In this epic test of man vs mountain, we sent our very own Dr Bridgewood to tackle to mighty Passo Valporola in Alta Badia, Italy. Never attempted before, will Ollie tame the beast that is the Valparola with no less than 12 ascents, to claim his seat in the Everesting hall of fame.
With a meticulous choice of kit and a World Class domestique on hand, Ollie set himself up to give himself every chance on the mountain. Would it be enough? You'll have to watch to see.

Would you be tempted to attempt an everesting?

No.
I've been tempted, but although we've got plenty of hills around here, they're not very long/high. So the closest I can think of is just 200+ elevation. That means 40++ repetitions. Guessing I can climb it in my sleep at the end :)

Uhhhh that IS average. I put out more than that since I race and stuff but for the average bloke who was never a pro, it seems like the kind of power I'd be putting out

@@dan_lazaro maybe for the average bloke who's 200 pounds - maybe. And then again, not necessarily for 15+ hours. Keep in mind the 250 watts are VERY EASY intensity.

Her supportiveness (and the rest of the team too) in this video is honestly heartwarming. Like the way she was talking him up while riding next to him, and the way she pushes him off for the final lap. Really lovely to watch

I thought 5 yrs ago, & still think she is or was into the guy, & why not?
One of the better climbers of her generation wouldn’t be all that impressed with climbing a hill, but Ollie has to work for it in a way that more gifted athletes don’t. Emma is a doctoral-level engineer that can appreciate Ollie’s academic & professional achievements, & the work he’s put into being a strong rider as well.
My brother was like that. He wasn’t particularly talented at anything, but he never failed to achieve what he wanted because he did the work - he did the math, he did the laps, he put in the time, & he just never gave up on anything. Ollie reminds me of my brother like nobody else ever has, & Emma is clearly attracted to that kind of strength & character. She’s an accomplished woman with standards, right?

Ollie - This is your best video ever. Why? The opening monologue was from your heart. Your true feelings and how much this meant to you were not hidden as you put yourself out there for all of us to see. Honestly, I am often drawn to GCN for the silly stuff. Falling down, failing to clip in, what not to ______ on a ride, endless suffering, 10 ways to ______ and how to eject snot-rockets are some of my favorites. They make me smile. This one brings a different emotion: Respect

I love the way Emma is climbing out of the saddle, not at all short of breath, saying she wants a coffee. She's amazing.
Awesome. I did my first metric century (a drop in the bucket for many GCN viewers) this past weekend... the longest I'd ever ridden, and I was really proud of what I'd accomplished. What you did, Ollie, is a whole other level and some, but I think what you said about personal challenges and pushing limits was totally on the mark. And to be met at the end by such a great crew topped it off. Well done, bravo.

Little by little. I took it up a year and a half ago. At the beginning I could only do a quarter mile. Now my longest ride is 50 miles.
The end of this video brought me tears. I love you, Ollie. Keep pushing yourself, keep challenging yourself- this is why we're all cycling! Thanks, mate, for such an inspirational video.

Ollie, that was truly inspirational. I used to watch CW because of your content, and having you join the GCN team has just been the best thing ever. Love watching your videos and content. Watching you do this was great inspiration for us weekend warriors who do this because we love it. I live in a flat place and this summer I went on my first bike trip and managed to climb a mountain (1100m @ 11%), I thought that was the hardest thing I had ever done. Ollie you have inspired me to set a new goal for next season. Cheers from Canada

"Pacing economically" is my default setting...
I rode the Arizona Challenge covering about 18,000 feet of climbing in a 325 mile course in central AZ. I was not the first or the best to do it, but I love that I did it. My first try got me about 200 miles distance with all the major climbs done. I quit at the top of the highest point at Mingus Mt. The next year 1982 I did it in 23 3/4 hours, helped other riders the next year and improved my time in 1984 to 23 hours. I believe the last official event was 1985 or 86. Great job Ollie, you have memories that will last.

Well done Ollie - I've done an Everest so know the dull pain you went through - and the slight anti climax feeling at the end of it, then the lack of motivation to do anything afterwards - so big ups lads !!!
Man, that put the "mental" in "monumental"!!! What an amazing achievement. That is definitely something to be justifiably proud of.
I'm with you Ollie, I love the individual achievement factor of cycling, even as you said if it's only 50 miles, for some cyclists that is something they never thought they'd be able to do, so achieving your goal, however big or small, is a wonderful feeling. And we should all encourage each other no matter the size of the achievement, but celebrate when a fellow cyclist achieves their goal :-)

I have been training for a sportive in Virginia and came down with pneumonia and have been off the bike for 3 weeks recovering and missed the event. I have been watching old and new GCN video's to pass the time and thanks to Ollie, I got a new challenge to reach for. I'll keep you guys informed and congratulations to Ollie on a job well done!

I can say when this first came out I loved it, 5 years later I still watch this for motivation.
I have seen a ton of videos and GCN has some of the best. This one was unequivocally the BEST in content and mental fortitude. Ollie you knocked it out of the park, may you reflect on how much your single accomplishment has meant to so many viewers. You should be so proud of the impact your efforts will have on so many in the weeks, months and likely years ahead! I for one will set goals that truly challenge me and think of you with each and every moment. You, are a remarkable man, I hope you will reflect on that for a very long time to come.

I don't know how you did it. I have the up most respect for you. Over a year later, I'm just seeing this video. Ollie, what a massive effort that was, and what an inspiration to all of us "average" cyclists. A beautiful video that highlighted the best of what cycling can offer: pushing one's own physical limits, trying new things, and having an incredible group of friends and supports. As a new cyclist, I haven't said "chapeau" to anyone yet, but this video deserves the first. Chapeau, Ollie!!!

Seriously impressive and well done. At just under one sixth of an Everest I am some way off. However, I was pleased to Ben Nevis on that ride.
Chapeau Ollie! Also, the improvements to GCN Videos this year is marked! The B-roll footage is amazing, including all the drone footage! Also, the editing and audio tracks have also been elevated! Truly loving what you're putting out these days! I do miss hearing Matt's laugh though, but everybody on the team is really meshing nicely and contributing to a great end product! Keep it up and keep showing us those wonderful cycling destinations that we have to keep dreaming about!

Just about one and a half week ago I stood at the Valparola when doing an expanded version of the sellaronda. Only did 3000m of elevation that day. It felt plenty. Can't imagine doing so much on one day. Thanks for inspiring and bringing up the fondest memories!
