Wow, I am astounded. I would have bet totally against the findings of the experiment. I would have bet the shorter barrel would not be in the ball park. As they say “Live and learn.” Once again Paul is the teacher!!! Great job Sir !!!!’
Thanks Paul - your videos are a huge repository of information. May all your endeavors live on and be watched by all future generations. Legend before, now, forever.
Now, that would be an interesting comparison. If the ammo used in the 20" barrel today's demonstration does X amount of damage, what ammo do you have to use in the 10" to achieve the same results?
Hornady specifically makes a SBR 75 Gr soft point that uses a powder optimized for the 10.5 to 11.5 BBL to more fully burn and also reduce muzzle flash. I would be very curious to see how that performs in tests.
@Matthew Lu I'll tend to agree with you, and for my nearly weekly coyote hunting ( a necessity with livestock) I have basically discontinued the use of FMJ and use various HP/match and soft points for effective hits. I am tired and want to go to bed as soon as possible and I am not hunting for fun or sport. I just want them down and not go tracking a wounded animal for ethics sake. I like the concept of a 10.5 for fast on target and minimal weight and tree branches hanging me up but would like to know just how well the specialized lower velocity SBR ammo works with the soft points before I pour all the money into all of that. I need to work smarter, not harder. 200 yards is about the limit of my abilities under the normal night conditions with 300 under the very rare, perfect conditions. > twice in 17 years.
As I recall, theres a significantly greater amount of damage when the bullet impacts target above 2900 - 3000 fps because you get a LOT more hydrostatic shock. Anyone whose hunted with higher velocity rounds can probably attest to loss of meat because it's been turned into jelly/mush. Just adding this because the 20" barrel is probably delivering the bullet at greater than 2900 - 3000 fps to the target.
Always had a 16 in. AR but just ordered a 20 in. upper. And immediately search for Paul to see if he had tested barrel lengths. As usual, was not disappointed. You are the best Paul. God's blessings on you good man.
You're such a badass man, even though I know you'd never admit that. I've learned so much from your channel, thanks for sharing all of your great knowledge and experience with us!
I did not expect the accuracy of the 10.5 inch barrel to be as good as the 20inch. Very informative. The damage part is the main significant difference that mostly mattered as well. Great job Paul 👍🏻
Hi Paul, I have done this test several times using a 10.5", 16", 18" and a 20". I have an old fixed 25X Leupold target scope on a MI QD mount that I use just for testing rifles. I have found that the 10.5" gives up nothing to the 20" as far as group size but you do start to see the bullet dropping sooner as the range gets longer. I think the shorter barrel as much stiffer and stays put better resulting in nice tight groups. Loved the video and please keep them cameras rolling!
Paul’s mannerisms and how he speaks makes me feel like I’m watching Alton Brown in Good Eats. And I love this channel for the same reasons I love Good Eats. Keep it up Paul!
@@chadhaire1711 Stabilization of the round. Shorter distance (not shot here) the shorter barrel "is supposed to" stabilize the bullet at a shorter distance whereas the longer barrel is "expected" to stabilize at a longer distance. I have not researched it heavily. think of it as the read of the bullet is wobbling for "some distance" after it leaves the barrel. My take aways of this is that the AR15 short or long will deliver. Now you as the shooter must train to be accurate.
That's why I dont understand this "Hi-points suck" or "this trigger is horrible" people. Nothing wrong with a Hipoint or a crappy trigger as long as it goes bang everytime you pull the trigger, and that's what you practice with. Friend of mine is a very good shot with his Hipoints, because that's all he can afford, and all he practices with.
@@AnAZPatriot Finally got my brothers to each build their own AR. They don't want anything fancy, understandably so, with their first rifles. I tell them the same thing, if it goes bang every time you pull the trigger, and hits the intended target, that's what matters.
Whenever I hear vets from the special forces community talk about this, they always say the barrel length doesnt matter so much for accuracy but for how many rounds you need to neutralize a threat at various ranges in places like the mountains of Afghanistan. I think this test shows all barrel lengths are suitable for home defense.
@@makepeacewithyourmaker324 did…. Did you even watch Paul’s video on the subject? .223 and 5.56 will go through 2 interior walls plus an exterior wall with ease.
It does, and I was surprised. still would be better to have a longer barrel if you want to go get medieval on deer or something for better shot placement at range
While in the prone your breathing reminded me that a breathing tutorial could also shed light on accuracy. Exhaled shot, inhaled shot and breathing shots. Something that was job one when I taught my kids.
I dont even know what an inhale shot, exhale shot, or a breathing shot even means. Mine was a couple of deep slow breaths in and out. And on the shooting breath, deep breath, then only let half of it out and hold. Nothing left but your heartbeat to deal with after that. It looks like Paul's is a variant of that, just instead of half breath out, takes the full breath and holds.
You can see, as evidenced by the additional smoke, when the 16" and 10" bbl rifles are fired. In comparison to the 20" bbl. That successively more unused pressurized gasses are escaping through muzzle. As well as, through the breach and gas tube, via the ejection port. However, the loss of velocity, and lesser accuracy performance at distance, are really a moot point. Given that the intended use of an extremely short bbl rifle is generally at near point blank range. During CQB applications, where combatants may be wearing body armor, as an example. Simply put, different rifles for different jobs.
*K Y* I agree ("different weapons for different jobs"), but I'll have to say the 10.5" barrel on that AR pistol did _way_ better than I expected against that 20" barrel. Feels like unless you are expecting to do most of your shooting out past a football field in length, the 10.5" barrel is a pretty good bet. I wouldn't have thought so prior to watching this video. 🤷♂️
The issue with this though is that if your AR is chambered in 5.56, it needs to go a certain velocity to cause an ideal wounding effect. I think its above 2600 feet per second? Once you cut your AR-15 barrel below 14" this effect gets lost due to not having enough time to speed up. Cannot remember his name but another youtuber went through Thunder Ranch and built an AR for that course. He was the one who explained how barrel length on an AR-15 can effect lethality.
With a loss of velocity down to an average of 2790 FPS from a 10” barrel, that 5.56 round is still moving fast enough... to at least 50 meters. Shot placement always overcomes ballistic limitations. Of course one thing I didn’t hear Paul mention in this video is that when you shorten the barrel on the AR, the noise level to the shooter and those around him increases significantly. ✌🏽
For quite a while, I have been wondering about what kind of difference barrel length would have on terminal velocity, and accuracy. This was very interesting. Thank you for all your time and effort.
@@PaulHarrell Greetings. Paul I was wondering, if you had the opportunity to shoot the 10.5 inch barrel in low light conditions? if so, did it have a sufficient muzzle flash? Also, any testing with the other barrel lengths in low light conditions. Thanks.
@@JamesSmith-gn9ou 10.5 will produce extreme muzzle flash. Which is why most people, including myself, run a suppressor to prevent flash on pretty much anything below 16", but that's just on my home defense rifle or Hog hunting with NV! If it doesn't bother you, then that is all fine :)
@@PaulHarrell I also have two AR-15s. The first one I bought was a 16". (Colt). The second one was a "boot leg" version with a Panther DPMS 20" barrel. The 20" one drops about 1/3 less at 300 yds than the 16." BOTH are 7.62×39 SOVIET. The difference in drop between the 16" and the 20" at 300 yds is quite noticeable. 🤔
That makes sense because from ballistics gel research 5.56 only fragments properly when traveling above 2,500 fps. Really cool to see the difference in the tests!
I worry about the bullet slowing on impact too much to not fragment once it's inside the body. I want that bad boy to practically explode even after punching through a bit
For OIF 3, we were given M16A2's. Some of us purchased unauthorized M4 uppers...I ended up with a 10.5 inch barrel. With an optic, it was pretty dang accurate for what I needed (nothin' over 100 meters.) This was a great show of accuracy
This same test would be interesting with 9mm. I am talking about 7", 10", and 16" barrels. I don't know of any 20 " 9mm barrels. Keep up the good work. I find myself constantly refrencing your videos on many topics because the are so well thought out and executed. thanks
ballistics by the inch is a great website that shows effects of barrel length on many common calibers. Here is a link to the chart for 9mm. There are diminishing returns past about 8". See how the muzzle energy is almost flat and you gain very little going all the way from 8" to 16". www.ballisticsbytheinch.com/megraphs/9mm.html
@@Plur307 That it. There is no reason for a 20 inch 9mm barrel when the round is out of gas before 16 inches. The sweet spot seems to be between 7 and 10 inches which is the barrel length range for most submachineguns. That isn't a coincidence. If you're going to suppress it, then shorter like 4-5 inches might be better to avoid the hypersonic crack.
pistol cartridges are designed to burn their charge very early (for obvious reasons). They aren't going to put more charge than is needed for a pistol, so you aren't going to be getting any significant thrust past a certain point. As a matter of fact, due to friction between the round and barrel, at some point, the pressure isn't enough to beat the friction and you get velocity LOSSES with bigger barrel. Not sure of the numbers, but I bet around 16" is where any more barrel is not justifiable.
What a well done video. You certainly put a lot of time, effort, and passion into what you do and certainly deliver. Thanks for sharing to help my buddy out to determine what barrel length he wants.
Keep up the great content, Paul. I'd love to see the comparison of .308 out of a 16", 18", 20" and a 24" regarding accuracy and power down range against the meat targets.

My Dad, since I was ~6 years old always told me that while “squeezing the trigger”, the gun should surprise you when it fires. Not exactly modern firearms training, but Dad was a B-52 pilot with 20/15 vision. And this was ~1963-64. He had a stock .22LR Marlin. Not exactly a target rifle. We used to hunt jack rabbits in the desert outside of Roswell, New Mexico riding in his rebuilt Model A with the windshield down. He had permission to hunt on the same ranch as the 1947 UFO incident. That he never heard of until 20 years later. He and his Navigator had .22s. I had, honest to a God, my trusty Daisy Red Ryder BB Gun. Complete with Medallion. As a kid it seemed like he couldn’t miss. And he seldom missed. I still think I winged a few of those fast jackrabbits with the Red Ryder. Some of the very early standard 8mm family film is of my Dad showing me and a friend how to shoot a .22. I won’t mention the debacle after we begged and pouted for him to let us shoot the Model 1897 12 gauge from a Sitting position. I won the coin toss. My friend declined his turn to shoot. I’ve shot 10s of thousands of rounds of skeet. ~5 years with an off the shelf 1100. Then an Retired Army armorer sold me a used Beretta 680 with tube inserts for all gauges. Custom chokes he picked out himself. I loved it. And still do. Even today, with #9 skeet loads that Model 1897 (full choke) 50” (exaggerating) barrel kicks like a mule. Does anyone know why it kicks so bad? Those were the days. I tried to give my Sons similar experiences, but most kids today have never fired a gun. Except for on-line video games. It’s not the same thing.
My big complaint with short 5.56 guns is the noise. The cartridge is just so damn loud out of anything less than the 14.5 inch guns. Some people dont like that the 55gr fmj rounds are so close to the mythical "2700 fps" fragmentation threshold of the m193 load. Simple solution though, just use an expanding round

Really nice video - pictures speak louder than words! Like youn said - a difference, but a small difference with the lounger barrel. Thanks - much appreciated!
This is a great demonstration video. I already had a 16” Ruger AR-556 and a 20” M16A4 clone, but I just added a 10.3” MK18 to my collection. I was a little worried about the differences and effectiveness, although my research (and this video) pointed me toward positive notions that it isn’t a terrible difference between them. Now I’m going plinking with all three of them!
Hi Paul, great job as always. You give a well rounded and complete testing off each variant and the results. Your content is very detailed and considers many aspects of true and overall performance values. I have always appreciated your content. Thank you for the great efforts and material. Can’t wait to hear Paul’s take on the 10.5” AR as he is somewhat of a traditionalist
He is what we can call, an expert. :)
The XM177E1 had an 11.5" I think
YOU BE THE JUDGE
halo7oo well yeah but all the ARs that he shoots on a regular basis have standard hand guards, iron sights and usually a 20 inch barrel
Reno May sup Reno!?! Didn’t look like it was enough difference... to make a difference.
Now that Paul has a short AR, it would be interesting to see how the different 5.56 bullet weights perform in the meat target.
62-75 grain soft points would rek that meat target
Now, that would be an interesting comparison. If the ammo used in the 20" barrel today's demonstration does X amount of damage, what ammo do you have to use in the 10" to achieve the same results?
Type of bullet makes bigger difference then weight.

That's true, but there is still enough as long as the bullet is over like 2200 fps.
Hydrostatic shock isn't real unless you hit them in the liver

Hi Paul, I have done this test several times using a 10.5", 16", 18" and a 20". I have an old fixed 25X Leupold target scope on a MI QD mount that I use just for testing rifles. I have found that the 10.5" gives up nothing to the 20" as far as group size but you do start to see the bullet dropping sooner as the range gets longer. I think the shorter barrel as much stiffer and stays put better resulting in nice tight groups. Loved the video and please keep them cameras rolling!

@No Nope If you want to avoid the tax stamp man. Have a 5.5 inch flash suppressor permanently affixed to it.
I'd love a video on marksmanship from Paul. I've watched a lot of gun videos and I don't think I've seen anyone shoot better offhand.

Gonna miss you brother.... these younger tubers can't hold a match to you....
I'd liked to have seen difference between these barrels on a meat target at 200-300 yards. Great video!

ballistics by the inch is a great website that shows effects of barrel length on many common calibers.
