    Love the exploration and love the way you call yourself the bald explorer, how you embrace your situation, your baldness

    I never noticed that it was normal for churches to be on top of hills. Now you've mentioned it, for every church I've seen and remember, it does actually seem to be the case.

      It was a sensible thing to do for many reasons - first so that they could be spotted from miles away as landmarks and second so they do not flood.

      @@RichardVobes That makes sense. I'm originally from Ryde on the Isle of Wight and have always noticed St Thomas' Church in the distance from a lot of places and I always see it from Southsea, where I live now.

    A few years ago just North of Glynde the fields used to be full of alpacas and llamas, made a change from sheep!

      Oh right. That does make a change indeed.

    Just discovered your channel Richard, walking from Glynde up to Mount Caburn and then over to Southerham and back is one of my favourite walks! Keep up the great work :)

    The river is "Glynde Reach" which had a wharf or 2 for the transportation of chalk and clay from the various pits and quarries

      Oh is it - I asked a local too! Yes, that all makes sense - lots of chalk and clay quarries in the area - thanks for the info. Much appreciated.

    I assume that a number of homes in the village are still owned by the estate, due to the uniform colours of the street doors and, indeed the windows,

    Ive been looking forward to this walk, what a beautiful area, every house seems to be picture postcard, not one looks out of place and what an unusual looking church, Palladian style. Was you not able to film in the church at the time Richard, you got a few lovely looking pictures.

      Thanks Mark. I have been waiting for good weather to go there. I thought the door was locked when I first went to go in and then after I had packed the video camera away and taking stills I realised it was open after all.

    Wonderful downland architecture with the flint facing and clay tiles. Interestingly, there wouldn’t have been slate before the railways in this area as there’s no local slate...
    Doesn’t it make a difference when the sun shines?

    • @RichardVobes
      @RichardVobes  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes - that's true. Although it could have come up the river. Oh I love it when the sun shines.

      Richard Vobes - good point - I forgot how navigable the Ouse used to be!

    I have driven through Glynde many times and noticed that the front doors on many of the houses are painted the same shade of blue. Do they belong to an estate I wonder
