Yamaha VSTAR 1100 Disassembly with Carb Removal for General Maintenance

  • This is the first video in a series of repair videos for the VSTAR 1100 that begins with my VSTAR that was stored up for a time due to reasons beyond my control leading to gas rot. This is not really a big deal as it can be solved doing a comprehensive maintenance, something I do anyway on this 2001 Silverado edition.
    Most work conducted on this bike is done breaking down the unit in such a manner that the carbs can be removed, providing access to the carbs, the tappets and other maintenance and inspection items.
    This video covers these breakdown preparation actions as well is what is found along the way, so that items can be inspected and repaired in upcoming videos.

    Thank you so much for making this video. I was all ready to go dismantle my bike cause she is leaking oil/fuel from the air intake boots. But now I am second thinking it. I have some mechanical skills but don’t know if I can tackle this without screwing up my bike and it never running again. Wish I had your knowledge. Or a motorcycle buddy with the knowledge. Shops change so much and my bike just sits now. Sucks!

    I live in Germany and recently had my XVS 1100 Dragstar classic (European version of the V.Star) in the shop because live the bike in the video I had let it sit for a few years and the gas turned to slop. I had the bike towed there in order not to gunk up the fuel system with the old gas. The shop supposedly overhauled the carbs, adjusted the valves and installed a new peacock. When I picked up the bike it seemed to run pretty good, not great but good. But gradually the bike started having issues and it got to the point ( after only 600 kilometers) that I needed to drive with the choke on all the time. Long story short, i brought the bike back and explained what was happening and they told me that I was to blame because i only drove 600 kilometers in 3 months and that would cause the fuel system to gunk up again. They ended up cranking up the idle and SOLD me a can of fuel additive and told me to come back after i pushed a tank of fuel with the additive through the system. The bike still isn't running great. I would appreciate any thoughts , opinions or advice on what is going on. Thanks.

      The carbs and the complete fuel system need to be recleaned. The carbs in an ultrasonic cleaner.

    Thanks for these great videos. I have just torn removed my 04 1100 V-Star carb and in the morning will begin the process of cleaning the carburetor, change filter etc. The bike was running great a little over year ago but has been sitting (with Stabil) but unfortunately I believe gas rot has set in and I have blocked jets or something as the only way the bike idles is with full choke. I do not have a shop near me. Once I clean the carb, change the fuel filter, flush he tank etc. will the bike even run good enough/safely after cleaning (it ran great before the gas rot gumming or blocking something) to get it to a shop 40 miles away to have the carbs balanced? If not, is there a particular cheap set of balancing gauge you recommend for this one time job as my sole intention is to get the bike to good/safe running condition to sell? Thanks

    After pulling the carburetors there are two rubber boots on each one. Earlier you pulled two L shaped ones. Which one of those is usually cracked? I paid for a diagnostic check by a shop and thought they had explained it until I realized there are 4 rubber boots and the diagrams do not give a good name to designate which is which.

    Seafoam does basically nothing for carbs. I used some redline fuel system cleaner and it made a small difference, mainly in the idle. If you have blockages, it does nothing.

    Great video with all details explained. I'm not a skilled mechanic and I don't think I am able to dismantle all parts and to separate the carbs. My problem is the pilot jet which I think is clogged in the back cylinder. I have filled the tank with carb cleaning liquid without success and realize that I need to remove the carbs. Is it possible to open the cover for the float chamber only for the clogged one so that I can clean the jets for only that one and then put the carbs back without synchronize them? Björn

    • @retrotechandelectronics
      @retrotechandelectronics  5 วันที่ผ่านมา

      You will need to drill out the cap for the pilot and replace the oring. The carbs must be removed and disassembled properly.

  • @albertcampos959
    @albertcampos959 ปีที่แล้ว

    Now syncing is not necessary unless the bike was not running right before. My understanding is that syncing is done had you purchased a brand new carb and then had to fit it to the bike. Thx!

    • @retrotechandelectronics
      @retrotechandelectronics  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@123vaw123 The shut solenoids are garbage and have no bearing on the bike. Some CARBEO crap. The TPS is a big issue, incidentally, would also cause massive problems on a fuel injected bike too..... These carbs are no big deal to maintain. The main issue is people fill them with gas and never ride them, and the gas rots in the carbs. You will find FI does the same thing, just much more expensive to repair.
