Sandy Munro and his team were not at all confused by the empty space in the battery. They explained that in the case of a thermal runaway situation, the bottoms of the battery cells would push out into the empty space which becomes a "vent trough", providing ventilation capacity. Further, it provides crush space in the case of an extremely hard hit to the bottom while off-roading. Munro was quite impressed by the engineering of the CT battery.

Sam, for production efficiency and future retrofitting, the designers design the battery compartment to accommodate future battery energy densities. This means that the battery compartment is designed to accommodate a new battery chemistry that will support a 1000 km range without having to make enormous and costly changes to the giga press or production line changes.

In Sandy's Video "Tesla Cybertruck Battery Pack: Our First Impressions Under the Lid" at 23:40 he explains it's a crush zone. The extra space is on the underside of the pack. Crush zone and off-gassing volume in case a cell (or multiple) go.

@@davidbecker4900 Lmafo no, you don’t need ducting with more cross sectional area than house hvac systems. You maybe need one square inch to not let pressure build, not two square feet. The gasses come from the cells encased in solid plastic, that’s going to build pressure and rupture first. Literally no other packs have that much area, in fact it’s very thin. You don’t understand the very basics and obviously have no engineering background.

Fantastic tear down. That battery pack has alot of room to grow. Additionally the batter pack is shown upside down. So they are also allowing for a "Crumple Zone" on the bottom if someone hit stumps or rocks... so that extra space is there by design.

I thought Munro Live's comentry said that they opened the pack upside down, so the void is at the bottom of the car. Just like the empty voids each side, the void between the floor pan and underside of the batteries would provide protection of the batteries in case of a substantial impact on the floor pan?

If the Cybertruck is actually designed to pressurize the battery pack for buoyancy while in water, then it would make sense to have more cavity space to enhance the buoyancy. Where else could they put a huge air bladder for that purpose?

      @ian3580 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

@@thystaljaard7607 Pressurizing the pack does not increase buoyancy. Think of a SCUBA tank. It is not MORE buoyant when it is pressurized (it's actually technically heavier and less buoyant, no matter how small that difference may be) vs being empty. When talking about filling things with air for buoyancy, it is about volume of air, not pressure of the air.
So pressurizing will help keep water out.....but I'd be shocked if that pack stays pressurized very long once subjected to the harsh environment of driving.

It seems that the original intent was to fully populate the battery pack but it was later determined that this was not possible. Potential reasons for not fully populating the pack include 1) supply chain constraints. 2) it would take too long to charge a fully loaded pack during a single charging session. 3) negative effects on vehicle performance 4) safety concerns. Can the tires handle the weight? Thermal issues - is there a significantly higher probability of a battery fire developing - especially in warmer ambient environments.

    • @MaximGhost

To address the battery fire threat, they were supposed to making 4680s with LiFePO4. But, they are behind schedule on that because they are bogged down now on trying to get more charge density in the Lithium-Ion 4680s.

Cybertruck AWD's range of 340 miles is fine, in my opinion, unless you often tow something long distances in which case the range extender will supply the extra energy needed. I'm happy with the current battery configuration on my Cybertruck. A better charging curve is coming soon. Remember that adding more batteries will reduce CT's cargo capacity which is currently 2500 lbs. That's 1000 lbs more than Chevy's Silverado EV pickup. Put five 180 lb people in the Silverado and the load capacity drops to 540 lbs. Tesla made the right decision.

The most straightforward answer - to me - would be that the battery framework is structural, and would cost a LOT to re-design at this stage.
The batteries themselves have seen so many improvements in the last 12-24 months that Tesla found that they only need half as many - of this size/design - to achieve the same, advertized performance.
Therefore, Tesla decided that it makes more sense to only half populate the battery framework!
I however do not understand the Tesla management's thinking about NOT informaing Sandy Munro about it - IF my thinking is correct - knowing full well that his team and competitors are 100% likely to disect all thge cars in search of ideas or faults that they can capitalize on!

We already know the drag coefficient is 0.34, and the Model X is 0.24, which is 42% more. We have data on Model X for millions of miles, which give a combined 330wh/mi. So the Cybertruck must have a combined 470wh/mi. A 123kWh pack would give a combined range of 262 miles or 420 km.
You would need a 235kWh pack for 500 miles. That can't possibly sell for less than 180k MSRP with the current 4680 battery.
They need to slash the battey production cost by half. Which is why the CATL partnership comes for. Why design 2 battery packs when the first will be replaced soon?

Room for future expansion and ability to use different battery types without the need to completely redesign the pack plus allow for head space to have reserve air volume in the pack when fording water ways, etc so if the pump stops you'll have a margin of backup though the passive system of extra air volume inside the pack without having to install large external reserve air tanks.
Tesla engineers things for a reason and just doesn't spend extra money over-sizing things for nothing.
    Best!
