To make a Mealworm breeding farm, gather the following supplies-
    3 x tubs (I used 20 litre or 5 gallon)
1 x tub half height (suitable to cut square out of bottom & fits into larger tub)
1/2 inch x 1.5 inch pine to make rectangle frame (length size depends on your tub size)
Soft fly Wire to fit frame and edges
Screws to fit frame to tub
Stapler with Staples to attach wire to frame
    Oats for food
Sliced Potato & carrot for hydration
    Egg cartons and toilet rolls
    texta for making out
    Drill with 1/8 drill bit
    Stanley knife / box cutter
    Fine tooth saw
Mealworms to start the process, I started with 600 Mealworms

    Welcome to Moat Cottage Homesteading,
I'm Elissa and on this channel you will see my homesteading life.
I show you how to be more self sustainable & homestead in a small space.
You'll see how to grow organic food, use and preserve the harvest, raise backyard poultry, both Muscovy ducks and Chickens as well as breeding Mealworms and Crickets.
You will learn how to make natural remedies, get more prepared for emergency situations, how to organise the homestead, money saving ideas and how to live with less waste.
Here at Moat Cottage, we raise and grow and process some of our own free range meat, organic vegetables and fruit.
We grow all of our herbs for both eating and medicinal purposes as well as hunt, fish and forage.
We preserve our produce for the year ahead by canning, dehydrating and freezing and we work on being prepared for emergency situations.
We live using less waste, we recycle and upcycle and love finding what is needed for a project at the scrap yard, op shop or a garage sale, but only buy what is really needed.
We don't like plastic, chemicals and artificial fragrances and are trying to live an older style life balanced with this modern world lifestyle.
Good health and natural living has always been a high priority for our family and despite this two family members are living with auto immune diseases, myself included.
We focus on what we can do, when we can do it, stay positive and so I make these videos for you on my best days.
    Much Love

at 3:35 The best way I've found was placing the tote on a cutting board and pressing firmly with a fresh new blade and if needs be make 2+ passes to cut out the bottom!

Living The Dream Homestead Hello Nat, thanks so much for the inspiration to finally take the leap.
I will definitely do a video on that, if I go down that path.
I grew up vegetarian, so this is a huge mental shift, but we will see.
(It’s not like eating snails or spiders, that I couldn’t even think of)

Gramma raised crickets to sell fishermen. ( along with wrigglers & miners) crickets love cardboard & will eat veges scraps too. Your chickens should enjoy the treats. The goldfish should be happy. Every once in a while toss them a few crickets...they love them.

Edie Boudreau your Gramma was very entrepreneurial.
I am finding the crickets are loving their egg carton and veggies.

Moat Cottage Homesteading yes. She was. Ran a country store while raising 9 kids. Before that she had to deal with my Grampa who was an abusive binge alcoholic that ruined her good name repeatedly. She had kids to feed & needed clothes & shoes for each. Her life was difficult. She's one of my best examples of those that don't give up or give in for more than a day. She taught Me there's more than the accepted norms to get things done within the laws. Figure it out she'd say. You were given a brain. Use it to come up with a way. She taught me Sooo much.

Edie Boudreau and that’s fair enough!
Back in the 1800s Lobster 🦞 was food for the super poor and people were repulsed at the though of eating them, the same with oysters (although some are still repulsed by them), maybe bugs are the new fancy food 😂 I’m just getting in early, 🤔 they might actually be delicious??? Or not??

Moat Cottage Homesteading I have tried them. Don't like them. Besides TORAH is quite specific on what is acceptable to eat. When I DIDN'T KNOW THOSE RULES THAT WAS 1 THING. NOW THAT I KNOW. I TRY TO DO IT RIGHT.

Thank you, so far so good.
Hopefully we have no escapes, otherwise I’ll have to let the chickens inside to catch them 😂
I lost your comment from the last video and wanted you to know that I loved your question about the onion marmalade and I am really keen to make and share it.

Do you have any videos on fermenting your duck food that also explains the benefits? 🙂 I hope all is well!

      Michael Kensinger th-cam.com/video/WQ4sNRPEpRE/w-d-xo.html
This is my video on how I ferment the grains, it was the first video I was in and I don’t recall if I explained the benefits or if I assumed everyone knew?
But fermented food is good for increasing the good gut bacteria and you save money as the grains swell with the fermenting process and so the birds get full quicker.

They arent worms, though that's what they are called. They are larva of the darkling beetle. They might seem unpalatable, but they are supposedly healthy and cheap.
