Thanks once again, Willie. Very interesting history of the town. Superbly done. Jou aanslag en aanbieding van die beeldmateriall is uitstekend. Baie dankie. Jy wys pragtige plekke wat ek beslis nooit self sal sien nie.👍👍👍
Cheers Jasper! Glad you enjoyed it. England has some surprisingly beautiful destinations, especially off the beaten track. Lots of trinkets and treasures at that flea market, I could easily spend a whole day there just browsing!
Great video! I live in Lewes so it was good to see it from the perspective of a visitor :) Such beautiful weather too and you take a really nice video.
Thank you very much for your kind words and for checking out my content! Much appreciated. I was very lucky with the weather - doesn't seem like the best summer so far though!
Great video again mate, Lewes is a great little town with a unique atmosphere, great pubs (best place for a pub crawl in Sussex in my opinion!) and beautiful countryside all around. You covered the town's history and sights really well, top research once again!
Cheers Matt! Had a great time in Lewes and enjoyed reading up about the town and its history. Exploring during the day and having a casual stroll is so different from the madness of Bonfire Night in November!
Very interesting place, Willie, if you visited you probably wouldn't notice half of what you showcased there👍. Fascinating history. I love how the drinking fountains and the shoe cleaners etc have been preserved. What a fantastic word "twitten" is😊
Hi Sheila! Hope all is well on your side. Thanks as always for commenting and contributing to the discussion. Glad you enjoyed the tour! Things like the boot scrapers and the fountains definitely shows that the community is proud of their town and its history. Re twitten, I've read that it is derived from a German word "zwischen" which means "between" - but yes what a great word :)
Hi willie another fine first class video from you and pleasure for showing plentiful interest information to inform about our travel requirements thanks!
You are very welcome Simon! Always such a pleasure hearing from you. Glad you enjoyed the video, there are some wonderful things to see and experience in Lewes!
We in New Zealand commemorate Guy Fawkes on the 5th November each year. Never understood why, when we are at the other end of the world. Very interesting walk about Willie. Thank you for the history commentary, what an amazing and very interesting place with heaps of history. Kiwi
Hi Swanoaks! Great to hear from you and that you are keeping well in Virginia! Yep, Guy Fawkes was the one in charge of the explosives during the Gunpowder Plot, so the fireworks are mostly synonymous with him rather than the other group of Catholics. It's always great to hear good feedback from people like yourselves - I'm delighted that you enjoyed it and I'm grateful for your ongoing support! Have a great day, Willie
The firework parades are the best I have been to. In 1975, real fires and "Kill the Pope" societies, real fights, plenty of beer, and lots of noise. There are You-tube films of the older parades if you search. Lewes is one of the best historic towns in England. Its quiet without the railway to Uckfield, and the A27 used to run up the High Street. Good Video, well researched.
Hi Willie - yes, Lewes is a beautiful town! It's been about three or four years since I last went down there for a wander, so it's about time I took the camera there for another visit! One of these days I'll also get there for the 5th of November celebrations, I hear it's something else. One of my uncles was evacuated there during the war, and always used to say that the locals pronounce it "Lose", which apparently is true! Who knew? 🤷♂️☺️
Hi Andy! So nice to hear from you again. How's the travels going? Definitely visit the Bonfire if you haven't done it yet, it really is an experience. I've not done it in many years so not sure how much it has changed though. Maybe leave in good time to avoid the rush for last-minute trains! Very interesting about the pronunciation!
@@andybaker2456 wow that is insane, best of luck! Are you going to climb a mountain or two? Hopefully I get to Kathmandu on my sabbatical, that is the plan at least!
@willieexplore Cheers Willie! No mountain climbing, but there will be plenty of exploring of Kathmandu and the surrounding area. If the weather plays ball, there might be a side trip to Pokhara, too. Fingers crossed. 😄
@@willieexplore I also live on the other side of the castle 🫣 so castle rise x2 a day as well! My legs are in great shape 😂 it’s also so lovely for someone to know the historic value of Lewes… and the reason why bonfire night is NOT a racist burning of crosses… the whole procession is mainly to represent the historic ties with Lewes and other nations and also within GB. I will be in it this 5th November as a Tudor lady, a nod to the divorce settlement (Anne of Cleves) from King Henry IIIV, the he didn’t kill!
@@jemsjemski533 Not just a great workout but a scenic one too! Glad you enjoyed the video, it is a wonderful place with so much history and stories to tell. Good luck for Bonfire, I am sure it will be very busy :)
As always, Sir Willy, a really well-done, interesting walk-around!! And now ... one more item for my bucket list: Lewes!! We love botanical gardens, big and small, and Lewes is loaded!! Perfect! Thanks for sharing. We had a great time in London a few years back, but only got out away as far as the Kew Gardens! Next time ... welll ... Lewes on the list. [Greetings from monsoony Tucson (this time of year).]
Hi Jim! Always such a huge pleasure hearing from you. There are so many interesting places away from the hustle and bustle of the big city, and often within touching distance. Lewes is no exception in this regard. You won't be disappointed! Hope you stay dry in Arizona! Best regards
Lewes and the East Sussex coast will not disappoint you. It's rich in history over the past four thousand years or so . . . and is exquisitely beautiful! Visit Alfriston, Seaford, West Dean and chase the chalk downs to Beachy Head itself.
you forgot Souther ham quarry where electrical implements are taken apart and dismantled and recycled just behind Glyndebourne opera house. Just think your old fridge being dismantled to the sound od Wagner's Valkyrie.
What a wonderful video, full of information as always! What a Friday night entertainment! Lewes is so picturesque, so historic, full of beautiful gardens, architecture, churches, history and how nicely presented Willie! Thank you so very much indeed! Please keep going, there’s so much to explore on home soil in the Uk , I believe the more such content you post, the more the algorithm will pick up on it and eventually give you more views. Hi Bip! Thanks again for commenting and engaging, as always. You are a pillar of my channel for sure. Glad you enjoy these vlogs about places in England. I certainly enjoy reading up about the various places and its history, time-consuming as it is. But as you say, these vlogs do add variety to my channel, which is always great. And it shows some of my viewers parts of the world they might not experience themselves - there is immense satisfaction for me in sharing my experiences with them. As I said in my close, TH-cam is (for me) all about making memories together with a community around you. Hope all is well - are you in the Caribbean at the moment or still in planning phase?
Great, I live not far away in Horsham, which is where Shelley is from and yes that building is referring to Percy Shelley the poet who was born in Horsham. Great video.
If you're a tourist planning on visiting London, Lewes is only an hour away on the train from Victoria Station and unlike some towns, it's not full of visitors.
Excellent. Thank you for showing this
My absolute pleasure! Thank you for watching and supporting my channel!
Lewes, a beautiful town, well kept in the south of the UK. Great tour.
