Today I’m going to show you how to make a special Korean-style cornbread that I used to have when I was a kid in elementary school in Korea. The school provided this daily snack to the students just before class was dismissed. We looked forward to it every day, so I have fond childhood memories of cornbread, and of the anticipation of waiting for snack time at school!...

I use Indian Head Old Fashioned Stone Ground Yellow Corn Meal for this recipe. Check out the description box in any video and follow the link for the written recipe. Every video has a written recipe where I provide more detailed information such as ingredients, step by step directions, stories behind, photos, and tips.
      Good luck!

I used to get recipes off your website all the time for years because my mom is Korean but sadly passed away 15 years ago (last week as a matter of fact) without ever teaching me her recipes. I just discovered your YT channel today and I'm hooked! I may stay up all night catching up on all of them!!!! You remind me a lot of her, always happy and making jokes. And the accent of course. Thank you so much for sharing your recipes. 💕💕💕

I love cornbread but I don't have eaten it often cuz I don't find a really good one. Cornbread it's a emotional memory for me. My granny used to make cornbread and baked them in a clay oven so they remained fresh for a long long time. We used eat it with whipped molasses cane on it. Here where I live cornbreads are much appreciated but now they are no longer handicrafted and contains a lot of wheat flour so the corn flavor is not that evident. I loved your recipe, it is simple, visually wonderful because of its color, appetizing for its texture and very soon I will know exactly how it tastes. I intend to make this bread tomorrow because fortunately I have a cornflour package in my pantry. Thank you for this wonderful recipe that feeds not only our body but brings back so many emotions and precious memories.

Garry Perkins Sorry, I don't have it. I was just a little child and back then I was not interested in anything but eat that bread. I rebember the bread was black outside as if it as totally burned but under the crust there was a tasty and wet cornbread. I don't know why but mommy never bake that kind of cornbread.

Hey all, if you're lactose intolerant, replace the milk with coconut milk and replace the butter with oil (I used coconut oil instead of vegetable oil for the recipe and to oil the pan). Came out perfect! I used the brown coconut kind of oil so that the coconut flavor doesn't come out in the cornbread. If you only have young coconut oil and/or milk, you'll taste the coconut. It's still amazingly tasty though. Thank you Maangchi! This was delicious!

i love the fact that BREAD in Korea is ppang ... it makes me realize that the whole earth and all its peoples and countries and languages are TOTALLY the SAME. Bread -- pan (Spanish), pain (French), pane (italian), pa (Catalan), pâine (Romanian) ... and it goes on and on in every language anyone can figure words out, based upon sentence context. I love it!

Not all just the most with latin origin - In Greek we say ψωμί read as : psaumi /psomi, meaning bread . This type of cornbread we name it bobota (though not sure if it's a Greek origin word ) but it was the main bread/cake/dessert during world wars, referred to as the"bread of the poor" !! Variations are with cheese/salty or with sweet with honey and raisins .

This is awesome! We make a version of cornbread here in Atlanta, Georgia, USA. Everyone down here eats this all the time and it's really cool to see that all the way across the world, people are eating something incredibly similar! We never make it without our 100 year old cast iron skillet though 😺 Love you Maangchi!

Who knew ( probably many) knew Koreans made cornbread in Korea!!! I always thought it was an American adaptation by some British immigrant in the beginning. Lol I d love to hear more about the true history of language and food, like where and when India started cooking with curry, I always thought that was an India thing that others copied. ❤️ I love that she adds all the translations. I d love to make her the all BUTTER recipe. She seems like such a sweet person. I can't wait to try this gluten free recipe. Very clean cuts to serve to company. She could add no-flour or gluten free to her title and increase her viewers.

    Good morning everybody!
Many people said that they already miss my old measuring spoons! so funny!! : ) But I feel warm because I think you guys and me are connected to each other even via my measuring spoons!
I'm usually not a keeper but this time I should change my mind to keep them for a while for you guys. Until when? Until I change my mind again. The bottoms of each spoon is not smooth and they look a little sticky because I wash them with my dishwasher.

For years I have been trying to get this consistency when I make a cornbread but never did. I tried this recipe and it worked. However, I did not have the brand of cornmeal you suggested but used a very fine grain cornmeal. I also had to put in extra milk to get it to the consistency you had. It worked though. I also added a little vanilla and nutmeg to kick it up a notch. Thanks Maangi.

Whoa, it's really a small world! We here in the Southern states eat cornbread too! Its part of foods we call "Soul Food". The cornbread that I'm used to is not sweet at all and is traditionally made in a cast iron skillet. For some reason, store brands of cornbread mix( read Jiffy) are really sweet. Its served with literally anything like chicken, meatloaf, beef stew, chili, etc.Anyway, I this recipe looks good and I will try it out. +Maangchi I am of Creole Decent ( Native American, French Etc.) and this is at least 7th recipe very similar or identical to some of our southern recipes. It is how I found your channel. I was looking for a recipe my mom used to make and I forgot a few ingredients. So I look them up on you tube and I see your recipes. I realize they were similar but with more healthy ingredients in some. Instead of using milk we use buttermilk and instead of baking powder we use all purpose flour. I try it your way and I like the yours better because it is more healthy. Thank you for bringing such beautiful memories of home back to me. Now I can share with my children, keeping family recipes going. I am now older and have a few health issues such as diabetes. As I grow older and being born in Michigan not Louisiana as my sisters, I forget some traditional recipes. My Husband is Italian and learning new recipes, I forgot how to cook some childhood recipes. Your funny and me and my family watch you often. I had forgotten at times how to enjoy cooking and how to make it a family fun event. Again Thank you for the reminder. We love you and can not wait to watch your new videos.

+Maangchi All over the southern US cornbread and other foods from cornmeal are traditional. One thing you can do to get a nice crust on the outside of your cornbread is to heat the pan with the butter in the oven before you pour in the mix. Don't let the butter burn just get it melted and hot. It will make a crunchy yummy crust on the outside of the soft bread. You could also take your mixture and fry it like a pancake. My mother loves these, we call them hoe cakes.

I Am not a kitchen person but I Love to eat.making me lost inside a kitchen and makes all the cooking utensils ran away literally from me makes me lost all interest in cooking.but after viewing ur posts, the twisted donuts and cornbread,I find my interest in cooking perks up.U made it so simple and fun! Plus no special cookery equipments that are so intimidating! Thank u and I will definitely try this two recipes on my next weekend holiday.

I like to make this also, but I add a can of corn or a cup of frozen corn to it to make it even more corn flavor! Sometime I even add a can of corn and a can of creamed corn. I love it too.

Oh! THANK YOU!!!! :D My mum talked about eating the EXACT SAME corn bread at her school when I was growing up. She said it was not long after the Korean war had ended and children were starving. So many kids coming to school minus lunches...and so, to feed the kids, with the corn meal donations from the US, these breads were made and distributed. Mum was from a relatively wealthy family, so she always had lunch...yet she said she was most happy when she could swap her lunch for these corn breads&eat them instead, like most of her classmates. It happened so long ago yet, she remembers eating these corn bread like it was yesterday. I ALWAYS wanted to make some for her, but I was never sure of the recipe. Now I can make some for her when I go to visit her in few weeks. She will be so happy!!! Can't wait! THANK YOU SO MUCH!!!

I love this video! I baked a pan of corn bread last night, using this recipe with one extra table spoon of sugar (Coz I like it sweet) and it turned out to be so good! Even though it was my very first time baking corn bread, was super easy, quick and yummy. I will definitely bake it more often. Thank you!

You should try cornbread made with buttermilk. My grandma made hers that way. She also used white cornmeal instead of the yellow. She would put her cast iron skillet with the oil in it in the oven to preheat the pan. When you put in the batter it sizzles. It makes the bottom crust crunchy. So many good cornbread memories. If you want you can also put chopped jalapeños in your batter for Mexican style cornbread.

I use white cornmeal, half buttermilk/half milk. No sugar. I mix everything but the milk and let it sit while my cast iron skillet heats with a couple tablespoons of oil. When my skillet is screaming hot, I add the milk and pour into the skillet, it hisses. Then you get a nice crunchy crust, super moist interior and so delicious. Great with so many meals.
