  • Today we taste and review Ardbeg An Oa single malt scotch whisky.
Check out the Instagram account @whiskey_marketing_school
** Can I donate a whisk(e)y for you to review in The Whisk(e)y Vault?
Of course! If you’re interested in making a tax deductible donation towards our whiskey selection, head on over to:
    austinwhiskyvault.com/whisky-d...
    ** What's with the necklaces?
Rex is a whiskey mooch. His necklace is a manifestation of pure glory - forged from the irradiated bones of eagles and wolves. Also a tube sock.
See the origin story here: goo.gl/JMc2Hr
Daniel is a whiskey sommelier. His necklace is a token of his sommelier level, and he trains whiskey sommeliers at The Whisk(e)y Marketing School in Austin Texas.
    **A Whisk(e)y school?
Yup. Here are a few things we believe.
** You don’t have to be a snob to appreciate and love great whiskey.
Whisky and Whiskey (it depends on where it’s from) have been an important part of cultures around the world from time immemorial. Whiskey is a part of the very fabric of Western society, and in most places, is as common and accessible as beer.
Like Jazz and wine, snobs have predictably hijacked whiskey appreciation, spoiling our natural, common connection with it and creating a false dichotomy of “good whiskey” and “bad whiskey.”
It’s time to break through the emotional bias with facts and science. That’s what this school is about.
** The only valid definition of “good” whiskey is “whiskey you like to drink.”
Learning how to share your love of whiskey in a way that connects people to the history and the story has more to do with public speaking and storytelling than it does with facts and tests.
The best way to learn about whiskey and share that love is to drink whiskey and talk about it with friends. Study the history, find the stories, and discover the culture and the methods that have been developed over hundreds of years. That’s what you’ll do when you attend The Whisk(e)y Marketing School.
** You don’t need a marketing degree to learn how to share your love of whiskey with the world.
There's an old saying, "In business, it's not what you know... It's who you know."
Regardless the industry you're in, most people are clumsy and ineffective when it comes to "networking" because they ignore a very important rule - Relationship First, Business Second.
There's a tremendous amount of curiosity about Whisk(e)y today. It's a great excuse for you to gather a group of people who want to have fun and learn something new. The Whisk(e)y School teaches you how to tap into that curiosity, and share your love of whisk(e)y in an unpretentious way. You're demonstrating knowledge, expertise, and an engaging personality - things valued by every gatekeeper, in every industry.
Or would you rather hand out business cards and cross your fingers?

I love watching the videos! My whisk(e)y collection has grown dramatically since becoming a member of the crew. My nightly ritual is to enjoy a nice glass of whisk(e)y and watch your videos. My girlfriend has never watched one of your videos, but knows your voices, she pretends to ignore them while we are getting ready for bed, but I know this to be just a farce. I came home the other day to find a bottle of Highland Park 12 on the kitchen table, she said “those guys talk about it and you didn’t have it, so.....you’re welcome.” I look forward to watching more, keep on being awesome.

You should rename your channel "whiskey void" cause no matter what I have on my plate for the day, if I sit down to watch one of your videos I inevitably get sucked into a 2- 3 hour binge and get nothing done. And I'm grateful.

Just bought this for the first time. OMG!!! This is truly magnificent.
I had to go back and watch this video, because I remember you had reviewed it. My jaw dropped, however, when you mentioned the price. This bottle cost me almost $110 in Ontario Canada. Stupid luxury tax! Cheers fellas! Keep it up!

I'm having this right now for the first time, and i LOVE it. I'm a bourbon man, always have been. about a month ago, I decided to pick up a bottle of Laphroaig Quarter Cask on a whim. I fell in love with peated scotch. This is better than Quarter Cask IMO.

So I moved from Highland into Islay with an unpeated Bruichladdich and loved it (tried Scottish Barley and The Classic Laddie), so I moved to An Oa and I’m hooked. I love smoky, peated Islays. And you guys make me laugh every time. Thanks!

Guys! I love the show! Daniel and Rex you guys have motivated me to start my own collection and expand my pallet. I agree with Daniel and say that single malts and scotch are my absolute favorite. It's my luxury item I buy because I don't make entirely too much cash and my girlfriend doesn't get too happy with every bottle I buy. I stumbled upon the glenfiddich 14 in burbon barrel on sale at my local store. I was surprised to see a 14 for 40 bucks and it's magnificent. I am a dalmore fan and this reminds me of a dalmore 12 and macallan 12 blend. I'd love to see a review on it and see what you think if you hadn't already. And bring back Rex week. Keep up the awesome shows!

I finally bought me an Islay! I had been putting it off, partly for money (I’m in college), and partly because I’ve been trying lots of other things. I’m new to whisk(e)y in general, so everything is new and some stuff has to wait. Anyway, it was McClelland’s, which I was unfamiliar with but was super cheap and had the word “Islay” on it. It’s been fun trying new stuff because of you guys. If you told me this summer I’d be trying different bourbons and scotches by thanksgiving I wouldn’t have believed you. But I’m really enjoying it so far! If only my wallet would get on board...
But from the McClelland’s I got smoked ham on the nose but not on the taste. Smoke, yes, but not smoked ham. I suck at notes, so idk how do describe it in very much detail. But on the nose it’s all ham. Honestly I didn’t love it, but I’m guessing the price tag has i bit to do with it, and mostly it’s just because of unfamiliarity. I also finally got some monkey shoulder, and it didn’t strike me as very memorable. Certainly good, sweet, mild... honestly I don’t remember much because I didn’t spend much time on it because I wanted to try the Islay, but I knew if I was trying both I shouldn’t have the Islay first.
Just thought I’d share my experience. Anyway, once again I love the channel and I hope you guys do well moving forward!

Caramel/butterscotch for sure, then pepper, and some kind of spice like oregano. I loved the maple sausage comment, that's a great call. Cohesive is a great way to explain the tastes, none overshadowing, and with great progression throughout. Great dram and great tasting dudes! EDIT: I just said "great" about 5 times, thanks An OA.

Had this the other night, my first experience with an islay scotch. I jumped into the deep end but enjoyed it, guess the different woods helped. And adding some water really made it way more approachable to a beginner to scotch (I'm more of a bourbon fan). Highly recommend this scotch in general.

Since you two are proficient with whiskey, I have a challenge for you two, should you choose to accept: using the knowledge of whiskeys & the selection of the Vault, you have until December 24th to produce a video about one of the two best December drink, either ... Hot Tottie ... or ... Eggnog. Failure to comply means you must pour a whole bottle of each Bourbon, Irish Whiskey, And Scotch Whisky onto the foundation of your distillery as tribute to the Almighty Whiskey EAGAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAL!

This might seem like a silly comment but my "aha" moment with Islay Scotch was having a Lagavulin 16 chocolate from a Christmas chocolate selection. I had disliked Scotch for 46 years up until that point and something just dropped. It was like a chocolate bridge to the dark side whence I have not looked back. Whiskey chocolates are the best marketing tactic for Scotch.

Two weeks or so ago I discovered McAfee’s Benchmark bourbon at one of my local liquor stores. I was looking for Old Crow, but they didn’t have it, and I saw this bottle for $9!! Curious, I took a closer look and found that it is currently being produced at Buffalo Trace Distillery, and figured that $9 was well worth the gamble. I...hit...the jackpot! It’s so smooth and friendly without being boring, great flavor (obviously not very complex, but good enough to put in a mixed drink or even sip on when you just want a damn drink), and of course very inexpensive. My original go to budget bourbon was Wild Turkey 101 (roughly $20 where I am), but this Benchmark is definitely going to be in regular rotation with it from now on. I know you guys really like Buffalo Trace products, so if you’ve never tried it, I highly recommend picking up a bottle.

This thanksgiving I pulled out all the moochy stops. We went to my aunt and uncle's house, as we do every year, but this year I'm 21 and it's not weird for me to drink. He had a solid whiskey collection and I tried his Glenfiddich, Glenlivet, and finally his Macallan 18, and my lord. It is incredible, absolutely mind-blowing, and it's no surprise it's 200 dollars a bottle. I don't see a review from you guys, so Rex, your almighty master-moochiness, can you get Daniel to pull down a bottle and give it a test run?

Costco has an Alexander Murray Highland called Bon Accord for 19.99. They have Glenlivit Founders Reserve in a gift package with bitters and a mixing spoon for 29.99. The Bon Accord is 40 % so no water should be used and is a good entry level budget scotch. We use it as a base scotch in our whisky club.

Was enjoying a glass of Bruichladdich tonight and had a thought. Can you guys in your distillery make a peated bourbon? Obviously at least 51 percent corn and aged in new oak barrels, but some, if not all, of the remaining mash bill be peated barley from Scotland? Like 62 percent corn, 30 percent peated barley, 8 percent rye? You could (and should) call it Peat's Bourbon. I would have posted this comment on your whiskey biscuits channel, but you guys don't review comments there. Maybe something to start doing? Love you guys, both your channels, all the information I have learned, and the whisk(e)y you have convinced me to buy.

Rex/Dan, this expression is pronounced “An Oh’’. I was in Scotland a week ago and asked a local Oban shop owner and he was talking about how they all joke about this new release. ‘’Hey, have you heard Ardbeg have released a new whisky?...’’Yeah, An Oa’’...read that in a Scottish voice and you hear the same thing as ‘’I know’’. It’s a nice joke for them. :)

Its not long since I started drinking whisky and specially scotch single malts. Over a couple of months I bought some whiskeys at random and now I have amongst others, (like Oban 14, Talisker 10, the Arran 14 and Springbank 18, which is all AMAZING) Highland Park 12, Glenfarclas 21 and Glenfiddich Reserve Cask. And I feel like the Highland Park, the Glenfarclas and my Glenfiddich is SO similar in both nose and taste, even though they are all so different based on location, age and casks. Could you (or someone) please explain me why this is???
And thank you for this amazing series! :D

i wrote this in a friends face (facebook messenger) when he was getting irritated with my snobbiness. what do you think?
(some background info, we were talking about ramen and i asked him what kind of ramen a particular shop was. he was like, like hell i care, as long as its good. so i started ranting about the importance of using the correct terminology to describe food and a few pitfalls doing so might bring)
categorizing and describing food isn't about creating an objective ranking system. We all have to admit that we live in a subjective reality where peoples’ opinions will inherently vary greatly. some people might prefer lighter flavors while others prefer richer ones. the descriptors used to help categorize different types of food assists in choosing what to eat next or in the future. knowing how to describe what you like means that you are more likely to order something you find delicious when you go to a restaurant you arent familiar with. the same goes for most forms of entertainment that involves the senses, such as audio gear. some people prefer sound signatures with more low end reverberation and punch, while others prefer sound signatures with more treble, a brighter, often airier and analytical sound. this is why it is so difficult to determine whether wine is good or not when you rely on reviews by a connoisseurs, different connoisseurs have different preferences and while one expert might like a dark, rich, fruity wine, another who prefers lighter flavors might hate it.
while learning the lingo of cuisine is a necessity, it is important to avoid simplifying our knowledge, associating our vocabulary with “good” or “bad”. in the modern era of food journalism, a lot of writers rely on the use of buzzwords to describe foods. this is not inherently bad, many buzzwords can be good descriptors such as “dry-age”, but it would be wrong to think that if a steak isn’t “dry-aged” it will be a bad steak, and vice-versa. while some journalists fall into this trap, notable exceptions have risen to the top of the industry because of their honesty. these include such well-regarded individuals like anthony bourdain, action bronson, and eddie huang. these chefs/hosts are honest about their likes and dislikes, they dont "like" something just because its filled with fancy words and won’t “dislike” something just because its “kidney”, “liver”, or “spleen”.
there is also the problem of food snobbery in which individuals disdain foods that arent created with "traditional" techniques. snobs consider more pedestrian food trends as nothing more than fads that pass, and while such ideas have been proven wrong, they exist for a reason. many food gimmicks will die out over time like ramen burgers or lasagna burritos, there are foods that stand the test of time and become "tradition". altho i think snobs and non-snobs can all agree that some flavor combinations don’t work like raw fish and sweet chocolate.

After having 50 some odd bourbons, and 30+ scotch whiskies, some Irish, Japanese etc.... I tried Ardbeg 10 for the first time this weekend. I finally found a peated whisky that I can drink and fully enjoy. Its the BBQ smoke and sweetness. But I don't think I could have like it as much before having so many other whiskies. Just like I hear some new people to whisky in general say that 40 ABV is to hot. But let them drink the same ABV for a while and they will eventually crave something higher in proof.

Hey guys! What would be a good, friendly, but not to expensive (living on a student budget) scotch to get my father for christmas? He is not a big drinker, so I was thinking of maybe introducing him to a good, slightly peated whisky with the highland park 12, or should I pick something even friendlier and sweeter?

Treacle looks like burnt golden-syrup, but it's less sweet and more bitter. We have it in the UK. Like a bitter dark molasses type thing. We pronounce it (tree-kill). Joe, West Lothian Scotland.

Yet again, thanks to this channel (and this video in particular) I find myself just over $50 poorer and one whisky richer. While Black Friday shopping today at Total Wine I ended up purchasing a bottle of Ardbeg An Oa along with a bottle of Ranger Creek .36 Bourbon for my brother. I had just watched your video on the An Oa, and with it fresh in my mind found myself leaving the store with more whisk(e)y than I had intended on leaving with. Up to this point the only other Ardbeg I'd had was the 10 year old, and so far I am quite pleased with the An Oa. Still, I must put some of the blame on you for not only being two of the coolest dudes on these here inter webs , but also for turning me on to such fantastic whiskeys. Keep up the good work gents, love the channel, cheers.

I've been watching your videos for a few weeks now and grown small collection of whiskeys for myself. I just purchased the ardbeg uigeadail for around 140$ after tax in BC, Canada. Could you guys do a review in this whiskey. I was originally going to buy the ardbeg 10 but they were sold out which is around 90$ a bottle plus tax. If like to know your thoughts on the flavour. I find on the smell is more smokey with a little bit of sweetness but on the taste the smoke and the sweetness are both there at the same time and find it very smooth for a whiskey with a higher alcohol content. Cheers .

I've taken a rather strange trip through the realms of Whiskey, especially after watching you guys for the last few months. I've gone along from thinking Bourbon was my drink of choice to finding I have a love for those things that most people say punch you in the face unapologetic-ally. Among my favorites are Ardbeg, Laphraoig, Auchentoshan Three Wood and most recently the absolutely wonderful Kilkerran 12.
The strange thing is I never taste the antiseptic, medicinal or biting notes that many comment on (thinking mostly at Kilkerran for many of that). I'm new at trying to articulate anything more than "Oh my god that's good" or "mmmmM!" when it comes to tasting notes. I'm curious if I'm my taste buds are just dead from all the spicy food I imbibe or if I am as my mother always tells me, special.

Have you guys reviewed the Ardbeg Kelpie? I'm going to start searching the channel now but I don't believe you guys have. I'm frequently passing this bottle in the store and I feel like it's calling my name. The label suggest briny peaty goodness but at around $100 a bottle I'm hesitant to pull the trigger. Would love to see what you guys think! Thanks for your videos, I love to sit down and have a dram with some internet company!

Yes!!! Thank you Daniel for finally acknowledging Tullamore Dew for the great cheap whiskey it is. Let it be known however I have not forgotten you wasting gratuitous amounts of it at the hands of Rex and a leaf blower. So, a head to head against the over used Jameson? I mean Tully is in fact a better whiskey but can't seem to shine through the massive shadow cast by Jamo

For budget Scotch, I agree on the Monkey Shoulder.
As for Bourbon, it depends on what I'm using it for. For mixing, I'm fine with Evan Williams since it's stupidly cheap and doesn't suck. For drinking by itself, Knob Creek isn't half bad.

I'm a deserty bourbon type of guy. Specifically Old Grand Dad 114 being my favorite.
Ardbeg an OA was my first step into scotch beyond the glenlivet as a minor.
I didn't finish the first glass, but was impressed by the bacon smokiness. I've since gone through a few bottles of this ardbeg. While I have an Ardbeg 10, it tastes a little too much burnt bandaid for my taste. I prefer the meaty smoke.
