Adam also gushes over the design of an iris compass, made of beautifully machined brass. With all of these drafting tools, he's also using one of his favorite pencils: the venerated Blackwing 602!

    The "stand" of the IRIS also acts as a center-finding tool. You put the stand inside the fully-opened IRIS and the stand's tip is right at the circle's center. Mark your dot, remove the stand, then adjust the iris to the desired size without moving the IRIS and the dot will be in the exact center of any circle you make. There are also measurements along the outside diameter or the IRIS that let you make the exact size circle you want, or measure the size of existing circles or cylinders that fit inside the IRIS.
    I bought one just to have on my classroom table for my students to play around with and get inspired!

      @@sallyoldford9237 To make a long, but interesting story short the Blackwings that you can find on Amazon and other retailers are not the original, genuine article. To expand on it slightly the original Eberhard Faber Blackwing was considered “The Best Pencil Ever Created” and its legend grew from there. Famous writers, composers, and animators like John Steinbeck, Stephen Sondheim, Don Bluth, and countless others swore by them and would refuse to use anything else. Unfortunately, the famous Eberhard Faber Blackwing was discontinued in 1998 after a key piece of original machinery broke and their recently acquired new ownership, Sanford Manufacturing, didn’t see the point in fixing it due to the relatively low, yet passionate, sales. In 2008 California Cedar bought the rights to reproduce and distribute it under their Palomino division, but the magic behind the Blackwing was gone. Some say it is almost an entirely different utensil. The pencils that Adam dropped was a complete, in box, Eberhard Faber Blackwing original. You can still find some on Ebay for around $40-$50 dollars per pencil. The boxed set is much rarer.

      My headphones use a wire with a lot of sticktion, and it drives me nuts because the wire catches on everything. I have to be a more careful about putting drinks near the left side of my laptop due the increase risk of the wire snagging and spilling my drink. It doesn't even matter if there's slack on each side of the snag, the wire will stick without actually sticking. This is the first time I've seen something where I thought this type of rubber/plastic would be handy.

      @@happytrails5342 My issue isn't price alone. I can speak to it's value in three ways. One, materials/labor brass and stainless construction. It's probably pretty expensive to make. Two, relative value. Unfortunately, a compass does the same job for four dollars. Three, how well it does that job. Since the splines don't lay flat and nothing is holding your stylus in a rigid manner, its very easy to mark your circle wrong.

Nowadays I'm continuously pushing the limits of my skills and fumbling my way though continuous skills-improvement. The no hard-and-fast rules mindset that you and other similar makers have instilled in me over the past couple decades has allowed me to accomplish some things in my life that I'm rather proud of. I think, hilariously, and I've seen this before, is really the antithesis of Adam's typical approach, echoed by many DIY people. Many makers seem to be content with using whatever it takes to get the job done. Practicality and pragmatism are the baseline. The gold-plated adjustable pencil sharpening mini-plane on Blackwing pencils really represents a kind of indulgent opulence. Both approaches are valid. Quality is meritable. Pencil plane: It does rather seem to be trying to solve a problem that doesn't exist. I sometimes like to plane my pencils as it sharpens to a fine point without breaking the lead. But the plane I use is much easier to grip and it can also be used as a block plane... largely because it's a block plane. I can use it easily even if my fingers are a bit greasy. I know, it's nicely made, beautifully finished and rather quirky... and (if you'll excuse the pun) utterly pointless.
    The Iris compass, on the other hand, has a lot going for it. A standard compass will extend to the exact diameter that you want but it needs a surface that you can dig a point in (not possiple on some surfaces and undesirable on surfaces you don't want to marr). Circle templates eliminate the the centre point problem but are confined to the diameters available. The iris template is a brilliant solution to what is undeniably a problem.
    I just hope they didn't spend too much on prototyping the 'pencil plane' as I can't imagine it would be of interest to anyone except tool nerds like... well, I won't point any fingers but they know who they are... don't you?

    • @Bronzescorpion
      @Bronzescorpion 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    • @ae4164

      I wouldn't say it's trying to solve a problem that doesn't exist simply because it seems obvious to me that it's for people who like collecting impractical "tools" that are just meant to sit on a shelfand look pretty. He almost immediately drops it, proving how difficult it is to hold on to and actually use. It's also hilariously (though predictably) overpriced at $60, which for that price you could get a full-sized plane that would work on lumber like you were talking about. Gotta be honest I lost a little respect for Adam watching him gush over what is essentially a paperweight that he will almost surely never use.

I got this brass precision pencil sharpener from there that had two conical holes, each with it's own factory adjusted blade. One was for shaving off the wood and the other for pointing the lead.
    It wasn't long before I noticed why the Eberhard Faber pencils from the drafting store cost like 10 cents each while the pencils from Ben Franklin or an office supply store were maybe 25 for 50 cents. The Eberhard Faber pencils had the lead running straight down the middle, while the Ticonderoga pencils had their lead running pretty much anywhere.

      I find that sometimes actually drawing isn’t best for me. If I can really conceptualize the piece fully in my head I don’t necessarily need to draw it. • @Chrisamic
      @Chrisamic 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Drawing something is a very useful way to get from having an idea, to having something you made in your hands. It's a great way to crystalise ideas and solve problems before you even touch any tools, and it's a great way to develop ideas even if it takes some time to solve a problem or find the right inspiration. Don't worry if you can't draw very well, that isn't as important as you might think (I'm not that great). The most important thing is to just sketch it out and get an idea of how it might look in reality, and see how parts might fit together. As you sketch things you'll get more experience and your sketches will get better - it's one of those things where you learn by doing; you can't do it the other way around. Instructional resources *can* be very good, but only after you've stumbled enough times to know which parts of it you struggle with. So: just draw! No one is going to see it unless you show it to them.
      I do recommend proper bound notebooks. You might not act on an idea straight away but have it kicking around in the background. Don't throw anything away, because with a bound book you can always go back and add to it or change it. Loose pages can get lost, and spiral notebooks are messy, and too easy to rip pages out of which you might regret later. I like drawing on graph lined paper, but bound books with those markings are harder to come by. Blank paper or feint ruled are my usual preference.
      Lastly, carry your notebook with you when you are out. Sometimes you get an idea and it's just helpful to getting something down on paper straight away. I like to use a propelling pencil when I'm out. It never needs sharpening and clips on the elastic strap that holds my book shut. If I want pencils for shading or ink for dimensions I can always do that later.

    That’s some nice stuff. For the iris, I feel they could totally laser etch graduations showing what size circle you have. Or maybe just a 1” or something.

    Love the giant protractor, it's true that you can't have too many tools, I have been buying tools for over fifty years and I still see new tools that I need, that includes the Hovel, the perfect tool for sharpening a carpenter's pencil.
    I want the Iris too.

    I love Shinwa! They're a Japanese company that specializes in things like steel rules and stick shaped measuring tools of all kinds. I have a wonderful steel rule from them. As a machinist, it's a must-have.

    I watched this a while ago and re-found it today. I really love watching how excited you get and the stories you have like the "PENCIL NERD!" I cannot wait to be able to buy both the Iris and the Hovel Pencil Plane. I inherited the gene for collecting pencils, pens, sharpeners, and other desk related items. I especially love the when items are both beautiful/cool/cute AND useful. I call the "useful foofoos".
