Thank you, Paul. There is no substitute for data gathered under real-world conditions. When such data isn't practical or moral (it's not ethical to dose your friends with meth, get them excited and then shoot them at various ranges before cutting them apart to see what the bullets did) simulations approximating reality are as good as it gets. Terminal ballistics testing has to be conducted with simulations--whether water jugs or something deemed more "scientific." Test media isn't free and there's the time to set up the test and then interpret the results. Your testing is a public service. Thank you.

Just imagine the fact that for every single one of Paul's videos. It takes the government multiple years to review an implement the data that he puts out.
But physicists have always argued whether kinetic energy or momentum is the true measure of the energy of motion; momentum is linear in both mass and velocity.
@@10splitter No, not really. Kinetic energy is, by definition, energy of motion. You're referring to force being change of momentum over time? True, but that's not the kinetic energy.
Paul, this kind of video is incredibly useful. I used to do a lot of this testing in the pre-TH-cam days, and I know how much work in involved in just doing the shooting, not to mention the video production. Thank you for putting forth the effort. In this time where there are more AR-15 owners and fewer and fewer places to shoot a rifle at any distance, especially on the East Coast, you are providing a real service to those of us who want to know what actually happens at longer ranges than we can typical shoot at on our local venues.
Any video with solid views will have some dislikes. Reasons could vary from someone at the bottom of the bottle hit the wrong button to haters from similair content creators. It doesnt do much with ratios like this though.
We could definitely hear it. Maybe us fans could patreon-fund him one of those hand held anemometers or some other amateur weather station that he could set up on-site.
My 3 year old is in the room while im watching this. when paul switched to the meat target, after every shot, my son starts calling out velocities. *pop* "twenty six twenty two" *pop* "twenty six twenty /nine/" he even had pauls inflection on some of the numbers as if he's surprised by the number. this boy is going places.
Excellent presentation multiplied by outstanding marksmanship! (I remember the days I would have not embarrassed myself shooting open sights at 200 yards and more. At 70+, what target? 😉) Thanks for taking the time to eliminate the conjecture.
Great info as always. The 77 gr Rem ammo was impressive, especially in the 20' barrel. Those holes in the rear ribs were something. Guess i will have to try some in my 16" and/or my bolt action. I bet they would be great on coyotes. So would the Federal 50 gr. Great call on showing the velocity diff with 38 Spl and 38 Super. Exact right loads to choose. Was just shooting that 38 Spl the other day- common practice ammo for me. Far as i know, it is the old USAF service load, rated at 800 fps from a 4" barrel.
Once again the meat target demonstrates things other TH-cam video "experts" would merely profusely pontificate about with their hot wind! Absolutely love the setup out in the middle of a windy nowhere being used to show "real life" scenarios too. Great work and thanks for showing us "The Way"
What a fantastic backdrop. I was a bit surprised by the loss of velocity not seeming to correspond to the weight. I would of expected the fastest projectiles in the 20" to have lost the most velocity. I guess you never can tell, which is why videos like these are so good. Nice job Paul.
Paul makes it look so easy, I find myself forgetting that he's consistently hitting a porkchop 200yards away with iron sights in a strong breeze. I think I'd be struggling to see the pork chop past my A2 front sight post - lord knows I was having enough trouble with the zeroing target the other day, just from getting a little finger smudge on my glasses.
That was fun. LOVE those "meat targets". Nice local, for not being on the range, and may I say, nice shooting on a 'slightly' windy day. I beginning to think of the famous shooting jacket as more of a TARDIS Coat.
Can't wait to watch when I get back home. What would it take to see some tests of .223 frangible ammunition vs meat target, car door, dry wall, accuracy etc? I'm very interested to see this comparison.
Me Harrel, this was a fantastic bit of information. How totally ironic that as I was shooting my 10.5” SBR this afternoon I was just thinking how great it would be for you to make this very video. Imagine my surprise when I returned home! You know what they say about great minds eh? Lol. I wouldn’t presume to include my level of knowledge with yours even in the same sentence. Take care.
I would enjoy seeing a comparison of 6.5 Grendel in the AR platform, different barrel lengths, as many are considering the 6.5 Grendel to be "the optimal AR cartridge" for several reasons. I understand one of the reasons is that it burns more powder very quickly, giving it a muzzle velocity far from a "standard 16 inch" AR barrel, VS longer right barrels.
Hay, great job with the Russian Federation debt reduction, making needed changes in the constitution, stabilizing Syria, Venezuela, and Ukraine. Oh, and opposing Hillary Clinton and her stupid perverse monstrous policies from 2008 on. You go Vlad!
Looks like eastern Oregon (since I know Paul lives in the Salem, OR area). The terrain in eastern Washington is a little more hilly between the big rock outcrops. I live in southern Idaho, similar terrain to eastern Oregon.
That is TH-cam in general, not just Paul's videos. Sound equalization on videos would be great but TH-cam doesn't care enough to fix their issues. A wind blocking mechanical item would help, reduce wind noise, but software solution would distort the report of the firearms and I would recommend passing that up if possible.
@@Dang_Near_Fed_Up TH-cam already does loudness equalization, which means that every video above 14 LUFS gets turned down to that level. This is a lossless process and doesn't change the sound quality, it just equalizes for perceived loudness. However they can't and shouldn't do any more than that because it would mess with well recorded and mastered videos. There are millions of professional music videos and other well mastered videos on the platform that would suffer massively from any kind of auto-equalization or compression, they simply cannot do that. I watch a lot of videos with more amateurish sound recording/mastering, too, so I usually use Equalizer APO in combination with Windows' built-in Loudness Equalization on the shortest setting. It is basically an auto-gain, auto-compressor/limiter. This is a rather aggressive setting that fixes most problems in amateur sound recording/mixing, but I wouldn't want to listen to music with this, it sounds horrible on professional recordings.
What I'm trying to say is: TH-cam as a platform cannot do anything about bad sound recording/mixing/mastering. It's just up to the creators to get some good sound in their videos. It's not rocket science, everyone can learn enough about it to make at least a half-decent sound track. Unfortunately most people don't realize that bad sound is way more distracting and annoying than some shaky footage or a lower resolution picture.
My succinct takeaway is to say that the longer barrel _enhances_ performance-- the short barrel does the job, but long barrel gives you the luxury of excess.
I just don’t feel comfortable with a 5.56/223 firearm with less than a 14” barrel. For a shorter barrel, I prefer 300BLK with supersonic ammo. But that’s just me.
Hey Paul. I’ve noticed some of your shooting targets. The one with the metal targets that you pull the rope an make them stand back up. Do you have or can you make a video. A little how to build home targets?
It's two sides of the same coin. Do you want easily repeatable results and more consistent results (gel)? Or do you want a less consistent, but probably more representative target (meat target)? Ideally, scientifically, you'd shoot 1000 rounds into both before you made any statement about the ballistics, but who has that kinda time or money to do it actually scientifically? Both are serious approximations and everyone should realize that.
15:38- 15:42, for cool ricochet. As always, thank you. Mr. Harrell. And remember, you have one of the best channels on TH-cam. And its fast becoming one of my favorites.
Great video! I’ve always wondered how well my 10.5” AR15 would perform. It looks like the 55gn bullet works well with the shorty. I normally shoot 50-60gn Vmax ammunition out of the 10.5” and I get awesome accuracy. Thank you!
The Third Pin Sierra Match King. Yes the MK 262 uses an open tip match bullet and is the one I was referring to. We didn’t use it exclusively but almost.
Was hoping you would do this comparison soon. As always you're range tests are methodical and thorough. Accuracy counts but so does performance on target. Gracias

Go for something that will end the confrontation.
Great content and outstanding presentation as always. With the shortage of 223/556 ammo, I believe that the .308 Win ammo would be a good alternative. Curious how an AR-10 SBR would compare to the 20 inch AR-15. To make it really interesting how about a PTR 51P PWD compared to long barrel AR-15. There’s only person that can do that comparison and we all know who that is!
As I'm sure Paul would agree, there are always caveats... One here, is that all the velocities were chronographed at the same relatively short distance, not truly muzzle velocity, but close enough. As expected, velocities were lower from the 10.5" barrel, but most of us would choose that short barrel for CQB, not because of best performance, but for compactness and manuverability. At 200 yards, the 20" barrel velocity will be close to Paul's 10.5" barrel velocities at the shorter range. If you are satisfied with your 20" barrel's velocities at 200 yds, then you should probably be satisfied with your 10.5" at
This is the correct comment. A 10.5" rifle isn't *intended* to reach out to 200 although it can. The way that a 20" barrel isn't ideal for room clearing, but it can. My martial arts instructor used to always talk about distance and he would say "you don't use a hand grenade in a phone booth." 10.5" for the Urban Boogaloo 16-20" across the sandy plains of Durka-Durkistan
The best thing about the 20" is its up close performance though. You get the full potential of the 5.56 round after all. Yeah the 10.5" is satisfactory up close, but out of a 20" barrel you're getting 40% more muzzle energy. I'll take 1300 ft lbs every day over 900-950 even at bad breath distance.
@@asdfghjk2933 Everything involves tradeoffs. All other things being equal, I'll take the greater energy every time, but all things are rarely equal. Sometimes the loss of energy is a reasonable sacrifice to gain the ability to maneuver the weapon more quickly in a confined space.
Another job well done. Mr. Harrell is a source I point inexperienced gun owners to who want to have a better understanding of firearms. Your straight forward methods not only give visual comparisons or actual results. This keep people from taking uncle bubba's word for it.

Hey Paul, I've watched a lot of your videos over the past few years. I want to thank you for the time you've put into providing thorough testing.
Everybody's Gangsta until the 20 inches AR appears
Notice Mr. Harrell does not shoot it while the AR is laying on its side.
Best TH-camr regarding firearms! Thank you for the great content Paul.
Thank you.
Yeah, but it would be funny to tell them u were gonna shoot them and see which one ran the fastest in a zigzag pattern, while firing blanks in a safe direction

Just imagine the fact that for every single one of Paul's videos. It takes the government multiple years to review an implement the data that he puts out.

Still hankering for "The Meat Target" T-Shirt. Thanks for all your work on these videos.

@Daniel W See, THAT would be a good shirt. And on the back "You be the judge"
It's almost like kinetic energy goes with the square of the velocity or something.
KE = (1/2)m(v^2)
Lol good one!!
Artie Fischel Make Math Great Again !
The most impressive part of this video is that you managed to get good quality audio in this field, kudos to your equipment. Great video!
Absolutely the best firearms TH-camr out there. There is no comparison. Just information, no bravado whatsoever
The fact that Paul’s pants blend with the foreground and his jacket blend with the farground is just.....AMERICAN AMAZING ! 🦅🇺🇸

He could choose 357 m. Vs 38 spl.. But even that comparison have some advantages
Once again the meat target demonstrates things other TH-cam video "experts" would merely profusely pontificate about with their hot wind!
Absolutely love the setup out in the middle of a windy nowhere being used to show "real life" scenarios too.
Great work and thanks for showing us "The Way"
Thank you Mr Harrell n crew! I haven't had time or ambition to test this myself. Great vid! Very informative and thorough!
What a fantastic backdrop. I was a bit surprised by the loss of velocity not seeming to correspond to the weight. I would of expected the fastest projectiles in the 20" to have lost the most velocity.
I guess you never can tell, which is why videos like these are so good.
Nice job Paul.
I love Paul's videos
So simple, but so informative, and honestly gives a unique perspective that is interesting.
Some people watch Bob Ross to chill, others watch Paul.
I come to read the comments and watch the video 😂
Paul makes it look so easy, I find myself forgetting that he's consistently hitting a porkchop 200yards away with iron sights in a strong breeze. I think I'd be struggling to see the pork chop past my A2 front sight post - lord knows I was having enough trouble with the zeroing target the other day, just from getting a little finger smudge on my glasses.
Paul, your videos are always educational. Shooting is a lot of fun, even more so when you understand the how and the why. Keep up the great work.
Paul Harrell = The scientific method played out in a real world setting. Really appreciated!
That was fun. LOVE those "meat targets".
Nice local, for not being on the range, and may I say, nice shooting on a 'slightly' windy day.
I beginning to think of the famous shooting jacket as more of a TARDIS Coat.
I respect the fact he has enough discipline and muzzle awareness, he doesn’t even flag the camera.
Can't wait to watch when I get back home. What would it take to see some tests of .223 frangible ammunition vs meat target, car door, dry wall, accuracy etc? I'm very interested to see this comparison.
I've also always wondered about frangibles too and how soft a target can be to get maximum......... Frangibility

I concur! An episode of anecdotes and humorous bloopers would be awesome! The other side of Paul... I can’t wait,

Someone please get Paul some sort of foam windbreaker for his mic
U mean like the windbreakers the FBI wears? He could have Paul Harrel printed on them😅
That is TH-cam in general, not just Paul's videos.
That’s what she said
There's no success like excess!
But remember the long barrels came first, short barrels are used modernly due to the increase in urban warfare environments(among other things)
@MrCevant ars aren't 1moa guns, you're not gonna hit much at 400

@@Tadicuslegion78 @14:50. Y'all welcome.

If you are satisfied with your 20" barrel's velocities at 200 yds, then you should probably be satisfied with your 10.5" at
Like almost everything involving weapons, context is important.
This is the correct comment.
A 10.5" rifle isn't *intended* to reach out to 200 although it can. The way that a 20" barrel isn't ideal for room clearing, but it can.
My martial arts instructor used to always talk about distance and he would say "you don't use a hand grenade in a phone booth."
10.5" for the Urban Boogaloo
16-20" across the sandy plains of Durka-Durkistan

Honestly don't know why those older cartridges ran such long barrels. Pretty sure there was a velocity loss after a certain length much shorter than the actual length. Sight radius accuracy?
@@exothermal.sprocket one reason was black powder. That stuff will keep making velocity with a 40 inch barrel.
