  • Today we do something scary and cool at the same time. We will be cutting holes in the firewall to make recessed letters in the steel spelling out GTO. We will be using the Langmuir Crossfire Plasma table to cut out the letters and then get some backing sheet metal so they look embossed.

No black, stay subtle. Looks awesome! Great attention to detail.

    Amazing and creative, Mark.
Leave it all red in my opinion. Painting the inside will make it look like it was just painted on.

Super cool Mark. That had to be nerve racking. I was worried just watching. As far as painting it that's all on you. I do like the clean look without the bead rolling. I'm guessing it's plenty strong without it. Thank you for your time.

Thanks it was a struggle at times to get it lined up and cutting in the correct orientation. Yeah the 16 gauge is pretty stout stuff and the firewall really isn't that tall.

Thanks Steve. A little nerve racking but it should look great when it is all done and painted.

GUTSY move Mark! Turned out awesome! I'm doing something similar on a very small scale with the steering column to dash bracket. Probably cut in "37"... For your firewall the same color is subtle and fun to discover for a spectator at a show.

Thanks Don. I agree on the color, don't want it to me in your face obvious.

Love it. I wouldn’t highlight in black. Same color is subtle and classy.

Thanks, seems to be the consensus on the color. I really want to get that part done to see how it looks but it will have to wait...

Thanks, never seen it done like this before. Trying to be unique at a car show is getting harder and harder. Building Ruby the way I want though.

Awesome idea, never seen that done before. I vote to leave it all solid color, it will highlight the depressed letters more.

That is awesome Mark! I sure didn't think of that when you questioned your subscribers what was coming up. I guess, the only thing you could have done differently was to lay out some lines or spots on your weld locations. As far as color, I think it would look great with just one color. Well done!!

Thanks Doug. Too cocky with the spot welder is all. I agree I should have double checked and marked the locations. Next time...
Everyone seems to thinking the same on the color.

Thanks. Not a tall firewall anyways but I will have to work to make it flat and smooth.

Very cool! I really like the look of the GTO on the firewall. I’d be inclined to paint the whole thing red. As with the bead rolling, sometimes less is more.

Thanks Robert. Looks like all red is the winner. Should look really nice when it is all done. Might have to lower the engine a bit so you can see the GTO better 😄

Thanks Chris. It was nice to put one of my ideas on my own car for once. It looks awesome right now, can't wait to see how it looks painted.

what is the black glue you are using?

Ideally I would have liked to use panel adhesive but I had some 3M NVH Dampening Material 04274 in the shop so I used it. Since I could spot weld through it it felt like a good choice.
