  • Adam unboxes a set of new writing tools from the designers at Makers Cabinet. First off is a their Ferrule pencil holder that grips a standard wooden pencil using a machining collet. Adam also checks out a prototype of their new Lazlo ballpoint pen (named after the inventor of the ballpoint). The springless mechanism deploying the pen is so satisfying!

      I've got a metal fountain pen. It's got a glass tube with a plastic syringe for the ink sucker, but otherwise is entirely metal, but painted black. It's got a bent nib because it was intended for calligraphy, but I use it for everything.

    Adam, in the wood lathe hobby community, pen and pencil making (using kits, but making the shell) is a common sub-branch of the hobby. If you're not already aware of it, look up "pen kit" in any of the woodworking online companies. People use wood usually, but acrylic, bone, and metal are also used.

      Find a bit of hollow bamboo the right size, bind it a couple of inches from one end and split the short end to the binding. wrap an elastic band round the end, then you can push your short stub into the end and it will give you a new "handle"!

      You can find aluminum and plastic versions really, really cheap at most tool stores. They come in square and round pencil sizes. The replaceable eraser is a nice addition on this one though. Most either lack them or have a fixed eraser built on (most guys just carried one extra pencil extender with an eraser tube put in instead of a pencil).

    They should make an exacto knife!

    • @KonradTheWizzard
      @KonradTheWizzard 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      If you want a well designed exacto knife, use proper scalpels! That shape is called "figure 11" and you can buy them as "single use" plastic handles or proper stainless steel handles that have exchangeable blades. The blades sold as scalpel are usually of a much higher quality than the exacto blades, while being cheaper too.
      While you are at it: I would recommend to also get a box of mixed "single use" scalpels with different blade shapes (figures 10, 12, 15, 21-24) - you will be surprised how much the shape of the blade influences what you can do with it! E.g. while a figure 11 (a'ka exacto) is great for cutting into something, a figure 10 or 21 allows you to scrape paint from a surface without scratching it.

    I have never ordered anything so fast as I did just now - I am a pencil person. I love all my mechanical pencils and still have the ones I used when I took my bar exam back in the early '90s. In fact, I still have the cheap orange mechanicals that Adam uses which I bought in college in the 80s - the erasers have been replaced many times. My everyday desk pencil is a beautiful enameled Waterman, but it's heavy and I don't write enough longhand to become accustomed to the weight and the width. The Ferrule looks like the perfect compromise. I've also had my eye on the Iris and the Hovel sharpener for a while and finally decided to splurge.

    Small update, the Schmidt cartridge that was in my pen, had a slightly bent tip that was interfering, new cartridge fixed the problem pen is working perfectly.
    However, the mechanism is very temperamental. It has a satisfying click to extend the pen, but it requires quite a bit of force to rotate (too much if I’m being honest) to extend, but once extended it’s very loose and retracting takes almost no force and happens with little warning.
    Extending takes 3/4 of a turn and quite a bit of force. Retracting takes a quarter turn and almost no force, so it is extremely easy to simply have it snap out and immediately back in when trying to extend it (you can actually see this happened a couple of times in this video)

    i hit pause because im in the middle of making coffee
    i just wanted to chime in on brass and hand utensils, when i was in high school my dad took us to monterey calif and we went into a brass shop and bought a whole set of brass silverware. we opened a few settings worth and uhm well the smell that would happen because of the interaction of skin and brass, we just couldn't get over the smell

    Their pieces are beautifully made & heavy. I'm sure the pencil could be used as a tactical weapon 😂😂😂

    What is it with engineers and cedar pencils? My grandfather was an aeronautical engineer until he retired in the early 90's and other than his drafting pencils, which were mechanical, he used cedar pencils almost exclusively. Is there a benefit to them over a standard #2?

    When Adam said "Laslo. Interesting name I love it." I thought he was going to say how the inventor of the ballpoint pen was named László Bíró, and now he got a pen from Laslo. But no, it's just the café around the corner.

    Adam, have a request. I am a maker and want to increase the size of my industrial sewing machine hand wheel for slower sewing. I am using a larger standard equipment pulley now, but want a machined bolt on adaptor to the original hand wheel. I have looked around and nothing available. I don't have a mill nor 3D printer. I thought maybe this would make a great one day build video. Cheers, Anthony.
