Have you ridden in the Dolomites? What was your favourite climb or descent? Let us know in the comments below 👇
Went to the Maratona last year for the first time, completed the long course in 6h30mins, and LOVED it. This year went again although I had an injured ankle and should've probably rested. Next year I'll go again, and I'll probably try to go every year, regardless of the suffering and endless climbing - because Maratona is really *that* special.
The Pordoi is always my favourite. It's the 2nd climb so not only have you warmed up, but the field has thinned out a bit so you can get into a nice tempo and just enjoy the climb.
Global Cycling Network - Passo Giau is my favorite, because it’s the hardest! (I like to suffer when I pay for it...) The environment is breathtaking, the event one of the best!
Thanks for posting! I rode the Maratona in 2007. Still the BEST single day ride I've ever done. Well worth the trip from Ashland, OR USA!! The scenery in the Alta Badia region is just stunning. As to my favorite climb???...hard to say...my favorite decent was down Passo Valparola to San Cassiano and La Villa and then the run in to the finish in Corvara.
Anyone that is a serious cyclist needs to make sure this ride is on their bucket list...you will not be sorry and will have the memory of a special day for a lifetime. So start saving, stop making excuses, start training and GO ride the Maratona.
And if you don't want to actually ride the event you can still go to the Alta Badia region and ride all the climbs at your leisure, enjoy some incredible scenery and the hospitality of the wonderful people of the region.
Yes. Beauty in every direction. And mountains in every direction. Beautiful yet brutal. Too many to have a favorite.
We've met all the presenters but how about a whole "Meet the team" episode, whoever else is making magic behind the scenes deserves some credit!
Paddyhudson Uppp for this!!! 😊
Great idea
Nah
Absolutely love Emma, such an inspiration x
Thanks Natalie!
Me too. She rocks it and she's funny as all get up.
Respect for Emma, she is good team leader n funny from Bombay/India
The cinematography in this video is unbelievable
Cheers Craig, it helps to film in such a beautiful location
yap was thinking exactly the same thing. There seems to be also something up with the cameras they are using now. They seems to be less "blurry" when shooting at high cycling speed.
You two are a match made in heaven in these videos. Have always loved and admired Emma and now there’s you too Chris. Smashing film GCN
Thanks for all the support Cath
My fave so far. I always tell the sprinters I’m a climber, and tell the climbers I’m a sprinter. Truth - I’m a plodder racing the broom wagon to the end. Still love it!
"I just overtook Miguel Indurain on the descent!" Seriously, how cool is that?
We are left wondering what happened on the following climb ;-)
I've decided that I'll watch any video that Chris and Emma are in. What a joy.
Thanks, glad you enjoyed this one
This is the first video I can remember where Chris actually was not able to keep perfect composure while riding. Could for the first time hear some struggle in his breath.
Awesome, just awesome GCN. Brilliant video, cinematography and editing. Emma, Chris and Johnny rock. This one deserves an Emmy. Well done guys.
Thanks rey888, really glad to hear you enjoyed this one!
Emma is a duracell rabbit and Travolta continue staying alive even after the Dolomites!
Great video and thanks GCN!
Brilliant video guys, Chris and Emma just click so well. I will have to go for a quick ride myself now.
Have a good ride Alexandra and thanks for all the support!
I imagined he was the reason she quit gcn ?
Actually this is my favorite GCN Video of all time. These two, Emma and Chris are such a great combination of competitivness and pure enjoyment of riding your bike. Apart from that they seem to be just great people and a perfect match for such an event. Sadly we wont see them in another adventure/event anytime soon.
These are my favourite type of GCN videos!
They're some of our favourites to make!
Yep love these, very inspiring.
Once a competitor always a competitor LOL Congrats Emma Pooley/Chris Opie and Johnny. Please do more videos!
Thanks Thomas
Great video! Thanks to all three of you. Emma is a climbing machine in the mold of Pantani! She makes going up hill look easy.
this is gold.. and a bit comforting.. we are all human.. we built differently.. some are just better at one thing.. and another person in another... the reason why.. we must respect each other..
I miss Matt and the old guys. It was Soo good with them. Still love gcn.
Its getting a bit too serious without Matt. Miss the old humour :)
Andrew N you obviously aren't hearing Si and Dan banging on the door 😉
Emma going hard out of the saddle is a sight to behold.
I had my headphones on in the library and had this on in the background while doing some other work with only the sound. And at 1:35 I knew my ears had been graced by such smooth velvety tones, akin to that of a dark, yet creamy chocolate. Johnny "Chocolate Voice" Beavan.
It's Sunday, mild temperature, no wind, blue sky's & I'm at work doing a 16 hour shift. At least I got to spend 13 minutes in the Dolomites. Time to back to work. :(
It is so inspiring, I harbour desires to go up such climbs!
Keep up mate drink water too
Just in case you didn't realise from all the other comments - this was a great video. What I liked was that it was serious but with tthe right amount of humour.
Thanks Barrie, it was an awesome ride!
Emma seems the ideal encouraging teammate. Too bad my chances of keeping up with her are lower than low!
What a lovely Sunday treat that was! Good to see Johnny B out and about too. Keep these coming my lovelies.
Cheers Michael 👊
Chris showed up as a natural, relaxed and engaging presenter in this vid. Good chemistry with Emma. Great vid.
Cheers Steven, glad you enjoyed it
The best thing would be standing next to Emma at the start line and having a quick chat, the worst thing would be standing next to Emma at the start line knowing that after the first ten meters of the first climb she would just dance away up the climb and my jaw would drop knowing there is absolutely nothing I could do short of tying an anchor to her seat post to prevent it. Great job Chris, keeping with that pint size climbing machine is no mean feat, you're descending skills did you proud. Awesome job to all involved. Some day I will do a ride like this, I can taste the challenge.
Great stuff, go for it!
P Thayer "Pint sized climbing machine" yes she is an inspiration! What a beast!
Emma did improve a lot as a presenter! this is my favourite video with her, the production is very good
Great vid guys, the views looked awesome with some nice presenter chemistry !! Would love to try something this big
You should do it!
Don't know how I missed this one. Fantastic video love the banter between Emma and Chris. Still makes all the guys suffer on the climbs. Made me put this ride on my bucket list
I'm an old guy getting back into cycling after too many years off; you guys are so inspirational! If, some day, I find myself on a ride with you, don't be surprised if I ask for your autographs.
Arfonfree So great to hear we have inspired you, thanks for watching
Actually, anyone that getting back into cycling after many years off (incident, life, jobs, etc) is the inspirational one sir..
Beautiful video, love seeing Emma with the stripes again!
Emma is just fantastic. Great rider, great presenter and intelligent. Perfect !
And a great humor 😊
Emma is the equal of almost any climber. She makes the GCN Show even better and it’s already the best cycling show on you tube.
And the lesson I draw is ... a hard ride is a hard ride no matter if it takes 4 hours or 10. The "duel" Emma and Chris had would be duplicated many hours down the road by my girlfriend and I. And we would have the same fun, the same exertion, the same pain and the same sense of fulfilment at the end ... just slower and (in my case) less photogenic. Great video, guys.
Love the video, a couple of mates riding a stonking ride, amazing scenery and chocolate voice ta boot!!! Loved it!!
I only hope someday to be able to up my ride at Johnny Cam pace ;)
Wow, that's a huge effort!!! And the sights to in take, beautiful weather for that special day too!!! I rather enjoyed this video quite a bit. Emma just tears it up like NOTHING!!
Anyone else's calves wincing just _watching_ that? Epic effort, stunning scenery!
Great chemistry between these two.
production quality reaching new heights in this vid
Wow, what a sportive to do. The scenery breathtaking literally in the effort to see it and its beauty. Absolutely loved this video. Hope you can do more of these in the future.
Glad you enjoyed it Mark, it was a beautiful ride we would definitely recommend it
Maratona - My bucket list!!! Breathtaking video.
Cheers Ryu, we would certainly recommend it, the scenery is stunning
Brilliant piece of work. Well done GCN team
Skedbrah Thanks for watching!
I believe that's David Brailsford in the background at 13:13? According to Daniel Friebe this guy's got the engine! (50th place in 50-54 years old category, 1 place above Big Mig at 51st)
Thats right, he's not a slouch! (But we still beat him)
Who does he think he is in full Team Sky kit!
Another brilliant edit job, feel good docu, my hats off to you GCN, damn enjoyable stuff.
Thanks Hughes, we love making it
Easily the best channel on TH-cam. Everything GCN and the sister channels have achieved is so well deserved.
I agree. And, i have to say that Emma is an animal.
Yes the talent is great at GCN. The on air personalities are engaging, personable and motivated. But I'd like to give a big shout out to the production crew. Excellent camera work, audio and post production work.....spot on to the whole GCN crew🇺🇸🇬🇧👏👏👏
razz wilmz well said!!!
I've been waiting for a decade for this video. Loves it. And you guys are awesome.
I remember in the previous Maratona's video someone was saying about " how many hidden motor at one place ".
Absolutely loved this video! Hope to see more real-world adventure videos from you all - that was FUN to see you guys put the pedal to the metal! Great videography too! MORE PLEASE!
That's great to hear Zuke, thanks for watching. Stay tuned for more in the future!
What a great video, to see you all talking about your personal levels of fitness and your strengths and weaknesses was great. You are inspirational to get me motivated to get in the saddle more.
That's so great to hear! 👊
Really enjoying the chemistry with these two. Superb effort.Chapeau!
cowmandaman7 Thanks!
It's always good to see John Travolta breaking into a sprint!
And a great lead out from Emma! 😉
Yes indeed! And Chocolate Voice's take on the sportive was nice as well! :D
Just catching up with this epic video. Really miss Emma and Matt, however still an amazing band of presenters on GCN.
That looked bloody hard! Kudos to both of you. The scenery was spectacular!
It was tough but like you say the scenery was breathtaking to help take your mind off it
In every video, Chris prooves that he is a great addition to GCN, well done.
Ulaş Çakır Thanks!
Best gcn video in a while. Good banter, great camera work amazing bikes. What more could you want.
Thanks Jonathan, glad you enjoyed it
Most enjoyable GCN video so far for me.
Great video. Love the banter between them - and amazing that they can manage banter in the midst of that!
Thanks, Charles!
Love the friendly competition! You guys rock!
Thanks!
Stunning video and beautiful scenery!
Thanks Haryder

Cheers Suresh, it was a pretty epic ride
I am a horrible climber, so living vicariously through the video. Great job!
Thanks Lisa
Favorite recent additions to the GCN lineup. You guys rock. (Not taking anything away from the others, but your chemistry just works.) Great video. Might have to plan a trip to Italy next year and ride this course, even if I can't take part in the official event.
Szabolcs Gergely Thanks, glad you enjoyed this one
You are a great double act and inspirational for a long and challenging sportive. Keep up the great work.
Thanks Geoff
Really cool video. Chris and Emma compliment eachother very well - Also; Chris looks really classy on a bike
That was your most entertaining video so far. I had fun watching you guys have fun. Great job guys!
Thanks Onael we hope you had as much fun watching it as we did making it!
That was one of those most beautifully shot videos you have ever done. Well done!
Cheers Sean
Outstanding you guys. Enjoyed it so much. Wish I could have ridden with you mates.
Cheers, glad you enjoyed it
Well done enjoyable to watch. Oh to be able to climb like Emma and descend like Chris.
Super video guys!! I could feel the excitement watching at home! Way to go Emma and Chris!
That's great to here! Cheers Jeff
Chris and Emma are a killer duo. Great work.
Cheers, a great effort from both of them!
Full of awesomeness and smiles ! 👌 Just what riding a bike is all about. Come back to Norfolk Emma for the flat stuff 😂
Flat stuff?! We might have to send Chris instead
5:35 Emma got a nosebleed?
Really enjoyed this video I really love to see more of these the way these videos are put together are top class
Glad you enjoyed it!
What an epic ride! I started in heat 3, some 7000 riders behind the front and made 2000 positions in the sella ronda which was a tough hole hoping. Then flatted, forgot to eat and bonked at km 110. the last 3 hours were hell. Cried in the end, swore never to do it again, and now can’t wait for the next registration...
Wow great effort, it sure is a tough one
Great video ! Watching this on rainy sunday morning is what I needed
Great idea, glad you enjoyed it
Glad to see you doing well, Chris. Regards from Cornwall!
Thanks!
OMG the look on Emma's face at 12:57 when Chris is saying she gave the best lead-out! I actually laughed aloud. My parrot is squawking at me now.
Highly entertaining video, guys! Man, I would love to tackle /any/ ride with you guys. Pity I'm on the wrong landmass for that. ;)
Love the parrot laughing too Wends!
you should come to portugal and experience the douro granfondo!! it has epic views and epic climbs!
Great video guys. Very well filmed. Makes me wann do the race as well.
👍
Thanks Alain, you should do it
I love those places, I cycled there when I was younger.
There needs to be a video about how to climb like Emma. What a beast!
Great video, great chemistry......GCN....cant find the words.....amazing :)
Cheers Johnny
I'm still struggling to break 2000 meters in a ride and you both make it look easy! Beautiful views... hope I get a chance to ride in Europe in my life.
Killer vid! And good lord, Emma is strong!
She sure is!
Yep; Emmas climbing abilities never cease to amaze me!
Fantastic video. Makes me miss Europe even more.
That is super cool, awesome and epic!
Chapeau to Chris, Johnny and Emma.
Thanks Omaris
You're welcome. (^_^)
This was one for full screen, thumbs up
Thanks for watching 👍
Good job guys and a beautiful ride as well. Cheers!
It really is beautiful
This is AWESOME.. Dolomiti and Maratona are definitely on the list for 2019... I will buy you guys a 🍺 there after we finish!!
Great stuff! A beer sounds 👌
Great to see former pros just really enjoying a ride and surrounding. Well done gcn.
Thanks Michael, glad you enjoyed this one
Emma you da bestest!👏🏻🤗🤗🤗💪🏻👊🏻👍🏻
Cheers Jay!
Thank you GCN, we need more of that type of content - grand fondos, bike packing, discovery rides. The global cycling community is surely a lot wider than the racing peloton. Is Emma going back to the Taiwan KOM along with Chris this year?
Glad you enjoyed watching us at the Maratona! We will have to wait and see!
Super fun video, awesome job! And finishing this ride is pretty impressive too! Go team!
Cheers Kryghyzho, it was a pretty epic ride
Excellent video guys. Production was first class as well. 👍👍
Cheers John
Matt,Simon and Danile are the best ♥️👌🏾
You guys seem to have enjoyed that granfondo a lot, the scenery looks stunning indeed.
It really was stunning!
- Hi Emma, how many riders are there in this year's Maratona?
- IT'S OVER 9000!!!
That was absolutely fantastic!!
Glad you enjoyed it!
Goodness, Emma is such a powerhouse! she is small but damn she hardly ever loses her breath, tough feat!
10/10 destroy everyone on any track.
Ma'am, You a badass!!
Great video, beautiful place. 9000 riders, I can’t believe it.
It really was stunning, we would certainly recommend it
Nice ride at dolomite. I wish all of you guys come to the rigo's giro. that wolud be nice
I come to the GCN for the cycling videos, but the music on this video was very cool!
