol all their videos are too short, less than 10 mins long lol I hate short videos, I love 10 hour videos
I got a laugh out of him sitting in the reconstructed thrown that Time Team built there when they did a dig on site.
thank you for all the information, love the series
Its a gorgeous part of northumberland , and the surrounding towns and other castles ,are maybe a bit more unkept other than Alnwick castle ,even thought its only 40 miles away and takes about 48 mins to get there only been there maybe twice, ,we have Beautiful country side ,too
Yesss truly I cried when I realized that the series is finished 😢
I’m really glad to see the views & followers going up. The content is fantastic
When I searched this up after watching the series I did not expect to be welcomed by such a nice video
I can't wait for the movie continuation. I hope they keep with the historical accurate fiction
Watched The Last Kingdom from start to finish during Covid lockdown with my daughter. We couldn't stop watching it. 😊
The Battle of Beomfloote or Benfleet is a Real place and Battle Site too..!
I know because I grew up there..!
And my History teacher would Bang on about it often, given half a Chance..!
But having been to Bamburgh in my youth. Its a Fabulous windswept site, well worth a Visit..!!
Cheers All. Kim in Oz.😎
This is my next vacation destination
You'll love it. Very close to Lindisfarne as well so you can see both in the same day, both iconic historical locations.
I live in south africa and viewed the Netflix series and wen I saw the real thing it was Amazing its come a long way from the wooden structure
Craziest thing is when you realise how situated it really is to deal with viking raids… like if you’re on Lindisfarne where the vikings first landed you can literally see the fortress across the coast with the naked eye. Not to mention the show using a set rather than the actual location, it’s insane how well the set designers nailed it. My friend and I went just cause it looked scenic (I’m a photographer who’s a history buff) and I was walking around thinking, “something about this place feels familiar” and then I’m like, “Bamburgh… Bebbanburg… wait… is this where it’s based on?” and sure enough. Doesn’t even use the same location, just they nailed the terrain and look so much that it actually captures the familiarity of the actual place.
Came here after got my ❤ hooked to "The LAST KINGDOM" series.
I am a big fan of the series!
The Last kingdom series was Awesome and I wish they would make more !!!!!!!!!
The book The last kingdoms which the series was based off of was based off the author's ancestor
Was just watching this series last night
The series was amazing! And I just watched the new movie. Loved your video.
Smashed it 👍🏼 … another great video from HH
Bebbanburg wasn't a new castle site though. It was formerly a castle of the Britons called Din Guaire. It may have been part of the Gododdin lands. It was conquered by Ida of Bernicia who added it to his kingdom. That he made it his capital would suggest Din Guaire was previously an important site, perhaps the capital of the Britons of Bernicia.
Prior to Bernicia during Roman times were the Votadini (LONG before the Saxons) the tribe who stretched down east coast from Edinburgh to the Tyne - then it was the Brigantes from Tyne downward !
No-one can write a battle scene like Cornwell does
I enjoy all of History Hit videos
