    They intentionally sound off time because of the odd time signatures of their music. Thats the jazz influence of Steve Flynn and Rand Burkey. Both friends of mine. I was at Kelly Schaeffers house the day that the Unquestionable Presence album was released. Bradenton Fla!

    These guys pretty much invented technical death Metal.. and Roger Patterson was one of the first death metal bass players to play with the jazzy/death metal type style.. hands down.. this band is amazing.. and that crowd is like wtf, lol.. they re just standing there not knowing what to do because they're so good you just wanna watch them play.. and Kelly's voice sounds kinda like Chad grey from hell yeah and mudvayne.. lol.. still killer tho.. I love atheist..

    I think that death metal and tech metal nowadays is much better. Atheist is one of the few bands that stand the test of time. This, and their music from the late 80s-early 90s is amazing. RIP Roger Patterson. Sean Flynn is a beast on drums. I'm proud to say that we share the same hometown of Sarasota, FL

    • @hazardeur
      @hazardeur 7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      much better? dude, today, a lot of bands just sound the same, same concepts, same presets, same copied ideas. there was way more variety back in the day. i wish i'd still be there

      @@hazardeurI disagree. There is plenty of variety today, but with a much higher level of playing. Faster, more technical, better production. Get with the times, my friend.

    • @hazardeur
      @hazardeur 7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@jamesmiller6217 more technical? i have yet to see a band that impresses me more than the technicality of spiral architect, the perfect and tasteful blend of fusion and metal of Cynic, the raw power and fast brutality of stuff like in their darkened shrines or The sound of perseverance, better soli than dreaming neon black and better leads than politics of ecstasy, etc. etc. and on top of that, all these bands could/can write awesome songs, they invested as much in songwriting skill as in technical skill. the only thing that changed with todays bands is that they play a bit faster. today, more people can play this ridiculous stuff, fair enough. but most of them either cover existing stuff or play in bands nobody wioll know in 20 years. if anything. and btw, i only compare live to live playing. everybody can shine in the studio, especially when the stuio is your bedroom with unlimited time.
      even the production.....better? nah. there are more bands today with decent productions, yes. techn helps them to avoid real shitty productions. but on the other hand, many productions today sound sameish. back in the 90s, every prdocution sounded completely different from one another. not always for the better but personally, i rather have diversity and accept some stinkers.
      there really are a handful of modern bands that really push the envelope in a unique way. saying stupid stuff like bands are better, faster and more technical nowadays just shows a complete lack of understanding. you could argue that in average that statement could be true but even then....you also need to write good songs, first and foremost and if you add that factor, all of a sudden, the list gets very thin very quick

    • @jamesmiller6217
      @jamesmiller6217 7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@hazardeur We just have different tastes in music. I listen to different bands than you do. I have followed tech death since 1989, and I stand by my comment I made 9 years ago. Bands are better now than they were in the 1990s. Not even close.

    • @hazardeur
      @hazardeur 7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@jamesmiller6217 in general? now way. bands these days can't even record a song without hacking it up every few bars. there are some crazy good bands today like AAL but those are few and far between and not the norm. and even then, i listened to planet x and on the virg 25 years ago and they were just as good.

    actually thumbs up, i respect your opinion, haha. here's what i like in the bass jam, maybe not so much as what I like but what i find objectively good: the fact that he did a spinal tap jazz solo at a metal show, the tapping, essentially his performing, but when the drums come in the groove is fresh, but the jam itself wasn't the best, i admit, i think it's more of the mythical aspect of his solo in the middle of a metal show

    and every person of any religion or that has no religion will always have doubt in anything he does, like say an athiest will question his perception (notice how i say perception rather than belief) of reality and a chrisitan will always wonder subconsciously if he is correct in believing in his god; so i think everyone to an extent will always be "agnostic".

    @DangerSheep yeah well, I respect the fact that they most likely never were a live band (like SLAYER is for example). They are more what one can call "MUSICIANS" and really damn good ones! Nevertheless, although they are Jazz musicians, they are actually playing "jazzy death metal". In such a genre, your fans expect more from you, livewise... I guess it's because I am more into the death metal philosophy rather than the clear jazz way of thinking... Look at Chuck and Death for example ;)
