Hey everyone, I made another American Football analysis video. This time, on the song 'The Summer Ends'. Check it out here: th-cam.com/video/b1a84fmr178/w-d-xo.html
Trevor Wong fwiw I really appreciate it. Lots of emo musicians don’t actually understand the theory behind what they’re doing and why, and since my theory is better than my ear, this really helps me grasp a lot more what’s going on without sitting down to a song myself.
When you can only play simple chords and bare minimum pentatonics yet due to your taste in music youtube recommends things light years beyond your compression
I've learned more music theory exploring this genre than any other. I also went years without practicing scales patterns and I don't know why because now I know 4 scale patterns each for minor and major that I can take basically anywhere on the fretboard. This has also led to me being able to play in any key I want. Which has also led to me being able to figure out the notes of any key by playing the scale pattern starting from the root note if said key. Which has also enabled me to sit down and figure out every note in every key, along with every chord in every key (with the help of the major/minor formula of course. If you know ya know) without using the internet. It's life changing to say the least. With 5 minutes a pencil and some paper I can write songs in any key I want. Only playing metal wouldn't have gotten me to that point. It really is life changing to understand that kinda stuff
Haha, hey if you're confused on some of the terminology then I recommend checking out this video I made on music theory jargon. th-cam.com/video/mspx4rn_qeg/w-d-xo.html
There's a youtube channel called "Let's Talk About Math Rock" that does great tutorials on this style! I recently bought his e-book and it's a pretty good starting point at only 5 dollars!
Move to northern Illinois, start smoking newports, get really sad during the winters, drive around dying towns aimlessly, search for meaning, fail, buy a guitar from a guy named sammy, play it sometimes.
Hey Paul, I think the best place to start is to start learning scales. Try and experiment with writing stuff with the scales though, rather than just playing the patterns up and down. It's all about outlining the note choices you want to use, while experimenting and crafting from within that (i.e, doing your best to write riffs / create chords, etc). Also focus on learning a lot of chords and how to use them. If you need a primer on some basic theory language, check out this video here th-cam.com/video/mspx4rn_qeg/w-d-xo.html. Also, I've got tons of videos on chord voicings which you can use to plug in the information that I talk about in that previous video.
Dude honestly, you are probably my favorite TH-camr right now. Your content is so insightful and it’s helping me a lot in my own guitar playing. I haven’t found anyone else making such high-quality education content for this type of music, so I really have to thank you!
i watched your vids like a year ago and was so frustrated because i didnt understand all the terminology but now the breakdown is so helpful! really well made, thank you! ^_^
I literally don't even know how to play guitar or read sheet music. I play piano by wrote. I just wanted a nerd to talk American football to me so I feel at home.
Yeah, I was just trying to get the note choices, rather than the authenticity of the tuning. It affects the performance a little bit, but isn't super necessary for the actual harmonic analysis. The main thing is just getting the pitches so that they can be displayed in the notated score
@@augustrush6957 You know Nick or just a big fan? Because if it's the latter, same, but if it's the former, tell him to apologize for all the stuff he did so we can have a Merchant Ships reunion, please!
Hey thanks! I just released a new video today analyzing the harmony of "The Summer Ends". Hopefully you can check it out! th-cam.com/video/b1a84fmr178/w-d-xo.html
Theory is jargon heavy for sure. If it helps, maybe check out this video I made on some basic theory terminology. After watching this, digesting an analysis video like this one might be easier. th-cam.com/video/mspx4rn_qeg/w-d-xo.html
I feel so smart watching this video and yet I have no idea what he's talking about. In reality I'm just hoping my wife overhears it and thinks I understand.
The Lydian predominant is what further created the 4-6-5 progression that defined the movement. It’s hard not to hear Lydian as the main predecessor to Midwest emo from here
Excuse me Trevor. But you wrote the song in 12:4 @ 1:49. Although I don't necessarily think that's wrong as it does work when counting the guitar parts. With the drums and bass and melody the song is clearly in 6:4
have you ever played the affinity squier tele? looks very similar to yours and plays great. just curious. i use mine in this video here th-cam.com/video/ptSmrtEZS78/w-d-xo.html
In this case, it's more just a matter of touch. I'm not really using all too fancy a set up. I just try and work a lot on trying to give every note it's full value. Practice slow and really make sure that you're getting each note as clean as possible. That should do wonders for your tone, no amps or effects involved!
Personally I think looking at music like this almost sterilises it. Surely the band just made this riff because it sounds so flipping good? Still, I can't deny this is very in depth so someone who is into this level of musical detail and loves this brilliant song, will enjoy it immensely.
I could see that. Theory is kind of like lifting the curtain up in some way. Though for myself, I think it really helps me appreciate something more as it gives me a language to be able to understand my appreciation of the music. To me, it's amazing that they made the choices that they did, whether they thought about it with theory or not. And it's super cool to know that, if I want to get that kind of sound for myself, this is the place to start theory and note choice wise.
It's pretty wild how obsessed people have become with American Football. It's a good album but there's more out there from that time period and prior to that is just as good. Constantly trying to recreate the sound/style of their first album just dilutes what made it good in the first place. Not knocking your video, just the obsession that some people have with it. Hopefully this doesn't come off as too harsh.
Honestly, off the top of my head, I can't tell a lot of bands who really sound like AF. I mean, I see a lot more bands trying to emulate the standard "midwest emo" sound, which is different in my perception. This is a controversial issue, but I'll try to pin it down quickly : American Football is so different from the other "midwest emo" bands that it seems unlogical to me that they would fall under the same category ; I feel like it lacks the post-hardcore influence that pervades all the others "midwest emo" bands. American Football is about melodic layers, contrapuntal style, open tunings, irregural meters ; totally different from the distorted chords, screamed vocals and "wall of sound" style you find in Sunny Day Real Estate or Mineral, for instance. So why gathering them in the same genre, for god's sake ? Buuut that's just my 2 cents you know.

When you’re getting a masters in music theory and have to make a video presentation and also are an emo kid.
Haha, yeah I've definitely noticed there's a link between a presentation I'd make for college music theory and my emo analysis stuff

Can't we just let things be. Do we have to 'break down' and 'analyze' and 'pick apart' and 'ruin' everything
