The OLED Blade has an incredible screen but I really can’t recommend it for first person shooters. How do you feel about Razer undervolting their laptops out of the factory? Is that cheating or do you think it's a good thing to do?
undervolting should ALWAYS be done if possible. Contrary to popular belief you are not getting less performance while undervolting It is NOT the opposite of overclocking. Overclocking is increasing the frequency of the parts. Undervolting is reducing the supplied while keeping the clock speed the same. when you supply more voltage than needed the excess gets converted into unnecessary heat. We don't want that extra heat but because of the silicon lottery it makes more sense for the manufacturers to ship out the products with a higher voltage to insure that all the shipped units perform as they should.
should i undervolt my msi gs75? i read it only has one bios and its not really easy to reset it if i mess something up also generally powersettings seem to make it shut up fan noise wise but that also kills performance should i just let the lappy do its thing or is undervolting worth the risk of bricking my specific machine im pretty ok with the noise to performance of it currently tho
@@PLPlolol1 you don't need to alter BIOS to undervolt your CPU. Just use Intel XTU or Throttlestop (personally I prefer Throttlestop), it's fairly easy and you can find many guide online. Note the undervolt limit of each individual CPU is different, so if you're lucky, you can get -160 to -180mV, but sometimes you can only get to -80mV before it becomes unstable.
Hey Dave, there is actually a second secret about the OLED Blade that you probably don't know: The RTX 2080 Max-Q is running at 80W (735Mhz base clock) instead of 90W (990Mhz base clock) so it runs around 5-10% slower than the last RTX 2080 Blade 15 (with 8750H CPU).

Saw the new video of Matthew Moniz review of Acer Predator Helios 300 which also came with factory undervolt out of the box. This sort of is a good idea from manufacturers and more companies should opt for it as it has a significant improvement in thermal performance. Also not many people know about undervolting CPU and most of them will just not do it.
Dave, you also forgot to mention that the RTX 2080 Max-Q is only an 80 watt chip in the 9750h Blade, but it's a 90 watt chip in the 8750h Blade. Maybe do a video flashing the 90 watt bios on the new Blade and see if it actually makes a difference? Some of us are wondering if the 8750h out performs the 9750h in gaming or benchmarks. That's the big secret for me.
Hi Dave, think you raised a really good point putting the thermal solution to the doubt. I own a Razer Blade 15 Advanced (2019) myself (RTX 2070), and my conclusion is that the vapour cooling chamber combined with the Aluminium Unibody definitely help dissipates heat, proven by the thermal testing result done by professional sites using IR thermometer or even FLIR camera. The elephant in the room is simple: the Fan Exhaust and intake design on this is so 2010s, in the era where we have Zephyrus S and extruding rear exhaust fans, the Razer blade only uses two thicc rubber bumps to raise it off the surface hoping to draw more air in. The performance on my Blade 15 increases so much simply by using the Razer official laptop stand (point being it does not obstruct the fan, so any other stand like a Roost will also do ), especially when playing for longer sessions. I understand that it's meant to be a thin and slim device, but yea the probably should rework the exhaust solution, maybe starting from the hinge design
Waiting on Dave to review the new Dell XPS 15" OLED before I make my purchase. Apparently the cooling issues are solved. Need Dave's in depth look. Great video as always!

the closest "light" laptop with great battery life that can also game (w/ 120hz screen) is the zephyrus G. around 1100 bucks. It's relatively cheap for the form-factor but if by student you mean 600-800 max then you should look at Asus's Tuff lineup. they sorta bulky but great bang for the buck
This^. Keep in mind that the Zephyrus has a bad screen even with the 120hz in terms of gamut and brightness, but most gamers shouldn't be too badly bothered. There's also the Helios 300 from Acer, a bit more expensive for a 1660ti, but is overall better in almost every way. 144hz, all metal build etc
Can't say anything about ASUS TUF FX505, however, I have used Dell G3 with GTX 1050 TI and GTX 1060 Max-Q respectively, and first thing you will definitely notice is dim display, poor track pad, poor thermal for 1060 Max-Q. 1060 Max-Q version also got a really funky driver that does seems to perform inferior from normal 1060 Max-Q, granted, it is the cheapest laptop equipped with 1060 Max-Q, so there are certainly good reason to get one. And yes, I have undervolted the cpu by 170mv, still runs hot and throttle substantially, might try to use Throttle stop to fine tune sometime in the future. Dell warranty is basically hit or miss , so test it exhaustively when you get the machine, my Dell G3 couldn't post after a week, turns out its a SSD compatibility issue which I fixed myself, as contacting Dell in Hong Kong for replacement is next to useless, their tech support is pretty complacent though.

I love the fact that we were perfectly happy with 60hz (60fps) for FPS games for decades and now it's something to be sneered at :-) ... especially as consoles still struggle to hit 60 in a lot of games.
The problem with not telling your consumer that you're undervolting their tech is that, on the one hand, your marketing department is constantly telling people they need faster and faster processors while on the other hand you're either undervolting/throttling them or letting them run hot and increase their chance of baking your internals. Both are dishonest.
Relatable. I’m fine gaming with my new XPS 15 7590 (bought the i7 for better temps and 1080p display for battery life) even if it means playing at lowest settings/undervolting my cpu & gpu. I can’t wait for its arrival. I have never played any decent game at 60fps. Intel GPU is such a hell :( I swear that I’ll never ever get anything that has intel GPU as main graphic processor. I’m tired of 30fps console playing too.
I’ve owned this laptop for about two weeks and I really like it. The screen is amazing. I don’t play FPS games on PC so the refresh rate doesn’t bother me, but I have found one issue that I’m trying to work through with Razer that I’m not sure is solvable. HDR works great for videos, but games that support HDR don’t allow you to enable in game. Even if you toggle on HDR for games and apps in Windows 10, once you go to the in game settings the option for HDR is grayed out and can’t Ben enabled.
I’m not a gamer, but am glad to be educated on the limitations of a Oled panel, particularly its refresh rate. My edc is the 2018 12.9 iPads pro. The IPS panel on that device Is stunning! My daughter has the Tab S6 with its OLED panel. I would describe it as different not better, and honestly, I prefer the IPS. Plus I prefer the aspect ratio of the iPad Pro.
Please review the i9 Aero 15 oled. I am really trying to decide between that and this. Just trying to juggle the extra cores, thermals, and video and photo processing power. Thanks!
When you had a problem with FPS games on OLED screens, I thought you would talk about ghosting (not burn in). But for many people who haven't yet upgraded their screens/laptops to higher refresh rates, 60Hz is the norm. Definitely if you're playing/using 120Hz screens you'd notice it immediately (say, you have an iPhone and an iPad Pro, and you'll notice the difference when scrolling).
The GX502 by Asus is just like a razer blade but it has better specs and no max-q for less money with better cooling! Please review it as there are very few reviews for such a great laptop!
Well there's a gigantic difference between small phone screens and laptop sized screens... OLEDs with 13"+ are MUCH more expensive because it's way harder to produce them.
The new Acer Predator Helios 300 also has a default undervolt and it also increases performance on that one. I don't think it's a suggestion of bad hardware cooling but rather good software settings. As long as the performance is increased, it's all good!
2:09 Exactly this. My caveat on this though, is that not everybody playing FPS will actually WANT better motion as opposed to better picture quality. There’s also the fact that most gamers, believe it or not, aren’t mainly playing FPS. I think for most gamers and for most games, OLED is the best.
Another con to OLEDs for gamers. burn in. After enough long gaming sessions, certain elements may get burned into the screen, such as the reticle, health bar/symbol, and other things that don't move around that much.
Problem? No and Dave2D stated it wasn't exactly a problem. But People are not being told about the -100mV and that is deceptive. What if I sort of like the thermals and think - "I'll under volt those 3-4 degrees away" only to find out I can't because that makes the CPU too weak and it crashes? No, capitalism is built on the promise of an informed consumer.
If you're willing to go with a slightly thicker machine for better thermals you can get the Clevo PB50 for around $1600 with the same 4K OLED panel. I have it and it's amazing. I paid 1400 Euro for mine with a 9750h and a 1660ti but I chose not to get the RTX model because I have a gaming desktop. You should review the RTX 2070 version if you get a chance Dave as value wise it is unbeatable when compared to the other laptops on the market offering this panel.
I'm an IT professional and I need the display for work reason, just like content creators. Most business machines don't have the specs I want, so gaming devices fit the bill. Newer machines, like Razer and IBM, are starting to capture this market with premium components and added storage capacity, which is awesome for folks like me. And yeah, I can play FPS too on my 2018 Blade with 4K.

@@willwunsche6940 ofc my monitor is capable of 60hz I'm talking about how my potato PC can't push 60 fps to my monitor when gaming 🤣🤣
Will you do a video on the new Dell XPS 15?
So nice! Great review and those screen specs at 3:30 🤤
The 240hz 2019 blade I have (9th gen cpu and 2070mq) is also undervolted
My 8+ year old Alienware AW2310 3D TN Panel is 120mhz FHD, Was 60hz normal and 120hz 3D, now 120hz always :)
Now that's a Monitor
"OLEDs are topped at 60 HZ" cough cough one plus 7 pro
Dell Alienware 55″ 4K 120Hz OLED Gaming Monitor
Also, pretty much all LG OLED TVs run at 120Hz.
COUGH COUGH ASUS ROG PHONE 2
I bet in like 3 years, we will see a lot of 144hz oled monitors going for a reasonable price. Man that will be awesome
@@dasrix5681 the specs on that thing are crazy
New lighting? Camera? So soft. I love it.
Me: Ooo boy a oled screen
Dave: hey it's 3000$ dollars
Me: Time to

This channel is the best in quality
My friend's OLDED screen has the Red Dead Redemption 2 Mini-Map burnt into his screen 😂
omg LOL
Omg thay would pure tick me off. I could never have that.
That’s rough 😂
Scared of having burn in of yt comments on my oled phone
Tizian damn. That’s straight 8hrs+ a day gaming for him to have gotten that.
Thanks!
Go gigabyte
Dave is playing something else then Dva? Crazy world we live in!
Please do a review on the new Asus zephyrus s gx502 :)
Please do a review of the new Asus Zephyrus M with the 2060
Zephyrus m 2060 bro and that. Im waiting
The GX502 by Asus is just like a razer blade but it has better specs and no max-q for less money with better cooling! Please review it as there are very few reviews for such a great laptop!
Hi, can u review HP pavilion gaming laptop, thanks
This video quality is breathtaking.
We have had OLED in phones since 10 years ago. About bloody time
Well there's a gigantic difference between small phone screens and laptop sized screens...
60hz has suddenly become choppy? Ok, Dave.
I think oled panel is not the reason for not buying 3000$ laptop...
Because that's the only party in this otherwise $1800-2400+ laptop... Lol? K.
Not like it has an almost desktop grade $1200 GPU or $550 DESKTOP GRADE processing unit
Video looking SHARP great work..
Another con to OLEDs for gamers. burn in. After enough long gaming sessions, certain elements may get burned into the screen, such as the reticle, health bar/symbol, and other things that don't move around that much.
Hats off to your Thumbnail ;)
I would rather buy this then a MacBook Pro (15 inch).
i think new Aero 15 is better it has larger battery and can work 8 hours +
This Razor Laptop= $3,000
Macbook Pro 15" = $2,400
Choose your pick
It's glad to see razer is improving their products and improving support!
Razer is now considered on my list of "Laptop brands that might be my go to"
Hi, can anyone help with a link to the skull wallpaper at 5:50? Thanks.
That’s a very interesting discovery! What a coincidence I undervolt my 2018 Razer Blade’s CPU for 0.1 V as well!
What's the problem of not telling people it's undervolted? I mean, better experience?
And yes. Apple also undervolt their cpus
You should review the RTX 2070 version if you get a chance Dave as value wise it is unbeatable when compared to the other laptops on the market offering this panel.
why 4k on a laptop. 1440-90 would make it an actual gaming display.
@@djraved Wait, did I hear IBM? I thought they only made thinkpads, albeit with lenovo, do they make other computers? That'd be awesome!
That skull wallpaper is sick I need that asap

What?!?! 60 fps is choppy, dude I'm playing games at 25 fps
If you're not from the more wealthy parts of the west it must ve infuriating hearing people say "Anything less than 144Hz too choppy".
In order to install florescent bulbs, lift into the socket and twist 90 degrees
pls do a review of Acer Predator Helios 300 Ignite Fusion(2019)
same here like to know his opinion on helios 300 (2019)
Your videos always full of information ✔️💥💥
3:15 Kurzgesagt Videos are great, like yours =D
Finally a video on laptops
idk why i love OLED so much , it just attracts me so hard
I can never use any other type of screen again
Did he change cameras?! This video is looking extra CRISPY!
complains on 60hz while i have 59hz monitor smh
When you live that 144 Hz life, 60 becomes peasantry.
60hz TV from 2008 still works.
@@RafidW9 when 200hz monitors come out then i can probably afford a 144hz monitor
@@jacktheninja 240hz is already out
