In this video I show you how to grow, harvest and collect the seeds of Silverbeet, Rainbow Chard also known as Swiss Chard.
Whatever you call it, you'll find it is east to sew, transplant, grow, harvest and collect and save the seeds.
Silverbeet is a fairly hardy vegetable as it has little problem with pests and tolerated both hot and cold conditions.
If you are new to gardening or you aren't growing Silverbeet then I highly recommend it.
In a future Video, I will show you my easy and favorite way to cook it - without making it a sloppy mess and a childs nightmare on a plate.

    Welcome to Moat Cottage Homesteading,
I'm Elissa and on this channel you will see my homesteading life.
I show you how to be more self sustainable & homestead in a small space.
You'll see how to grow organic food, use and preserve the harvest, raise backyard poultry, both Muscovy ducks and Chickens as well as breeding Mealworms and Crickets.
You will learn how to make natural remedies, get more prepared for emergency situations, how to organise the homestead, money saving ideas and how to live with less waste.
Here at Moat Cottage, we raise and grow and process some of our own free range meat, organic vegetables and fruit.
We grow all of our herbs for both eating and medicinal purposes as well as hunt, fish and forage.
We preserve our produce for the year ahead by canning, dehydrating and freezing and we work on being prepared for emergency situations.
We live using less waste, we recycle and upcycle and love finding what is needed for a project at the scrap yard, op shop or a garage sale, but only buy what is really needed.
We don't like plastic, chemicals and artificial fragrances and are trying to live an older style life balanced with this modern world lifestyle.
Good health and natural living has always been a high priority for our family and despite this two family members are living with auto immune diseases, myself included.
We focus on what we can do, when we can do it, stay positive and so I make these videos for you on my best days.
    Much Love

I have swiss chard growing in a bucket from last year. It made it through our crazy winter up on my porch. I usually throw the chard and lettuce carrot & radishes in a small jar and use them as my salad mix and sow them whenever I have a bucket just harvested as it's quick & easy turn around. I like to eat them when they're much smaller. When they get big I remove stems and cut like chives and add to cooking like my onions. Then tear leaves up a bit and wilt. Really good with a nice fried egg or on rice in last few minutes before serving time.

Hello Edie Boudreau it really is a hardy vegetable and this is further proof.
I too love it with rice and your salad mix sounds very good too. 🌱😊

Hey Corey Dewhurst the vines behind me are two varieties of sweet potato, they will be ready to harvest before Winter so hopefully they’re growing well under the ground.
It’s so fantastic that you got rain, not so fortunate on this side of the ranges but at least you got some. 😊🌧 🍠
      Have a great day

Great video. When do you pull out silver beet plants? Some of my silver beet plants are over 3 ft tall and is growing small leaves on long stems. The main stem is very thick. I am getting lots of little leaves on top rather than lush leaves on the bottom

Hi David, your Silverbeet sounds like it’s going to seed. If you are happy for it to go to seed, so you have your own supply of seeds, then let your best plant go to seed.
If you need the space pull out when there isn’t much left worth eating. If you live in a climate that supports all year growing, then start more seeds for your next crop, I usually start them a couple of months prior to the first plot goes to seed, so I always have Silverbeet 🥬

aidan robinson g’day Aidan, my no 1 tip is to make your own COMPOST!
If you have access to clean (chemical free) manure and autumn leaves in Autumn that really gets the compost going.
Chop and drop crops are good and always mulching so the hot Aussie sun doesn’t cook the soil.
Test your PH so you know where you’re starting and that will help with what you need to add to your compost too.
In a new to be, garden area, just sitting a straw bale down for 6 months is a great way to get the worms and micro organisms moving, especially if it gets wet occasionally.
I hope that helps to get you started. Elissa 😊
