Get the 2.7 you will not regret it. I believe that this is one of the smoothest and quietest running engines I have ever owned and also one of the fastest.
For its size that 2.7 is beastly I don’t put a lot of stock in exhaust noise (I’m a grown mature secure-in-my-manhood adult man) but I do enjoy when the twin turbos kick in and I look down and I’m all of a sudden going 90 and don’t even realize it. Plus it’s not killing me at the pumps

This is probably the best explanatory video of this type. I upgraded from the 2004 F150 XL 4.6 v8 to a 2013 F150 Platinum 5.0 v8. The capability of my 2013 F150 is amazing compared to my 04 which I Towed a 4600 lbs Tritoon as well as with my 2013. All of these models today are incredible, especially if you are upgrading from an older generation. I love the v8 coyote but I think that 2.7 v6 ecoboost is just plenty and a great tow vehicle too. Watch your gear ratios. I have the 3.55 which is an all around great combo.
I have the 2.7, honestly I like it. Plenty of get up and go, does pretty well on gas. Granted, my truck doesn’t do anything real heavy duty but I’ve hauled 30 large bags of sand with it, pulled a small camper, pulled a pontoon boat and I had no problems
I love my 2.7. Very powerful and quiet. The RPM doesn't move at all when I put it on Cruise Control at 75 MPH on hilly highways. However, fuel consumption of that truck is very sensible. I average 19-20 MPGs in winter.
I had the 2015 F150. It was the 2.7 Eco boost V6. Yesterday I bought a 2019 F150 with the 3.5 Eco boost V6. Really liked the 2.7 l. Looking forward to the 3.5 l Eco boost.
i rented an f150 with the 5.0 to tow a car up to flagstaff from tucson and i got 18.7 towing about 5000lns and thats despite the fact i passed every econobox car on the right on the steepest part up the mountain and let off when i noticed i hit 90...that truck is an absolute beast and so stable its unreal, zero trailer sway
Having both had a 5.0V8 and a 2nd generation Ecoboost, I can tell you one thing. If you want sound, get V8. If you want power, towing, mpg and insane speed...get the Ecoboost. But then again, I use my trucks for work. Not sound and looks. I have my Shelby for that.
Not sound or looks. Well said, sir. I grew up on a farm. We beat the hell out of our trucks and brag about the dents on them. A badge of honor. Nowadays, people freak out about a little scratch on their pickups. Lol
Exactly, just traded my 5.0 in for a 3.5l ecoboost. Just not as concerned with the sound, I'm planning on getting a GT500 for that and all the fun that comes with it. I don't need that out of my truck.
Eco boost gets worse mpg in real world testing at 18 to 19 mpg hwy. 5.0 gets 31 to 23 hwy in real world testing 5.0 with supercharger gets 18 hwy. 😁😁😁😁😁😁❤❤❤🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸
Thanks for the videos. You helped me decide what F150 package to go with. I bought a 2017 XL crew cab 2.7 ecoboost in race red. It also has the sport, the STX and the FX4 packages. I have owned for 3 weeks and really like it.
My dad has the 1st gen ecoboost v6. He's at 89k miles and has zero issues so far. He averages 19mpg. He changes the fluids and maintains it by the book. If he gets to 200k, I'll look at buying one too. I'll need to look back at this video when I'm older. Great review! 😄
Mr Anderson Does good for me. Got the max towing of 7,600lbs with the 3.73 and the Reg Cab 8ft bed. No problems so far after buying used. Gets 5K oil changes
We just got the 2017 5.0 V8 Super Crew XLT/Sport FX Off Road Black on Black.. Moon Roof extended fuel tank [range of 600 miles+] rear window slide/trailer brake control/bucket seats console/traction/sway control/inverter 110vac outlets/ very great lay out/Nav system/flat rear floor with rear seats that fold up... Trans has 3 modes=Regular/Tow/Sport each has different shift points... WE LOVE IT! 7500 miles the first month... yes you read that correct... On Freeway/Highway 23.3 MPG + Around town, you will be lucky to get 12.5 MPG because it's too fun to drive/you wont keep your foot out of it...... the sound... nice....The power... wow, pulling a hill, cruise control up and down towing a max weight trailer, your engine holds the truck/trailer back. No brakes needed... the brakes may last forever! The trans downshifts and always keeps you in the power band... Power! 385 HP/387 lb torque may be low! This truck has "GUTS"... Also, 7.7 quarts of oil, plus filter = 8 quarts on change... your engine has super deep/pan oil /engine will last & Last... My 1997 F350 460 cid crew cab has a 6 quart change...that engine is 50% larger displacement [and still going] I expect this Ford F 150 most likely will be my last bought vehicle ever... it may out last me... haha at least 30 more years... Ford did good! IMHO---Get the V8
I love how my coyote howls! I get 18+ mpg ave with a K@N air filter installed. The other day I had 1,000lbs of dirt in the box of the truck and had no issues.
currently in the market for one. thank you so much. 98% of my questions answered in the vid. i think ima go witht the 2.7 v6. only cause i commute and will on need to tow dirt bikes and a kayak.
Ford has done an awesome job with the v6 engines. They really tapped into the potential of the 6 banger and are making it work for everyone from weekend warriors to construction workers. Sure, there's been some kinks with the engines and a few horror stories, but what truck doesn't have that? They all have that. The fact that Ford even offers these engines is pretty innovative. I'd love to get a 2.7 ecoboost but I just don't need it and am not in the market for it. I bought a 2016 toyota tacoma sr5 4x4 4 door short bed. It does everything phenomenally for me. Daily commuter, wheeling vehicle, hunting rig, work truck, and pulls my 6x10 trailer with the dirt bikes in it with ease. I won't need to tow or haul any more than that. But 26 mpg in a full sized pickup, that's impressive. I got 28 on the highway once in my taco, but it was short lived lol.
I'm happy to see the 5.0 is the V-8 Ford went with and not the 5.4. I've had for trucks, and still have an old 94 F-150 in the fleet that is still running strong. Just give me the tried and true 5.0 and I'll deal with the gas mileage
I travel a lot between NE Texas and South Texas so my dog was complaining he didn't have enough room in the back seat area of my 2007 F150 so we got the 2016 lariat with as much in it as I could stand. I didn't want the 3.5 because in my research I found there were issues with coasting down the turbines without cooling when the engine shut off. So I went with the 2.7 which had very impressive performance attributes. So with 12,500 miles I'm getting 23.4 on the highway and ~16 in town. I know I drive a little fast on the freeway. If I stuck to 65mph I can get 30+. But I like pushing it. The only thing I don't like is the auto off and having to remember to bypass this every time I go somewhere. Other then that so far I'm very happy with my 2nd to last truck. Sad to say they won't give you the 2.7 in The platinum or other high end packages or id gotten that.
I bought my F150, they kept pushing the 3.5 EB... I said Im trading in mt Mustang GT, I want the 5.0 or i walk across the street to Chevy? I now have 107k miles on my 5.0 no issues at all!
BravoFoxtrot LLC the 3.5 dual turbo does have issues they are breaking timing chains and coming apart ! Not only that but two turbo to replace in time! I will either go for the 3.3 at 290hp or the 5.0 in a 2019 leftover . The 3.3 pulls 7900lbs drove one plenty of hp!
I heard that Ford was coming up with a F150. It would be pretty interesting to see how the 3.5L V6 performs with the hybrid system. That way, one can save a lot of fuel on road trips while towing on flat interstates and use complete engine capability to tow up a Grade.
Had 2013 3.5 ecoboost, absolutely loved it, it’s a beast always ran it on 93 octane, have a small trailer I pull, ecoboost power is overkill in most cases and anyone doing serious long term towing I don’t recommend the eco beast. Just bought 2017 with the 5.0 coyote, love that truck, and it will hold up to long term towing, and I only need 87 octane in it. Ecoboost is a pure joy to drive, gas mileage sucks, but that because it hard to stay out of the turbos, it’s just fun to drive something that big and blow away everthing on the road, put a mpt tune on that truck and stock it will do 13’s in the 1/4 mile. Truely enjoyed my ecoboost, but long term I will stay with the 5.0 ! Just my 2cents.
@@paulhunter9613 I know that, didn’t need 93 in my mustang either but it always got 93 to. Long highway trips I always used 87, I’m in in f250 power stroke now and diesel is killing me. The early eco boost had valve issues also, if you ran on 93 it avoids that problem, they have since fixed that issue with dual fuel injection.
Do you enjoy coked intake valves from direct injection? Failed supplemental vacuum pumps? Burned turbos? Moisture contamination in your intercooler? Changing spark plugs twice as often? Lower fuel economy while towing? Two-mile-long timing chains that flop around? If so, the EcoBoost is for you!! Come on down to the dealership while supplies last!!
***** It's not just about the turbos. It's about all the other supplemental garbage in addition to the turbos, and also the fact that a tiny V6 with turbos in a full size truck is a new concept that had a ton of bugs to work out, and therefore the FACT is that the EcoBoost trucks are less reliable than their V8 counterparts.
Tommy Truth I don't think it's luck when the majority operate fine. If the majority for turbos were failing abnormally on ford engines their would be a ecogate going on.
I own a 2016 xlt 5.0, and the mpg is pretty accurate. I have just over 6,000 miles on mine and I average 15.7mpg. I live in houston TX so stop and go traffic is what my truck sees the most. Love my truck, and that 5.0!
Here's my take. I'll probably end up with the 5.0L V8 for a couple reasons. Originally I wanted to go with the 2.7L EcoBoost, but I cannot get it in the configuration I want. My ideal truck is a 4x4 XLT sport Crew Cab 6.5' bed. Not possible on the 2.7L unless I drop to 2wd or 5.5' bed or do a different engine. Huge downside to me.
Brian Chapman Base model? I got it in my truck, and it does quite well in a 2 door 8ft bed. I would recommend to try to get a used with the 3.73 axle, as it’s the only way to get the 7600lbs.
@@cory2146 better than a 5.0? I'm looking at a new f150 and seems like they are all 2.7, as long as it pulls a 5000lb trailer as good as my tahoe I'd be happy
UBBERTANKER I have done a ton of research , driven all the engines , heck I had a 3/4 ton diesel before. Finally pulled the plug on a 19 2.7 if you are not towing heavily like 6k or under the 2.7 really is a little bottle rocket. It has the torque at a much lower rpm like 2700 it reaches 80% of its torque compared to the 5.0 which is well above 4k. So 95% of daily driving you are getting the peak power , fun instead of the 5.0 where you have to full throttle to reach the power. The 2.7 really is the best daily driver for someone occasionally towing lighter . I will say it still will tow circles around the old 5.3 L I have. Once you drive it , see the power , mileage if you keep your foot out of it lol you will walk away with it. Anyone questioning reliability , as long you maintain it will be reliable. Ford torture tested these engines , and if maintenance is done they are great trucks.
I test drove the 3.5L TT and I loved it and maybe I should've went with it, but I then drove a 2.7L and I wasn't able to chirp the tires, but I was overall impressed with the 0-60 time. So I ended up buying a 2019 XLT with 302A package and a rear locking differential. The color of the truck is awesome, magma red, which looks black. I absolutely love the truck! The 2.7L TT block is made out of compact graphite iron which is supposed to be a big stronger than cast iron. Another great feature on these new engines, 2.7L and 3.5L, is the port fuel injection in addition to the direct injection which helps keeps the intake valves clean. I don't plan on any upgrades to my truck just yet, other than the weathertech floor mats, bed cover and bed rug. What really nice, I don't have to worry about the body rusting, since it's aluminum. Maybe after the warranty is up, I'll add some performance upgrades. Like bigger compressor wheels for the turbo, flex fuel tune, bigger injectors, etc and get 500rwhp and 550ft-lbs of torque.
Bought a ‘19 STX last year and was looking for a 3.5EB...unable to locate. Settled for the 5.0. It does fairly well towing my 6000lb travel trailer, although not as well as the 3.5EB would.
I'm hoping to get a 2018 regardless of engine. A 2018 5.0 would be the hope but the 2.7 and the 3.5 would be in the conversation. The grill change to the gillete razor like the f250 looks really good
@@vaporizer28 that's not the case. It's a 3.5 Twin Turbo vs natural aspired 5.0 Easy to see what numbers beat what. Maintenance isn't bad. Look online at EBs with 200k miles.
I’ve had a 3.5 N.A. , 5.0 N.A. , and now a 3.5 turbo. I went with the 3.5 turbo because they started spraying in ceramics in the cylinders, instead of steel liners. Some of them, are blowing oil like a diesel. When they have them fixed , I’ll go back to 5.0
I've had a 2016 F165 (F150 2.7 ecoboost) 4 door for almost 3 months. I love the power and the 18+ mpg in the city. The worst city mpg was 17.6 and the best was 19.2. I have not towed with it but I'm sure it want have any problem. It don't sound as good as a v8 but it don't burn fuel like one either. When I get on it. It sound like an 87 Grand National without the turbo whine. A 2010 5.4 can't touch it.
I just picked up a Red 2015 Ford F150 XLT Super Crew 4x4 with a 3.5 Ecoboost it had a little under 5000 on it. I trade in my 90 F150 4x4 with over 15000 on it. Love this truck! It has a Sport mode WoW!! But i do have to say i do miss my Rumble of my dual exhaust! Looking forward of years of fun and no major problems! My old truck NEVER gave me trouble! oil and breaks that was all i ever did!
my wife has a 2014 F150 Lariat 5.0L and I have a 2015 F150 Platinum with the 3.5L EB. and it's a beast. I love how it pulls.the 5.0l sounds much better, but the 3.5L pulls out like a Missouri Mule
Eric Haley Put a roush supercharger on the 5.0 and your wife will be laughing all the way home. Even tuned that EcoBoost wouldn't stand a chance against a supercharged v8.
Lol, you change those turbos and start cranking big Power out of that v6 I guarantee you'll loose most all reliability, and say good by to your fuel mileage that is already not as good as expected.
I asked my friend who is a engineer for Ford in Dearborn why they still made the v-8. He said the reason is the perception that V-8 engines are more durable and more powerful. He said comparing the eco boost engine to the V-8 is like comparing a picture tube t.v. to a 4k t.v.
The 2.7 ecoboost has Direct Injection only, this means probable intake valve carbon build up problems. The 5.0 V8 has reliable, proven Multi-Port Injection, and is recommended by Ford if you tow heavy loads often, the increased price over the 2.7L, is nothing more than a deterrent by Ford from choosing it, since the V8 has to be cheaper to produce than the 2.7L, with it's twin turbo's, intercooler, direct injection, complexity, and more time and labor to assemble. The 17' 3.5L Turbo's most important upgrade is Dual Injection, the addition of Multi-Port and Direct injection should stop, or extremely decrease the carbon build up of DI alone, as well as improving power over the RPM range. It's to bad it's only available on the F-150. Hopefully dual injection will spread to all engines with DI.
Absolutely. My 2015 Sierra DI 5.3L had so much build up after 15,000 miles that it clogged the cats and caused them to fail. Dual injection is a must. I'm trading in for the 2017 3.5L EB for that reason. Good info!
atmospheric82. Isn't it sad, that a 40,000+ dollar truck can require those kind of repairs at 15,000 miles. It's obvious auto makers are aware of DI's problems, but only a few engines have dual injection, and in auto advertisements they use DI as a selling point, well aware that the majority of buyers will take their word, without researching it themselves. They need to address this problem, or revert back to MPI. By the way, I hope you'll be happy with your new truck.
The choice was easy for me, Coyote V8. The EcoBoost is impressive, no doubt, but I can't get over the wimpy exhaust note. I like my truck to sound like a truck, not a Honda Accord.
I honestly don’t even really think about the sound anymore . The 3.5 eb torque is just far superior to the 5.0 for towing , and performance especially if you do any kind of tune . I don’t think anyone can argue that the 5.0 as far as reliability is the best choice . I would argue that the ecoboost engines are getting better , and better and I have no doubt about these trucks going 200k .
Great job on this video. Ive found the different options for a F-150 mind boggling and this cleared a lot of that up. I love the looks of the Tundra's, but theyve been slacking for so long (no significant upgrade since 2007) I may end up giving a Ford a serious look.
I've used them all and the 3.5 Ecoboost is the best. Hands down. Unless you want to having a nice aggressive sound and waste fuel get the 5.0 V8. If your not going to tow heavy things get the 2.7 EB.
I have a 2016 expedition Limited with a 3.5 eco-boost. The only complaint I have about this is the turbo wine sound when I was looking for more of a luxury quiet vehicle. Is the second generation any quieter?
I love mine too. I'm not into exhaust notes anymore. They used to get me into trouble as I used to drive to hear them. the whistle of the turbines suffice.
I recently bought a 2018 f150 Lariat crew with the 5.0. It's the fastest vehicle I've ever owned! Much faster than my 79 Trans Am, 82 Z28 or BMW 325i. 395bhp and an aluminum body makes this thing a rocket in comparison to my 2013 2500HD despite it's 400bhp! When I pass on a two lane highway I'm up to 90 before I know it and have to slow back down.
Fix the v6 ecoboost problem with blow by and you'll have a lot more customers come in for that, we got the 2016 4x4 5.0L added some step bars great truck!
The all new GLS 63 boasts 603hp/627lb ft handcrafted 4.0L twin turbo V8. But I love my F-150 with 2.7L ecoboost, a true reliable workhorse. But nothing will ever beat the M156 6.3L naturally aspirated V8 451-622hp, best sounding engine hands down
I have the 3.5 N/A engine. Works just fine for me. More power than you would expect. Just got to rev the engine a bit more. I have an XLT SuperCrew. Zero issues. 0 to 60 in 9 seconds. Love it
@@avi8or63 I have a 2014 STX rwd supercrew cab with the 3.7L NA engine. Bought the truck for my business as a service truck. Plenty of power for day to day driving. I do have an aluminum cap on the bed with the cargo bins on the sides. Towing up to its 6500lb limit is ok as well. I have towed a Uhaul car carrier with a '65 Mustang on it with no problems. Driven from Dallas, Tx to VA Beach, VA and then another trip to Arkansas from VA Beach and both trips were just fine. Average mpg was 11-12 on those two trips. Driving thru the mountains in NC and TN on I-40 wasn't an issue either. Yes, the engine was singing but had no problem maintaining highway speeds. You just have to keep your foot down a little more. Town-haul mode works great in the mountains. So, to sum it up, the "bottom line" motor is no slouch. It has adequate power for light towing and plenty for normal driving. You certainly will not win any races, but it is a reliable motor. My next F150 will have the V8, though. I dont want to have to pay for premium fuel to get the max HP out of an EcoBoost. V8 recommends 87 fuel. I read another forum that someone dyno tested their 2.7 EcoBoost with 87 and 91 octane fuel and had readings of 250 HP and 300 lbs torque with 87 fuel. That is quite a power hit for 87 fuel. Anyway, enjoy the truck you have. Employ its strengths and know its limitations, and keep on truckin'.
The 3.5 n/a makes as much power as base v8's did in the late 90's. It might not be great as a long trip towing truck but it definitely has plenty of power for daily driving and working.
I really hate how Ford pushed the V8s away. A naturally aspirated V8 will always be the most reliable engine in a truck (well except for the cast iron I6). My dad recently bought a new truck and had some simple requirements: V8 gas, 4x4, Vinyl floor, Regular cab, long Bed. Could not find an F150 anywhere that met these specs. Ended up getting a smoking deal on a 2016 F250, which I like better with its D60 front end and manual shift transfer case (I imagine those won't be around much longer).
Good review, factual, good explanations. I would go with the V-8, I love the Fords, good looking trucks, reliable, I've owned 6 of them since 1981, but I didn't want a 6 cylinder, could have driven the 5.0, but I was a little disappointed over the green weenie thing, so I bought a Tundra Crewmax 5.7. It run's good, plenty of power, all I ever tow is a 17' Jonboat and a utility trailer. I drive from S. TX. to Houston a lot, mileage could be better, but I really getting my foot in it, it RUNS !
How does all that relate to the Expedition? They have the same engine choices? And what about the new 2018 Expedition; better to wait for the 2018? Is it that much different/better then the 2017?
I've owned a 2016 lariat for 7 months with the 3.5L ecoboost and I'm currently getting an average of 20mpg. Lots of short trips of 30 miles or less and in hilly country.
Working with all of these engines day in and day out being a Ford product development engine dyno tech. You should get the 5.0L. Reason I say that is less hardware to go wrong, and the engine itself is proven to last longer then any of the ecoboost engine. The 3.5 n/a is also a great engine option its basically bullet proof, but ford does not market or want you to buy any of the naturally aspirated engines.
But the five oh is plagued with high oil consumption and the death rattle. I wouldn’t even consider a five oh in a truck that will be used to tow things. It’s a car based engine in a truck
By the way, I couldn't help but being impressed with how well you knew about everything, even if you had notes written down to glance at, and I know it was edited, but very informative without a lot of unnecessary talk.
Thank you sir.. Definitely did the research on this one, we get asked this question a lot so it was easier to just make a video to show it all. Thanks for watching!
C Smith in the plans for 2018 6 clyinder from Volvo will put out over 200 plus HP and close to 400lbs of torque Will be great for towing and fuel mileage aimed at the eco diesel in the RAM 1500
that's a great recap on different models and engine packages, but for me I shop trucks and choose trucks with the least repair instances, so which one sees the dealer mechanics the least? Is it 2.7 Ecoboot, or the 5.0 V8? I don't want to pay $40,000 for a truck+$1,000 +$1,000 +$1,000 +$1,000 +$1,000 + $1,000 every time there's a breakdown.

I have to say Ford is getting better and better. They released a lot of good cars 2015/2016. Actually I wouldn't mind the sound of the V6. Tbh I prefer the sound of smooth engines over a V8. But I6 and especially Porsche's F6 are awesome! I still wouldn't mind the EcoBoost V6 though^^ Anyways nice video, as always. ;)
Oniix ™ that comeback was awful. Maybe one day you'll grow some balls and drive a v8. But I gusse if your into the xxx lawn more sounds. Than just keep preferring a v6
johnny miller Yours was even worse but that's not the point. Anyways you're definitly not in the position to say I should grow some balls lol It doesn't seem like you're pretty intelligent either... Hell you can't even speak proper English.
johnny miller Alot of people. For the f150, it seems like the v6 is the best option for towing, for something like the mustang, the 4 cyl and v6 are more balanced for handling, because there's less weight over the front wheels, so better weight distribution. I like v8s as much as the next guy, but with modern tech, smaller engines can do pretty amazing things now days.
Get the 2.7 you will not regret it. I believe that this is one of the smoothest and quietest running engines I have ever owned and also one of the fastest.
The 2.7 is a great engine, I never thought I'd opt for that if I had the choice but we had one as a rental and that thing is really good

i rented an f150 with the 5.0 to tow a car up to flagstaff from tucson and i got 18.7 towing about 5000lns and thats despite the fact i passed every econobox car on the right on the steepest part up the mountain and let off when i noticed i hit 90...that truck is an absolute beast and so stable its unreal, zero trailer sway
Passing those Prius’s had too be a blast
5.0 gets 31 to 23 hwy in real world testing
5.0 with supercharger gets 18 hwy.

Quieter the better so I just bought the 2.7. Its a better built engine than the 3.5!
Thanks for the videos. You helped me decide what F150 package to go with. I bought a 2017 XL crew cab 2.7 ecoboost in race red. It also has the sport, the STX and the FX4 packages. I have owned for 3 weeks and really like it.
just got the v8 2017 last night. hope i made the right choice. biggest ever purchase for me a vehicle.
Marvin Kiper it’s been two years. How has your truck been?? Any major/minor issues to share??
My dad has the 1st gen ecoboost v6. He's at 89k miles and has zero issues so far. He averages 19mpg. He changes the fluids and maintains it by the book. If he gets to 200k, I'll look at buying one too. I'll need to look back at this video when I'm older. Great review! 😄
From a financial standpoint. 3.5 N/A in XL trim with the chrome package. Sensible, reliable, no-frills, reliable.
On Freeway/Highway 23.3 MPG +
Around town, you will be lucky to get 12.5 MPG because it's too fun to drive/you wont keep your foot out of it...... the sound... nice....The power... wow, pulling a hill, cruise control up and down towing a max weight trailer, your engine holds the truck/trailer back.
My 1997 F350 460 cid crew cab has a 6 quart change...that engine is 50% larger displacement [and still going]
I expect this Ford F 150 most likely will be my last bought vehicle ever... it may out last me... haha at least 30 more years...
Ford did good!
IMHO---Get the V8
The 2.7 in sport mode. Thank you Ford.
I love how my coyote howls! I get 18+ mpg ave with a K@N air filter installed. The other day I had 1,000lbs of dirt in the box of the truck and had no issues.

Mitchell your brother-in-law was exellent..he did answer my questions. I think the 2.7 will be perfect for me. thanks
Went with XL SRX with 2.7L and 3.53 gears. Tried the 5.0 and really doggy off the line compared to the 2.7 which also is a 10spd, smooth.
currently in the market for one. thank you so much.
2012 F150 3.5 Ecoboost, pulling a bass boat or 30ft 5790lb travel trailerl most of the time. 56K miles, no issues!!!! Fast, strong and runs great.
I'm happy to see the 5.0 is the V-8 Ford went with and not the 5.4. I've had for trucks, and still have an old 94 F-150 in the fleet that is still running strong. Just give me the tried and true 5.0 and I'll deal with the gas mileage
That “tried an true v8”doesn’t exist any longer

Which is faster
2.7 is the future. Amazing engine!
Indeed
Why not the 3.5?
I hope not. I’m actually actively looking at them and I’ve test drove both. The 2.7 just seems weak compared to the 3.5
I HAVE THE 2014 ECOBOOST 4X4 AND WOW! LOTS OF POWER!!
I traded my 3.5L Eco for a 2.7L. Love it! I think the 5.0L does sound cool but it just doesn't perform well. Take a lot of RPMs to get going.
Why are you buying a truck for performance? I would understand gas mileage but the performance shouldnt matter
Im doing the samething. 3.5 to 2.7
DID YOU NOTICE A BIG DIFFERENCE BETWEEN THE POWER OF THE 3.5L TO THE 2.7L??

Agreed. Natuarally aspirated...less moving parts, less to break brother 👍
Except the 5.0 has issues, like oil consumption.
Southern Nevada offroading and back country and four cams in the newest 5oh...
BravoFoxtrot LLC good call.! Rather put more gas then deal with issues

All engines will have their problems down the road.
I heard that Ford was coming up with a F150. It would be pretty interesting to see how the 3.5L V6 performs with the hybrid system. That way, one can save a lot of fuel on road trips while towing on flat interstates and use complete engine capability to tow up a Grade.
EXCELLENT engine comparison!
Fun fact, you don’t t need 93 octane for the eco
OFFRD LOL!!!
***** It's not just about the turbos. It's about all the other supplemental garbage in addition to the turbos, and also the fact that a tiny V6 with turbos in a full size truck is a new concept that had a ton of bugs to work out, and therefore the FACT is that the EcoBoost trucks are less reliable than their V8 counterparts.
thats a time thing, not an engine size thing. New tech will always be more unreliable until its old tech.
Eco boost engines are a disaster.
I clicked thumbs up for you!
for mentioning my 2017 3.5 eco. 10 speed is the best. 😂
Traded the ecoboost for the 5.0 and I love the immediate response, no more turbo lag 🤘
I had a '16 with the 2.7 EB and never noticed turbo lag.
@@tedschmitt178 there isn’t any turbo lag, it’s something that magnetic 5.0 says to make him feel better about his poor decision in engines

3.5 v6 works for me
Brian Chapman Base model? I got it in my truck, and it does quite well in a 2 door 8ft bed. I would recommend to try to get a used with the 3.73 axle, as it’s the only way to get the 7600lbs.

@@cory2146 better than a 5.0? I'm looking at a new f150 and seems like they are all 2.7, as long as it pulls a 5000lb trailer as good as my tahoe I'd be happy
@@UBBERTANKER If you havn't already, take one for a test drive. You will be impressed.
Dude, excellently presented, and informative. Thanks.
I'm hoping to get a 2018 regardless of engine. A 2018 5.0 would be the hope but the 2.7 and the 3.5 would be in the conversation. The grill change to the gillete razor like the f250 looks really good

Put a roush supercharger on the 5.0 and your wife will be laughing all the way home.
Even tuned that EcoBoost wouldn't stand a chance against a supercharged v8.
Curtis Bull before or after I change the turbos on the 3.5?
Lol, you change those turbos and start cranking big Power out of that v6 I guarantee you'll loose most all reliability, and say good by to your fuel mileage that is already not as good as expected.
Those ecoboosts aren't built to handle to much more power then what is stock.
I asked my friend who is a engineer for Ford in Dearborn why they still made the v-8. He said the reason is the perception that V-8 engines are more durable and more powerful. He said comparing the eco boost engine to the V-8 is like comparing a picture tube t.v. to a 4k t.v.
+tbone116 that couldn't have been said any better. We agree 100%
By the way, I hope you'll be happy with your new truck.
atmospheric82 dude what gas are you using?
JJD I only use 91 octane.
2017 's 2.7 got dual injection as well
Yes, very informative. Appreciate the text to back up the narrative. Outstanding!
The choice was easy for me, Coyote V8. The EcoBoost is impressive, no doubt, but I can't get over the wimpy exhaust note. I like my truck to sound like a truck, not a Honda Accord.
Supa Doopa I like performance over sound. 3.5lEB was an easy choice.
hard chice for me , i like the 5.0 but ive been hearing about piston sounds that end up needig a replacement
Supa Doopa
Does the engine sound make you feel more manly? Tow more? Lol
I like to look for them in the rear mirror. Make mine a 3.5 Ecoboost.
Every true ford enthusiast you speak with choses the V8 time and time again.
There are so many in the scrap yards it’s easy to get parts
Great job on this video. Ive found the different options for a F-150 mind boggling and this cleared a lot of that up. I love the looks of the Tundra's, but theyve been slacking for so long (no significant upgrade since 2007) I may end up giving a Ford a serious look.
I've used them all and the 3.5 Ecoboost is the best. Hands down. Unless you want to having a nice aggressive sound and waste fuel get the 5.0 V8. If your not going to tow heavy things get the 2.7 EB.
when you say you can tow 7600 lb. with a 3.5 eng. your charts say you have to have a 3.73 rear end they come with a 3.55 that tow only 5000 lb.
The electronic lockup gets you the 3.73.

How can you make that statement when Ford is the first to use turbo engine in a full size truck?
That's the way to buy a truck that will last. Only buy an EcoBoost if you plan to sell in 3-5 years and buy new again.

To bad you decided to downgrade to a tundra, but it sounds like it works for you
Great informative video. Thanks for sharing.
How does all that relate to the Expedition? They have the same engine choices? And what about the new 2018 Expedition; better to wait for the 2018? Is it that much different/better then the 2017?
3.5 all day baby. Love my Platinum FX4 ECOOBOOOOST. Its nicer than my Beamer!
I have a 09 with a 5.4 and I love it.
Thank you this helped very much!!! Do 2019 update
V8!! Won't struggle! Sounds great! Pride! America! Power! Reliable! Just feels right in a half ton!!
What about a diesel, I would love to see a small diesel in a 150, they could probably set one up to get 30-35 mpg.
+C Smith Coming soon 😏
Great.
C Smith in the plans for 2018 6 clyinder from Volvo will put out over 200 plus HP and close to 400lbs of torque
Will be great for towing and fuel mileage aimed at the eco diesel in the RAM 1500
that's a great recap on different models and engine packages, but for me I shop trucks and choose trucks with the least repair instances, so which one sees the dealer mechanics the least? Is it 2.7 Ecoboot, or the 5.0 V8? I don't want to pay $40,000 for a truck+$1,000 +$1,000 +$1,000 +$1,000 +$1,000 + $1,000 every time there's a breakdown.
The 5.0 will outlast the ecoboost
Some of that perceived reliability eh?
Not really the 5.0 has its own list of issues… like it or not the 2.7 is king… its build way stronger then the other two options
I went 3.5 with the 302 chrome package. I get compliments everyday about how handsome it is. It is handsome, with balls too...damn near 400 HP!
Got the same one in Black!
Why don't these guys ever poll Ford mechanics and ask him which engine they'd buy? They're the ones that have to fix them.
+Shane Bigler that's a really good idea!
Shane Bigler th-cam.com/video/9nUCx5IQZro/w-d-xo.html They did just go to this link.
As a Ford technician I picked the 2.7l.
Just bought my 2020 5.0 ! 👍🏽👍🏽🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸
the way he sounds when he says "COMBINED"
XLT Extended Cab long wheelbase with a 5.0 and 10 speed Trans. Thats what I'm waiting for so I can put a slide in Truck Camper on it. Sold my 2011 F250 Diesel. Emissions controls were a problem.
5.0 ftw!!!

I have to say Ford is getting better and better. They released a lot of good cars 2015/2016.
Actually I wouldn't mind the sound of the V6. Tbh I prefer
the sound of smooth engines over a V8. But I6 and especially Porsche's F6 are awesome!
I still wouldn't mind the EcoBoost V6 though^^
Anyways nice video, as always. ;)
Oniix ™ who prefers a v6 moron
Oniix ™ I'm just ganna hate because why do you prefer a v6 ? I understand it's faster but you said. You prefer a v6 in general. Suck it
Oniix ™ that comeback was awful. Maybe one day you'll grow some balls and drive a v8. But I gusse if your into the xxx lawn more sounds. Than just keep preferring a v6
johnny miller Yours was even worse but that's not the point.
Anyways you're definitly not in the position to say I should grow some balls lol
It doesn't seem like you're pretty intelligent either...
Can you guys do an updated video just like this but with the 2020 engine choices?
