This is great. Was just helping someone with this the other day, it was hard for them to understand the “hands away from body” aspect. What helped was filming them and reviewing the film with them. That recording helped them improve more in that instant than in the previous 30! As always, great content!
Same thing when I’m working with players. I always record in slow motion and show them. They always think they’re doing it, then they see themselves on video and say “ohhhhh”
@@CoachJeremy exactly! I may not be that old, but man, how did my coaches have the patience to teach me back in the day without having access to film like we do now? It is crazy to think that, with the aid of your videos, kids/adults can: (1) watch this video, (2) film themselves using their phone working on their shot, and (3) watch themselves back on their phone and compare to your video in (pretty much) real time.
For other coaches: I keep an old phone and use a cheap tripod on ice. If it gets hit by a puck, whatever. It films great and you can watch the video back right away.
@@jorach that’s a great idea! I actually just bought a GoPro on super sale (GoPro Hero 8), and tested it out over the weekend. It works great for recording, but I think I am missing the ability to review on the ice that I had with a phone. I think I will just use it to make some instructional videos on my channel, rather than use the GoPro as a training tool.
There's a lot of subtle dynamics and motor skills involved in generating power in shots, it's much more a techinque thing than a strength thing. But the thing is that it takes tons of repetition and tons of practice to "get it", there's no easy & fast way around it. But once you do the work and learn how to shoot, it's like riding a bike so it is a skill forever. If there's outside rinks in your area, that's where you will learn the most individually. In practice you have a very limited time for honing individual skills, but in the outside rink you have basically unlimited time to do whatever you want to. So if there's an outside rink in your area, you should spend as much time as possible and have fun. It really pays off, just ask any of the best players in the NHL. 👍
The tip about pulling the puck into your body also having the effect of forcing your hand away from your body was clutch. I have been treating those as two different motions (essentially) ... pushing my hands out, then pulling the puck in. Now, I can just pull the puck in and release. Also, Biosteel is the real deal. I use it for prehydrating about 1 ~ 2 hours before a game. I find I am able to skate harder for longer with less fatigue, quicker recovery, and less overheating.
@@kingblox3731 "work better" is subjective. I can say it's a better product. Gatorade is basically salt and a lot of sugar. Biosteel has vitamins and minerals added, and no caffiene. Biosteel also doesn't contain sugar (compared to 35g in Gatorade). It uses 5 types of electrolytes compared to 2 in Gatorade.
Great video the wrist shot when I first learned it as a kid I sucked and it was back in the old wood stick days, but my coach when I was about 10 explained it very similar he told us to start with the puck away and pull it in while keeping our other hand low and away from the body. It wasn’t until I was about 13 tho I figured out by myself from practicing on the drive way with a piece of sheet metal to simulate ice, how to actually take a hard shot. If only the internet was around I coulda been Gretzky. This video explains it perfect.
Luckily I was able to develop a good wrist shot 1st year of squirts...but like u that was w my old Titan wood stick. Learning on these composites was weird, finding the right flex took time. I'm 145 and I use a 55, I practice constantly and finally developed that quick release accurate af wrist shot. @ YT I wish it was around in the 80s 😂 ur right

The double punch reminds me of the 1-2 technique from the book The Inner Game of Tennis by W. Timothy Gallwey. All you focus on is the 1-2. In tennis, it would be 1) the ball hitting the court and 2) the racket hitting the ball.
I "quietly" said "Punch, Punch" while sending one in from the point last weekend. Absolutely worked well! Don't think the attacking forward heard me as I was trying to say it in my head and to myself??? Either way, the goalie barely got a pad on it and my forward had an easy tip-in.Great Tip! (twss)
A good tip for any level is to use a PVC pipe in ur bottom hand. Prevents u from overgripping. Or get a Slick Mitt for same effect w more functionality.
I like your videos. I think they’re great. My problem is, as a “late bloomer “, I can do these drills on dry land on my feet, but on skates, on ice, balance becomes a real problem. Any suggestions? I’m an old guy who started hockey when I was 54. I can skate fairly well but my shot is not good.
Going to stick and puck in the morning and this video is my bible until I fall asleep lol. Every time I think I’m doing some improvements I watch a video or read a post and realize my top reverts to just going along for the ride with my bottom hand forcing it. Driving these tips into my dome and will update in the morning 🍺
@@howtohockeytraining session done and yes indeed, that double punch worked as advertised and I gained more velocity 🤙🏼 My flexing still needs improvement and I’m struggling with elevation consistency. But no longer sweeping and getting that snap motion going feels better already. And I shoot better when just launching the puck as opposed to thinking everything through
Tage Thompson gets more flex on his shot than say Auston Matthews does cuz TT is 6’7” off skates. Thompson, Shea Weber and Z Chara can hit triple digits with ease cuz they’re huge and so are their sticks.
@@axe2grind244 I get it, so the heavier you are, the more weight you can put into your stick, the more you can flex it. So, for a large person, they should be able to flex a 80 flex stick that someone who is smaller. However, if they go up in stick flex, say 90, then they won't be able to flex the 90 as much as the 80, and maybe they won't be able to flex the 90 any more than Matthews can flex his 80.
@@howtohockeytraining I have taken video, and I don't get the bow-shaped flex that NHL players get. I was told that based on my weight I could use an 85 flex, so I started there, and then went down to 75, and it worked well and gave me much more flex. This weekend tho I found a 65 flex stick and tried it out and my shot is much faster/harder. I imagine those players who get that bow-shaped stick flex must be doing something similar, no?
@@AnHourOfWolves Theyre tall therefore longer stick. Look at long drive golf competitions....they use a longer driver cuz of the increased flex. Same applies to hockey.
I keep hurting my wrists because I pull my top hand into my stomach when i shoot. I can't seem to keep it to my side but instead bring it across my front in the follow through. Definitely gonna work on this and see what happens

When you look at your shot when you do it at full speed, your top hand isn't really coming off of your body very much compared to NHL players. How do you fix this?
When i grew up i was the only lefty in the whole state of Alaska. Ok, maybe 1 out of 2. Then, out of no where, everyone switched to lefty. Right handed everything else, but played hockey lefty. I also started the long hair thing with hockey players. No one believes me, but it's true. I didn't even know who Jágr was when i was skating with a flow as a kid. I was made fun for having girls hair all through the years I played. Then all of a sudden.....
Honestly for me I had a really bad stick and it couldn’t get the shot off the ground idk if it was me or the stick but when I got a new stick my slap shot was insane idk if that’s the reason or if I was just in my head
@@idrkwhattoput I had the same thought process with my clap bomb. I thought a new stick all of a sudden elevated my shot. But what really happened was my stance, back swing and follow through improved greatly after watching Coach Jeremy’s slap shot vid.
Why are you using a right-handed shot stick if you are right handed? I thought Canadians were taught to use a left-handed stick when they are right handed. And yes I can tell from the video that you are right-handed.
I like your videos, they are funny and interesting but about the shooting, why you have no power of your shoot Jeremy is because You use only your hands and no body rotation and bad standing position. You shot from one leg, but You not at the situation You have to be only on one leg. Better to learn how to stand before shot and how to use your full body to generate more power and your hands and flex of stick are the last thing for shot. For the end and good point for better aiming is, when You finish your shot you should finish your stick in the position like you want to show where you are shooting at. The last point point you can aplicate for learning for backhand shot. best way how to practice.
This video focuses only on one part of the shot. I’ve covered everything you mention here in my 5 part series on the building blocks of shooting and have training courses and step by step training courses for it on The Pond. Everything you mention is great for power, but you can still get a lot of power with only the upper body. I’ve studied a lot of video, I just got back from the NHL combine and was shooting pucks with Bedard who has a great shot. If you watch the pros they don’t always have a “complete shot” in games With legs, body, weight transfer, rotation. Some shots are just the arms, or feet planted, inside leg. It all depends on the situation so I teach how to get a powerful and accurate shot in any situation because that’s how the game is played. No player can always deliver the perfect and most powerful shot. You take the shot you have with the time and space you have.

Shooting right handed gives me so much empathy for those who pick up hockey in adulthood - it’s so hard to learn (or re-learn) how to shoot 😂
