Anyone else struggle with shooting 'half days' or deleting full on videos/vlogs because you are thinking about it too much? A lesson I have learned the hard way MANY times! NEVER AGAIN! Also, I forgot to talk about hats. Long story short: More coming soon!
Yeah for sure, the last project I did span across 5 days of documenting and the final product was for 4 minutes approx. I ended up having 500 gigs of footages and audios
i have currently around a weeks worth of half days because of rain or travel or things happening or losing time because of work or all of the above especially when your a small youtuber its hard to put in a lot of time editing and work which i know you understand. looking forward to the new hats keep it up bro ✌
I learned this lesson long ago, but it’s nice hearing that it happens to you and others. I have so many mid vlog meltdowns ... but when I pursue they are often my best vlogs. Thanks for the encouragement.
The vibe of this guy... As soon as he uploads a new video I’m pretty sure a lot of us just smile and think “here we go!”! Really appreciate all the videos, all the enthusiasm and all the good energy you put on ALL of them, Peter. 🙏
This is not the first time when you encourage me keep going, so many times I wanna change the types of videos I do on my channel, but I'm always afraid that I will not get enough views, plus it's been a year almost since I started TH-caming and I don't have enough subscribers so I'm afraid that this scare away the ones that I already have. So everytime I watch your videos I'm inspired to create something new, I just wish I had a cool camera to do the job that I actually wanna, but I don't let this stop me. All I'm trying to say is you inspire me a lot to create something good. So I promise (to myself of course most of all) I'm gonna create great things in the future! #OneLove
I can't tell you how many times I've shot a video and the end result was nowhere near what I had pictured in my head. Sometimes I post them and other times I just throw them in the trash. Either way I'm always glad I tried. Better to shoot something and learn from your mistakes than let self doubt stop you from shooting in the first place.
Don't remember where I heard this but its always stuck with me: "The footage you have is better than the footage you don't!" Another great video, Peter - I'm glad to hear I'm not the only one who struggles with it!
Glad you're talking about this topic. I suffer bad with perfectionism and the amount of videos I've not uploaded because of this is stupid. I decided three weeks ago to just edit it raw, and upload all clips shot and strangely my audience love it. We're our biggest critics but what we think looks garbage, people actually enjoy the rawness of it and not over edited footage.
My acting coach once told me to list the qualities i had, and one of them was that I'm a perfectionist. He stopped me right there and said NO, you can't be a perfectionist... you have to strive for excellence. A perfectionist is next to impossible to work with and they obsess of the smallest of things that don't even matter in the end. He said I have to strive for excellence, which in my opinion would be someone who is able to distinguish when a certain level of work or detail truly does matter or when you're just wasting your time on the things that don't matter.
Peter! I needed this video man. I've filmed 3 vlogs now and nothing has come out of it. Been thinking "maybe I'll just stick to the couch stuff and not the vlogs" - but now I'm giving it the 4th try and I'm gonna push it out. Probably gonna suck but whatever, gotta get better every video. Btw, the little lighting tidbit at the end was awesome!
I'm literally sitting at work thinking about deleting some footage because I'm not 100% happy with it...just watched this video and now feel super encouraged to push through. Thank you so much for sharing your wisdom and knowledge. You might be my favorite person on TH-cam....now to watch another Peter McKinnon video. Lol
King of B-roll is back! Yeah I’ve put a lot of unnecessary energy towards videos that I haven’t used just to find out a great video could have been found if my always running mind didn’t get in the way sometimes.
Yeah, looks good what he makes there. Nada, the trick is: you just need the right consistency of the milk foam. Not to stiff, not to liquid. It must be liquid enough to go through the so called "Crema" (the Espresso's own foam) but not mix with it. Check also the videos of Dritan Asela (th-cam.com/users/dritanalsela), a master of his own, he has also videos up, how you can practice without the need of drinking 200 Cappuccini during practicing ;)
We have a few milk and latte art tutorials from when we teamed up with ChefSteps - check 'em out for practice at home! th-cam.com/video/iwIloOYQa2k/w-d-xo.html
Although i am a subscriber, i don't like the "oh yeah coffee" - 'drink this coffee', 'buy this' videos, although i also like coffee. I understand also that Pete has to also make money.. anyway, just sharing
Oh my God! I literally feel you. It took me a year to upload my first video here on TH-cam because I always thought my footages were trash. Thought it was only me. "You are your own worst critic," indeed! Thanks, Peter! This pushed me to move forward with vlogging!
I've honestly lost count how many times I've done a similar thing. Giving up vlogging when I'm just not feeling it! Then I look back on the day and think I could have captured and told a really good story, but now I don't have the footage. Sometimes it's because I'm tired or not feeling well but other times it just because things are working out the way I thought they would and instead of just going with the flow I stop filming. I'm a landscape photographer and we're headed into another hot summer in Australia. I find the summers challenging for the style of photography I do, so your video is a great reminder of the importance of persistence. Good to know it happens to others, it's something I'll work hard on over the next few months, thanks for sharing!
Same here. I have tons of projects at various stages of completion and many of them would actually probably be fun and worthwhile if I just stick with it.
Pete, so true, thanks for sharing. Took my family camping last weekend with the intention of vlogging it and once I got into it, I thought this would be boring and no one would enjoy it and it's just us hanging out on the mountain for two days and I backed out of vlogging it. Had all my gear with me and just didn't even turn it on (except for some night photos). Need to remember to just keep pushing through and doing it. Thanks for the inspiration.
We also have our bad shooting days and days when we feel very self conscious about ourselves in our vlogs. But you are absolutely right that each person is his/her own biggest critic! Keep pushing through! Thanks for the awesome content! :)
So dang true, I have a hard drive full of footage I never used because I either didn't like it, couldn't find a way to keep continuity for a cohesive video, or stopped shooting in the field for one reason or another. Keep up the killer videos brother!
I love this message, I filmed 20 minutes of crap footage, identified it was crap and I keep editing it just for extra practice. Love your vids, happy early birthday!
Yeah man. I went on a business trip last week and I started filming it. It needed with me climbing Camelback in Arizona. Haven’t finished editing cuz that was the only highlight. I mean had in and but I it’s not the best story. I came back to it last night I thought to myself eh, this could Be something, idk. So I get what you’re saying! Just gotta get through it and keep moving forward. Thanks for your openness and transparency dude! J
Oh man! Thanks for sharing your experience with tossing footage. I scrapped about 3/4 of a Vlog last weekend because I just wasn't feeling it. Ended up taking some older footage from a random filming session the week before to make it work. We have SO MUCH FOOTAGE that never sees the light of day. Glad it's just not us!
Oh my. Peter, for last couple of days I've been (maniacally?) watching your videos since they give me so much motivation. And this video right here is THE ONE that gave me this final motivational kick in the butt. Why? Well, this hits home so darn much. It feels like I have thousand ideas for videos, let's say I film hundred out of this thousand, and then barely 2 videos make it fully through editing and see the daylight. I am self-criticising myself so hardcore it hurts. Thanks for talking about this. Eye-opening.
Totally agree about the footage balance. Pushing through always help provide the story. There is always a reason both in story and in context that you can use it.
You, my dear Peter, are a phenomenal teacher of the creative arts! Hands down, your content are mini, fun crash courses. You can't help but view your videos, learn and catch the photography/cinematography bug. THANK YOU.
I have one, it's a heap of s**t - after 3 months the rear screen has stopped working. I also have an SJCam 6 Legend. It's better, sound, picture and price and it seems much less fragile.
thank you. being someone who is a senior, trying to finish my college applications, while trying to do well in school and maintain a creative life, this has helped me to realize that I need to just push through it. Filming my college application video for Film School has been rough because I wasted my time from the start, filmed an initial film, didn't like it so I erased it, then chose to film something new, but am now having my doubts about it. I am going to finish this video and I will make sure that I try my best from here on because who knows, maybe I can turn my footage into something that people will enjoy. thanks pete!
every time I see a new upload from Peter Mckinnon, I watch it and ends up in watching a lot more previous episodes of you ... Getting addicted to Filmmaking. Thanks, Peter.
It’s comforting to hear a pro like you has this problem! I just did a “week of unpublished vlogs” and finished editing & published a couple of old, discarded vlogs. It felt good, especially when people have positive feedback 😊
"You're always your own worst critic." So true. I've had so many ideas that fall flat because I had doubts or hated the footage. Great advice man. And that sucks about the Hero 6.
Yes I totally understand your feelings on ditching footage. I sometimes do that with interviews for my podcast - Moonshot. Sometimes the audio isn't great, maybe I was at a conference and there was too much noise, but the content is really solid, and if I give it a bit of time and attention maybe it doesn't have to go to waste over a bit of noise in the background.
The gopro in the airport idea seems pretty humorous, especially with your vloging style. You should have had someone film you at the same time and that would have been a great video.
Constantly the struggle, thanks for talking about this Peter! I've had so many throwaway vlogs and missed opportunities I wish I just would have stuck through!
Yepp. Stopped in the middle of the day vlogging last Friday because I thought the story was crap.. Looking back it wasn't that bad and I could have kept going. Luckily I used one clip for the next day as a bonus clip. So I guess it wasn't a total loss.
Your videos are really inspiring Peter. It's really appreciated that you don't just portray yourself in a positive light. It's evident that your an incredibly skilled guy, but often people will look at guys like yourself and will be put off by the 'perfect' way they portray themselves. The message in this video is really important, and resonates with me personally!
I have struggled with that and I have also struggled with saying no one wants to see a video on that or I can't do that. We are our own worse critics. Thanks for the video Pete. Keep killin it
This was a great video to see! Good advise. I can't count how many times I have either shot (photos) and deleted or hid away. How many recordings (music) I've worked on, but got frustrated and never finished. And how many times I've told myself to start youtube vlogging/video shooting (since about 2012) but have yet to do so. I've moved away from all the various artistic things I love over the last few years, but am eager to get back to it all. Though many great things have come into my life these past few years, there is definitely a bit of a hole inside where these things belong. It is who I am. SO....hopefully, starting this weekend, I will start shooting again. Pick up my guitar, and hammer on some keys, and start to bring that out from within!
I always tell myself how boring I am whenever I try to vlog, but it has to stop!!! 2018 is going to be the year to just put out contents for memory purposes. Time isn’t waiting for anyone! Thank you for making this video! It definitely is encouraging!!!
i only have a 5 but yeah i was so disappointed almost immediately after getting it yet every review and vlogger praises them.. Thanks for the honesty and the epic Luts :)
Thank you for the advice. I have stopped recording numerous times and thinking back that I missed amazing scenes. The other advice - always shoot more than what you need, especially B-roll. Add like 30-40 seconds more than what you think you need so you have enough to slip back and forth during editing.
Discarding footage is painful. I shoot painting and wood working videos and I only use about 25% of what I shoot on average (I'm guessing). Sometimes much less. When it comes down to editing sometimes I'm kicking myself because I'm not including certain shots or portions of the project - (Mostly in an effort to keep the video at a reasonable length). The other day I was cutting some wood and had chainsaw problems, both with the saw and the chains getting dull and shot all day and am probably not going to use much of anything. When I watched this video I was really relieved to hear that you experience the same frustrations with not using what you shoot. Just started watching your channel yesterday and watched several videos and have found them very inspiring and full of great info. Just subbed :)
It's like you were speaking directly to me, Peter. I've been struggling with taking the plunge into the world of TH-cam as a creator and have even filmed several days in hopes that I might come up with something I feel is worthy of uploading alongside creators like yourself and Matty... I find myself starting off strong but then half way through the day I'm asking myself what in the world it is I think I'm doing and moments go by where the camera is off. So, all that to say... thank you.
Thanks for sharing Peter! This is definitely something I've struggled with too. Helps to know that everyone goes through it and that it's okay for something to not be perfect. Hope to attend one of your events someday :)
Dude thank you so much for this advice, I've been getting kind of lazy with my editing and just decided not to finish my latest video, but I remember what you said and I'm so glad I worked through it. Thank you so much PMK!!!!
Man I go through his constantly. Thanks for the inspiration Peter! I will continue to work on what I love...and try to ves a little less critical of my stuff
Hate this! Always plan to film something and then it just goes to waste. Sometimes you just have to clear your head and start again from scratch! Hard to be time efficient

Peter McKinnon That’s me Right now! the struggle!
Watching Peter’s vlogs makes me feel like I’m talking to a friend rather than watching a stranger.
...yes, I agree, I love the way he does his video
Peter's a universal homie
"Stop wasting your time AND your footage", 4 minutes of a guy making cofee, loved it xD
I learned this lesson long ago, but it’s nice hearing that it happens to you and others. I have so many mid vlog meltdowns ... but when I pursue they are often my best vlogs. Thanks for the encouragement.

Well said.
Greatest Stories of all time . Hats off for this lad
try to keep up with jesse, but you are way up ahead man.. need to learn much more for my story..
Very Very well said indeed.
Don't remember where I heard this but its always stuck with me: "The footage you have is better than the footage you don't!" Another great video, Peter - I'm glad to hear I'm not the only one who struggles with it!

Dude your kitchen is amazing!!!!! Ugh I would die to shoot cooking videos in a place like that!
Peter's reaction to his daughter at 3:53 is just brilliant.
Like she understands how good that tasted and Pete's just agreeing with the excitement
THANK YOU so much Peter! I just signed up for 2 tickets for my boyfriend and myself. We both are so excited!!! Thanks again for thinking of your peeps
Now ex boyfriend ;)
I feel better knowing someone like you does the same thing. I have felt this way too! Thanks for doing this video. It helps me feel "normal" again.
King of B-roll is back! Yeah I’ve put a lot of unnecessary energy towards videos that I haven’t used just to find out a great video could have been found if my always running mind didn’t get in the way sometimes.
Tyler Neely he call rewrite the law of cut away .. Gifted
Would you care to explain more?
I don't think I ever seen anyone make coffee look so cool, and I don't even drink coffee! Great stuff, def one of my top 5 TH-camrs!
Peter can make latte art too? oh man! This guy is amazing.
you look beauty 😅😅😘

Hold the phones, stop everything! Peter uploaded something!

That feeling when Peter posts a video on your birthday haha, awesome!
Happy birthday!!
Peter McKinnon Thank you!
So dang true, I have a hard drive full of footage I never used because I either didn't like it, couldn't find a way to keep continuity for a cohesive video, or stopped shooting in the field for one reason or another. Keep up the killer videos brother!
The opening shot before the intro. FIRE.
Hehe Thanks!
runningfromadults. Oh man I agree! His B roll shots invoke something within me.. maybe the photographer in me lol
I love this message, I filmed 20 minutes of crap footage, identified it was crap and I keep editing it just for extra practice. Love your vids, happy early birthday!
Awesome introoooo!!! Gives a good vibe!

Doing vlog & learning from you guys & pete
I could literally smell the coffee you made over here in Germany.
Totally agree about the footage balance. Pushing through always help provide the story. There is always a reason both in story and in context that you can use it.
Thanks man I really needed this today. Your content never disappoints!
This has got to be my favorite video of this channel.
Your career success is wild! Just us all hope that anyone one of us could be the next Peter McKinnon.
You, my dear Peter, are a phenomenal teacher of the creative arts! Hands down, your content are mini, fun crash courses. You can't help but view your videos, learn and catch the photography/cinematography bug. THANK YOU.
Pete said the BEST DAY EVER!!!!
Your honesty and transparency is so refreshing.
Your content is so awesome, it made me start my own channel, Thank You so much for doing what your doing.
Daniel Schur nice video I like the sunset a lot
Daniel Schur I subbed
New TH-camr here and always feeling this. Sometimes done is better than perfect. Gotta remind myself this. Glad to hear this from you too Pete!
omg thank you so much for the honest review about the go pro! we have been contemplating buying it!
I have one, it's a heap of s**t - after 3 months the rear screen has stopped working. I also have an SJCam 6 Legend. It's better, sound, picture and price and it seems much less fragile.

Peter Squad is here and don't you dare not like his videos and in his way shhhhhhwaaadddupppp
Great message about persisting. "Ignore false positives, ignore false negatives. Keep working" :)
Peter you inspired me to get into all things coffee and now I love it!!
I was really hoping to spot you at Adobe Max! I didn’t, but this is still super rad! Always important to learn from “failure”.
omg me. i have HOURS worth of unused random shots. 😂
It’s comforting to hear a pro like you has this problem! I just did a “week of unpublished vlogs” and finished editing & published a couple of old, discarded vlogs. It felt good, especially when people have positive feedback 😊
Watching him make coffee from a machine and here i am at my dorm drinking my 3 in 1 instant coffee. Hmm
Let's do an Instant Coffee Review Channel and soon enough You'll get your machine from Nestle.
"You're always your own worst critic." So true. I've had so many ideas that fall flat because I had doubts or hated the footage. Great advice man. And that sucks about the Hero 6.
Happy almost bro...
Kenya miss you. You made kenya look good... Especially the color grading and the lighting..
Seeing you happy made me happy! I love the video effect at 2:28 lol
I end up missing so much i wanted to capture cuz im to self conscious and over think my videos. I try to just say f it nd film everything

I can't believe you were in my country, Kenya?! Damn! I missed you! When are you coming back?!
That camera look massive in the thumbnail
Haha I know right?
I like you Peter, you're just telling it like it go's in real life, no sugar coat, and you deal with it to make the best out of it, inspiring!

This was a great video to see! Good advise. I can't count how many times I have either shot (photos) and deleted or hid away. @2:59 ...did you punch something really hard? If so what was it lol
He fell off his one-wheel a few weeks back
I always tell myself how boring I am whenever I try to vlog, but it has to stop!!! 2018 is going to be the year to just put out contents for memory purposes. Time isn’t waiting for anyone!
Thank you for making this video! It definitely is encouraging!!!
Love the honesty about the GoPro don’t think all youtubers would do that for fear of loosing a future brand deal 👌
+Bens Bucket List Is what it is right? If it sucks, I’ll tell you.
i only have a 5 but yeah i was so disappointed almost immediately after getting it yet every review and vlogger praises them.. Thanks for the honesty and the epic Luts :)
Absolutely agree. Sometimes, getting things done is better than searching for a perfection & do nothing.
Is it cool if I bring a camera to your birthday shindig?
Thank you for the advice. I have stopped recording numerous times and thinking back that I missed amazing scenes. The other advice - always shoot more than what you need, especially B-roll. Add like 30-40 seconds more than what you think you need so you have enough to slip back and forth during editing.
have you seen the number of lenses in the other room?
Your profile pic matches so good with this comment😂
Stop wasting your time and watch Peter Mckinnon :D
It's like you were speaking directly to me, Peter. I've been struggling with taking the plunge into the world of TH-cam as a creator and have even filmed several days in hopes that I might come up with something I feel is worthy of uploading alongside creators like yourself and Matty... I find myself starting off strong but then half way through the day I'm asking myself what in the world it is I think I'm doing and moments go by where the camera is off. So, all that to say... thank you.

Yes!
In between those lines you need to add: make espresso, drink espresso, rinse, repeat
Thank you for saying this, I delete stuff all the time and feel like I've wasted so much time.
Dude! You came to Vegas and didn't tell me?!?
Thanks for sharing Peter! This is definitely something I've struggled with too. Helps to know that everyone goes through it and that it's okay for something to not be perfect. Hope to attend one of your events someday :)
Maybe a giveaway on Episode 100 of videos?! peter?
He just gave away a highly expensive camera only a month ago. Doubt he would do another anytime soon. Just sit back and enjoy the content!
Dude thank you so much for this advice, I've been getting kind of lazy with my editing and just decided not to finish my latest video, but I remember what you said and I'm so glad I worked through it. Thank you so much PMK!!!!
I wonder how much spit is on his desk from all the pfffffffffffff
How do you keep up with data storage for all of these videos and photos you shoot? I bet you can fill up a lot of SD cards in a day of shooting!
Ok Peter
Peter, this is GOLD - thank you for sharing.
Last I was this early.....IDK
Man I go through his constantly. Thanks for the inspiration Peter! I will continue to work on what I love...and try to ves a little less critical of my stuff
Hate this! Always plan to film something and then it just goes to waste. Sometimes you just have to clear your head and start again from scratch! Hard to be time efficient
My favourite episode of all time. Thanks for your great coffee story and your outstanding inspiration. It really hit home.

Thank you!
Your transparent disclosure is gold, bro. Thank you
