    1 FabricNano
    2 Empire Building Challenge
    3 Making electricity from human-powered steps
    4 Grow wood in a lab
    5 Making affordable fashion sustainable
    6 NCAVES, environmental and ecosystem accounting
    7 InVest has created a set of modelling tools
    8 Costa Rica reversed deforestation
    Before we waste our time and energy let's go through this quick checklist -
    Is it solving the right problem?
    Is it scientifically viable? Does it obey the known laws of physics?
    Is it technologically viable? Is there a demonstration project working today?
    Is it scalable? Are there resources available for everybody in the world to do this?
    Is it resources viable? Is there a sustainable supply of minerals available?
    Is it land a viable? Is there enough space available without taking away from a forest or agricultural land?
    Is it politically viable? Can it be made acceptable to the general population?
    Links to the original projects would be useful for fact checking
    Thanks

    Circular economy achieved through Cradle to Cradle Certified products made with safe and healthy chemicals and designed for disassembly...all powered by renewably powered electricity...is a game changer that needs rapid escalation throughout our global economy.

    We can truly embrace sustainability by cutting down on mass consumption, avoiding the constant upgrade to new smartphones every two years, choosing locally sourced fruits over those shipped thousands of kilometers on container ships, and refraining from frequent air travel.

    All that water in California could be put to good use as any other stormwater.
    Canals coast to coast. Biofuel farms, fish farms, shrimp farms, shellfish farms, hydroponic farms, fruit tree farms, and nuts, wineries, hemp farms for textiles and bioplastics, animal husbandry, Drainage, reservoirs, canals, pumps, water reclamation, energy storage with dams, mechanical and electric wind turbines to pump water, recreation, distribution of water coast to coast, freight distribution, water distribution with the canals. You have nothing without water 💦. That's a lot of jobs and an unimaginable amount of work and labor. Every ancient civilization built its economy and huge cities around rivers and irrigation.

      Who did I piss off? The Railroads, oil industry, republicans? We are going to need 10's of millions of immigrants and climate change refugees to build all that and all going to need jobs.

    Impressive overview of sustainable initiatives across sectors! The focus on ethical environmental accounting and conservation efforts highlights the comprehensive strategies needed to achieve a sustainable economy.

    Couldn't make it past #3 it clearly shows no one with any knowledge in carbon emissions ever verified any of those ideas.
    Energy harvesting has its place, but in some specific niche applications. The amount of energy you could pull from those floor panels would never exceed energy required to manufacture them in a first place!

    • @shyft09
      @shyft09 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Agree, these are mostly interesting ideas that are highly unlikely to have much of an impact

      "Partner Content" it's actually an advert for select Lombard Odier investments

    • @Bigobe244
      @Bigobe244 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Exactly. Another example of the shortfall of engineers in solutions. They only address a handful of dimensions with huge embodied carbon associated with upscale and distribution of upscale. Honestly, let's train them to environmentally engineer social solutions !

      Absolutely agree, people greenwash themselves for hope, without running mass balances. A video with a lot of nice words, some genuinely good Innovations though

    this video is such a meme, none of these other than maybe the refitting of old sky scrapers will have an impact

    • @shyft09
      @shyft09 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Because it's an advert for Lombard Odier investments, see "Partner Content" and the investment warning in the intro. I'm extremely disappointed with the FT for this. I also didn't realise I was watching an advert, until I rewatched because the ideas seemed so stupid

      @shyft09 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Please don't share this with your students. It's an advert for some companies that presumably Lombard Odier Asset Management have invested in. See "Partner Content" and the warning about investment advice in the intro
