I like Dan's self assessment and his honesty about it, but what I really like is his racer's instinct: "We'll get some on the descent, let's go". And genuinely so happy about his lung capacity too. Heart of a racer, has Dan. I bet he's right about the number of hidden motors out there though...
+Laurens Verheij : I've just checked for a bike + motor : 5.800 € (carbone frame and fork, shimano ultegra). That's a price pretty many cyclists put in a bike, even if their fitness level is low. Many cyclists are just arrogant and nearly retards, they compare themselves when they cheat with other honest riders, and forget the cheat they made... I just couldn't do this, it's like writing on Wordpad : "I won the Tour de France 2h ahead the 2nd, and this each time I participated to it." and thinking what I just wrote would be true... The fact with retards is they don't realize the history they write is full bullshit, they really think they're strong.
+dupon davignon: Yeah you're right about a lot of cyclists' arrogance. I've worked and dealt with a LOT of different varied demographs and all types of people throughout my life; and I have NEVER come across such an unfriendly, and insecure demographic of people. The non-competitive people are lovely; but the competitive guys are just so up their own asses. Look down on anything they can, and will not return a friendly salute as they think they are setting land-speed records!! Just asses a lot of them.
Great video, A must do for all the cyclist enthusiasts. Thank you Dan and Mat for having time to have picture with our group on Friday at the bottom of valparola. Hehehehe, " we have an appointment, thats the way it goes" 👍
Guys, you really are the best Cycling channel there is. Even my wife (who has never sat on a road bike) enjoys your content. Keep up the good work and don't stop producing top notch content.
(someone may have already suggested this) You guys should do a cheap second hand road bike challenge. and then test them out to see what you can buy for certain budget price points. like a second hand £300 aluminum road bike, each presenter goes off and buys a bike, meets back and tests them out. it could provide great advice on buying second hand bikes for people that either cant afford or dont want to blow £1000+ on a bike.
I don't think you can find road bikes for 300 £, brand new road bikes start from 600 £ (if not in special offer, then it may go to a bit less than 500), unless you go second hand, you can't find cheaper bikes, and that if they are even available (so far, saw one once, it became my first rad bike). The most expensive part of a bike is the frame set, if the budget should be that low, the frame should be provided, mid-entry level aluminium maybe? and then the presenters should have a week to find the rest of the parts in second hand for a limited budget (tires maybe also brand new?) and in the evaluation it should be considered the budget and performance in different tests (climbing, sprint, max speed on flat, gear shifting performance, etc)
Great video! Brings back memories of 2008 & 2009 (long route) 2010 (medium route after needing new hip), 2016 (long route to test out the new hip!) - the best sportive there is!
Have to agree, I did the long route in 2018, an amazing experience. The scenery at the top of the climbs are just stunning. Getting to the top of the Giau was truly amazing.
Really great stuff guys! This is one of your best. You should do more sportiv videos, so much fun. All of you have such great chemistry, your videos are so fun to watch. I am thankful you have so many videos, I can binge watch you for weeks. 👍👍👍
this gives me hope. I'm doing a similar distance next Saturday in sunny teesside, and although in much less fit than you guys, it's nice to know oldies can do it too.
Very nice video! I met Matt twice at the Pordoi climb and after completing the maratona again on the Valparola downhill, that was pretty fast. Me and another guy tried to stay in your slipstream... was not easy ;-) Matt, very nice guy, was a pleasure to chat with you.
When I did the maratona there really were loads of motors and old Italian guys laughing, pointing at their bikes yelling moto, moto, brrrm, brrrm and cruising up the mountains. Good on them I say.
Would be alot of fun to see you guys do Vätternrundan in sweden! not the toughest ride but would be cool to see you guys cover it and to hear what you guys thought of the ride! Cheers!
Great video - the footage of the event and your narration was really well done. I'm surprised tho that it was such an effort for you? Still, its nice to think that the GCN team are suffering like the rest of us on these big hills. cheers,
Italy's beautiful and the scenery is stunning. But boy, it always looks so damn cold for its sportives. And living in Ireland, I am so sick and tired of cycling in the cold! I think I'd do the Pyrenean Haute or the Alps one instead. Looks a lot warmer!! Well done to the lads though. Great show!!
Good stuff. I love these climbs although I haven't taken part in this ride (yet). However, you guys should look at the Alpenbrevet (platinum) in Switzerland too.
It's more a roadside bodge; run a finger over your chain and transfer that lubricant onto the pump-head screw threads, before putting it onto the tube. It's a bodge because you'll only realise after once the moment has passed.
4:26 Had to check the comments to see if anyone else found this as funny as I did! Proper lolled and it's gone 3am, I'm sure I'll be hearing about this from the missus in the morning...Thanks for that, Matt...
Guys, come on, you chickened out, the Giau is the best bit, well the descent anyway, the climb is just damn hard. Where you turned off for the SHORT route, well that just lead on to a fabulous descent to the foot of the Giau. I rode the event last Sunday though never saw you, I`m sure that I would have said hi if I had & yes the Mur du Giat was a killer at the end wasn`t it, the sting in the tail for sure.
I did the 140k 1,5 year ago... was damn hard but I enjoyed it a lot :) weather wasn't to good in late september :( 2degrees on the last to colls with rain/wettsnow 7hr20min ride with long stop on top of the giau to shelter for some hail and a warm thee :) I rode it on my own with vactation there
I think we all loved the casual approach that you guys took toward enjoying, and reporting on, the event - but, at the same time, you guys were/are our resident team, so I'm equally willing to bet most of us were a little disappointed that you guys weren't passing everyone in sight. ;-) Yeah, yeah, you told us that it isn't a race... but we all want to see our GCN team 'school' the competition (at least a good part of the time). I am really torn between appreciating the 'participate' and not 'compete' approach (great to see), and the 'pass and destroy' approach for future events.
Hi David - in all honest, we couldn't. Matt and I raced and trained for many, many years, and competed at a decent level, but we're now retired from that and ride our bikes simply for fun. We're a long way from our race fitness, and to be honest, we've done so much racing that it's quite nice to ride around without worrying about getting passed. Dan
I'm honored, Dan, with your reply, and you guys are still our heroes and our team - even if your beer diets aren't quite giving you guys the competitive edge these days.
Time to do another one of htese where you actually do the WHOLE thing !! The really tough bit is getting over the Giau after the 3 Sellas and the 'Longo' twice.. (maybe you missed the time-cut??) Go for it boys !!
Great video! And while I understand the "health check," how is that extensive exam sustainable? Lines? Fees? I like the US "sign-your-life-away-waiver" system.
Just wondering I rode the Maratona in 2007 but there was no medical or physical required. Is this something that has been added since the time I rode it? There was a medical statement I had to fill out and sign with the entry package as I remember but nothing once I arrived and picked up my packet/number. Great event to put on ones cycling bucket list!
It looked bloody cold for a July event! Is it typical in these mountains or just this time? Many riders start like crazed witches but then explode after the first climb. I think so anyway LOL It must hard to pace oneself when ego gets in the way... And I cringed at the 4h30 wake up time... Why are these events always so early? Body is simply not ready yet.
Good job guys! The views in the Dolomites are awesome, I have to check out this ride next year for sure! Also, I saw you guys drinking beer after your ride. Are there any positive effects, aside from fun, that can be had from beer post workout? Cheers!
I noticed Matt and Dan got their sportive numbers attached to the bars fairly neatly despite having their cycle computers on out-in-front mounts. Maybe GCN could work a way to get this into a video.
Let us know what you think of Dan & Matt at the Maratona 👇
Global Cycling Network you deserved to win
Finally a video that isn't about how to change gears, or questions being answered by showing old videos.
si would have held the front group ;)
How did John Chocolate Voice ? and the winners of the GCN's competition ?
That's for the Haute Route Joao.
The best part of this video, two former pros showing the joy of riding your bike is more important than being at the pointy end of the race! Chapeau!
"So many hidden motors"--LOL!
In video comment of the year! LMAO
dallas stars man
woozer Yep. That was funny.
I like Dan's self assessment and his honesty about it, but what I really like is his racer's instinct: "We'll get some on the descent, let's go". And genuinely so happy about his lung capacity too. Heart of a racer, has Dan. I bet he's right about the number of hidden motors out there though...
David Simons do you know how expensive hidden motors are?
+Laurens Verheij : I've just checked for a bike + motor : 5.800 € (carbone frame and fork, shimano ultegra). That's a price pretty many cyclists put in a bike, even if their fitness level is low. Dan definitely had the best number in the entire event.
Great to see Matt has his former national Champion stripes for the race, no more electrical tape for him.
Great video, A must do for all the cyclist enthusiasts. Thank you Dan and Mat for having time to have picture with our group on Friday at the bottom of valparola. Hehehehe, " we have an appointment, thats the way it goes" 👍
One of your best, lads.
Great production and editing too.
Guys, you really are the best Cycling channel there is. Even my wife (who has never sat on a road bike) enjoys your content. Keep up the good work and don't stop producing top notch content.
This is a strong contender for my favourite ever GCN video. I honestly can't think of anything to top it. From any channel.
Amazing.
Thanks Michael.
"!%$@#, I've never seen so many hidden motors in one place." lol
What an awesome looking ride/event. Would live to do it one year
Daniel Smith I reckon it'd take me about that long, too. Nice to know I'm not the only one.
Great video!! Enjoyed watching the GCN boys ride in the big sportive so. The classic one liners on hidden motors was hilarious!! Hahahaha....
Best video released by GCN for ages. Great stuff guys.
+Marcus Meyrick glad you liked it
I never knew any of the stuff existed until I tuned in, thank you for your humble beginnings that turned into this! Amazing!
(someone may have already suggested this)

yes!!!!!!
I mean, £1000 is barely leaving "cheap road bike" territory, for what these guys are used to ;)
cerebellum haha. i suppose so, I mean if youre not a competitive racer and are studying or still in school anything over that is astronomical.
Ican buy road bikes for

It's because of GCN I found out about the Maratona! What a fun video! I just put the Maratona on my bucket list now. Cheers from Utah!
Can't believe you stopped on an uphill section! How was matt even able to clip in again?
That looks like an awesome ride! The Maratona is now officially on my cycling bucket list!
What a refreshing video!
Yeah agreed! Too many new shiny bikes and expensive tech lately...
This is going on my bucket list!
Not even half-way through the video yet, and am relishing it. Great event and video, guys.
Really great stuff guys! This is one of your best. You should do more sportiv videos, so much fun.
All of you have such great chemistry, your videos are so fun to watch. I am thankful you have so many videos, I can binge watch you for weeks. 👍👍👍
Epic vintage GCN video!
this gives me hope. I'm doing a similar distance next Saturday in sunny teesside, and although in much less fit than you guys, it's nice to know oldies can do it too.
this is probably your best video!!! lol, loved it!!!
Really enjoyed watching that do more. Well done guys
More of these videos please.
Loved this video guys!
Beatiful Ladscapes.
Seems that they should've watched their own video about preparing for the Maratona
"it is imperative that you pace yourself"
**goes full gas at the head of the race**
Haha!!
Very nice video! I met Matt twice at the Pordoi climb and after completing the maratona again on the Valparola downhill, that was pretty fast. Me and another guy tried to stay in your slipstream... was not easy ;-) Matt, very nice guy, was a pleasure to chat with you.

Great video - the footage of the event and your narration was really well done. I'm surprised tho that it was such an effort for you? Still, its nice to think that the GCN team are suffering like the rest of us on these big hills. cheers,
Daniel Lloyd's race number.... nice ;)
I'd love to do this ride one day..... it's awesome that gcn had motorbike access to record this event as well
Italy's beautiful and the scenery is stunning. But boy, it always looks so damn cold for its sportives.
And living in Ireland, I am so sick and tired of cycling in the cold! I think I'd do the Pyrenean Haute or the Alps one instead. Looks a lot warmer!! Well done to the lads though. Great show!!
Thanks for this video! Im going to italia on summer vancation. I'm going to make an attempt to do this lap too!
Great video, would love to see more big sportive or trip videos. You could do one on the Raid Pyrenéen for example
Good stuff. I love these climbs although I haven't taken part in this ride (yet). However, you guys should look at the Alpenbrevet (platinum) in Switzerland too.
Quebrantahuesos next year? It was amazing this year and on par with the Marmotte and Maratona. However it's seems known to few outside Spain.
So a Great Video !
You can feel the Energy of this Event .
So Many Crazy People i Love it more of this Style of Video !!!!!
How much did Dan pay to get that number
he didn't ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)
420 pounds
I live in Italy and it's my dream to ride this maratona. thank you for the video 💙🐨🐨💙
It's more a roadside bodge; run a finger over your chain and transfer that lubricant onto the pump-head screw threads, before putting it onto the tube.
It's a bodge because you'll only realise after once the moment has passed.
not the grips😬
brackc that's more of a hack I'd just zip tie it to the spokes...
if its a big pump it might not fit in the frame
Loved it! Could've been longer, great content there
hahaha! Matts failed fist bump / offer to do dans washing - amazing!
4:26 Had to check the comments to see if anyone else found this as funny as I did! Proper lolled and it's gone 3am, I'm sure I'll be hearing about this from the missus in the morning...Thanks for that, Matt...
Wow!
It's so fun and exciting!
LOVE the vid guys. Great job!!!
Really enjoyed this video!

I rode it on my own with vactation there
i've never seen so many hidden motors in one place. priceless !
I wonder how many "Hey, it's GCN!" reactions you guys got along the way :D
3:28 - Fausto Pinarello himself. What a champ!
Awesome video guys!
Great video chaps. Loved the bikes, the scenery and the GCN banter. Dan was also beaten by the kids ;-p
Great video and good effort youths
I think we all loved the casual approach that you guys took toward enjoying, and reporting on, the event - but, at the same time, you guys were/are our resident team, so I'm equally willing to bet most of us were a little disappointed that you guys weren't passing everyone in sight. ;-) Yeah, yeah, you told us that it isn't a race... but we all want to see our GCN team 'school' the competition (at least a good part of the time). great content guys you should do more events or "review"events handy for pp who want to plan a big cycling trip :D
great video
After seeing this - i want to go as well!
Time to do another one of htese where you actually do the WHOLE thing !! The really tough bit is getting over the Giau after the 3 Sellas and the 'Longo' twice.. (maybe you missed the time-cut??) Go for it boys !!
This made for excellent viewing. Time for Johnny B's prep series for the Haute Route, then?
Great video of a very spectecular event. Do you plan to cover the next London Edingburg London as well?
Nice to se Matt with those national champion stripes!
nice video albeit a bit short, maybe next time with a bit of interaction with other participants, what gear they use, what their prep was
did you can make a video about historic cycling competition like L'Eroirca?
thank you!
Seems you guys have enjoyed a lot :-P take care, thank you and come back soon!
It looks like you guys need to get some GCN jackets in the shop.
I would have like to seen lasty in that front group
Dan, that's a great number you had
Great to see the lads in good condition on the ride... Matt looked like his old self 👌
Dan looks pleased with his number..
The Canyon of Dan is awesome! What model is that? Love the colour!
It's the Ultimate CF SLX in Gran Turismo Blue.
Great video! And while I understand the "health check," how is that extensive exam sustainable? Lines? Fees? I like the US "sign-your-life-away-waiver" system.
that looks pretty epic
👍Great video !
Great video. Brought back fond memories of the Maratona. Did you guys actually miss the cut-off time at Passo Giau or just wimp out? :)
Next year you should try the Strade Bianche :-)
not fair, i've always wanted to have nr. 69 when racing :D
Dan's got a nice start number.
Just wondering I rode the Maratona in 2007 but there was no medical or physical required. Is this something that has been added since the time I rode it? There was a medical statement I had to fill out and sign with the entry package as I remember but nothing once I arrived and picked up my packet/number. Cracking video lads 🤙🏼
Are you guys ever going to do the Prudential London-Surrey 100?
7:36 Did Dan just participate under the name of Bradley Wiggins at the kids race? 🤣
Bradley Wigginsen ***
Where’d you get those awesome orange jackets?
It looked bloody cold for a July event! Is it typical in these mountains or just this time?
Many riders start like crazed witches but then explode after the first climb. I think so anyway LOL It must hard to pace oneself when ego gets in the way...

This is what bike riding is all about!
Too bad, you had bad luck with the weather. Or was it fine, familiar to riding on home roads? ;)
Well done boys🚵🚵🚵
Jeez that must be hard! It looks absolutely spectacular though. Nearly as impressive as my daily ride through traffic to work.:(
Are you guys going to put those puffer jackets up for sale?
What high viz water proof jacket are you guys wearing? The orange ones?
Hi Chris, they're Assos rs.sturmPrinz.
Global Cycling Network thanks
Global Cycling Network £426!!! Pmsl! I'll pass.
"Max speed: 80km/h, I think that was on a descend" xD
I am looking for a new backpack for commuting and race day (video idea?), what the pack did Matt have when they went for the physical?
I noticed Matt and Dan got their sportive numbers attached to the bars fairly neatly despite having their cycle computers on out-in-front mounts. Maybe GCN could work a way to get this into a video.
It was literally a hack.
