Love the video quality and the uncut full match. Spectacular! Sabatini vs Zvereva, from 92 as well, at this quality level, would be a dream come true. Outstanding work. Much thanks,
to this day i'd still pick Steffi as the greatest player ive seen in my lifetime. Pam Shriver was a very popular player here in Australia probably more so than Martina
Shriver here really severely affected by injuries that plagued the later part of her career. Her shoulder was especially bad and needed special warming up before each match. She was way past her prime, but you can see glimpses here of what made her such a tough player. Her wingspan was massive at the net, and once she was there she was difficult to pass or lob. Her game really was from an era when tennis was played on grass with wooden racquets. Interestingly, she used the exact same racquet as Monica Seles (the Yonex RQ-380). Their games could not have been more different.
She had one of the best serves in women's tennis certainly the quickest when she played in the 70's and 80's once her shoulder stuff started she lost that weapon and couldn't get past early rounds
This almost looks like it may be the same grandstand court where they faced off in that amazing 3 tiebreaker match several years earlier that Graf won.
Pam was in great form in 1988 and 89 she was one of two players to beat Steffi in 88 and finally got the better of evert then too. She went under for surgery and came back in 1990 looking great too winning another doubles slam but then for some reason fell of the map at only 28 years old. She was hardly 30 in this match and for some reason she looked miles slower in the 90s and she made a lot of uncharacteristic errors at the net. She wouldn't win another doubles slam and never made it past the 3rd round of a singles major. wonder what happened or if the scandal with her coach had something to do with it.
Steffi was always a super tough opponent for her though, even at her best. Yes she had that huge win in 88 at the YEC, but she also lost 6-2, 6-0 and 6-2, 6-1 in the semis of Wimbledon in both 87 and 88. Their US Open match in 87 was closer but still a comfortable straight set win for Steffi. Ironically she came closer in this match than all those others, way past her prime as you said. Maybe that speaks to how poorly Graf was playing at this Open as well (she would lose in straight sets to Sanchez Vicario).
Pam had the same hairstyle for more than a decade. The only thing I disliked about her on court was the fact that she took such a long time between serves. The US Open was shown live on South African television, but I only watched from the first Saturday of the tournament because of the time difference. I was very upset when I watched the Virginia Slims match when Graf lost to Shriver in '88. On a different note I think one very underrated player was Mary Joe Fernandez, I rooted for her in every match except against Graf.
Yet Shriver beat Graf in a key match at the YEC, and also had victories over Navratilova and Evert. She looks awkward but her serve was powerful, her slices stayed low and her volleys/overheads were superb. She was one half of the greatest doubles team in history, remember.
@@CalveeLorenzo I wouldn’t have said Evert was at her best then but still, Shriver did manage a few victories in the end. I find it interesting that Shriver has a better winning percentage against Graf than she does against Evert or Navratilova.
Steffi Graf was my favorite player,i was thinking she had perfect game, now i can see that her backhand wasn't that great, although she could slice the ball, but couldn't attack with it. Anyway, one of the best ever.
@@Ricky-mo6mv It happened because Shriver was a very good player, with excellent serve and overheads, solid volleys and sliced low approach shots. She also beat Evert and Navratilova, reached the USO final aged 16, and was one half of the best doubles team in history. She looks awkward but was very effective, before serious shoulder injury. Graf was always vulnerable to good serve volley players. She lost to Lori McNeil twice, at YEC and first round of Wimbledon as #1 seed. She was 9-9 h2h with Navratilova, and trailed her 4-5 in slams. Actually their last major meeting was here at USO91, which Navratilova won, aged 34 to Graf's prime 21.
@@tobiasisback4605there is a caveat there. 5 of Martina victory came before 1987 when Steffi was yet to reached a slam final & Martina was at her peak. And 16 of 18 matches were take place on fast courts that suits Martina's style of play. She was clever enough to avoid meeting against Steffi on clay & rebound ace of Australian open otherwise Steffi would have easily wins that h2h contests.
@@rajusaha855 No caveat. Martina was 13 years older than Graf. Of course she won more in her prime and lost more when she was older. Even so, Martina won her last major encounter with Graf at USO91 aged 34.
I disagree, Shriver is pretty annoying as a commentator. But “a man amongst women”??? That’s a weird-ass comment. Can’t you just say she’s amazing and leave it at that? I mean, why can’t I watch a video concerning women’s tennis these days without someone being sexist? Why?
thank you USTA for posting. More Steffi please! Great battles between her and Gaby especially the 1993 QF!
There's a million Steffi matches out there. More Pam, please.

Nice to see a friendly handshake at the net. Pam was always a heart on the sleeve player and you can see there’s genuine respect from both.

😍😍😍 Gracias Stefanie Graf.
Steffi and Pam seemed quite friendly. I think they even played doubles together a few times.

My name is Mr. Aniruddha, I love Steffi Graf. House is at Dist- Charaideo, State- Assam, Country- India.
Hey @USTA any chance you have the memorable 1992 R2 match with Maggie Maleeva vs. Martina Navratilova? would love that one ;-)
