Good tip on using the heater to keep the engine temps under control in the event of primary radiator cooling fan failure - I had a similar situation in my Focus ST (engine fan was intermittent, as the fan motor was failing). I kept the car running fine when stuck in traffic even on the hottest days here in Florida, by whacking the heater to full hot and the inside fan to max speed. As soon as there was any forward motion, the interior fan and temp setting could be reduced again. I ran the car like this for several weeks before finally replacing the cooling fan!
If you shorted the cable then that might well have turned the fans on. My gauge temp sensor went faulty that way by shorting and giving a high temp reading on the display.
