There is something - no matter how many years I garden, that I just love seeing other gardeners in their garden talking about very simple things like this. It’s calming, it’s refreshing. Simple tours on progress & thoughts. Not enough garden shows out there that do that.

I love that you had dirt on your hands. In a lot of gardener videos I see, their hands look like they have never touched dirt. Gardeners should have dirty hands. I'm a dirty hands snob. Lol 😀

I wear gloves as much as possible to protect my hands/nails. Especially if dealing with bagged soil/compost, who knows what's in it. I've read that what is absorbed through your skin gets into your blood stream faster than what you eat!

Beautiful AND delicious, and so easy to grow. Last year was my first year growing swiss chard, it kept growing throughout the cold Ohio weather, so I let one plant go to seed this year to save the seeds. BUT I didn't even need to plant any because the seeds that dropped germinated and grew, now I have a whole bed of swiss chard. Yum!✌🏼💜🙏🏼💪🏼🌱🌱🌱

Hi Luke. I love swiss chard. I have swiss chard in my garden ALL year long in Cape town. All the different colors. My only enemy is snales/slugs but a quick beer trap sorts that out quickly. So easy to grow and versatile in the kitchen.

@@skullykittie9889 be patient. I found that they take long to get to a point where you can start to harvest but when you get there, boy do they keep on giving. They dont like to be very hot they look so sad at the end of a hot summers day but purk up quickly after a good watering. plant them in semi shade (in summer) or when in full sun, cover with shade cloth. Like i said in my original comment, keep an eye out for snails, especially when they are young, else they will eat the whole seedling.... Good luck and enjoy

I am 2.5 hours east of Luke, other side of Lake Huron in Canada. My chard was decimated by leaf miner anywhere in my garden, even in grown in containers on my deck until I tried interplanting. Now I plant Rainbow Lights chard at the foot of my cordoned indeterminate tomatoes with a row of basil and chives to surround them. I let the basil and chives flower for the bees, beauty and aroma. My chard is 100% leaf miner free and very prolific. After the basil and chives have faded and more space opens up from pruning the tomatoes, I fill in the gaps with Fordhook Giant Chard.

We call it Silverbeet here in NZ and anybody who has a vege garden always has it growing here - as far back as I can remember. Its is super easy to grow and as you say, beautiful -lush with all kinds of colours. It doesnt go to seed the way spinach does, as soon as it gets hot, and self seeds easily. I chop it up and put it in many different dishes. I do find, however, that some of the green and white varieties, taste sweeter than the rainbow variety. Darn it!! i"m growing a new variety here, called Peppermint which has bright pink stems at the base, fading to white and then soft green leaves. I'm hoping i"ll get sweetness and colour together. They are all fantastic though and my garden is NEVER without Silverbeet. Thanks for bringing it into the spotlight - much deserved.

My Fordhook Giant lived up to it's name - some stems were nearly 4 inches wide! I had some ruby chard too that GLOWED hot pink when the morning sun hit it - SUCH a joy, and so delicious. And healthy too. Love your enthusiasm Luke - it's wonderful to see and sorely needed. Cheers!

I grow Swiss Chard all year round in Southern Australia. Very hardy plant, easy to grow, always bounces back, and I get a consistent crop every month of the year. I get all colours as well. When it is smaller it is more lettuce like, let it grow and it is more spinach like. I steam some up often with an egg and mushroom omelette served over some lightly baked muffins. Excellent and filling weekend breakfast.

I had predatory wasps move into my garden this summer and they helped so much with the horned worms I didn't really have to worry about them after that.

    • @ajb.822
      @ajb.822 2 ปีที่แล้ว

Yes. We didn't ever have tomato hornworms until we spent 3 years in IL ( are from NW Wisconsin and am back here now ) , ditto with the Japanese beetles btw. . So, we found out right away about leaving the hornworms with the white wasp eggs on them, live to hatch out and kill the worms. I did have hubby take them to the tree-line/brushy edge of the yard for me tho. Figured they didn't need to keep eating my tomato leaves while they waited to die. Anyways, by my 3rd & final season there, I only saw evidence of hornworms on 2 of my tomato plants.

Hi Luke. I love how enamored you are with Swiss Chard. I thought it was just me who went outside & admired its beauty. It adds so much texture, color, & movement to the garden. I would actually consider it to be ornamental. The flavor is just as great, too. It has even brought me to eat a salad a day, & although I do like veggies, I rarely ate salads. By the way, there is also a Midnight Swiss Chard that is a deep, glossy purple. It's gorgeous. I have only been able to find it from one site, though, & they're sold out. Anyhow, thanks for introducing me to it, the Rainbow Swiss is doing great in my raised bed, zone 7a.

I absolutely adore swiss chard, the best tasting green by far to me. If u hate Kale and like spinach so so, and like beet greens at all, you'll love swiss chard. ( I do tolerate Kale & like beet greens a lot ). Chard is most similar to beet greens , but still it's own flavor. Chard , unlike kale ( in my limited experience ) cooks & tastes well in a stove top dish such as stir fry or omelettes. My kale I chop up and freeze ( raw, no blanching ) in used yogurt containers stuffed full of it and put in deep freezer. Lasts well for over a year just fine. I mostly just add it to stews , for added greens in diet. Would probably work for chard and other greens, I just haven't had extra of those yet, since I started doing this. I have chard in 2 smaller pots/planters which I brought inside for the winter I'm still using out of for now.

My introduction to Swiss Chard came from buying a package of mixed salad green seeds. Fell in love with their beauty and taste immediately. Every time a leaf is cut a new baby one appears within a day or so. Since we prune them prematurely specifically for salads, had no idea they could grow as enormous as in this video.
I don't know the variety. Perhaps Ruby Red. Steams are bright red. Leaves change from a bright light green to a darker green as they grow bigger. I would love to try the orange and purple one shown in this video. What variety is it?
About a week ago, I stopped at your online store to buy some seeds to include Swiss Chard. Since there were none of any kind, I went to a different supplier. Their orange stems have green leaves not purple ones.

Iowa Zone 5a. I like the variety of colors, but my favorite is the old reliable Fordhook Giant. It seems to give me more consistent yields and is a tad more resilient than the colorful varieties. That's just an impression, not a scientific study. So far this year we've had 15 harvests. It's late October, and we'll get one more before the snows. Easy to grow. Doesn't need a lot of TLC. If you haven't tried it, you're missing out.

Sunlight? I planted abt the same time with similar results in a garden that's more shade than sun. SC needs lots of sun.

Luke, I love your channel and your enthusiasm!
I’m in Melbourne, Australia. My Swiss chard has gone ballistic and bolted. I’m waiting for it to dry out so I can harvest the seed. It seems to be taking ages (possibly because we keep getting rain?). Does anyone know how much longer it should take?
It grew really well but I didn’t use all of it so I’ll need to make an effort to eat more next season.

I’m still trying to find that bull’s blood variety of Swiss chard, not beets, that a lady bred. It’s so rare. Great video as always.

Okra can be pretty, as far as edible plants go... and as far as pests go, for anything I actually care about, I always plant 3-4 varieties of each species, as I find pests are drawn to one more than the rest, so then end up becoming sacrificial.

Grow fordhook chard and you won't run out of leafy green. They grow to 3ft tall. One of the easiest vegetable to grow.

I’m 100% there with you when it comes to color in the garden, it brings so much happiness and peace, honestly. Spinach is one of my favorite vegetables, so I may like Swiss Chard. What is the flavor profile like? I grew arugula last year and while it had a good initial flavor, I found it had a real bitter after taste. I didn’t enjoy it raw but I liked it in soups and I also roasted it in a pan with chicken and it was good that way. Sorry to hear the predatory wasps didn’t work out. The thing is, if you don’t have an ideal habitat for them to live in, they just fly away once they’ve eaten all the insects.

I grew chard for the first time this year and found it an excellent substitute for spinach. If anything, it has a milder flavor. I eat it boiled or steamed, don't really prefer it as a raw green, although I know other people that do. The stems are kind of stringy when raw, but soften up right away when cooked and add a nice juicy bit of chew when cooked together with the greens. It also has an advantage over spinach in that it grows all season without bolting, right into late fall/early winter - I'm in Nebraska where we've already had nighttime lows in the mid-20's and the chard is still going strong!

I’m a Swiss Chard Junkie! This video made me salivate! I have struggles with aphids while trying to grow my Swiss chard here in the northwest. I am in Portland Oregon to be exact. Do you have any ideas?

Yes it is very pretty leaf formation. Indeed. Glad the wasp work for a few months. Sorry the leaf miner came back.
