Just had Port Askaig (I believe 16) this past Thursday. It was my first taste of peat! Must say it’s pretty good! Excited to come back and watch this review... but all I got was the peat!
Celebrating a birthday. Watching the tubes and comparing my whiskeys to your tasting notes. Ran out of bottles after a few (15) so started blending. Cubans, sun, Whiskey, birthday and fireworks. Was planing on a deer too but the rifle had to go away!
I've made "whiskey" in barrel from vodka and little bottles of stuff before. It was an interesting experiment (and a great gift from my dad). But now I have the itch for a new barrel and some real whiskey mixing and experimentation. I'm thinking now about buying various bottles of whiskey made in Oregon, and blending them together for some sort of Oregon Blend.
Actually had an oaked vodka, my wife is from Poland and when we were over there she introduced me to vodka which I didn't really have a taste for at the time. Debowa was one of them, it's a slightly oaked vodka with a thin strip of oak left in the bottle. Good stuff!
I have a request. Can we get a video that lists the X whiskies that should be tasted in order to experience a whisky of each type. I'm not necessarily looking for the "best" whiskies, I'm moreso looking for ones that are quintessential of their category. Keep up the good work fellas.
Nice work gentlemen. Port Askaig 15, and Port Askaig 15 year 100 proof is found in Alberta, Canada, and a great price. The 100 proof is incredible for the price - around $95 CAD.
Been looking all over and can’t really find any information about Scott’s Selection. Here's a thought I had. If I was to buy a small 10 liter whisky barrel and put a whiskey in that or a moonshine-esque beverage, would it be possible to make a whiskey better or turn the moonshine to whiskey?
Back when i lived in Pennsylvania, i was visiting a buddy down in Hagerstown, Maryland and came across a store that had a special selection of an Ohio Bourbon called Tom's Foolery Bonded Bourbon. Now, i dont have the (empty) bottle with me to remember the batch and bottle, but that bourbon still blows my mind. It was different with every sip. any chance you guys might be able to get your hands on some?
Since you mention that the vodka must be a grain vodka to potentially make whisky after aging (and i know this sounds awful but hear me out), would putting Everclear (regular or watered down to cask strength) in to a barrel and aging it result in the product being classified as whisky? Would putting it in at the full 190 proof break down too many of the lignin/cellulose?
Awesome show! 2 quick questions! What region is Jura from? Trying to create a collection from the different regions, so far all I need is a lowland. Any recommendations?
Whiskey Question: I run a monthly poker game at my house, which I've started a whiskey club during. Players take turns each month bringing a bottle for the group, we then proceed to pretend we know what we're talking about while drinking them. This month a friend brought a bottle of Woodford Reserve Bourbon. I liked it just fine. But, he also brought candied bacon as a "Garnish". Which I'd never seen before. But, you know...bacon...bourbon. So I sank the bacon in my glass and proceeded to enjoy the bourbon. When I was done, I ate that piece of bacon that had been soaking in the bourbon...and well...my toes curled. Holy hell that was good! Is this a common thing? Or did telling everyone this just make me a philistine?
I have a challenge in addition to the scale of the mooch levels. My challenge is to create the laws of the mooch. We must create a way to validate what a mooch is. Also what he/she must adhere to.
This is a question for Rex. I've been watching back episodes and there is talk of patron saints of whiskey, but what would the patron saint of whiskey mooching be? Would it be someone who is an incredible mooch or would it be someone for whom other mooches could get an incredible amount/quality of whiskey for free?
Yall should try to make different batches of rectifiers on the next Whiskey Biscuits! Sounds like a good way to kill the time before the distillery opens up!
"Who's Aig? What am I asking?" "I was touched..." "Where did she touch you?" Rex. Oh, Rex. Rex, Rex, Rex, Rex, Rex. Rex. These, I'm afraid, are not just one, but TWO certified, 100% USDA Choice Dad Jokes. You now owe us all a drink.
hi guys, love all of your videos..Pewdiepie just made another video about Irish whiskey in which he introduced a 100 years old Irish whiskey named Kilvannon, would it be possible for you to review the same kind of whiskey, thanks a lot in advance and i wish you all the success in your new distillery.
Outstanding video gentlemen. I've been watching as much as possible during the day to catch up. Very interested in discovering Scotch and everything it offers. I do have a question. Why when I nose and try to taste regular Jim Beam do I get nothing but fire? I can nose and taste a bottle of Gin that I have and do quite well with it. Should I switch to Scotch or Irish Whiskey?
I have had Jameson a couple times and was easy to drink will explore that more. Today I picked up Grants Family Reserve for less than $20. Tried it neat and I'm getting some burn but it's nothing major. Picking up some flavors but can't quite pinpoint them yet. A few drops of water tones it down and getting some wood, possible smoke. Did find chocolate after a while afterward. Any advice on that one.
If you still plan on doing a glassware episode, could you include the Norlan Glass? It is new, but I have heard nothing but praise concerning the Glass. And if you haven't heard about it, it might be worth looking in to.
Talking about putting vodka into a barrel got me thinking about barrel aged gin for whatever reason which was then entertaining to me that while typing my first version of this you talked about your barrel aged gin. To the point. Do you know of any whiskey finished in a barrel that used to house gin?
Greetings, Daniel and Rex. Long time viewer, first time commenter. Smoky whiskies are hard to come by here in Armenia, so I asked my parents who were on a trip to Europe to bring me a bottle of Laphroaig 10. They couldn't find it and bought the Laphroaig QA instead, which is finished in new American white oak. It's good but strangely smooth compared to what I remember Laphroaig was like. Did I get a Laphroaig 'lite' or does my memory fail me?
Whiskey Vault First of all, thanks for the response)) However, this isn't the quarter cask, seems like a travel retail special, ever come across it? www.masterofmalt.com/whiskies/laphroaig/laphroaig-qa-cask-1l-whisky/
Rex and Dick, I love your videos, I would like to hear your thoughts on Winchester Single Barrel Select Bourbon. It's been a favorite of my Pipe and Whiskey club.
I've gotten a bottle of monkey shoulder, bulleit rye, macallan 12, and glenfiddich 12 and I didn't spend a single penny! My dad just needed someone who would drink whisky with him (he didn't know I liked whisky) so I said I would, but I don't want to spend any money because "I don't think I'll enjoy it as much as you"
The Port Askaig range is taken from 3 different distilleries. They are all single malts but each expression is from a different distillery. My guesses would be Caol Ila, Bunnahabhain and Bowmore
Have you considered writing your tasting notes separately because some times you feed off each other. "I taste burnt donuts", "me to and a hint of latex paint". Me too, and I taste "under cooked corn dogs and bubblegum" Me too..... Every possible taste you can articulate is thrown into each review. I love free whisky, it tastes delicious, like Elmer's glue or Lego blocks .
Wondering my level of mooch here. Getting married in a few months and had a few different groups of people who wanted throw us a shower. Instead of having multiple people buy us the same towels and plates I brought up the idea of having a stock the bar party. For most of the drinks we have asked people to bring us their favorite whiskey or wine as my future wife loves wine, but I have had a few people ask what types of whiskey I would like and price is not an option. I’m curious as to how far I need to mooch that comment from them. Garrison brothers is my favorite whiskey and at $75 I feel like that’s a decent price but I sure would like a bottle of Johnny walker blue for special occasions and this may be my chance at that. Thanks guys and looking forward to the possibly of some merch coming from the new channel.
Joined this week while watching vino channels. You guys are so much fun!. I had a question though: I love the blackest coffee's and spiciest foods, but I prefer a sweeter whiskey like mccallen to harsher ones like laphroaig. any ideas on what what whiskey has the same strong flavors but without the nose full of ethanol that has made getting in to whiskey a challenge for me. Thank you and cheers to you!
Mooch level 179, personally volunteer to "help" your friend move who just happens to have an impressive collection of whisky only to personally over see the careful packing an unpacking of said whiskey collection, and when your friend asks you why it seems that his collection has gotten smaller you simply reply "evaporation."
Hello from vermont. You guys are the drinking buddies I wish I had. I love to enjoy whiskey with you guys after work. One minute in and all the B.S. disappears. Keep up the good work. Also team rex for the biscuit win. But Daniel I love the dad jokes.
I recently heard somewhere that one way to tell if a whiskey has been chill filtered is to look at the proof. If it's at 46% ABV or higher, then supposedly its not chill filtered. Is there any truth to this and do you know why chill filtered whiskies can't be above 45%?
Mostly, whiskies are chill-filtered to avoid the "scotch mist" that appears when water or ice is added (or the whisky just gets too cool). This doesn't happen at 46% or more no matter if the whisky is chill-filtered or not. So any whisky can be chill-filtered but above 46% the visual evidence isn't available. whiskyscience.blogspot.ca/2014/11/chill-filtration.html
Instead of cutting whiskey with water to lower the proof could you instead cut whisky with vodka to mellow out dramatic and overpowering flavours without lowing the proof?
Firstly, biscuits Rex!!! they're biscuits. Second, i dove into and Islay the other night and instantly fell in love. I got that "OH YEAH C'MON" moment Daniel always gets when he tries something he loves. My question is, I'm looking into buying barrels and one day eventually aging my own blends. Is there anything special i need to know before i goof and end up wasting some valuable Water of Life. My other question is, Daniel, i noticed your somm necklace has had a red star on it for quite a while now. What's the difference between that necklace and the one you had before? And remember. Biscuits!!!
loved tyhis video guys! i especially love the re-ignition of the biscuit wars and to top it all off the Moochometer is an awesome idea haha! please can you give my MRs Jessi a shout out just so i can watch her fan-girl while sipping my Whisky!
I've watched a couple hundred Whiskey Vault and Whiskey Tribe videos now, pretty sure this one makes the top 3. Freaking hilarious! Also, Team Rex because biscuits and gravy are what's up.
Have you ever binge watched a show for two days straight? Well, that's what I'm doing here. I challenged myself to watch every episode in order. I am tired. I need sleep. My family is worried. But I have gone back to beginning and catching episodes I've missed and I will probably cry when I get to the end.
Hi Guys! Rex, I may have achieved a small level of non-mooch, or perhaps even antimooch (but cool, like an antihero in the movies) I recently gifted to a friend, a bottle of Laphroaig 10 year for his 40th birthday, and when he opened it, I missed out on the event, and the pour of the Laphroaig. I beg, from the mooch-spirits and from the Kwizatz Haderach of all mooches, Rex. forgiveness. Daniel, I have a question about Drambuie. Every Christmas, it is tradition at he house of my kids' Grandpa, to share a glass of Drambuie and a fine cigar. The combination of which made the Drambuie almost a pure, liquid sweet to my uneducated palate. Aside from "secret formulas" that the distillers, and bottlers have for Drambuie itself. I would like to know, from you, what branch of whiskey product does Drambuie fall? Thanks guys. Together you have rekindled my too-long neglected enjoyment of whisky.
I went to a friend's birthday party last night and was surprised and pleased to find a bottle each of Bullet Rye and Chivas Regal available at the beverage table. Both bottles were low, so I was preparing to fill a few glasses and sneak off to a corner to find tasting notes when I took a sip of Chivas that tasted like water with carmel color. The Bullet Rye tasted similar except more like someone had been handling a hot pepper and stirred my glass with their pinky finger. Both bottles had been low enough for long enough that they tasted like nothing and had little bite left, and the most exciting beverages to be had were moonshine with Dr Pepper, and peppermint smirnoff. Great party. Terrible whiskey.
What is wrong with my taste-buds?! I see near 100% positive reviews on the 110 proof, yet as a lover of Islay malts, this bottling is one I just cannot appreciate! It comes over as young, a bit harsh and too sweet and "chocolatey" for me. I also believe too little has been removed from the start and end of the distilling process as I get that "seedy feeling" of drinking low quality alcohol the next morning, that I never get with other single malts!
Daniel I would like an official opinion from the somm. I love whiskey, I've had Angels envy, monkey shoulder, Glenfiddich 12 and others and loved them all. I'm 21 so I've just gotten started and I wanted my dad to like whiskey too. He dislikes whiskey so much he doesn't even like Jameson, the standard for non-whiskey drinkers. He says I'm a snob because I feel that drinking every whiskey on the rocks is a waste of whiskey, even Glenfiddich (which is over $50). I feel it diminishes the flavor too much and you should have a cocktail or something else. I don't judge him for it and have accepted that whiskey isn't for him, am I a snob?
You can consciously recognize that personal preference is king while simultaneously mourning the consumption of a whisky in a way you wouldn't prefer. It's only human.
Most of the releases by this brand have been at 45.8% which in addition to being oddly specific is also a staple of the Talisker line. I think that's more than a little suspicious.
So here's a long comment, as I mentioned before and people seem to have caught up to it, to capture Daniel's attention. First, a serious question for Daniel, and I have seen you avoid this so don't BS me: How can a normie like me become a whisky somm? Second, I have 2 deep thoughts. This is for Daniel: "Can someone die in the living room?". This is for Rex: "A Moocher is only as good as the last whisky he mooched". You guys are great and I hope this gets to Daniel's spreadsheet. - Kevin (it's easier for Rex)
Ha! The somm thing... Just pay to attend our class. whiskymarketing.org On your own, I would try to get industry experience by getting a gig in a reputable whisky/cocktail bar.
Gentlemen I have a solution to biscuitgate. Whenever you are reviewing a scotch or other whiskey from the British isles, biscuits will mean shortbread etc. And whenever you are reviewing a bourbon you can take it as those weird scone looking things that Rex keeps going on about.
if you're IN the UK, or are FROM the UK, only then is it acceptable to call cookies "biscuits." Y'all are in TEXAS, therefore they must be called cookies. Daniel, pray tell what blasphemous word you use to call American biscuits? If you can't come up with a suitable alternative, you can't get away with calling both "biscuits." #TeamCookie
Im definetly on the mooch side of the biscuit debate... #REXWEEK Also "Get the fuck off me cookie" --Cookie Monster or was that REX Master Level Whiskey Mooch???
The great thing about apple juice is that you can drink it any time you want.
The great thing about whisky is that it looks like apple juice...
😄👍
I just have a water bottle filled with vodka. I'm boring :v
As long as it gets you drunk...
Holy Shit thats funny!
I'm so glad that you guys liked it! I had a feeling it would be right up your alley. :)
a delightful dram, thank you sir!
Thank you for that amazing Whisky my friend. Wish i can have a sip of that before i die lol
Thank you Steffen Larsen, raise a dram to you Sir
i actually like the 8 year old better.. funny enough
@@arzeboy I the 10.
I have a great mooch story for y'all. I was studying abroad in Bologna, Italy and found myself in a rather questionable club one eveneing. The music was awful and the crowd even worse. In this mayhem was one bright spot. I quickly discovered the the bar tenders had no idea what they had behind thier bar. They simply had a fixed well price and a top shelf price for all drinks. Lucky for me they had an unopened bottle of Lagavulin behind the counter. I ordered a glass! Not only was the drink only 8 Euro, they didn't understand how to serve whiskey, so I kid you not, they served me a rocks glass full, to the brim, of Lagavulin 16. Needless to say, I drank about 3/4 a bottle of Lagavulin that evening, making the club and music much more bearable. #RexWeek
I saw a 1980 Glenrothes Scott’s selection at my local liquor store and for something that old it’s extremely cheap $155 USD but can’t really get any answers about them and what quality they produce and if this is a good deal.
Here's a thought I had. If I was to buy a small 10 liter whisky barrel and put a whiskey in that or a moonshine-esque beverage, would it be possible to make a whiskey better or turn the moonshine to whiskey?
yes!
This is available in the US now as of recent. Just saw it at Total Wine yesterday for about $75. Cheers!
It's called sortilege, probably one of the best combinations of maple syrup and whisky , would love to see you two try a brand so close to home for me
Since you mention that the vodka must be a grain vodka to potentially make whisky after aging (and i know this sounds awful but hear me out), would putting Everclear (regular or watered down to cask strength) in to a barrel and aging it result in the product being classified as whisky? Would putting it in at the full 190 proof break down too many of the lignin/cellulose?
It's usually too far distilled to really work for the flavors you'd hope for. But might as well try!
Awesome show! 2 quick questions! What region is Jura from? Trying to create a collection from the different regions, so far all I need is a lowland. Any recommendations?
Jura is the Isle of Jura! Island of the west coast.
Also for lowland get any Auchentoshan
Best whisky show at the moment.
Thanks!

Jason Cochran i have that bourbon (the double oaked) at home. I'll try this tonight. Thank you for sharing that idea.
Barcelonista I'm more a scotch guy, but Woodford double oak is freaking amazing. One of the better spirits I've had.
Yancey Foster me too man. I have 6-7 scotchs and 1 rye and 1 bourbon at all times just in case I get visit and they prefer that
I keep a few bourbons 20+ scotches a couple japanese and irish whiskeys and a rye
Holcombi wish I could afford that

I had a glass of Ardbeg Uigeadail over the weekend. I may have found my new favorite scotch!!!
Adam Cicigoi i gifted an Ardbeg Corryvreckan to a close friend. We opened it right away and it blew out minds. Beautiful dram.

Daniel your wife is good people! She can appreciate a biscuit and knows a biscuit is a biscuit and a cookie is a cookie.
Actually they have no problem telling you what distillery it is. Generally, peaty stuff is Caol Ila, unpeated is Bunnahabhain.
thanks! For some reason, I couldn't track that down. Google failed me
Guysss please make a review of the Chivas Regal Ultis! İ am sure you'll like it. İts a very interesting whisky

Your tasting notes of this was exactly 100% same as my first impression of Ardbeg 10. In other words Im geting this sooner than later :P
loved tyhis video guys! i especially love the re-ignition of the biscuit wars and to top it all off the Moochometer is an awesome idea haha! please can you give my MRs Jessi a shout out just so i can watch her fan-girl while sipping my Whisky!
macallan 12 fine oak = black forest gateau
pls confirm for me pretty please
I've watched a couple hundred Whiskey Vault and Whiskey Tribe videos now, pretty sure this one makes the top 3. Freaking hilarious! Also, Team Rex because biscuits and gravy are what's up.
Over 3 years later there is finally a Tribe episode about whiskey rectifiers as Daniel describes lol
Love the Port Askaig whiskies, great work guys keep them coming
You guys should definitely try and make one of the “fake” whisky’s.
Pleeeeeeeeeease Longrow 18 review!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Found the sparkle!!! On his beard when he says sparkly.
Second is the best
Have you ever binge watched a show for two days straight? Well, that's what I'm doing here. I challenged myself to watch every episode in order. I am tired. I need sleep. My family is worried. But I have gone back to beginning and catching episodes I've missed and I will probably cry when I get to the end.
We'll be here waiting when you arrive
Drambuie is a flavored whisky. Basically a fancier version of what Fireball is doing. not bad, but not in the same category.
Every Texan will should agree on what a fucking biscuit is 😂😂😂 go to Whataburger and get a honey butter chicken biscuit 😂😂
Shortbread is a type of biscuit, and is also about twice as addictive as crack cocaine.
Zoanthrope and 4 times as dangerous
That it is, 3 boxes later where did they go, lol.
We ferried into port askiag in August you have the pronunciation correct. Now go back and fix Old Pulteney. :)
hahahahahaha. I still feel bad about that one.
I like the 10 more (because it's CS)
Funny! Great video.
Whiskey Vault, understood, I don't shame him for it, I just really wanted him to share the love of whiskey with me.
0:58 till 1:18 did he just bust in his pants? hahahah
Daniel, Rex week IS a foregone conclusion
Most of the releases by this brand have been at 45.8% which in addition to being oddly specific is also a staple of the Talisker line. I think that's more than a little suspicious.
Good luck surviving Halloween in that haunted castle... oooooooOOOOO spooooooOOOOOookyyyy
Team biscuit!
To the biscuits vault ! ! !
I swear the joke Rex made was a dad joke. "askaig? who's aig and what am i asking?" haha
Yes. I let him off the hook on that one.
at 8:47 daniel said that it has tea, chocolate, women?????
lemon....but thats funny.
Think it was supposed to be "lemon pepper" but it definitely sounded like he said "women."
Yeah I caught that too, took me a moment to figure it out. During that moment I had some interesting thoughts to say the least...
Mooch level 1: steal biscuit/cookie. This shows childhood innocence that lowers the guard of others allowing you to take full advantage.
But was it a long comment?
I don't want to be that guy, but I'm assuming you're making pewdiebait video number 3? Great sub mooching possibilities
Where's Short Comment Love
right here. 😍👍😍👍😍👍
I noticed the star on the medallion in the recent videos. Did someone get a promotion? Or did Stalin reward Dan from beyond the grave?
It's the mark of 3rd level sommelier :-)
Most vodkas are made from grain. It's an uncommon vodka, at least in the US, that's made from potatoes.
Just pay to attend our class. whiskymarketing.org
On your own, I would try to get industry experience by getting a gig in a reputable whisky/cocktail bar.
Whiskey Vault i live in Florida. Do you guys do online classes?
"Level 32 whiskey mooch" is going on my resume
We need TeamMooch and TeamSomm shirts and hats.
im making the team Somm shirts twice as expensive, and anyone that orders a Somm shirt will actually get a Mooch shirt.
Im in!!! Gimme gimme
Lol awesome
I just want a shirt with daniels face that says "ooooooh!"
It needs to have the beard sparkle too.

Hey Daniel. I'd be worried if my wife were on Rex's team.
the best shortbread is from scotland.
Mooching MOAS? Challenge accepted! ;-)
I apologize for letting the tribe down. Instead of four Macallan Ms, I bought a truck today. Mea culpa, mea maxima culpa.
Why do chicken coops only have two doors? Because if they had four, they would be chicken sedans #RexWeek
"Were just going to drink one whisky today because I really want to sit with it" a couple min later "I am going to grab another port askaig"
Im definetly on the mooch side of the biscuit debate... #REXWEEK
Also "Get the fuck off me cookie"
--Cookie Monster or was that REX Master Level Whiskey Mooch???
The one where Rex tells a dad joke (0:29)
