Great breakdown and video. I appreciate you including the rotational exercise you do as well! Honestly, more videos (in the community in general) on shooting specific muscle building would be of benefit! All the technique in the world is only going so far without the muscles to back it up. It also clued me in to why, as I started working on the "pull in wrister" (your 3rd shot) why my slap shot started to suffer. I was practicing getting my hands out in front of me so much, that I am getting them too far out in front on my slappers now.
@@beerleaguebumhockeyreviews indeed. Goes back to the flex/strength discussion we were having on your other vid. I am seeing benefits from just working on grip strength (doing hand squeezes while logging sofa time). After seeing your video, I plan on rigging up some resistance bands to add rotational strength reps to what I am already doing.
This was really useful, thank you. I like the way you explain things in a really practical way. I'll have to try that half slapper (though my regular slap shot is pretty terrible). I've been trying to do a half snapper, which is a bit similar. I thought that the full snap shot was too hard technique wise. So I skate forward, push the puck a little to get it moving and then try to snap / flex the stick on the ice a few inches in front of the puck to get a snap shot off. That gives me a vastly better shot than my dumpster fire full snap shots. I would like to do a full snap shot at some point, but I failed so many times (even with a shooting coach). So this half-snapper (I don't know a better name) restores a little confidence. I also get a lot more power practicing shots while skating forward / pushing the puck forward, as you explained in the video. And that is also way more realistic and game-like than shooting stationary. That thing about doing forearm wrist curls is also a great idea. I haven't done much of that and maybe I could do it at home with very light dumbbells. I have a really bad habit of not gripping the stick tight which also causes problems and is hard for a coach to see. I also don't grip dumbbells hard in the gym, which my trainer keeps telling me is important. Universal bad habit. Anyways, thanks again. That was a very interesting video that generated some thought.
Hey! appreciate this feedback. I’m glad it helped and gave you some ideas and stuff to work on. You will be surpised if you do some dumbbell stuff at home like you said how fast your shot will improve.!
Just picked up a Warrior Alpha Pro ($145 on sideline swap, what a deal!) due to your recommendation and wow am I blown away. Maybe I've just gotten more power since using a mid flex stick, but for the last season I've used a Trigger 6 Pro (also another sideline swap deal) and liked it a lot, but my gosh the release on the Alpha pro is unbelievable. such little effort to get so much power. Going to be hard going back to a low kick stick now lol. Just wanted to drop a line and thank you for your stick reviews and for this video as well.
This channels gold bro. You know your stuff. Give it time and one of your vids will catch fire. Hockey is just not the biggest crowd on YT. look at hockey tutorial they’ve been doing vids for over a decade and haven’t broke 200k. Keep at it for the beginner you’re giving good explanations.. for example the snapshot.. it really is a difficult technical shot that does not feel natural if you haven’t been practicing since you were young.
for your slappers it might be more effective to keep the height of your shots 6 or 8 inches off the ice. i know it's only beer league but the reason pro players keep their clappers low is because when the puck goes higher in the air it loses a significant amount of velocity and also from the blue line it's harder to track if it's down low with all the sticks and legs in the lanes
That’s what my half snapper is for. Dunno if you watch my videos but I score on slappers all the time so it’s pretty effective whichever I use. This is for beer leaguers hence the title nhl is never compatible to my content. The idea is what I’d most effective for beer league. My half slapper which I go over heavily in this video i use all the time so yep super effective
Nice video as always! This is a tough topic for beer leaguers. All of this stuff requires practice, which is where most of these jokers lose interest. Lol. You should’ve included some sort of intricate system of pulleys on your stick that automatically pours beer into their mouths to keep them focused. 🍺
great snap shot. i've really got to develop one as i haven't played slappers for years now. my wrist shot is good, but a knee high snapper would be great to develop.
It’s such a consistent shot for us rec/beer league guys. Everytime I show someone how I shoot they start doing it and instantly get more Goals. Keep on it!
Great video, I've been shooting a lot on the pad at home 100% agree the toe drag shot is harder to aim. I get really good stick flex with it but I end up shooting it wide a lot. And ya, I mostly play D but if the puck comes to me in the offensive zone, I'm putting it on net.
Great video for us rec players. For your slapper and snap/slap how far behind the puck are you trying to hit the ice? Also do you find the snap/slapper a good way to improve the full slapper?
Never thought to much I’d wear I hit but if I were to guess probably 5-6 inches. Any farther and you end up with that wierd slap hitting the puck while the stick has already recoiled on its forward flex. Understanding body weight transfer and the downward push on the snap and slap shot I put here will get you more consistent in getting the puck off hard. As you get better at this your shit will improve. You really need to drive that weight down into the stick
Justin, it's great to see you expand on some other areas of hockey. Just a quick tip on audio quality, as it's coming across as somewhat distorted. You want to check your recording levels and make sure you rarely, if ever, clip the input as it causes a distorted signal. Depending on the quality of your microphone, this is even more important as high-end microphones has better signal/noise ratio (S/N). You then want to adjust the final volume during editing. Btw. managed to score another batch of goals during this weekend's game with the FT5Pro; great stick. I heard the ASV Pro stick comes with an even softer blande than the FT5P which is kind of disheartening, but we'll see :)
Thanks anders. One crappy thing I noticed is it sounds different on my Mac than once it’s a file on TH-cam. Kinda a pain in the ass. I’ll see if I can mess around with it and see what best outcome is
Excellent Video! I think its awesome to talk about what shots you actually end up using the most in a game. Even including ones that are not as frequent but still come up is really good. I think people still just gravitate towards shots they simply "feel good" doing. Regardless of the shot that works best in that situation. My wrister is probably my best shot (mainly because its the one I've practiced the most but as center, I use it the least in actually games). Wristers just take more time for me to get off accurately. My Snapper and Backhand shot need some work so that's where I focus practice on now. Your snapper breakdown/explanation is perfect. I think the quick start up and strong follow through is what makes that shot work so well. Snap shots could also basically be one-timers if the pass is there lol. 2 Quick questions: How do you decide what height to cut down your stick to? Your stick flex and kick point videos have helped me a ton in figuring out what I like to use. Mid/hybrid 80 flex. Ive got an AS2 pro and an LX pro (actually got a NonGrip!) (I wanna try a 75 or 77 soon) Should I pick up used FT4 Pro Shin guards for the new season? Thoughts? Thanks man.
Hey! Thank you I’m glad you liked it. It’s funny you mention back hand see it’s all in how you’re own game is. I back hand once a year lol. I should work on it! I loved the ft4 shins. You will be happy. I’m terms of stick length for me that was a trail and error. I really like a heavier flex ( 87,85) on my mid kicks with a long stick. Just so much torque. I’m a shooter so I tailored that to my game. I couldn’t use a short stick because I’m not a stick handler and my shot would suffer in terms of how I shoot, so for stick length it’s supper important to tailor to your game style then you have to tweak your flex
Since i saw this video, i've been doing that straight cord exercice. I've been scoring alot since! I also lowered my sharpening cut fron 7/16 to 1/2 because my joints are starting to give up. Less stress on the knees and easier transition foward/reverse vise versa. Thanks bud. Small details makes the difference at the end. Instead of the P30/P14 what do you use now? I just watched your slap shot slow mow , correct me if I'm wrong. It's look like your top hand changing a grip on the stick or you just twisting your wrist so blade is facing the ice ?
I don’t grip my stick until I’m happy with hand placement as I wind up. As I’m coming down I may slide a bit and grip when I’m happy with hand placement. However I do ensure the blade is placed properly as well. You want it to coddle the puck with the puck and not be open to the outside
