The only way to know why he came
back is to make him start over from the beginning. Don’t let him get his place/priority back right away. Let him start from square one, treat him like it’s the first date. No sex, no extra validation, no last minute plans. Eventually he will either get bored and disappear again or he will prove he’s changed and you guys can build a new relationship.
Totally agree with you, if you want to try again with someone then make sure they put in the same time and effort as you. If they really want to be with you they will do it, if after a few weeks or after a month you are the one doing all the texting and calling, initiating everything, then you know the truth. There has to be compromise, equal give and take. Unfortunately, from my experience it usually is because of their ego and the relationship will fall back into the old routine or habits from before which is usually the reason why it didn't work the first time around. However, there are those few relationships where things do improve. My advice, don't spend too long waiting for this to happen, move on and find someone who will want to build with you.

@Robin D. That's the only way to do it. Unfortunately, some people tolerate being cheated on and stay in the relationship. It sucks cause at one point I loved her and thought we'd grow old together but that's just something I cannot tolerate and I left an almost 5 year relationship. Thank you for the helpful words. I ignore him because of several reasons. Need to put focus on my job, need to develop my second, private job, need time for me and my meditations. Also I don't clearly see where we going in our connection, feeling a little bit stuck and try to refresh my energy. Other and very important reason for me is that me as a woman don't wanna lead, initiate and amuse him. I like to reciprocate not pursue. Well, it depends. Some people covet that Hermes bag that is super expensive and very sought after. They put themselves on the waiting list, kiss up to sales associates, spend tons of money and finally, two years later, get offered a chance to buy the darn bag but not always in the color or texture that they wanted. I, look at that as silly. Not only am I not interested in blowing that much money on a dumb purse (status symbol my butt!) but the insane games you have to participate in, the hoops you have to jump through only to maybe get a chance to buy one! Sometimes you never get offered that chance at all no matter how many butts you’ve been kissing in that company and how many years you waited! To me it is not worth the hassle! Same with men. If they make themselves out of reach, 99.999% of the time, I will move on. I don’t want what’s in the case behind glass and barbed wire. If a man is meant to be mine, he’ll never play these games. The only times I might take him back is if he got into an accident and was in the hospital hooked up to tubes for several months, or got abducted and was held somewhere against his will.
My sweetheart is the best man on Earth. We have tried to keep value in our relationship by not ignoring each other and trying to push for better communication rather than more communication.
