- Rye in East Sussex is a beautiful medieval town on the south coast of England but is it the MOST Beautiful town in the UK? We went to find out!
Join us as we indulge in coffee & cake by the quayside before heading off through the medieval maze of cobbled streets to the iconic Mermaid Street, often named the most beautiful street in England before we take on the challenge of climbing the tower at St Mary's Church for some incredible views across the town and beyond.
Then, why settle for one tower when you can climb two? So we head in to explore the Ypres Tower which is all that remains of Rye Castle before heading back down Mermaid Street to The Old Grain Store for some lunch.
Not done with this beautiful part of Sussex yet, we make the short drive to Rye Harbour Village for a walk through the nature reserve and a spot of birdwatching from the cafe.
Recorded March 2023 at:
- Rye, East Sussex

Who & what is JJ Extra?
We’re Josh & Jason, a British couple with a passion for everything travel & food (and lots of coffee). Whether at home in the UK or on our international travels we seek out everything from hidden gems to bucket list destinations, trying new foods and unique drinks wherever we go.
After meeting in early 2019 with dreams of travelling the World together we were all plunged in to the chaos of a global pandemic. Now, as we move in to the future we are making up for lost time and ensuring every day turns in to an adventure, fuelled by our love of food and an unhealthy (but enjoyable) addiction to coffee.
Over the last 2 years we have explored our beautiful home country like never before and in 2022 we were lucky enough to start travelling abroad once more and our dream to travel the world together has been reignited.
We love an adventure and in 2023 we are challenging ourselves to step out of our comfort zones & push ourselves to the limit as we take on bigger adventures than ever before, visit new places & try new experiences. So come along and join the adventure, you never know where it might lead!

Love Rye. My husband and I got married in the Town Hall and had a town crier. It was awesome. Great video.
Oh wow that sounds amazing. Thank you for watching, we’re glad you enjoyed it 😊
Rye is very nice, as too is Winchelsea down the road from there then too. And of course, the sea down the road too. I used to go there, although have not been for a long time now due to alas being disabled. Also, Rye was the setting for the tv series Mapp and Lucia where it was known as Tilling if I remember rightly. There were two adaptations of the series-on Channel 4 in 1985-86; and on BBC1 in 2014. Both had different actors in their cast lists so then too. Thank you of course!
Thank you for all the info Bruce. Maybe we will have to pay Winchelsea a visit. Think that is where Spike Milligan is buried.
@@JJExtra Thank you of course! I think Winchelsea was also home to Rod Hull, who used to be on tv-years ago now then I know-with his Emu. Sadly I know he died when I think he fell off his roof alas, although I don't remember when that was though alas too.
Yes you’re right, remember that being in the news quite some time ago now.
@@JJExtra Yes thank you there as before too. It must be a few years ago or more now sadly since that was in the news too.
I was just coming to the comments to point out that Rye is the inspiration for Tilling. The 2014 adaptation of M&L is dreadful and should be mercifully forgotten by everyone.
Rye is beautiful, Winchelsea beach is 👌 We are having a three day trip to Romney Marsh next weekend 😀 another fantastic location 😀 Great vlog guy's 👍
Thanks Philip! We hope you have a fantastic short break at Romney Marsh 😊
Loved Romney Marsh when my family went there when I was a kid, going to Dungeness on the small train was a particular highlight. The Lighthouse was awesome, and the terrain cool think it was Britains only desert at one point?
Lovely place guys. Will take it into account for next time.
Hugs from Argentina
You won’t be disappointed. It’s a beautiful place.
Very impressive 😊
As an avid coffee drinker myself, I love the fact you guys prioritize coffee first! 😆Now I know all the great coffee places to go to when I visit. Amazing vlog!
Thanks Brittany! It always has to start with coffee otherwise we wouldn’t make it to the middle of the day let alone the end 😂
i have just spent the afternoon waitch all your USA videos love it
That’s funny Pete because we have spent the afternoon travelling to Gatwick ready to fly to the USA tomorrow 😂
@@JJExtra i will be in Mexico in sept from Gatwick. i love las vegas been a number of time safe flight
Oh, Rye! This video brought back memories that are almost two decades old! 🥰
It’s such a beautiful place isn’t it?
I really like Rye, it is an old and interesting and pretty town. It gets so crowded in the summer months tho. xx
Yes we’ve seen the summer crowds on social media, that’s why we went in March 😂 we always say you know somewhere is beautiful when it’s a grey day and you can still appreciate its beauty
I think Lavenham in Suffolk gives Rye a run for its money as the prettiest town. I live in Rye btw.
Yes! Glass bottles of Coke! I’m so excited to stay at the Mermaid Inn soon. Although I’m not sure that I’m up for the adventure of that church tower climb. A little too intense looking for my taste. 😂
We knew you’d appreciate them! Can’t wait to see your stay at the Mermaid Inn, will be good to see the inside (and it has to be haunted 😂). That church tower was HARD WORK! Would have been easier if they turned one side in to a climbing wall 🤣
You guys are so funny, you crack me up!❤🤣 great how you found the cute little places, the alleyway/ short cut called needle st was interesting. Visited Rye years ago, seems like the independent pottery shop has disappeared, which is a shame, they created some unique pieces. Great tour guys! 👍
What a beautiful, little town! This is why people like me (non- British residents) like England in the first place. I just wonder what it is like looking at the graveyard from your kitchen or bedroom window: I've seen a lot of such homes all over England. 🙂
Thank you so much for sharing this tour of Rye. My grandfather was born in the Mermaid Inn (his father was the publican). He moved to Australia as a teenager, so for many of my family they haven't had the chance to visit. This will be great to share with them. Cheers
Oh wow that’s really cool. Glad you enjoyed the video and hope your family enjoy seeing it too 😊
On Mermaid St, the smugglers you referred to were undoubtedly the notorious Hawkhurst Gang from up the road in Kent.
Hi guys, really love watching your videos, but I was wondering if you could do more Sussex towns and coastal towns in Sussex please?
Well funny you should say that as we may have a few on our radar in the near future… any particular ones you had in mind?
@@JJExtra Ooh really, that's amazing! I don't have anywhere in particular but it would be lovely to have some new places to explore! Surprise me haha! X
The houses in Mermaid Street have some great names.
We did notice a couple but will pay more attention on our next visit!
Pretty little place but not the best. Love you guys❤
Where do you think the best is? We may need to pay a visit 😬
@@JJExtra love anywhere in the lake District or where there are mountains and there's some gorgeous places in Wales you would love. Maybe you could do the fastest zip wire in North Wales. 🙈
Oh yes we have seen that zip line… maybe we will make it to Wales later in the year…
Rye is a wonderful place great view from the tower next time you need to try Mariano’s fish and chip shop very nice fish I love old towns like rye loads of history attached to them. Take care guys
Thanks for the recommendation Kenny, we will definitely check it out next time we are there 😊
Rye is such a beautiful place, it’s a picture perfect place!
The words ‘picture perfect’ nearly made it on our thumbnail so we agree 😂
Now that is a beautiful town. But no way would I be doing that climb up that tower!!! Going to add this to list of places to visit on our next visit to England.
That climb was tough definitely! Definitely a beautiful place to visit on your next visit for sure 😊
when you go down the little ally way, there are some steps, the middle step has a date on it. Some locals avoid that step, as it was bad luck to use it .
My sister spent her honeymoon at the mermaid hotel back in 1974 ! Nothing has changed. There also used to be a little nightclub there. Called oasis back in the 80s not heard anyone speak about that in many years x
Oh wow, unbelievable to think it hasn’t changed in all that time. Hard to imagine a nightclub in such a quaint town but then it’s hard to imagine it being full of pirates and undesirables too 😂
It is now flats.
I have always said Rye is the nicest place in the UK .
Great video, best that I’ve seen of Rye. There is a a really good author Dylan Nathan Goodwin who writes fantastic genealogical mysteries based in Rye
Thanks Chris glad you enjoyed it! I (Jason) share a surname with that author so he must be good 😂
Thank you for sharing your video with us. I think Finchingfield in Essex, or some of the Cotswolds towns probably get my vote for the prettiest locations, but that's just personal preference. ^^
Oh we love the Cotswolds! Never heard of Finchingfield so thanks for putting it on our radar. We will have to do some research 😊
@@JJExtra Hello, the village of Lacock, in Wiltshire, is also worth looking at when you find time 💕 ^^
@@JJExtra A couple of interesting points on the village of Lacock. The village is owned almost in its entirety by the National Trust.
Lacock is mentioned in the Domesday Book. A scarecrow festival is held annually on Lacock village green.
Y'all need to come to Dallas Texas to Six Flags theme park or the Dallas Zoo
Definitely on our list 🤩
Guys I was right I instantly recognised rye from your teaser post you should have said you were nearby I could have come to meet you if you want to learn more my you tube friend Richard vobes the bald explorer has a video about smuggling on Romney marsh thanks for showing me the discovery centre at rye harbour didn't realise that was there thanks for such a brilliant video come back to Romney marsh soon guys
Next time we are that way we will let you know. We have watched some of Richard’s videos, he was part of our research before visiting Kits Coty
Just stumbled onto this video, loved your reactions, you're funny!
I was passing through Rye in my classic beetle in 2012 and had a quick look around. Also climbed the church tower, despite my insane acrophobia. The view was stunning, but the actual climbing itself was by far the best experience of the visit! About halfway, there was a very obese man, and to this day I wonder how he got up there and if he ever got out...
4:37 try doing that with breasts and a bum...🤣
Chester is best.
We love Chester… maybe we will have to do a sequel for most beautiful city in the uk 😉
i also forgot to mention that the bbc filmed a mini series of Mapp and Lucia in rye they also filmed at tenterden to simulate a period railway station as rye's actual station is too modern as you noticed
Somebody else mentioned that, not a series we are familiar with so will have to look it up!
@@JJExtra yes its based on books written by E F Benson - in the story Rye is renamed after the river, 'Tilling'.
when i watched it i love spotting the different filming locations the cobbled street where the cinema is these days was covered in builders sand and all the shops redressed in period style they did a brilliant job with the location shooting.
you can get the series on dvd i beleive
Are you ok josh? Mind ya noggin xx😂
Owl see you later 😂
I’d say chesterfield is the best
We have never been to Chesterfield so any recommendations of things to do if and when we visit?
You got your 100 likes, when are you staying? 😂😂
Planning is in the works 😉😂
Nooooo! Coffee? You are Brits - it's TEA first, you traitors(!) x
Noooo, tea is gross, always coffee 😜
A secret tunnel also connects The Mermaid Inn to The Old Bell Inn.
We saw the Old Bell Inn but did not know that’s where the tunnel went. Thank you for sharing!
