      Ford made a real mistake installing the type of leather they did in the King Ranch version. It absorbs dirt and oils like a sponge.

    Also a good point is to keep it as wet as possible without dripping everywhere to reduce friction and optimize cleaning power by keeping the desired cleaner on the surface of the magic eraser instead of soaking into the pores of it.

    Awesome video!! Test in an inconspicuous spot first to see if the panel has been re-dyed. It can be hard to tell as sometimes it can be done from factory. Keep old magic erasers soaking as they are far less aggressive. Once done this way and protected.. only maintenance cleaning is needed moving forward. APC may not be needed with the ME. Sometimes warm water is enough. Cheers!!

      Both of you don't truly understand the materials. If you use a foam Polishing pad with machine force you probably think hey that's OK. But a magic eraser that loses abrasiveness as it absorbs more liquid isnt, you gotta stop believing everything you hear 😂😂 or this guy who has been in the biz for years and used them for years and hes wrong? . It's funny how you say he is wrong. I did a video that would prove you wrong in the first breath. In fact, this video proves you wrong in its first breath. So, there's that. SMH

Melamine foam is produced exclusively by BASF, they make white foam for cleaning supply companies and grey foam for industrial sound proofing. They are exactly the same stuff! Grey is the natural color of the material so it will not discolor white leather for example. P.S. I subscribed because you remind me of the guy in The Goldbergs ;)

    • @Jones4Leather
      @Jones4Leather 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I am a leather repair pro. Ink migrates easily down into the color coating. If it is fresh, use alcohol on a q-tip and very gently scrub. This dissolves the color a little, so you remove the color that has absorbed the ink. Change q-tips often as they get dirty. If you remove all the color, contact a leather recoloring pro.

    • @Jones4Leather
      @Jones4Leather 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I am a leather repair pro. This happens because the Magic Eraser is a very fine abrasive with a little cleaning agent added (pH 8 to 10) that is not safe for leather (pH 4.5). It works not by cleaning, but by fine sanding. Use a good leather cleaner and an exfoliating glove. Best is made by ADV Leather (repair pros who make their own products). Order directly from them: www.advleather.com/product-list.html Not cheap, but concentrated and a little goes a long way. You get what you pay for. Apply it and leave for 10 minutes while you move on to other areas. This is when the cleaning happens. Give it a a little time and it does an amazing job of releasing the dirt. Scrub with a damp exfoliating glove to pull maximum dirt off and pull it out of the grain. Repeat once if needed. Any dirt left is inside the finish and not removable unless you strip the finish and reapply the clear top coat or reapply the entire color coating. You can also get DIY recoloring materials from ADV Leather. They can custom-match your color. Or contact a leather repair pro locally.

    • @Jones4Leather
      @Jones4Leather 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Melamine is a stripper, not a cleaner. Some leather has a 2-tone color and the top color is translucent, very thin, so color can change when stripped / worn off. If the color was already worn, it may have been thinner in place. Or the leather fibers the color is attached to may be starting to break off at the surface. This is a common issue with leather as it ages. Deterioration speeds up when leather has been in the sun (UV and heat), and has been used a lot. I am a leather repair pro. Before I recolor leather, I test the finish strength by rubbing masking tape on and ripping it off. If more than a few specks come off, the fibers are getting weak.

    Love this channel but I tried this on my Acura MDX and used gentle pressure while it was working great it did tear the passenger seat. My car has heated seats with little holes and it caused a tear bummer. It did clean the plastics like where ur feet step on the car nicely and the door jams. So while good to the eye I would beware using this technique

    • @Jones4Leather
      @Jones4Leather 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I am a leather repair pro. The tearing was not caused by cleaning. Leather is as strong as steel by weight when new. Your heated seats and the perforations contribute to significant moisture loss leading to weakening in a relatively short time. That results in brittle leather micro-fibrils, even while the leather feels supple. They begin to age faster, breaking like dry grass, instead of bending. Leather is so dense that you may not notice the changes, but when challenged in a small area, it fails. I have seen leather that looked perfect, but had been dry too long, tear open from simply removing masking tape. Plus, in the front seat, UV light is able to destroy leather fibers faster in perforated leather because it can shine directly onto the raw leather in each hole. UV will harm leather even when it has the opaque color coating, which is tough, but thin enough that some UV penetrates.

    • @Jones4Leather
      @Jones4Leather 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@grantp4022 Re: pH range safe for leather. It has to be very close to 4.5. Even 5 will accelerate deterioration and 6 can rot leather in a short time. As you may know, pH changes by a factor of 10x for each number on the scale. Medications like blood thinners can raise body oil pH to 6 and cause a rapid increase in deterioration. People's body oils range from about 4.5 to 6. Most strong cleaning solutions for car and home are around 9 to 11. Approx 25% of the population is 4.5 to 5 and that has little to no visible effect on leather strength. But 75% are 5 to 6 and do cause damage. This accelerates as more oils are absorbed and spread out within the leather and padding / foam below. Every drop continues causing damage so the concentration increases at the contact point and a larger area weakens as the oils migrate.

      From what I have seen is that with a light enough touch it can be alot less abrasive than the other tools like hard bristled brushes can do...I am wondering since I have seen generic and regular erasers mr clean etc do I need to worry about any darker or black leather seats will it leave a light residue from the color bleeding from eraser? I thought it left whitish from eraser?

    • @Jones4Leather
      @Jones4Leather 4 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      @@wilsonautodetailing I am a leather repair pro. A melamine pad (Magic Eraser) is an abrasive that ALWAYS removes some clear top coat. It does not clean (lift soil), it strips the protective resin layer. Color is sprayed on in layers. The top coat is denser, just like on the clear coat on paint on the body. But it is the thinnest layer, so you will remove it completely very easily using any abrasive. It's made just to resist wear from clothing. Please also consider that Superclean has a pH of 12.5 to 13.8 = bleach and oven cleaner (see MSDS www.superclean.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/10/2016-SuperClean-Degreaser-SDS-v2.0.pdf). You are introducing a harsh, destructive chemistry thru cracks, stitch holes and the billions of micro-pores in the resin of the protective finish. Water beads up but some goes directly through when you wipe or scrub. Leather pH is 4.5 and any mis-match, high or low, is destructive. Superclean is 500 million to 500 billion x more basic than the leather. This remains true even when diluted. The cleaner that is absorbed remains inside the leather and continues destroying leather fibers forever. So you are aging it faster, esp in the weakest areas.

    • @Jones4Leather
      @Jones4Leather 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Mikehunt2u The best method is use a cleaner made for upholstery leather (NOT saddle soap) and an exfoliating glove to scrub safely. The best cleaner I know of is made by a small company, ADV Leather and sold only online directly from them. advleather.com/product-list.html
      Apply the cleaner with a soft cloth. Let it sit for 10 min. Use a damp exfoliating glove ($2 at pharmacy) to scrub dirt out of grain texture. Moisten a little if cleaner has dried, but just enough to soften. Wipe off and repeat if needed. Let the area dry for a few minutes be for repeat to avoid soaking leather below the color coating. You can use a blow drier on high heat to speed drying. Blow ACROSS, not straight at the surface. If surface feels sticky, use a damp cloth to remover residue. Any soil left after 2 tries is permanent, but can be concealed with recoloring. Talk to ADV Leather about their DIY recoloring kits. Don't steam - high heat drives water out of leather. If the temp is too high for your skin, it's too high for leather.

    Good video - I would say cleaning 'leather' seats in vehicles is multi-step - your first step did a great job - nexttt step would be to apply a premium product for leather such as Lithium Elixirs Leather Love - vehicle leather is heavily treated, completely opposite of top-of-the-line full aniline leather - two different worlds - vehicle leather thus needs different products to restore - general tip - never buy vehicle with light colored leather - exactly what your video shows occurs - nasty, dirty cracking over time which looks really bad - I always go dark/black for vehicle leather

    Not a fair test of pad, since you used degreaser on pad. Only supposed to use water on melamine foam. A comparison using only degreaser and microfiber cloth would be more fair. A little mistake could damage car leather. Just sayin....

      A mistake in driving could cost your life, but you still drive... if the potential of something dangerous happening stops you from doing something, you would never get anything done, but like many things in the detailing world, you must let common sense lead

    SMH... A magic eraser is essentially sand paper. It may cut the time in half but you will be removing leather in the process. Invest in or rent a steam cleaner and it will take the same amount of time possibly even less and not damage your leather in the process.

    • @wilsonautodetailing
      @wilsonautodetailing  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +Travis C totally not being rude at all I promise, but what you're saying just isn't true, there is absolutely a safe way to use it and a dangerous way to use it just like anything else. But to claim that it removes the leather just simply by using it, is fallacious. Do you Detail on a professional level?

    • @travisc7506
      @travisc7506 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Wilson Auto Detailing Currently I do not detail on a professional level but I did throughout college and a for a few years after. I also experienced numerous customers come in with ruined seats because they had scrubbed it with a magic eraser. Granted in many of these cases the customer had obviously used too much pressure but the fact of the matter is the magic eraser by design is an abrasive. If someone uses a magic eraser once on their leather seats with gentle pressure and proper lubrication more then likely the seats will be fine. But continued use even with gentle pressure will eventually remove the factory coating on leather/vinyl causing it to lose fluid resistance and cause discoloration. I mean you no disrespect and from watching your videos I can see that you are a capable detailer. This is just a detailing shortcut I can't be on board with.

    Negative and no one should attempt this on your leather or vinyl. While the results are amazing to the eyes. To the untrained and in educated eye it’s fine. But what you don’t see Is the top coat being removed from the surface. So now your seats will get back to how bad they were before hand and then will need to be professionally cleaned properly and dyed by someone like me. I️ do it every week. FYI a magic eraser is basically 4000-5000 grit sandpaper... further your knowledge.

      It’s true, but it depends. Mercedes leather, it’s okay. While BMW, it took a layer of dye from my seat 12 year old leather seat. Same result on my 10 year old Lincoln leather seat. Same with Lexus Toyota. It’s just depends on how worn the leather and the car manufacturer.

      Meh! Let them ruin their leather. It’s only fair that the car they neglect for years, eventually gets the leather looked after by a pro. The next owner will love it!

    • @teejaydoyle2810
      @teejaydoyle2810 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Depends on when the vehicle was manufactured. New leathers, absolutely not. There is a top coating on the leather and this will destroy that. However, on cars pre 1990 you should be okay, but double check. Most Auto manufacturers started switching over in the 90's.

      Tyre Pierce Now as I have you as an expert:
      My steering wheel in my Mini Cooper F56 got kinda shiny.. I cleaned it several times very thoroughly but I do not get back this Matte effect it had before it got shiny... My guess is that the leather itself got shinier because of the structure getting „polished“ by the hands constantly gliding over it... the leather on the steering wheel has a very rough surface by itself so it’s not like the normal leather like the BMW M steering wheels which is very smooth.
      My question: if I carefully use a magic erase on the steering wheel, could it get completely matte again without really damaging the leather? I know that you really aren’t supposed to clean leather with a magic eraser.. but in my case it could be helpful but I’m curious to hear your opinion about it.

    Perforated leather is the worst leather in the world. It only has the strength of half of a piece of full leather and the holes end up being the exact stress points of tear failure.

    While I am a fan of your channel, I will have to say this.
    Magic Erasers, Just to clear up this BS regarding using magic erasers... they are NOT MAGIC - they are made from melamine resin. As the resin cures, it turns into foam, and its microstructure becomes almost as hard as glass - causing it to act like a SUPER-fine sandpaper...3,000-5,000 grit.
    You do NOT USE SANDPAPER to clean your vehicle. Especially automotive leather & interiors are coated in a protective polyurethane coating. It's really NOT very thick...so taking SANDPAPER to it is permanently removing the protective layer on the seats (that prevents your sweat from instantly staining it or the UV rays of the sun from instantly drying out and cracking the leather.
    SAY NO TO MAGIC ERASERS!!!

    • @wilsonautodetailing
      @wilsonautodetailing  6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Steve magic erasers don’t act as 3000 to 5000 grit, I’m not sure why detailers say that, you can call the manufacturers, it would be much more accurate to say around 7000 grit, while yes they can hurt leather, they won’t when used the right way.. I don’t know that it’s fair to say you might as well take sandpaper to the interior of your car... because you’re not. Though they are LIKE sandpaper in certain aspects, at the end of the day. It’s not sandpaper. Would you not use a brush because it has the POTENTIAL to hurt something? Or would you just use common sense. You decide
