Good evening! Thank you so much for over 8,400 subscribers - I'm really glad you're enjoying the videos, and today we're going for a walk in the southernmost town we've visited so far on this channel :)
On the week of its 955th anniversary, we'll be looking at three towns linked to the incredible history of the Battle of Hastings, often said to be the last time that England was invaded by a foreign force (debate amongst yourselves!). On Wednesday, we'll visit Stamford Bridge in Yorkshire, the site of the 'other' battle of 1066, and then next Sunday, we'll head down to the seaside and take a walk around the centre of Hastings itself - so stay tuned for that :)

    Another cracking walk.
We visited Battle in the mid 1980’s, I don’t remember much about the village itself but do remember the battle site.
We had to pay to get in and there was as I remember a ruined church and a view at the top of the hill where Harrold had the best position which was given away when William the Bastard’s troops feigned a retreat.
We aren’t all fans of William in Yorkshire after the Harrying of the north, nor of Harold who if he hadn’t stuck his nose into Yorkshire’s Viking affairs at Stamford Bridge, not the football stadium, he would have had an army fit to defeat William then who knows how history would have turned out.
I should add that if my ancestry research is correct William is my 28th. Great Grandfather, much to my shame.
On a lighter note try and find and listen to Stanley Holloway’s monologue The Battle of Hastings, it makes me smile every time I listen to it.

Fascinating to hear! I do hope this video brought back some nice memories of Battle for you - it's a fascinating place to visit and paying to go inside the Abbey is certainly worth it to see the site of the famous battle.
As you mention the Harrying of the North certainly won't have won William many friends in Yorkshire - but the link between Battle and Stamford Bridge is a fascinating one, do stay tuned for a walk around Stamford Bridge itself this Wednesday :)
As for your ancestry there - that's a great fact to dine out on (though perhaps more down south than up north!)
Thank you so much for watching and a really interesting comment - I'm so glad you enjoyed the video!

Beautiful, simply beautiful. Another great walk, through a very historic town. Always amazed at the dates and ages of the buildings, pubs, and inns, and churches, you pass in your walks. So much history, in such small areas. Brilliant stuff. Thanks for another truly enjoyable walk!

It would be funny when the Battle would called "The Battle of Battle "! I have visit South England at 2013 and it was so beautiful , when i visited Cornwall , Bath , Exeter , Salisbury and many more , that was for me a impressed expierience to see the beautiful gothic Cathedrales and the amazing landscapes ! Thank you very much for the video !

Ha ha it would be funny indeed! There's an interesting story to why it wasn't called the Battle of Battle in the end - you can find out more about that in Sunday's video, where we visit Hastings itself! Southern England certainly is full of beautiful places - and there's so much more to the region than London - especially the many wonderful places you mention, I hope you had a great trip when you were there :)
Thank you so much for watching and for a lovely comment - I'm really glad you enjoyed the video!

Nice walk today in the town. I enjoyed it. Can't wait to see more tomorrow. I like the history lessons you gave on William the Conqueror. Your walks are always enjoyable. The town looks beautiful and historical. I like the medieval buildings also. How is your weekend? Mine is great. Have a great day 😀😀

Thank you for the Southampton walls walk. I have done some of that on lunchtimes while working in East Park Terrace, now Solent University, and remember many of the names. Good explanations. Thanks.

An entire town in the form of a tourist trap. Exists because of an Abbey that was built because of a battle that (almost certainly) happened elsewhere. I love that people spend money to go walk around a field that you can just access from a gate near the train station, and that field is probably not even where the battle happened but in the field over where kids are smoking weed.

Thank you so much! I'm really glad you enjoyed the video - the battlefield itself sits on private land, and as such I wasn't permitted to film inside on this occasion, perhaps some time in the future we'll return to Battle and climb Senlac Hill!

Thank you for another good tour of a famous town. So many beautiful buildings all part of history through the centuries. Its a shame that cars have to use the main road through this area with so many historical buildings.

You're welcome! And thank you so much for watching - I'm really glad you enjoyed the video, Battle is a gorgeous town with centuries of history as you mention! Cars can make it a bit more noisy at times, but in the evening it's a wonderfully calm place to visit, and the sun setting over Battle Abbey is just wonderful to see :)

I'm loving it! There's an endless supply of fascinating places to visit all over the UK - we could feasibly just keep going without ever leaving the country! But indeed I am looking forward to going abroad either next year or the year after, most likely around Ireland and perhaps the North of France - Paris, Calais, Saint Valery-sur-Somme and more :)
Might be a while, but it's something to look forward to in the future - so do stay tuned, and thank you very much for watching!
